Kernel Panic! Hardware Problem? Auth stops!
Over the last few days we've run into a strange situation on our G4 PowerMac running OS X Tiger Server and services that require authentication just locking up while other services continue to run. This is a big problem because our Mail services need to say up, but authentication of all kinds fails.
Looking in the logs is see the following right around the beginning of the problem...
Jun 20 13:04:07 resserver memberd[59]: Fatal error -1 submitting to kernel (1: Operation not permitted)\n
Jun 20 13:04:07 resserver memberd[59]: Fatal error -1 submitting to kernel (1: Operation not permitted)\n
Jun 20 13:04:07 resserver memberd[14099]: memberd starting up
I found this post that describes almost exactly the same problem I'm having with much the same characteristcs but no one seemed to respond with an answer...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=530973&tstart=966
Has anyone run into this before? From what I've seen in my Google searching it seems to be hardware related. But scanning my logs I can't seem to find anything being reported and everything seems to be running just fine after a restart of the box. This is the second time though that I've had to restart it, and it's beginning to make me nervous!
Okay so here are some details from my logs:
It shows activity as per normal. With my clients logging in to retrieve their e-mail etc, then at exactly: Jun 20 13:04:07 you'll see the failure of memberd. You'll see after that that authentication services failing: "SASL LOGIN authentication failed". I dropped the box shortly after that so you can see the boot process.

Kernel Panic - Hardware or Software?
Kernel Panic - Hardware or software?
Mac Pro Early 2008. 2 x 2.8 Quad Core. 16 GB RAM. OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
This morning my Mac Pro Refused to start.
It goes into an endless cycle of the grey panel message "Your computer needs to restart etc. ...... " with each restart failing.
Here is what I have done and discovered so far:
1) Disconnected all peripherals and network and secondary monitor leaving only principle Apple monitor, Apple Keyboard and Apple mouse. No help - Problem remains.
2) Done a recovery start up and repaired disks and permissions (nothing significant found there). No help - problem remains.
3) I can do a safe boot and have tried rebooting from this. No help - problem remains.
However inspecting the system from Safe Boot starts to show some interesting things.
4) If I open Acitivity Monitor and look at RAM it is completely clogged with Page Ins (Over 14 GB of them). The Pie Chart is completely red. This would look like a RAM issue. There is almost 160 GB of free space on my startup disc and 16GB of RAM Installed.
5) "About this Mac" Memory tab correctly finds and identifies all the DIMMS and shows their size and slots correctly.
No. 4 would seem to indicate a memory problem but No 5 would seem to indicate that the DIMMS are functional and the system able to address them.
I have tried removing the DIMMs and trying them pair by pair and in various different combinations. No change. The system can consistently identify them and their slots but the Only Safe Boot works and the Page In log jam is always present.
I am mystified as whether I have a hardware or software problem here. If it is software then a full clean re-install followed by a time machine restore may solve things. What worries me is that if I have a hardware problem and attempt this I may end up with no OS as well.
Any suggestions for further analysis? Any wisdoms greater than mine can explain the significance of the Page ins? Should I try re-installlng first or is it time to visit the repair shop?
Any help welcome please.
David MacSorry to be late responding. I have been unexpectedly bedridden since posting and only able to try your suggestion today.
Sadly I cannot get Apple's hardware test to run at all. Holding down the D key does nothing at all. Accessing the test by internet isn't going to work on a 2008 machine. Tried the original installation disc as suggested by apple. Doesn't work. Since Lion install I cannot start up from any disc pre Lion- it causes a black screen 'You need to restart ......".
So stymied for now.
Looks like I'll have to try ans see if a full clean re-install will work. If it doesn't then back to the shop.
I have the whole system fully backed up externally so nothing to lose in the long run. Just don't want more chaos than necessary ;o) -
Kernel panic: hardware or software problem?
Can anyone read those logs and tell me what could be the problem?
I bought a refurbished MBP 15" 2.2GHz i7 quad core with anti glare screen and originally 750GB HDD 4Gb of ram and it arrived on September 1st. I wanted to upgrade to 8GB of RAM and a SSD but at the moment I upgraded only the SSD (to a 120GB Corsair Force 3). In those days I experienced 5 kernel panic. It's not the first mac I buy, and those kernel panic are a bit too frequent and unnatural. I run the Apple Hardware Test twice (in the extended test) but no errors there.
Before getting Kernel panic, it could happen that I see some graphic artifacts on screen (maybe it's the ram? the graphic card(s)?). I installed gfxCardStatus v2.1 to switch to intel integrated GPU.
I'm running on mac os 10.6.8, all software is up to date.
Here are the logs:

MacBook pro 8,2 late-2011 after series of kernel panics and video glitches stopped booting
Hello, friends... I am shattered, my MacBook Pro stopped booting today. It all started two days ago, when I came to India and got USB modem dongle from Tata Docomo. It was making Lion kernel panic whenever it was connected to Internet, but had no effect while disconnected or unplugged from the laptop. Then yesterday I had a kernel panic while playing a video in VLC, then while using Skype, and after a while I figured out the pattern, it would crash every time computer switched on the graphic card instead of the on-board CPU graphics. It would also crash with striped blue screen and misplace it horizontally. All this time I was looking for the solution on the internet, and ran two hardware tests, both normal and extended, both showed no issues, tried booting into safe mode getting the striped blue kernel panic screen after the progress bar filled. Resetting the ram also didn't help. Now it will not boot at all, only the hardware test is still working. After the logo screen in normal mode it just goes power off or hangs in grey screen for infinity.
Please, I need your help guys, I'm desperate, went to India for a few months and laptop breaking down almost straight away, and I'm also a dj, so its like a musical instrument to me, that I cannot work without...
Again - MacBook Pro 8,2 Late-2011, 2,4 ghz, 750gb hdd, 4gb ram, ati 1gb graphic card and running Lion 10.7.3, thanks!Try the fixes here, take it back for a warranty call

Kernel panic: hardware or software related
I had two kernel panic incidents recently. I know that most kernel panics are related to hardware. I have not 3rd party ram and only my monitor, keyboard (apple) and mouse installed. That is, no additional usb or firewire devices. I understand that faulty ram is one possibility and that ram tests may not fully diagnose the problem. I tested my ram with rember and the techtools that I got with my applecare (runs out march 2009.) I was not able to boot into the techtools DVD so had to run it off of the harddrive after updating. I ran rember with the finder still active (there is the option to run rember without the finder running). The memory tests in rember and techtools passed which I understand may not tell me much. I have not yet run the memory test off of my install disks.
Before updating to 10.4.11 using the combo updater, I booted from my install disk and repaired the drive (it was ok) and repaired permissions (from the install disk). I did the same two tasks from the install disk after the updates, although I let a couple of days pass before doing these tasks. After reading in another forum that repairing permissions from the install disk (os 10.4.5) might have caused some problems, I just repaired permissions while running from my day-to-day account.
I have decent backups.
I thought I'd run my two kernel panics by you folk in this forum to see if anyone has any suggestions.
*kernel panic #1*
I got this kernel panic the other day on shutting down. That is I shut down using the shutdown command in the apple menu then got the kernel panick The only new thing that I had done (asides from finally updating to macosx 10.4.11 and the latest security patch) was that I had my idisk set to automatic, so the mirror agent was active. kernel panic #2
This actually happened twice put I only have one crash log. I think that the reason why I only had one crash log is because after the second kernel panic, I had to boot into safe mode to get rid of my icalalarm scheduler from my login items because of some conflict. Anyway, the scenario is that I am using firefox 3.0 (I have the latest version) and then open google earth. After I try to open google earth, I get kernel panic.

Darwin Kernel Version 8.11.1: Wed Oct 10 18:23:28 PDT 2007; root:xnu-792.25.20~1/RELEASE_I386I went to the Apple Store in Bridgewater NJ, receiving very thorough attention from Alma (Apple Genuis). She read the report from my earlier conversation with Apple Care, I told her about the error message from AHT, and she then did a very thorough diagnostic using one of their utilities. Her theory was that if it was hardware related, that it might be the graphics card on the logic board or the memory. Seems that she was having a hard time finding the error code for my mini model in their database. <shrug> The memory test took about an hour and it passed. And I think it passed the other tests she did, but when she tried to reboot the machine, got a kernel panic which told her that it is the logic board (graphics card that is soldered on the logic board.
The Bridgewater NJ store is undergoing some renovations so they are, for the moment, not able to order parts and have lost much of their backroom. But she took down a detailed report with new apple care case number after making an appointment for me at another apple store (Menlo Park, I've been there before, they are good). She also told them to order a logic board. I work tomorrow, so I am going this Friday afternoon. -
Kernel Panic Hardware Issue?
Hello,
I have a late 2008 MBP (MacbookPro5.1) and having kernel panics all the time. It has a 128GB ssd, but replaced with my old hdd and it's still the same, so it's probably a hardware problem. If I don't have any HDD inside and trying to boot from the Mountain Lion USB it still have kernel panic and can't do anything.
BUT... I can boot in safe boot mode.
Any idea?
I had some different error messages like:

The panic you reported in this topic was on a newly installed HDD or an older HDD. Is the problem only on a HDD or only on an SSD or on both in the same computer?
Did you prep the new drives properly?
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive. -
Kernel panic, hardware test lion---
hi
I've been several kernel panic in the last few days,,, running lion since it's been released and never had a problem... since some days i have a pop-up about the un-upadated perian software.. today i deleted perian..
how can i run a hardware test with lion?
what can you suggest?
thanks
msorry but neither works:
Use Apple Hardware Test
Open the Help Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear) and choose Print to print these instructions.
Disconnect all external devices except the keyboard, mouse, display, and speakers. If you have an Ethernet cable or external DVD drive, disconnect them.
Restart your computer, holding down the “D” key while the computer restarts. After your computer restarts, you should see the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen. If you don’t, Apple Hardware Test may not be available on your computer. You may be able to start Apple Hardware Test from the Internet. Reconnect your computer to the network, and then restart your computer while holding down both the Option and “D” keys. -
Help! G3 freaking out/kernel panic/memory problems
Hi All,
I put some pc 133 512 mb memory in my G3 [which is actually pc 100, but supposedly should work fine] and then it kernel paniced.
Now it mostly seems to recognize memory in the slot closest to the screen. But only 64 and 32 mb sticks.
Plus, it only boots to OS9 which is on a seperate partition to OSX which is where it is supposed to go, even after setting OSX as the startup.
It also always wants the time adjusted- perhaps the battery is flat- I put it all aside for a month after it happened.
Could the 512 MB pc 133 have fried something? It seems very fragile.
Safe start just keeps rebooting, and X on startup is ignored and os 9 starts.
HELP!!!
Any ideas gratefully received,
WumpsdadHey annexit,
Yes I get a lot of donated computers so I have probably 80 or so sticks of RAM around here mostly PC 100 and 133 out of both PCs and Macs. I'm constantly sorting through them and marking them: "Works w/ iMac G3, Kernal panic in iMac G4, Works in tower G4 Sawtooth, not recognized...etc."
..old G3 iMac 500 Mhz with one 128 and one 256 PC133 (probably scammed from a G4 tower when I upgraded that),
Was planning to replace the 128 with a 512 PC100 - I saw the post from spudnuty
If you look here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac/G3450MHz_500MHz_600MHz700MHz
OWC sells a mix of PC 100 and 133 for that machine. They are very good at taking it back if it doesn't work.
Is your G4 Tower still on your net?
running panther, safari crashing and I can't print to the attached printer from the intel laptops wirelessly..
Hmm that should work. I use a MDD G4 Tower as my workhorse and am able to print to it no problem. It's running Leopard now however but I don't remember a problem when it was running Tiger.
Running Panther could be your problem. I was lucky when I bought an iMac G4 for $50 (bad hard drive) in the bottom of the box was a complete set of Tiger CD installers (rare).

NVIDIA GPU Kernel Panic - Hardware or Software?
Hi, everyone,
I generally don't game on my MBP, except for some Torchlight, Plants and Zombies, but recently, decided to pick up Europa Universalis 3 developed by Virtual Programming for Mac.
I've been playing for days and then last night, in the midst of playing, the game froze, the screen flickered and basically crashed, forcing me to power down and back up. I've only ever had two kernel panics in the life of this machine, this being the second (the other not game related).
I dug up the system log and this is the only entry associated with the crash:
11-05-30 10:46:33 PM kernel NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0x6 = Fifo: Parse Error 00000069
This error continues until I shut it down.
From searching on this forum, this seems to be specific to NVIDIA, as the ATI Macs/MBP don't have these issues. Is this a software issue (due to poor drivers) or something more serious like a hardware issue that I should actually bring in to Apple and have repaired? My sense is it's a software issue, and I should stay away from 3D gaming on this MBP despite the fact that it has an integrated and discrete solutions.
From what I understand, too, the ATI-based MBP don't have performance issues, and perform well.
First Starcraft 2's poor performance (despite this hardware) and now this.
Very disappointed.
Thanks for your input.
Cheers,
Wilde.Hi, Linc Davis, I have a same one, and a few other people with Mac book pro Retina 2012 GPU-Panics
Than, screen goes off, but you can still hear computer working and keyboard works. You can change volume and hear it changing.
I checked it and if you plug external HDMI screen, it still works. Than when you run a hard video program, it crashes with GPU-Panic, and external screen also goes off. It crashes right when it slightly changing colors (switching from one Video card to more powerful one.)

Battery Failure and Kernel Panics. Help!
Hi all,
Thanks in advance for your help.
About a week ago, after I had left my computer alone for two days, it randomly shut off when the meter up top said it had 40 minutes. Then, when it was closed in sleep mode and I opened it, it told me it had to be restarted--which I, through reading the forum, found out is a kernel panic. Since then it has not given me any more kernel panics, however, it consistently turns off at about the forty minute mark. This is what I have done so far:
attempted to recalibrate the battery, which hasn't worked/I don't know if it really can because it doesn't get below 20% without shutting off. (btw, when I turn it back on, with the plug in, the battery is not dead, it's at around 20%).
have done the first three steps in the x guide to kernel panics.
Does this sound like a battery problem, and if so how do I solve that?
or does it sound like a kernel panic, hardware problem?
Thank you so much for any help, I desperately want to fix my computer.
Besos.
ibook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)Hi alby23,
Welcome to the Discussions.
If your computer is two years old, it's in need of a new battery. If you open System Profiler (Apple menu>About This Mac>More Info) the battery's capacity and charge cycles will be listed. If the Capacity is ~2000 you have less than 50% of a new battery's which is 4400mAh.
You may be able to solve part of the problem by resetting the PMU. That may get the time/percentage back to a more accurate number. If that doesn't help, get a new battery.

Kernel Panics, Drive Corruption, Directory Issues.
Desktop M8840LL/A Dual 1.25GHz PowerPC G4 (FW800) MDD
2GB Ram, 2 WD - 500GB IDE Drives Internal, 4 SATA Dr (2 WD - 500 GB SATA internal 1 WD 500GB SATA, One WD 640GB SATA external ), Sonnet Tempo SATA X4i PCI Card, ATI 9600Pro AGP, 1- 23in Apple Cinema Display, One 24in Samsung Display. 3 Firewire 250Gb WD external Drives.
This setup was running great for 2 years until a four year old WD drive failed 3 weeks ago and corrupted its data etc. I had the data backed up so no panic.
I decided to replaced it 3 weeks ago with a new 500GB WD IDE and reinstall 10.5 and migrate users for that drive.
Ever since I have been getting daily if not hourly kernel panics and issues with ALL drives on my system.
At one point the system loscked 4 drives and I could not access them at all.
Discussion group helped fix that issue.
I have managed to saved all my important data to a 500GB drive without a system on it and hopefully can deal with the issues at hand without worrying about the data.
Booted from my System 1.5 install disk and had a dark grey/ Must restart your mac screen while I was booting from the DVD!
Did an Apple Service diagnostics on the machine and all was great - no issues.
So I did a clean install on a drive and all looked great!
No other software installed except the system.
Rebooted OK.
I then did the apple software update and restarted.
No startup!
Rebooted with option key down - no drives??
I have been working on this for three days and seem to be going backwards at best.
I can boot sometimes and usually get a kernal panic eventually.
It can happen right away or an hour later.
Sometimes I get a message "your computer was shut down etc" sometimes I don't!?
Sometimes I get a startup chime - sometimes I don't!!??
What should I do next?
Advise whatever info you might need and I will do my best to provide it.I stripped my Mac down to barebones incluing original 80GB Drive 512 RAM and Original Video card and started over.
To make a long procedure shorter I found that all hardware was OK and after running ASD to confirm I reinstalled all my hardware/Add ins except for drives.
I then started to check each drive individually with Applejack and then formatting and reinstalling virgin systems on each drive.
Applejack and/or the system DVD would not fix and/or install on three of the Hard Drives (1 IDE 500GB and 2 500GB SATA)due to permission corruption. I could not do anything with these drives at all!
When I had these individual drives in the computer I experienced kernel panics with every one!
All the drives were under warranty and Western Digital replaced all of them. (I cannot begin to tell you how great Western Digital was in turnaround time and cross shipping and help in this matter.) Their warranty service is the best I have ever experienced bar none!
I am now running non stop for nearly a week without any kernel panic or problem whatsoever. I have also noticed a significant speed up in my computer.
I have rebooted many times and run non stop for days at a time.
I maintain my computer with maintenance scripts once per week and do it faithfully and this type of permission issue can still occur!
Without my backups there would have been a disaster for me.
Many thanks to all the peolpe that emailed help to me from all sources.
Sometimes out of the worst of situations good prevails. -
Hey everyone. I have an iPhone 4S that needs replacing due to obvious hardware issues (shuts down randomly on its own). I have shown the panic.plist reports that it generates on another forum and they have confirmed the kernel and hardware problem.
Since replacing it is the only way to go for me, I was wondering whether Apple still offers the option to upgrade to the next model when going to replace a phone with warranty. What I mean is, if I go to an Apple Store and ask to replace my handset for a new one (with my warranty/receipt) will I be offered to upgrade to an iPhone 5 for an additional fee? Can I ask for this option?
Thanks!FedeMJ wrote:

Apple has NEVER offered this as an option. -
put my PowerMac G4 away for awhile and just got it out to try finding resolution for previous kernel panics...did everything suggested in other forums - zapped PRAM; ran hardware test (everything okay); removed DIMMs one at a time; tried starting from OSX Leopard install disk; did a complete wipe & reinstall of OS (10.1.x) using original installation disks, but nothing has cured the kernel panic!
Problem began after replaced original hard drive (went bad) with a new one, but hardware test shows no problem with that or anything it tests for. Can't run disk utility or any other diagnostic apps because the computer won't even run - kernel panic immediately upon start-up.
does this mean a motherboard problem is the likely culprit?
any other ideas suggestions?
thanks for any help!

Pacman induces kernel panic (intermittent)
Hello Archers,
I've got a fresh Arch install. I'm working my way through syncing packages I want from pacman. Two times now, a call to "pacman -S" has resulted in a kernel panic requiring a hard reboot.
I've booted into my Arch CD - it was still sitting in the drive anyway - and recovered the kernel and pacman logs.

It seems to happen when pacman tries to use the network. The kernel log also seems to suggest a network problem.

I haven't had any kernel panics when using any other network programs, just pacman. I can ping google by name and I can scp to my laptop running on the WLAN.
I tried googling, using the wiki, and searching the forums, but all kernel-panic related problem seem to happen at boot time, not in the process of using pacman.
Some other things about my system that may or may not affect things: it's an LVM over LUKS over LVM, the lowest LVM sits across several hard-drives, and it's got an AMD64 processor but I installed off an i686 iso.
Does anyone have any ideas?I just generated another kernel panic while trying to sync fuse, openssh and sshfs from pacman.
I now notice something not captured by either the kernel log or the pacman log. Before the call trace begins, I also get this message:
:: Retrieving packages from extra...
[ 8340.507133] Kernel panic - not syncing: cannot create neighbour cache statistics
Still looking for ideas here. It's really weird that pacman can work properly for a while and then all of a sudden causes a kernel panic. -
My mac has started displaying a message stating "You need to restart your computer". Web says it's kind of kernel panic! Is this a hardware problem? Do i need to contact my distributor? please help..it annoys me very much..

Kernel panics will not stop! (wireless problem suspected)
I've seen a number of posts about this and am continuing to have this problem!
I have been to the Apple store 7 times in the last three days...here are the problems I've been having and what they've done. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
All of a sudden I started having Kernel Panic crashes (a least 5 a day.) Seemed to mostly happen when I was browsing (using Firefox.) Also I would usually experience an intermittent connection to the internet before a crash. (i.e. I would be browsing, then the connection would be lost...I'd turn off Airport...turn back on...then a few minutes later while browsing...crash)
Here is what I've done:
- At first we thought it was software...after two erase/install, that wasn't it.
- Maybe the new RAM from OWC...re-sat the RAM, took RAM out and replaced with factory RAM...had OWC send new RAM, that wasn't it.
- Maybe it is logic board, factory RAM, or Airport Extreme card...Apple replaced today...and THAT wasn't it.
- Got home after all these new parts and it crashed again while browsing wirelessly. So, I thought, "Could my Qwest wireless network be doing this!?!?!"
Have tried some different settings with Qwest and am awaiting another crash.
Does anyone have any idea what else I could try? (2 erase and installs, a new logic board, new RAM, new AE card, didn't do it!)
I so appreciate any help or advice. I'm in the middle of a couple of major projects and cannot bear to go back to the Apple store for an 8th time!
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.10) Refurb, rececently apple installed new logic board, new RAM, new AE cardSomeone back a few Topics pointed out that 10.4.10 on Battery, and some other factor would crash. AC no crash.
