Kernel Panic every time I put MB to sleep...

Hello all,
I have a consistent kernel panic upon putting my computer to sleep. It doesn't matter if I do it through the Apple menu or by closing the machine. It's consistently telling me that it's the "kernel_task" is related to the panic.
This is what I've tried:
1. Uninstalled (manually) all the software I had recently installed (Concentrate, Evernote, growl. Removed logs and other traces they can leave, which is no small task to figure out in the case of Evernote!).
3. Repaired disk permissions
4. Reset SMC
5. Deleted and reset the Energy Management preferences
My next thought was reinstalling SL but thought I'd see if you guys had any thoughts first.
Here's the report from the last Panic:

So, it appears that your problem began relatively recently. I know that Growl has been a problem for others. Given that your problem began relatively recently, then reinstalling by erase and install could be a good alternative. Be sure you are well backed up. And, I would not be inclined to migrate my apps.

Thank you for your reply BDAqua.
Yes I ran short and the Extended Test. All pass. One of the first things I did is Safe Boot several times I also repaired permissions. Safe boot takes no longer than before the crashes and as long as I stay in safe boot mode it won't crash. What does that mean?I also ran MacJanitor and removed the SCCUZI card Apple put in when I bought the G4 as well as an M-Audio Delta 66 card which I do not use (both) anymore. I also started up on an external firewire drive 10.4.6. It also (crashes) does the same thing.
I was hoping somebody understands the crash report I enclosed? Isn't that suppose to say what went wrong?
Thank you again for your input BDAqua

  • Kernel Panic every time I plug in my external drive

I'm getting kernel panics every time I plug in an external drive. This is happening on a MacBook Pro as well as on a Mac Mini (G4). Both are running 10.5.6.
The drive is one of the Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB drives that are having all sorts of other problems. I have it in a CoolMax USB 2.0 enclosure (this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817159076) I've been using this setup for a couple of weeks and didn't have any problems until this morning when I consistently get this kernel panic.
Obviously I can't run Disk Utility on it, unless there's a way to plug it in without it automounting. I could boot my MBP to XP, but the drive has two partitions and both are HFS+. Ideally I would like to preserve the data on the drive. They're only backups, but I don't have access to the originals at the moment, as my main machine is out of commission. Lots of hardware problems lately.
    Any ideas?

Probably is. They get dusty. Shut down your computer and clean it out with a vacuum (don't blow dust back inside).

  • Mid 2009 macbook pro kernel panic every time I try to work.

I updated my mid 2009 mb pro a week ago. I got new RAM and got rid of the optical drive (I'm planning on putting an ssd there). And now every time the computer has to work a little bit (youtube+illustrator for example) and the processor has to work a little harder, the computer restarts giving me a kernel panic log.

  • Kernel panic every time I try to backup

I am running Mac OS X 10.8.4. I bought the newly released 3TB Airport Time Capsule two days ago.
After installing Parallels, my disk became corrupted and using the Option key during start up to access the disk repair utility was not successful - the utility was unable to restore the disk. As such, I formatted and reinstalled Mac OS X 10.8. I note the fact it should be a fresh copy with no compatability issues.
The only thing I have touched is a 32GB RAM aftermarket upgrade which was done 2 months ago.
Every time I try to run the Time Machine backup to the Airport Time Capsule - it starts the backup process but around 1-2 hours later I find the computer has rebooted and there is an error report. The error report is reproduced below.
How can I fix the problem?

You hsve a fault in a memory stick or (less likely) in some other internal component. You also have a corrupt boot volume, which may or may not be due to the same hardware fault.
Remove the memory upgrade and reinstall the original RAM.
Then, to repeat, back up all data to a USB or FireWire hard drive, not to the Time Capsule.
You're going to have to erase the internal hard drive, which means that you need at least two backups of everything on it. One backup is not enough. You can try again to back up to the TC after replacing the RAM. If it still doesn't work, you'll need a second USB or FireWire drive to back up to.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

  • RAID mirror with software utility caused kernel panic every time

Using disc utility to make a mirror of 2 drives, click create and i get kernel panic and have to power off machine. if i try to start the machine with either of the two disks in it (together or individually) i get same kernel panic and have to power off.
The disks are in an external storage array (sonnet d500). I have a second storage array with raided disks in and i have raided disk inside the mac too. these all work fine..
originally 2 weeks ago i had the 2 disks working in a group of 4 disks set as a mirror of 2 striped disks. One disk in this setup failed and with this config you can never 'recover'or rebuild it - you get a degraded mirror and you can backup the data, but you must completely rebuild the raid again as the mirror of stripes never lets you add a new disk in again.period. not good.
I replaced the failed disk and rebuilt the mirror of stripes. this lasted a day until a second disk failed (all 4 were bought at same time so i was kind of expecting that to happen once one failed).
i replaced the second faulty hdd and thought about my disk usage and decided i would not make another mirror of stripes and i would make 2 mirrors instead for safe-ish storage and then transfer data to a striped raid set for editing from instead of direct from the mirror of stripes volume.
i tried to delete the raid but got a kernel panic
if i started the machine with any of the 4 disks i would get a kernel panic.
i moved the disks one by one into an older G5 running Tiger and managed to erase the raid info on 2 of them. The two new ones had some strange raid info and the Tiger machien thought there was an extra disk in the machine and would not erase or partition or allow me to destroy the raid whatever i tried.
I will be moving these now into an old XP PC to try to erase the boot records etc and erase them to be able to use them again in either mac pro or G5. painful..
so.. i ended up with 2 erased drives and have 2 new drives with dodgy raid info that causes kernel panics on the leopard machine and wont go in the Tiger machine.
The two erased drives are what ive now been trying to use in the mac pro to create a mirror - this now caused kernel panics when creating the mirror to start with and when installed in the machine at all. so i will be erasing them again in the tiger machine soon (its busy erasing with zeros another new disk that i added to the Tiger machine 2 weeks ago which seems to have some fault when raided!!! but thats another story).
so.. is anyone else having problems with creating basic mirror in 10.5.4 or is it just me??
i have a sonnet tempo e4p card with 2 external sata disk enclosures, latest firmware for the e4p card. all other previously existing raid volumes are working fine. i have one set of 2 striped disks, one set of 3 striped disks and one set of 2 stripes which are mirrored - all happy and working fine. but i cant make a new mirror of 2 disks...
I phoned Apple support and they said all raid info was kept on the disk itself and nothing on the actual machine and suggested i take the machine to an apple care centre for some tlc (although its disk i am having a problem with). since all my other disk arrays work fine i don't really want to rebuild the whole machine from scratch if i can avoid it.
Any suggestions of what i can try ??

well it turns out the new disk i bought just werent any good. my g5 powermac raid mirror issue was related to one new disk with lots of bad blocks (speed tools showed that up) so i have learnt my lesson on cheap non raid disks for raid..
am waiting on a couple of new ultrastar enterprise disks to tuen up so i can go back to the macpro and try to add a mirror again.
i am still stuck wih several new disks that i cannot format now in the macpro on leopard or on the g5 powermac with tiger.
ive tried softraid and that cant do it, speedtools pcformat util cant do it, disk utility crashes when i try to eras them and diskutil from termianl starts then doenst get anywhere and my pc sata card doesnt work so my last resort pc option still doesnt help me clear the partition map on these drives - ones that diskutility on leopard made for me - and drives which still cause kernel panics on the macpro if i put them in it..
here is what diskutil says on my g5:
    /dev/disk0
    #: type name size identifier

disk0 is the one with the bad partition info.
it thinks it has a double raid as the console shows on startup:
(both store45 and cache it thinks are on this disk - cache was my old mirror of stripes set on other machine, store45 was new name for my mirror, so seems like it hadnt deleted the original raid partition info before making new info which now kernel panics)

so currently i have 2 new 500gb disks which cant be partitioned back to anything at all on either machine. looks like i will have to buy a new pc to reformat them..
any suggestions of how to clear the partition map info and get them back to freespace ??

  • Kernel Panic every time I use Compressor to export a movie?

Wondering if anyone can help decipher what might be the root cause of these Kernel Panic restarts?
I am using the apple software Compressor 4 and every time it is about half way through exporting the computer restarts.

There is a possibility that your RAM is failing (is this original RAM or 3rd party upgrade?).
panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff8022e526cf): "a freed zone element has been modified: expected 0xdeadbeefdeadbeef but found 0xdea5beefdeadbeef, bits changed 0x8000000000000, at offset 136 of 160 in zone: ipc ports"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2422.115.4/osfmk/kern/zalloc.c:461
1 single bit has changed in RAM that has been marked with a pattern 0xdeadbeefdeadbeef that is intended to detect when it is modified after having been released by some kernel code (including 3rd party extensions).
While some kernel code could have told the OS it was done using a bit of RAM, but then continued to use it after the OS wrote 0xdeadbeefdeadbeef into the RAM, it is also possible that the RAM is failing and switched the value of one bit from 1 to 0
0xd is 1101 in binary bits
0x5 is 0101 in binary bits
You may want to download and run Rember over and over again (as it set the repeat loops to a very high number or click Maximum).  You want to run lots of passes as RAM failures can be intermittent.
    <http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/>
You should do a clean boot, quit all apps, including anything that runs in your Menu Bar.  Maybe even consider booting into Safe Mode (see next paragraph for safe mode info).  This is so that as much RAM as possible is available for Rember to test.
If Rember does not find anything, you can try booting into Safe Mode to see if it is some 3rd party addition that is causing problems
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>
If you like, you can also post the output from EtreCheck for the forum members to analyze in case there is something installed that might be causing your problems.

  • Why do I get a kernel panic every time I unplug my g17 and use battery?

My laptop has given me fits for a longtime, so much that I usually use it more like a desktop and try never to disconnect the ac power. Every time I unplug and use the computer's battery, it works fine for a while, then eventually I get a kernel panic.
Sometimes, it's so bad, I have to force quit/restart up to 10 times for the laptop to start up again. Sometime it starts, but the screen doesn't.
I used to love this computer, now it's a pain...
    Thanks.

  • Installing WEFT causes kernel panics every time.

    Anyone else seen this?
Each time I try to install WEFT (Tool for embedding fonts for using in webpages/HTML) via WINE I get a full-on kernel panic. Whether an installation with the database components or not.
Should not really happen, should it? Brand new Macbook with 10.5.1.
Any suggestions for other Mac OS font embedding tools would be gratefully received but thought I should flag this up.
    Thanks.

Should not really happen, should it? Brand new Macbook with 10.5.1.
Is it your experience that trying to run windows stuff via wine on the latest release of OS X always works just fine?
Any suggestions for other Mac OS font embedding tools would be gratefully received but thought I should flag this up.
I'm no expert, but my impression was that Mac OS doesn't support eot font technology and you have to run the Weft tools on Windows. However the latest versions of webkit do support a simpler version of font embedding:

  • Macbook Pro won't start? kernel panic every time

I am having a problem even the people at the genius bar cannot solve.
I took it in the other day, and the diagnostics run by the employee could not find anything wrong with my hardware, yet whenever I attempt to start it up, it produces a kernel panic. Until today I could not get the computer to even get past the grey loading apple screen.
Here is what I know so far:
-2.2 ghz processor intel mac from mid 2008-2009
    -running version 10.5.8 os x
    - I have run it in single user mode, and typed in fsck -fy and a pcsd.pub problem occurs, saying I have the wrong block count (16 instead of 17). After running it in this mode, it says it is repaired, but I am not convinced, as it has frozen on me (while the screen flickers constantly) if i try to repair the disk.
    does anybody have any guesses?
what is the next thing I can do from home?

Your hard disk's directory structure is corrupt. Disk Utility may be able to repair it to the extent that you will be able to mount the volume for the purposes of extracting your data should you not already have a backup, but that will not change the fact that the hard disk has already failed and requires replacement.
Erasing and the disk and reinstalling OS X may work for a while but the problem is certain to return.
The Apple Store can replace the HD for a reasonable fee, or you can do it yourself.

  • Macbook restarts every time I put it to sleep

    Hey
For some reason my Macbook suddenly decided to start restarting when I put it to sleep. This happens both when I close the lid and when I set it to sleep through the menu, and it has (so far) happened every time until I booted into Safe Mode (as recommended in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5216881 ), where it slept like it should.
I suspect something fishy going on in the Energy Saver department, but I'm very much unsure. Any help will be appreciated =)

Have you tried resetting the SMC? Power management is one of the features it controls and if there is a problem there it might explain the odd behavior...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
    Give it a shot,
    David

  • My iMac needs to be rebooted every time I put it to sleep

My iMac needs to be rebooted almost every time when I wake it from sleeping. Is this normal?  Ether the screen darkens and it will tell me to reboot by holding down the power button or the screen is just totally blank. It's been doing it for a long time and I thought it was just mac security updates running in the backgrownd or something but it seems to be getting worse.
    Thanks

    Do this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

You have 3rd party drivers installed.  Try booting into Safe Mode and see the problem still happens.
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>
You have a mix of RAM modules.  If the 3rd party drivers are not the problem, consider restoring the Mac to "Original" Apple provided RAM to see if it is the 3rd party RAM additions you have made.
