Memory issues - kernel panics / system freezes with 1Gb Memory Card
I've recently updated my PowerBook OS to 10.4.7 and now more recently 10.4.8.
Prior to this, i had been running a pair of pc2700 memory cards (1x1Gb + 1x 512Mb) bought from crucial technology on 10.3.9 with no problems.
During the upgrade, i experienced complete system lock ups and kernel panics. pulling the 1Gb card resolved the problem.
So i thought it could be duff memory (it happens). I ran hardware checker, both long and short tests, ran memchecker from single user and there was no reported errors although i was still getting crashes.
I returned the memory to crucial and they replaced it and then i went to reinstall memory in the pb.
Once reinstalled, problems re-emerged. Both System profiler and iStat pro show both memory sticks as ok. both are pc2700 DDR.
i tried just the 1 Gb stick in alternate memory slots. with the memory in the lower slot i was getting system freezes, in the top slot i was getting kernel panics.
I've pulled the 1Gb and reverted to 768Mb (512Mb lower (crucial)/ 256MB (apple) upper) and i'm back to normal.
Now what?
As my mac is getting on, i'd like to get as much RAM in it as i can, ideally the 1.5Gb /2Gb which it can support. I'd be suprised if it could be the memory stick being duff (2 duff in a row?), its not a faulty memory slot as system profiler is showing that its full.
Any suggestions? Anything to do with how 10.4.8 handles the memory addressing?
Any help would be appreciated.
PowerBook G4 1Ghz FW800 Mac OS X (10.4.8)I've had that problem, too. I found out that it was one of my memory modules that were broken.
I'd say pop back in your other memory module, then get out your PowerBook DVD and stick it in Restart your PowerBook while holding down the Option Key on your keyboard until some buttons start to show up on your screen.
Select the Hardware Test one, then click the Arrow button. It'll boot into a utility and you can run a hardware test that includes checking your memory.
If any of your memory is bad, it'll show up like "**ERROR ERROR**" and give you a code.
After you've identified the hardware problem (hopefully just the RAM), then you can go to Crucial's website and fill out an RMA request to have the memory replaced. I'm pretty sure Crucial has a life-time warranty on their memory products. -
Until today, Arch was running essentially fine on my laptop. Today, I had a kernel panic which forced me to cold reboot the machine. On reboot, I got more panics. I get panics whether I boot to runlevel 3, runlevel 5 or runlevel s. I get them with the lts kernel as well as the current one.
I even get kernel panics if I boot from the install usb I installed from in November.
The only boot which seems to work is booting finnix which is installed to a separate partition for emergency use.
fsck reports lots of errors. If I get it to fix one error, it finds more on the next run. Sometimes it will claim the fs is clean but fsck -fn says there are still errors. Sometimes fsck -f will give the partition a clean bill of health but if I repeat it, it will find new errors.
I have tried with fsck from finnix and fsck from the install media and from the system in single user mode. The latter two end with kernel panics.
smartctl finds no problems with the disk.
fsck also finds problems with my backups which are stored on an external drive. This drive was not attached when the original kernel panic occurred. It showed errors without any kernel panic occurring while it was connected. However, fscking it from the arch install media just caused another kernel panic.
At least, they look like kernel panics. I'm not sure whether they are or not because in some cases (not the original), I can switch to another tty. Just I very quickly get a crash there too once that has happened and commands tend to hang, especially disk related commands such as blkid or fsck, or give errors.
I desperately need advice. I have critical data on the drive. My backup is entirely current but since that too has errors, I'm not sure what to do for the best. So far, everything I've tried seems to have only made the situation worse - fsck, looking at the backup, booting from the install media...
Most fsck errors seem to concern incorrect inodes (it offers to clear them), inodes with illegal blocks (it offers to clear them), directory structure e.g. illegal characters in entries (it offers to fix them), incorrect references etc. In some cases, attempts to fix things don't seem to succeed: another run produces the same errors. In other cases, fsck wants to undo previous fixes on a second run e.g. for the same node it will say the reference count is 4 and should be 1 but if I let it fix that, on the next run it will say it is 1 but should be 4. I'm also getting "internal errors" due to missing information.
I'm ending up with a lot of things in lost+found...
The system is currently booted from the install media. I'm trying to shutdown as I'm on my fourth tty but it has hung trying to unmount filesystems.
Filesystems with errors are primarily ext4 because most of my filesystems are ext4.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Do I need to remake the kernel for boot using mkinitcpio? Or do I need to repopulate /boot/efi/efi/grub/? I see there's some sort of inconsistency about memory. I'm wondering if one bit of the system is working with stale data about the installed RAM that I need to somehow update while the other bit is detecting the available RAM "live" and getting a different answer (since I've basically pulled 2*4G of RAM and installed 1*2G from a different source.)
Edit: I was getting this before my system went nuts with my previous memory installed and no problems. So worrying though it may be, I don't think it is more worrying than usual...

Kernel Panic -- Graphics chip error! Restarted.
Anyone out there seen ridiculous gfx card/kernel errors with Adobe CS2? My machine runs weird every time that I use Photoshop or Illustrator. Batches don't finish, and I have even been getting kernel panics lately. I would post it to Adobe, but kernel panics and hardware errors fall into Apple's domain. Hardware/Software/OS is fine for all but CS2, including opengl/coreimage/corevideo apps. I have a quad g5 with an nvidia 6800 GT gfx card with dual cinema displays and a wacom tablet. OSX is up-to-date, as is CS2.
Here's a snippet from my rather scary system log for yesterday, when I was attempting to run a batch process in illustrator...my logs are peppered with graphics chip errors every time that I use CS2. Any options other than wait for a new gfx driver from Apple or keep re-running the hardware tests?

Intermittent Kernel Panics - maybe related to iTunes? Something else?
I have been experiencing intermittent kernel panics the past few weeks - the ones where the screen goes grey and you get the message in multiple languages telling you that you have to restart your computer. I have been trying to figure out exactly what is causing them and, thus far, have been unable to come up with a definite pattern. It does seem that I am starting to narrow things down a bit.
The panics seem to occur when I have a lot of program running simultaneously. I usually have Eudora and Safari running most of the time, and will often fire up Power Point and Word. Then, I may add Excel, Preview, maybe Acrobat or Acrobat reader - I think you get the picture. However, it SEEMS that the culprit in all of this is that if I have had iTunes running, the kernel panics are more likely to occur. However, iTunes does not have to be running at the time of the panic (although I would guess that it has been in over half of the panics I’ve experienced). It just has to have been run recently. I
I have done a lot of troubleshooting, such as running Apple Hardware Test and other utilities and everything comes up just fine. I have done all the maintenance routines, I am using Apple RAM. I have done a lot of the other voodoo that folks suggest in these cases. I have read these forums and most of the posts relating to kernel panics are not quite what I am experiencing. (I did read about some of the audio issues that folks have been experiencing and I just uninstalled the SRS iWOW plugin from iTunes and will see if that makes a difference.)
One final thing. Recently, when I get a panic, there is no record of it in any logs that I can find. Therefore, I cannot trace what was happening just before my MacBook Pro went down. I did find one log (I forget which one now) that suggested that before the most recent panic this morning the last thing logged was activity by DefaultFolder. However, that may have just been the last thing I did that was actually logged. I had stepped away from my computer and when I came back the kernel panic screen was showing.
I am guessing I may need to do a clean reinstall, but before doing that I thought I’d call upon the collective wisdom of the members of these forums. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
Bob Q.We had a kernel panic last week - iTunes (v.7) was running at the time, so was Mail, but I was building a photo album in iPhoto when it happened. After reboot (took a LONG time to boot up) We repaired permissions and went on as normal. Previously, we had a hard shut down due to a power outage (don't ask: yes of course we have a UPS, but the outage had lasted all day. when the power finally came back on, i powered up the computer and launched Mail. Then the power failed again (grrr!), and apparently, after being out all day, the battery in the UPS didn't even have enough charge for me to have time to quit Mail and power down.)
Then we began to have spontaneous Sleep syndrome: the computer would just suddenly sleep during activity. After this happened a few times, we reset the PRAM, ran the maintenance scripts using Terminal, but the problem persisted. In fact, once it went beyond sleep and shut itself down.
This week, we went into the System Errors log and found this:
kernel[0]: IOSMUPwrController:: OverTemp notification
kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
kernel[0]: System Sleep
kernel[0]: IOBluetoothHCIController::restartShutdownWL this is a wake from sleep
kernel[0]: System Wake
kernel[0]: Wake event 0020
kernel[0]: USB caused wake event (OHCI)
kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 52 built-in: handleSelfIDInt - received quads == 0. issuing bus reset
kernel[0]: UniNEnet::monitorLinkStatus - Link is up at 100 Mbps - Full Duplex
mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en0 (192.168.2.6); delaying packets by 5 seconds
So at this point, we're thinking that the computer was overheating. We've since cleared some space on the internal HD (we only had about 5% available) and also physical space around the unit. Haven't had the problem in two days now. Never had a second kernel panic either...
But we have heard that possibly the fan might be failing... we're still under AppleCare warranty and are thinking that we should maybe call Apple to open a trouble ticket just in case.
your thoughts?

10.5.6 update crash followed by kernel panics
I ran the update, but it crashed midway through complaining about the media it was being run from, tried a restart, but kernel panics, tried single user mode, but get multiple "Package 0 didn't get an HPET", to fail at the end in "No HPETs available...CPU(s) configured incorrectly" followed by panic and some stack trace dump (included at end), tried resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and the PRAM, all to no avail, ran the extended hardware test with no errors, but I am able to boot up into the emergency boot partition created by Tech Tool Pro.
Apart from reformatting my hard drive is there any way to recover my Mac, please!

Have you tried starting your mac up from your Leopard disk that came with the machine and if so, can you run disk permissions from there (on the startup drive you wish to recover)?
NB: some reckon it's not desirable to run disk permissions from the disk but I have done it in the past and it got me started at least, repairing disk permissions AGAIN from the startup drive, (as the system was up and running)
NB2: If you can start up, you could run the combo updater: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_6_ComboUpdate

10.4.9 kernel panic & jagged GUI
Hey guys!
Right after I upgrade to 10.4.9, a kernel panic occurred. In the following three to four days, my PowerBook "kernel panic"ed five times.
And yesterday, another problem emerged, the GUI became buggy, creepy: straight lines in the icons become jagged if the cursor moving by; characters that normally display in regular font form could be italic, such as, the ones in window title, file names. This problem is still hanging around even after a clean reinstall.
It seem to me that all these is such a mess.
Anyone who can shed a little light upon these issues?
Thank you very much!First off, there isn't such a thing as a "clean install". My user tip explains the options available. If you did an erase and install and the kernel panics are still happening, you have a hardware problem, likely with the GPU. Run the hardware test that came with the machine:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287
If missing, call this number to ask for replacement discs:
800 810 2323
Regardless of the results, Apple is the only one that can fix it.
10.4.9 didn't cause it. You just happened to have an underlying issue that came to the fore when the update was done.
Also I might add, check my FAQ on updating* to avoid issues happening on updates in the future:

Kernel Panics Appear to Be Gone!
Hey, so after trying everything recommended here, I called Apple and they sent me two new memory modules for my new iMac 24". I replaced the 2GB of RAM that came originally on the iMac with the ones that Apple sent, reformatted the hard drive, re-installed the system, did all the updates, etc. and voila! Less hum, no kernel panics in the last three days, no problems with the iMac emerging from sleep or doing random crashes. Judging by what MenuMeters says, my Mac is even using Memory more efficiently! : ) So... back to enjoying life with Maggie (iMac 24").
Congrats first off. I find it interesting that every time I had a problem it must be my 3rd rate, 3rd party Ram according to whatever tech I got on the line not Apple's superior Ram.

Kernel panic 10.5.8 PPC G5
---2 of the 3 sets of RAM sticks are by Crucial and the other 1GB sticks shipped with the G5 PPC. I ran the current RAM configuration for a month or more successfully before the crashes started happening again. Before that, I ran 6 GB RAM of mixed manufacture for years before crashes began.
--I just replaced the system drive a month ago
--New optical drive a few months before that.
--New backup drive this year, as well. WD Studio for idiots. Running Time Machine on it. It's not a great choice for the job, in fact very inconvenient. With much effort, did an entire restore and reinstall just before the new year.
--Does an underlying 'state' of kernel panic result in programs and hardware behaving strangely? The two new crashes since all of these new parts were installed seem to emerge either from troubleshooting installation and operation of new peripherals and software or from running multiple operations at the same time. But I'm not running more operations at the same time than I ever did with only 6 GB RAM, for example
--what am I actually supposed to do to make kernel panic GO AWAY. i don't really understand the document that says to download a debugging kit. Just download and 'use it'?Ah! good to know.
However, here is indeed a new one:

Kernel Panic and inability to boot up
My 17" iMac, Intel Core Duo, 512 MB RAM has a kernel panic after I ran Tech Tool Platinum.
Everything was fine until TTPlat needed to reboot into the emergency partition "eDrive" so it can run whatever tests it needed to on the primary volume.
It refused to boot up, screen says something about a kernel panic, lots of other alphanumeric stuff, some references to "inability to find drivers" or something, "Backtrace failed", etc.
No method of booting succeeds. I tried safe boot mode, single user mode, verbose mode, even popped my Tiger install disk in and it didn't boot thru that. (Now it's stuck inide the CD drive). Even tried booting thru my external HD. Nothing.
Apparently it doen't accept keyboard command. I've ued 2 keyboard, a newer wireles one and an older beat-up cabled one.
Thanks for any advice/assistance.Thanks, BD, I will attempt that.
I am not sure how to disconnect the internal HD. Sounds like something that the Apple Store or Mac reseller a few miles away would have to do. This is approaching the (so far) limits of my "geek abilities" .
I have maybe a stupid question or theory: Could it be that my iMac is still attempting to boot into the Tech Tool eDrive, and that is why I am getting the kernel panic? Somewhere in my readings of my manual (Ted Landau's "Mac OS X Help Line, Tiger edition") and some online perusing I found some stuff re: insufficient memory and lack of drivers as a cause. If OS X 10.4.11 didn't complete the upgrade in the eDrive then perhaps some needed startup items just aren't there? Is that "fixed in place" as in it will keep attempting to boot into the eDrive until the issue is resolved, or will it somehow revert to its normal startup routine after some period of inactivity? (Again, sorry if that sounds stupid, or if I am using incorrect terminology. I am trying to learn. What I am finding out so far in my readings of the Mac's innards is fascinating. Once this is over I wanna dig into the UNIX command line. My intellectual curiosity is piqued.)
I will try your suggestion soon. -
I keep having kernel panics, and I think it's Adobe Flash player
A few weeks ago I updated Flash and I began having multiple kernel panics every day.
I deleted Flash and nothing happened for 48 hours. Then I re-installed Flash and now I'm having slightly different problems.
The first set happened when I tried to wake the computer up from sleep. I would get the typical gray message.
For this round, the computer isn't waking up at all from sleep. I can hear the drive whirring and the computer sounds ON, but the screen isn't coming on. I am having to do an emergency shutdown. When I restart the computer, I get the message saying that there had been a problem and would I like to send a report?
I've done everything from the kernel panic troubleshooting sheet except re-install the software.
I'm really frustrated.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting due to Kernel Panic. Ideas for how to fix?
So my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps randomly restarting, and giving me a screen that says something like "your computer restarted due to a problem."
Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.
Here's the issue report:

Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

I have a 2010 macbook pro currently running 10.6.8 that has served me very well over the last 4 years, except in recent months it has been getting frequent kernel panics. Started every few weeks, now happens multiple times a day. It seems to happen more frequently when I'm doing something like playing a game which makes me think it might be related to the GPU or the computer overheating, but I can't find any specifics on how I'd go about troubleshooting from here. A typical report after a kernel panic is below:

You may be able to use gfxCardStatus 2.3 to switch to using the other GPU instead which should stop the frequent panics until you get the motherboard replaced or buy a new computer.
Of course don't dismiss the possibility that the software you have installed has installed extensions that are not compatible:
com.cisco.nke.ipsec 2.0.1
com.quark.driver.TetherBerry 1.0.0d6
com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 7.0 14922.693916

com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 7.0 14922.693916
Try running in Safe Mode to see if the panics stop. If they do, then you need to completely uninstall the software responsible for the above extensions: Cisco, Quark, and Parallels. -

Where oh where has the search tool gone? Without a search feature, this forum is nearly worthless. I see a search bar at the very top, but that searches the whole Apple site. What gives?
