Kernel panic - I know, but Why???

Ok, this is very weird.
My brother has a perfectly functioning 15" Powerbook G4. He had a CD that would not open automatically AT ALL, yet would open on a PC.
So I had a bright idea (not fully knowing the inner workings or consequences) to restart the computer with the CD in, holding down the "C" key, as you would if you were booting up with your installation disc.
Now we have that classic gray screen coming up saying "You must restart your computer" in English, French, German, and Japanese. I've read that it is a kernel panic, but can anyone tell me what did I do to cause it?
The kernel panic cleanup page did not work, and I'm currently in the process of erasing the hard drive and installing from scratch (backed up his data first).
Thank you so much for your time!

Thank you Shilo, and thanks all who read and were severely puzzled.
I must apologize.
I skipped the very first thing I should have done. A few months ago I ordered 3 - 1GB RAM chips from OMNI that caused our computers to act weird (my brother and I have the same computer). We each got 1G, and the other one was for another friend w/ a Powerbook. We took the RAM out and just used the factory chips, and I never gave my friend the other one. I took for granted that my brother had his Apple RAM installed and found out this morning that he had TWO of the OMNI chips installed, of course causing the kernel panic. We took them out, now everything works fine. <Sheepish grin>

  • I have kernel panic too! but for a different reason...

    hey all
my macbook has recently started experiencing kernel panic and i cant figure out why.
the first time it happened i used disk utility to verify the hard drive. DU said the hard drive needed to be repaired. i tried to boot up from the OSX 10.4 disk that came with my computer, but my computer wouldnt boot. so i booted up from disk warrior instead. i rebuilt the directory, ran the hardware check (no probs reported) and had DW check all files and folders. DW reported one corrupt .plist file. (i have looked at every single .plist file in the folder DW told me to but the corrupt file is nowhere to be found.) however, when i booted up normally and ran disk utility again DU said my hard drive was fine.
then kernel panic struck again. did a little research and found apple jack. ran all 5 of apple jack scripts and AJ also said all is well.
kernel panic again. used cleanapp to delete some old programs and empty caches. manually deleted about 80% of .plist files hoping that one of them would be the corrupt one. DW still reports one corrupt .plist file. so i decide to wipe the computer and do a clean install of 10.4. but when i try to open the OSX installer (from the disk that came with my computer) i get a message that says 10.4 cant be installed on this computer... that it isnt compatible. ***?
more research and this time decide on tech tools pro. run every test TTP has to offer and everything checks out fine.
so... now i dont know what to do. and my computer just had kernel panic again this morning. i pasted the report from it below. i dont know enough to tell if theres anything in there that explains whats wrong with my computer.
can anyone out there help me? in the very least can anyone tell me how to get my computer to recognize that it is compatible with 10.4 so i can erase everything and start again?
bah! this *****. thx in advance for any help you can give...

Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Kernel panic ??? Why is this happening

Does anyone in the world know why my Powerbook is crashing.
There is no pattern to the crashes they seem to be just random.

    Hello Daniel.
Interpreting a kernel panic log is not one of my strengths but check this link which includes information on the causes and a road map of troubleshooting steps to take in the order provided to resolve.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • Kernel Panic at boot but works in safe mode

I am getting a Kernel Panic at boot on the grey screen If I boot safe mode it works fine.
Whats the procedure to find whats cause the problem? Is there a log file I should look at or what is the best way to figure this out

Also check /System/Library/StartupItems & /Library/StartupItems (neither of which is in your home folder) -- any items in them are suspect since none are installed as part of a standard installation of the OS.

  • Trivial I know, but why no backspace key?

This my first Apple computer. So far I prefer to use the MacBook than my Dell desktop. One annoyance: WHY DID THEY DESIGN THIS WITHOUT A BACKSPACE KEY???
I would rid the x-tra "enter" and "apple logo"key in favor of a backspace.
Now you can get back to much more important issues!
    Alonso

Thanks to all for the replies. I just tested what you pointed out, it works. I still miss the good old backspace key though.
    Goodnight,
    Alonso

doesnt anyone have a little answer for me....

  • Unsolved Kernel Panic.

    Hi guys,
I have a problem on my macbook pro 2011 13" and this problem has bugged me for quite a long time. I've been using my MBP since June 2011 and it worked smoothly until December 2011, when I was working with Photoshop, and I got this kind of screen flicker (with blue, yellow, and black bar) and a warning box with different languages. I google'd to know what's happening with my MBP, and it seems my MBP has suffered from Kernel Panic.
I tried to fix it, bring it to apple authorized service centre and the problem seemed to go away. I thought my graphic card is defective, I guess I was wrong. I tried to play Limbo, and that kernel panic occured again, but this time kernel panic only occurs when I'm playing games. And the same kind of problem occured when I play games on windows 7, the screen distorted for short time, then it goes to BSOD state.
I tried to solve it by myself at this time, so I clean installed new OS, Snow Leopard (I used Lion before). Everything seems fine, but suddenly this problem occurs again! And I bumped into this website and I was wondering if one of you guys could identify from my latest Kernel Panic error log:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106805 Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts
"You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) message appears (Mac OS X v10.5, 10.6)
User Tip:  Kernel Panics? Don't panic too!
You are still under warranty.  Suggest that you call Apple Care & let them deal w/it.  Why should you?

  • Kernel panic in 10.8.2 solved (for me)

Thanks to the Apple Support crew who spent hours on the phone with me figuring this out. S, you are great!
    Background:
I have seven machines from Apple.  These range from Macbook Air to iMac to numerous others, all Intel-based.  Over a period of a month I began upgrading from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2, one machine at a time, and with days betweeen working on the next machine.  Each time I upgraded a machine I began experiencing kernel panics upon startup on the upgraded machine.  These kernel panics began the same day I did the upgrade, and often I'd have three kernel panics back-to-back before I was ever able to log in.
Apparent Cause of the kernel Panics:
I use the word "apparent" as not to lay blame.  Nevertheless, the common denominator on all the panic machines was the remote login software called LogMeIn (as far as I can tell).
    How to Stop the Panics:
I suggest doing this only if you can do without using logmein.  If you can't, you might want to move or rename files rather than delete them, or beat on the logmein support staff to hurry up and fix this apparent conflict.
LogMeIn has files and daemon processes all over the place.  Open a terminal window and change directory to /Library/Application Support/LogMeIn
The % sign is the command prompt in the following examples.  Don't type the % sign in your command.
"cd" is the command for changing directories, "ls" is the command for listing directory contents, and "pwd" is the command for identifying where you are in the file structure.
    cd like this:
    % cd /Library/Application\ Support/LogMeIn
Note the "\" backslash character above.  That lets terminal know you are entering a space between the words Application and Support.
You may have to do additional hunting, but find a file in the LogMeIn directory (or possibly a slightly differently named LogMeIn directory) called uninstall.sh  The file uninstall.sh is the LogMeIn uninstaller, and it will be in one of the logmein directories.
Run the LogMeIn uninstaller from inside the directory where it is located:
    %./uninstall.sh
The uninstaller doesn't seem to do much uninstalling, but it does stop a few daemon processes from being cranked up.  You've now killed most of the logmein daemon processes but not all of them.  You will also still have the round logmein icon up top on your command bar and the LogMeInGui application showing up in the startup list rolling through your console.
Go back to the finder, and look in Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plugins.  Find the logmein directory and delete it.
At this point, the kernel panics will stop, but you'll still have a few logmein daemons running and the icon will still be on your command bar up top.
Either spotlight "logmein" or search a few library directories for logmein subdirectories.  Delete them all.
    Search these:
MacintoshHD/Library/Application Support/ ... any logmein stuff in here
    MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchAgents/
    MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchDaemons/
Under your username you need to look in the Library directory.  If you haven't already created an alias for it so you can see it all the time, press the option key while you are in finder and already looking at the "Go" menu from up top.
In username/Library, look in these directories: (and do it for each username on you machine to be safe)
    /username/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    /username/Library/LaunchAgents/
To round out the extermination, you might want to do one final spotlight for anything logmein-related, and delete it.
For the record, I used logmein daily to connect to my office and to help administer remote machines.  I'll gladly return to using the software once this weird system killer has been fixed.  Other than the kernel panics it caused with 10.8.2, I found logmein to be some of the most user-friendly remote access software around. I was never fully comfortable with all the daemon processes, and as for security, it always gave me the creeps, but those are my own personal disorders....
I haven't had a kernel panic since, and I also no longer spend every waking hour of my time at home logged into my office machine.  Double whammy.

Nice work, thanks for the report, hopefully it'll help someone else!

In the journal I can't find anything useful - nothing but routine messages (at least right before panic)

Then it is, in all likelihood,  not a panic.  As a sanity check, does the Magic SysReq stuff work when the kernel has not gone off to la-la land?
Can you ping your box when this happens?  Can you perhaps log in via ssh when this happens?  Any chance your disk access LED's are lit when this happens?
BTW, I don't mean that the kernel is not fully locked up.  I am just saying that it is not a panic -- unless it is so hosed that it cannot even figure out how to twiddle those LEDs.

  • IMac kernel panics and freeze

My iMac is one year old and has worked fine but two days ago my iMac G5 (w/ iSight) started crashing and the kernel panic message comes up. So when I force restart I get to the log on screen and then the mouse freezes. Sometimes, I am able to log on but then about 5 minutes later the mouse will freeze again. This has been an endless cycle for these past two days. Luckily, I am using my iMac G4.
I tried resetting the PRAM and PMU, but it didn't work.
I tried installing the 10.4.9 combo but it didn't work either.
My computer doesn't fall under the repair extension program.
I don't know what the problem is :[

    Hi
I am not sure if this is where I should put this, but, looked up kernel panics - yours is the most recent one! I had one today, and had not had one for years...
So - here it goes - I'll copy and paste...
I haven’t had a kernel panic for years – but today I did.
    Here’s what happened:
On the internet at the school where I work. Just had Mail open – nothing else. Went to shut down, and the panic thing showed. I pushed and held restart, and it just shut down, and did not restart.
When I got home tonight, it started, said that OSX had quit unexpectedly – and I had the choice to report or not. I clicked report, but nothing happened. So I am posting this as suggested in Mac OS X: How to Log a Kernel Panic
    Thanks.

  • Lion, MPB, Kernel Panic, com.apple.driver.CoreStorage

    Greetings
I started to get Kernel Panics (2 today). I pasted in the last one.
The last one happened while Time Machine was running and Spotlight did indexing.
I cannot say for sure that this was the case when the first kernel panic was thrown but I presume it was.
CPU was pretty busy both times and the fans running full speed.
Anyone any thoughts on what's going on here?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Stefan

com.sophos.kext.sav - do you use some AV scanner?
if it is set up to block access to infected files and you have some of them somewhere in downloads or mail attachments - it can try to block spotlight and/or time machine access - thus probably causing deadlock in storage subsystem.
Do you know that for now the only malware for Mac is cured by mac os itself? (there was appropriate update)
all known to me Mac antivirus software scans for Windows viruses, which are of no harm to you.
Anyway, boot from DVD and repair HD
otherwise may be one of your's mounted media is dying - try to see smart status for it, espesially bad blocks remapped
trying to read from scratched DVD wery rarely can cause KP also

  • Intermittent kernel panics in Mountain Lion on iMac

    Hi, everyone!
I'm having intermittent kernel panics on my early 2009 iMac running Mountain Lion.
There's some kind of blink and the system immediately freezes and after a second or so Mac spontaneously restarts. Sometimes it happens when I simply surf the web, sometimes when I copy files (eg restoring backups from Time Machine). Twice it happend when the system was restarting after the freeze.
I didn't have any problems with Leopard that came with my computer. Kernel panics started with upgrade to Snow Leopard. I decided to give it a try and installed Mountain Lion.
Roughly at the time of upgrade to Snow Leopard I also upgraded my RAM from 4 to 8 GB.
    What I've done already:
I repaired disk and permissions on your Mac OS X startup disk.
I updated my system and all applications.
I tried to rule out incompatible third-party kernel extensions (although I'm not aware of any) with Safe Mode, but again had some kernel panics.
I ran the Apple Hardware Test from the disc that came with my Mac (AHT version 3A157, 3.3.1), with the Extended Test option checked, in Loop Mode.
Last time I did it, It made 7 loops with the Apple RAM with no issues.
I repeated the test with the new, third-party RAM (Corsair), it made several loops as well, no issues found.
But I remember when I tried for the first time to run the test (with the third-party RAM), it froze during the third loop.
I also ran Memtest-86 v4.1.0. The first time I tried it, it passed 3 loops with no errors.
A few days later I tried again and it hung during the second loop (no issues found in first loop).
I removed my external disc drive (Time Machine), UPS and scanner cables.
So apart from the mouse (Razer Orochi, I broke my Apple mouse) I don't have now any peripherals nor hardware additions.
Lastly I erased the internal drive and installed Mountain Lion.
My last kernel panic log bellow.
Please note: there are 'kaspersky' and 'virtualbox' parts in the kernel panic log below, but kernel panics were happenning without Kaspersky and VirtualBox installed.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

    Hi,
I've been busy lately and haven't had the chance to work on this particular computer.
When I finally tried it, I thought at first it helped to simply uninstall VB and Kaspersky – there were no kernel panics for about a day of work. It did puzzle me, though, why the crashes were occurring while in Safe Mode and not now.
But than again today I had a kernel panic while watching a short video online (Flash).
If I understood well Linc Davis comment, it means I have a faulty graphics adapter which means I have to replace the logic board.
Do you think I should try and find some third party tools to confirm that or look for a firmware patch? I don't want to spend weeks searching and wasting your and my time but maybe there's something else I didn't do or look for.
Thank you in advance for any advice.
My last kernel panic log below.

  • IMac G5 (iSight) kernel panics

I'm having continuous kernel panics with my iMac G5.
    I unplugged all external drives/accessories.
    I removed additional RAM.
    I zapped the PRAM.
I rebooted with different disks (all crash sooner or later -- often sooner).
I ran Techtool pro (in target more) - drive is OK.
( could not run Techtool Pro from its DVD )
I ran the Apple Hardware Test (v 2.5.3) and all (extended) tests passed.
I'm at a loss as to what to try next.

Can you boot from your install disc? If so, run Disk Utility:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
It may well be that your logic board is failing, although kernel panics are usually, but certainly not always, software problems. but see if you can start up in Single-User-Mode:
(Hold the cmd()+S when you hear the tone and release when you see the Apple logo) this will give you a black screen with text (command-line) wait till it finishes booting up and you have a command prompt(localhost:/root#) then type in (/sbin/fsck -fy) this verifies and repairs your startup drive. If it finishes and reports the hard drive has been modified---repeat the command-line entry as above.
Do that until it report the hard drive is OK. then type in (reboot).
Also see if you can boot in Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
    1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
    2. Press the power button.
    3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
    4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.
If the computer runs well during safe mode, then it is some software to blame, which is often the case for kernel panics. If it still panics, then hardware is to blame.

  • Multiple kernel panic errors after upgrading to snow leopard 10.6.8 on my MacBook Pro.

After upgrading to 10.6.8, I almost immediately began experiencing multiple random kernel panic errors.  I reinstalled the operating system that came with my notebook from the cd (10.6?) and the problem went away.  I upgraded again to 10.6.8 and again began experiencing the same error.  I have since gone back and installed the operating syatem from the cd and then upgraded to 10.6.7.  I have not had a single kernel panic error since, but I would like to upgrade to 10.6.8 so that I can install Lion when it is avaialable.  Any thoughts as to how I can do this without experiencing all of the accompanying kernel panic errors?

Thank you.  The log is below:

I got to the point that the computer would not start even after trying 10+ times successfully. I only managed to do it by booting up with a bootable CD or with my backup Firewire drive. I was unable to boot up with the Firewire drive when I selected it as a startup disk though. In any case, the kernel panics always occur at startup. I ran all kinds of diagnostics including Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro and Disk Utilities. All 3 always showed that my computer has no problems. Every test passed. I repaired permissions countless times, followed all different advices on how to deal with kernel panics, etc. I finally decided to erase my drive by zeroing and start from scratch. Before re-installing Tiger I ran diagnostics again to make sure nothing was wrong with the drive and the rest of my computer and all tests passed. I finally re-installed Tiger and to my frustration the problem continues even when all I have loaded in my computer is Tiger. I am able to startup without getting a kernel panic the first time after I have re-installed Tiger (have done it 3-4 times in the last week or so) but then on a second trial I get back to the same situation. I forgot to mention that I got the panics even while re-installing Tiger and while running Techtool Pro. I had to perform hard startups several times before I was able to complete the tests and re-install Tiger. In most cases whenever I get the kernel panics if I don't do a hard startup my diks accelerates very rapidly and gets the fans running at full and very noisy speed. Throughout this whole deal all the diagnostics tools have been unable to identify the problem. Do I need to trash my computer? As far as I am concerned I have tried everything I can think of for the last 3 months to no avail. The situation kept deteriorating with time so it sounds like a hardware problem and as if one of the internal parts is just dying a slow death. Any words of wisdom will do. I have owned close to 7 Macs over the years (this one is about 2 years old) and this is the first time I have felt like trashing one. Please Help!!

    Hello!
I had the same problem once - it was the Ram, but Hardware Test didn´t get it. It just said everythings ok - So for testing if the Ram is ok, I put out all the Ram that was in and always tried 2 slices at one time. Well it works fine to check when you have more than 2 slices of Ram, but if not maybe you´ve got friends to borrow some working Ram from them. After I´ve tried that I found out that there were 2 slices out of 6 damaged. After replacing the damaged no Kernell Panics again.
But I hope you have a less costs problem!
    Yours,
    Jörg
