Kernel Panic due to com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily(1.7.1) ?

my iMac crashed quite often recently.
Everytime is crash the log shows ''com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily(1.7.1)'' in backtrace
(not sure what does that mean... I have no idea about that)
Can anyone help me find out the problem, please?

HID has to do with Human Interface Devices such as mice, trackpads, etc. My suggestion: Boot into Safe Mode and see if the panics stop.

  • KERNAL PANIC com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily

    Hi Apple support/Forum users,
my mac has been crashing for the past 2 weeks, my mac screen is completely frozen, i have to do a manual shutdown (keep finger on button until it turns off). then i proceed to boot in, following kernal panic reports are displayed. I have been doing research of my own and have deciphered that USB hardware is causing this problem because "com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily" is common to both reports below, however i am unable to figure out what USB device may be causing this, can you please identify which USB device is causing this problem and what I can do to prevent the problem from reoccuring as i would like to continue using the culprit usb device.
Is there some sort of log file that is generated in connection with the culprit usb device for troubleshooting? Thank you.

    Kind Regards,
    OnzoSupport

Micheal, welcome, go to Applications/Utilities and open Disk Utility select your startup volume in the left hand column, then First Aid from the upper tabs and try Repairing Permissions first.
If that does not resolve the issue then boot up from your install DVD( C key held down). After the installer loads select the English arrow and then Disk Utility from the Utilities in the Main Menu. After Disk Utility loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If any error message are present (In red) run the repair again until no error messages are present. Restart the computer and see if this resolves the issue.
If not then an Archve and Install seems to be the recommended cure all here for the many issues off this update (OS 10.4.10). You are not alone, just checkout the Tiger Installation section.

  • Kernel panic after Lion com.apple.NVDAResman

I never had any problems before my install of Lion, but now - from time to time - I am getting a kernel panic.
The backtrace is Kernel Extensions in Backtrace:  com.apple.NVDAResman
Everything else is exactly the same as it was.
Anyone have an ideas what might be wrong and how I can fix this?
I am not using airport, I am hardwired to a lan.

  • Kernel panics: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBAttachedSCSI

I've been experiencing a number of kernel panics lately, about once per day (it always seems to happen while I'm at work). The problem report seems to indicate that the com.apple.iokit.IOUSBAttachedSCSI kernel extension is the culprit, leading me to believe that my backup disk is the issue here. All four USB ports on the rear of my iMac are exhausted with the following peripherals.
    - LaCie 2big 4TB external drive, connected via USB 3, configured with RAID 1 and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system, passes the disk utility check
    - Audioengine D1 external DAC
    - Apple Superdrive
    - The last USB port is connected to an APC UPS
I did a bit of googling on this problem and found several people recommending booting in safe mode, removing certain peripherals, uninstalling software for peripherals, etc. Safe mode is not really feasible since this only seems to happen once per day. All of these peripherals are essential to my workflow and none have required the installation of third-party software. I quite frankly find it inexcusable that a USB peripheral would be causing daily kernel panics. Has anyone else experienced these problems and have a potential fix? I should also note that all of these peripherals had been working with my iMac for many months without issue before these kernel panics started. Here's the the system configuration information that is generated in the report sent to Apple:

I suggest you start by removing the LaCie software, which is not needed to use the drive. You have no other software capable of causing panics. Test.
If there's no improvement, remove the two aftermarket memory modules that you installed and test again.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Are my kernel panics due to the Java Updater (com.oracle.java.Java-Updater) ?

In the past few months I've been getting more kernel panics than usual. This is on my late 2012 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 Mac Mini, running OS X Yosemite (OS X 10.2.2) with 16 GB of RAM.
Looking at the console logs following the last panic, I can see that immediately before the crash, com.oracle.java.Java-Updater had been spamming my log. Here's a sample:

I'm out of ideas — both regarding whether Java is actually responsible, and if so what to do. I need Java for a few programs I run, so deleting it isn't an option, unfortunately.

  • Kernel Panic due to audio device

Recently my iMac (24-inch, Early 2008) started crashing on a daily basis. (I would get a grey screen with a message that the computer has to be restarted). Upon restart the computer would display a crash report. All the reports had these stack trace in it:
    Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
             com.apple.iokit.IOAudioFamily(1.8.6f18)[8D690452-BF17-3DA0-BCAD-F1BCF1495926]@0 xffffff7f80e96000->0xffffff7f80ec2fff
                dependency: com.apple.kext.OSvKernDSPLib(1.3)[3D9EA2A9-E433-3F0A-AEFC-24E4B964505E]@0xfffff f7f80e90000
I tried running diagnostic tools that came with the iMac, I tried reinstalling the OS - nothing helped, computer keep crashing. Finally because of teh audio family reference in the crash report, I decided to try to disable the audio. The way to do it I found was to move directories IOAudioFamily.kext/ and IOAudio2Family.kext/ from /System/Library/Extensions/.
I did that and after I restarted my computer the audio features were gone. On a positive side, the computer has not crashed since I have disabled the audio.
Would you have any suggestion how to make the computer work properly - with audio enabled and no crashes. Is kernel panic likely to be caused by a software or a hardware problem? How to fix the issue with the audio?
    Thank you,
    Michael

Thank you for the pointer! I did get rid of the MakeMKV program and DASPI kext. Alas, after I restored the audio family kernel extensions, the computer started shutting down again with the message below:

  • Kernel Panics due to SMBFS (1.8) on 10.8 MLion

    Hi all!
i used 10.7.4 and i never seen "gray screen of death". When i dicide to use MLion 10.8 i did format hard drive and did clean install MLion 10.8.
    and prytty bugs were begun.
I isualy see random "gray screen of death" and reboot. I cant understand what to do, beacause i never see this issue on 1.6,1.7.4, 1.7.5. I dont know what to do. and why this bug is on ML 10.8
    This is my log:
    System uptime in nanoseconds: 1605570814738

You know, it's interesting you say that. It seems like you guys over here are quick to judge third-party extensions without admitting fault in one of Apple's native extensions.
In my case, I have none. I'll edit this post with my log in a moment...

  • Com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(5.5.5) Kernal Panic

I have been experiancing Kernal panic for about 1 month. Every day when I wake up from sleep.
Please if any of you have a solution that will ACTUALLY work; please please share it here.
I am so tired of macbook pro due to these Kernal Panic. Due to the same error nothing else BUT
    com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(5.5.5)
panic is caused by the error above !!!!
Please help me out. I appreciate it.
    My MAC:
    MacBook Pro, 15-inch, Mid 2012, Software  OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)

Okay, I'd been running fine for a few days -- to the point that I was feeling confident enough to start reinstalling stuff -- and then last night I got the black screen and the fan on high all over again. Hard restart resulted in the computer shutting itself down upon reaching the grey apple screen.
Booted in target mode and used diskwarrior to repair it. Here's the log, below.
If anyone can give me some insight as to why this keeps happening, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
    Jon
DiskWarrior has successfully built a new optimized directory for the disk named "iPuppethead." The new directory is
ready to replace the original directory.
    Notes:
The original directory is damaged and it was necessary to scavenge the directory to find file and folder data.
Some files that had been lost or thrown away may have been recovered.
Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicates that there will be changes to the number, the
contents and/or the attributes of the files and folders. It is recommended that you preview the replacement
directory and examine the items listed below. All files and folders were compared and a total of 14,480,521
    comparison tests were performed.
    • All errors in the directory structure such as tree depth, header node, map nodes, node size, node counts, node
links, indexes and more have been repaired.

    Explanations:
Accessible: These are items that had an entry in an inaccessible portion of the original directory. They are accessible
    in the replacement directory.
Custom Icon Flag: Every folder has a flag that indicates whether or not it has a custom icon. Repairs ensure that the
icons of these folders will be properly displayed.
Duplicate Name: Every item within a given folder must have a unique name. Repairs ensure that these items can be
    used.
Fewer Items: These folders have fewer items in the replacement directory than they had in the original directory. This
is usually the result of items being moved to the "Damaged Items" folder.
Item Count: Every folder keeps a record of the number of items that it contains. Repairs ensure that all items are
present when viewing the contents of these folders.
Name: This is text that is part of the directory information for each disk, file and folder and uniquely identifies a file
or folder within its enclosing folder.
Overlapping Contents: Overlapping files are files that occupy portions of the disk already occupied by another file.
These files will be relocated after replacing the directory. You must inspect these files to determine which of them
had been overwritten and damaged. Be aware that opening damaged files can cause the computer to crash.
Text Encoding: File and folder names are stored in Unicode characters. The text encoding value indicates the method
used to convert the file name to Unicode. Repairs prevent the name from being displayed incorrectly.
Volume Information: Every disk has information that describes its contents. Repairs prevent problems such as wasted
disk space and applications not functioning properly.
    Disk Information:

    Folders: 117,867

  • Kernel panic due to logic

Please Help: When i try to open logic pro 7, i'm getting what i'm told is a "kernel panic". It hasnt done this before but now it's doing it everytime i try to open logic. I've tried a disk utility and taking out all usb plug ins and restarting but it keeps happening. If i uninstall logic and then re install it - is there a way of keeping my channel strip settings? for example, would they be saved in project folders? Any light shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

Here is something I read from the Yahoo Logic users list. Thought it was helpful and am passing it on.

    ==================================
The error you are describing is a "kernel panic" error. This error occurs for a variety of reasons, but happens most often with volume structure errors, data corruption or permissions issues, driver issues, and/or bad RAM or logic board among other things. The fix below are some steps that I've used in the past to fix this issue (when its been non-hardware related).
NOTE: Be sure to have a backup of all your data before trying any steps below! If you get a kernel panic while your computer is booting and you don't have a backup yet, boot your computer in Target Disk mode (restart your computer and hold the "T" key down) and plug it into another Mac via Firewire. Your main computer will show up as an external hard drive and you can copy/backup your data over from your main computer to the second computer.
    1. Again...back up all of your data before trying any of this!
    2. Unplug all external peripheral devices (keyboard, mouse, etc)
    3. Restart your computer. If you get to a login screen (or if it automatically logs you in), plug your keyboard and mouse back in and download AppleJack http://www.versiont racker.com/ dyn/moreinfo/ macosx/19596
    4. Install AppleJack and run it by restarting your computer in Single User mode (hold down command+S keys when restarting.. .when black screen comes up let go of keys and at the prompt type "applejack AUTO restart" .
After your computer restarts, plug in all of your peripherals and see if you continue to get this error.
If you continue to get the error, you may want to try using other utilities like Disk Warrior. Also, to see if you have an issue like Steve's (with the bad RAM), you can use a utility called Tech Tool Deluxe by MicroMat. TTD is a great utility to check for both hardware issues and OS volume structure errors. It is also possible that a peripheral device is causing the kernel panic error (I've seen palm pilots, digital cameras, and other devices that have caused these errors when connected to a Mac).

  • Kernel Panic due to memory leak?

    Hello All
I have recently been noticing an issue where while playing music through iTunes my computer freezes and the music begins to skip forcing me to power down by holding in the power button. I have read most topics on this, however none address a memory leak in the 'iChat Agent.'
My machine has 4GB of memory (dual 1.8GHz G5, PPC) and have never had this issue before. I am not sure if it is caused by iTunes or if it is just happens to be when listening to music. I have begun to look around and I have noticed that my memory shoots up after 1-2 days of the computer being on. This is due to the iChat Agent... it takes up about 2GB of RAM. Is this normal?
It has happened 3 times now in the past 2 weeks. Any suggestions?

well... the first time i got the kernel panic. it was text overlay on my screensaver that was running. The second time the computer just froze. I wonder though if the kernel panic would have eventually happened.
i keep noticing now that this iChat Agent slowly creeps up during the day to about 2GB Real Memory and 2.4 Virtual Memory. is this normal or causing the freeze??
