Kernel Panic iMac with External HD
Hi guys,
I bought a couple of weeks ago, the new Lacie Porche Design 3T USB3 for my iMac 2012.
This is the model: https://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10587
Since then, I've been experiencing few "Kernel Panic" (5-6 times), all crashes seems to happen when I have file linked into the external HD.
Like for example, my iTunes library: sometimes, listening to music or doing a search, will crash the Mac. Or like when I'm editing my pictures with Aperture (they are linked into my Aperture library from the LAcie HD).
Does anyone has the same issue? Or know a possible solution?
I know it's related to Hardware when Macs crashe... (I've been 10+ Mac user and it did happen before).
Attached the crash report.
Thanks!

@grapunzel did you resolve this? I have had two kernel panics like this in the last week.
I have a USB hub connected (has been connected long before these started) and that has a USB pen drive + a USB HDD (Seagate 2Tb) which is partitioned for Data + TimeMachine...

Kernel panics on LaCie external drive with Mac Mini
Hi there.
I recently purchased a LaCie external drive to use with my Mini. My intent was to boot from the LaCie drive and use the Mini for backup. Everything was working well until I upgraded the LaCie drive to 10.4.6. I started to get a kernel panic once a day. I reinstalled the OS (I have disks up to the 10.4) but held off doing software upgrades so I could try to isolate the cause of the kernel panic. I couldn't. I currently get the panic notice every few minutes, regardless of the version.
I am planning on taking both drives to the Mac store on Monday, but am wondering what my options are. Is it okay to use the LaCie drive as my start-up or should I get a bigger drive installed in the Mini and use the Mini as my start-up instead?
Is there any chance I can solve this kernel panic problem on my own? Reinstalling, running disk utilities, etc hasn't helped.
Thanks for any insight you can provide.
Barb
Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.6) 40 gig Mini plus 250 gig LaCie externalok first off how big of external drive
the reason i ask is this
on some external inclosures designed for the mac mini exceed 120 gig to 220 gigs you will have some major issues one is kernal panic one is the mac os x desktop becomes unstable and certain applications will crash like utilitys and even system preferences
and your dvd software will also have trouble playing dvds
i ran into this on a g3 tower and the same thing happens on certain models of laptops but i have never heard of this happening on a mac mini this is a first -
Stuck with kernel panic, iMac reboots constantly
A couple of days ago I got a kernel panic when I tried to switch on my iMac, i.e. I got this screen: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
I rebooted, got the same message again before I could do much.
There was a stuck DVD, so I could not even try to boot from DVD and run a hardware check.
I searched online, and somebody had written that this problem was fixed after changing a keyboard. I tried that, and it booted OK, was able to eject the disk, and THEN I got a kernel panic message. I rebooted and was able to work a bit, make a time machine backup, etc.
Yesterday the kernel panic appeared again. I inserted the MacOS Install disk 1, to make a hardware check, but after rebooting, the machine cycled rebooting and rebooting and rebooting.
Sometimes I got a kernel panic message, but not in most cases. It seems that the problem lies before I can choose the boot mode, since I cannot do it from disk, target mode, eject disk, etc...
Today I booted without keyboard-mouse connected, and it was OK. Soon after I connected the (new) keyboard & mouse, I got a kernel panic. After rebooting it was same story: it reboots automatically every 10 seconds or so...
I also tried resetting the PRAM (last resort from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2238 ), and it seems to me that the boot sound is louder, but keeps on rebooting the same...
I just have one RAM chip that came with the computer, so it's not some RAM incompatibility...
Any ideas?
Even if there is a way of ejecting the disk, that might help, I could try to restore the system a few days back with time machine, or run some updates, in case it is a software problem... Otherwise it seems it is a hardware problem...Can you boot from the restore disk and use the Disk Utility app to check the disk for errors?
Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your restore disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities > Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
Resolving Kernel Panics
Try ejecting the disk by booting while holding down the mouse, or, boot while holding the Eject key on the keyboard.

Having Problems with Kernel Panics and an External Hard Drive
I've been having Kernel Panics for a month now and have yet to resolve the issue. I know about Dr. Smokes guide to resolving them, but I'm working on a time-sensitive editing project in Final Cut Pro and therefore have not had time to fix my computer.
I am using an OWC external hard drive for the project, and today when I had a kernel panic and I rebooted my computer as I normally do. But, this time, my external hard drive icon was not on my desktop, and a message popped up that said, "The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer." Is there anyway to remedy this so that my computer reads my hard drive?Have you tried using Disk Utility to repair your ext. hard drive as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption?
Cheers!

Frequent Kernel Panics - iMac G4/800
My mom's had an iMac G4/800 for about five years now... it's always be a good and reliable machine... all of a sudden, she's been plagued with kernel panics occuring several times a day...
She's tried several clean OS X installs to no avail... last night, I did a zero-write to the drive and erased it (i believe this would lock out bad sectors, no?)... she's not installed anything as of yet but just had another KP about 20 minutes ago...
I took a log at the panic.log and found the following... granted, I don't really know how to read this but it seems that it has something to do with the graphics card?

Kernel Panic - iMac 2008 (Intel) - Next Step?
Hello,
My mother's iMac has gone south with a Kernel Panic. I have tried:
PRAM reset
PMU reset
Booting from external drive with clean OS
Hardware test (extended) found no errors
Still Kernel Panic.
Is there anything else that can be tried except bringing it to a service center?
It is out of warranty and the closest Apple store is a bit of a drive.
ThanksKernel panics can be cause by either faulty hardware +(generally RAM)+ or by incompatible software.

[SOLVED] Kernel panic when using external USB hard drive
I have a desktop PC with a 64 bit arch install, on a Core2 Duo 6320 CPU. I have been using (and continue using right now) a 500 GB "Iomega Desktop Hard Drive" external USB hard disk without problems. But I have just bought a 3 TB "Seagate Expansion" external USB hard drive and I'm unable to use it from my Arch install. Each time I try to format it or to copy data from the PC, Arch freezes with a kernel panic. Sometimes it freezes faster and I cannot see anything, but others I am able to see the following kernel messages, repeating several times:
[11701.205071] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdf] uas_eh_abort_handler ffff880014e13380 tag 29, inflight: CMD

[11704.483206] scsi host3: uas_eh_bus_reset_handler success
Strange enough, the drive is listed by lsusb command as a 2TB but I don't think this is related to the problem (as the OS sees the 3 TB). This is the lsusb output:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bc2:3312 Seagate RSS LLC SRD00F2 [Expansion Desktop Drive 2TB]
I have tried the drive on other PCs and it works flawlessly. Also tried booting Windows 8 on the same PC I have Arch installed in, and in Windows it also works perfect. I have tried using ext2 and NTFS filesystems. Tried also changing the USB cable without success. And right now I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Kingston does make such RAM, but you have to ask them which RAM is specified for it. Do not buy ValueRAM.
http://www.macsales.com/ has been the most reliable third party RAM vendor. Recently Crucial while good has had a few questionable issues which I'm still trying to figure out why. Generally if you buy the RAM that says it is for your specific age of machine and model machine, you are good with lifetime warranty RAM. -
Kernel Panic - imac rebooting please help?
Hello
My 2009 iMac continues to reboot due to kernel panic during the past couple of week. It happes several times a day. I cannot find any specific cause and it seems to happen randomly. That is even when the computer is on standby. I hvae searched the web, but cannot find a solution. The problem is getting worse.
I have tried apple hardware test that detected no problems. I have upgraded the imac last yaer with a Samsung SSD and its running 6 gb ram. It has worked flawless until now. Should I consider buying a new Imac?
Here is the log:

Failure to start + Kernel Panic iMac 6,1 10.6.8
I am repairing a friends iMac 6,1 24" (Late 2006?). It fails to boot, displaying a white screen after finishing with the apple logo/spinning logo page.
I cannot boot into the recovery tools on the original OS X Tiger disks because it freezes at the apple logo screen.
I have access to the Apple System Diagnostic (a friend of mine who works in IT for the local school district provided me with it, unfortunately he knows less about Macs than I do since the district uses mainly PCs).
I tried to boot from the ASD into repeated kernel panics. It seems obvious to me that the panics are graphics related, which I suspected, but I want to verify with the more experienced users here that this is indeed the cause before I spend time ordering the part and dealing with the nuisance of digging into this case. I pulled the logs using targeted disk mode.
I'm fairly sure there is a hardware problem but diagnosing the hardware problem is my concern. It appears there is an issue communicating with the video card, whether that is an issue with the card, an issue with the PCI I/O on the logic board or a firmware issue is the real question (as it seems to display fine, I don't get any artifacts or anything when on the apple boot screen or when the targeted boot mode firewire logo is bouncing around the screen).
Advice/experience would be greatly appreciated.

What you posted is a truncated log. What usually follows the dependencies is information on installed extensions that may sometimes provide insight into the cause of the panic. Your log doesn't even show in what software the panic was generated. I couldn't tell you anything worthwhile from the portion that you posted. Of course it may be truncated because the computer hard-crashed at the moment the log was being written, so it is incomplete. But if that is happening regularly, like I suggested earlier, then most likely there is a hardware failure. The apparent type of panic was a page fault error which may suggest memory failure. Try swapping in some known good memory. -

It won't hurt to do this and may reset whatever is causing the problem. Of course, if it's a font or software issue it will have no effect.

Hello and thanks for taking the time to read this.
I am suffering kernel panic. I leave my iMac 17 inch Intel on all day, I come home, I have the black screen and the light on constantly and bright in the bottom right hand corner. However, when I jiggle the mouse or hit a key, nothing happens. So, I turn it off, it comes up with a you shut down unexpectedly and sometimes it says it want to shut down again (the multi0-lingual dialogue box). For some reason, it appears to be an afternoon issue. I can leave it on all night with no problem but if I leave it on all day it seems to occur late afternoon. Sometimes, I don't get the afternoon black screen but after working on it for ten minutes the dreaded black box and message comes up again and I have to reboot - sometimes twice.
Mac support in Australia has been patient and good and taken me through all of the resets. I am trying one last thing and that is creating a new user account and leaving it on all day to see if it is a software problem in my account.
However, I would be interested in any views that anyone has.
Thanks,
Andrew

That's very serious.
They are Kernel Panics, which you will read about in the Xlab's link.
You need to address these ASAP.
IMHO, the usual culprits are peripherals or bad RAM.
It could be software, but more likely not.
Do follow the link Steve has given you
and run through all the steps. -
Kernel panic when using external hard drive for library
I have been using an external hard drive to manage my iTunes library for over a year. As of today, I have had three kernel panics when trying to use iTunes. I was downloading a purchase from the music store and the first panic occurred. Subsequent panics occurred immediately on startup of iTunes. Using the guest account (with default internal drive library settings), everything works fine. Both drives have been verified by Disk Utility and all software is up-to-date. No clue how to proceed.
Yes, but you need to have the external drive on and mounted when starting iTunes. You can add the external HD to your log in items list in System Preferences -> Accounts to handle this.
This explains how to move your files: iTunes for Mac-Moving your iTunes music folder: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
