Kernel Panic Immediately After Full Time Machine Backup

Hi, after I reinstalled my OS from a previous Time Machine backup, I've been getting a kernel panick:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff80005418bf): "Process 1 exec of /sbom/launchd failed. errno 88"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1699.32.7/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c:3546
Here's my specs:
- OS: Went from Leopard 10.5.8 to Lion 10.7.5. (Reinstalled OS X from default installation disc then reinstalled OS X from a 10.7.5 backup; Was having trouble booting with 10.5.8)
- Hard Drive: 2008 Intel Core Duo
- RAM: 4GB installed
Any ideas? I've already tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM. It occured right after I installed the Time Machine backup, when it tells you to restart your computer. I was having previous boot problems where my Mac just wouldn't boot, that's why I reverted to 10.5.8. That was working perfectly fine, until I restarted... Then the never ending gray startup screen popped up again.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That's usually overkill.  Just installing a fresh version of Lion (or upgrading to Mountain Lion), without disturbing anything else, will fix 99% of problems with OSX.
- Tried to restore my documents manually but got a lot of rights-issues,
The user account you set up wasn't recognized as being the same one as on the backups.  It's a slightly different cause, but see the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
- Tried to restore my TM backup by booting from Mountain lion 10.8 bootable disk, trying to restore to 10.7.5.
Do you mean an InstallESD.dmg?  If so, that should work, but I don't recall if I've done it lately, and that may have updated your Recovery HD to the Mountain Lion version.  Do you have a Lion version you can use instead?  If you do, erase the whole disk (not just the OSX partition), then restore the Lion backup.
Does your Recovery HD work?  If so, that's the easiest -- just start up from it and do the Restore.
If not, and your Mac came with Lion, you should be able to erase the entire disk and use Internet Recovery to do the restore (or download and install a fresh copy of Lion), then use Setup Assistant to transfer your stuff.

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Hi, if I understand correctly yes, but may I ask the purpose of doing so?

  • Kernel panic immediately after connecting Android via USB

    Hi!
I am getting a kernel panic immediately after I connect my Android phone via MTP. It wasn't happening before (on pre-Yosemite version).
It may be relevant to know that I installed Samsung Kies before, which installs it's kernel modules, but I removed both modules and software itself since then.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Macbook Pro will not boot after full time machine restore

I have a 15-inch Macbook Pro, current model with the i7 processor, which I purchased in August 2010. Last week, when I tried to turn it on, it would not boot (just got to the gray screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel). I took it in for repair and was told that it had a bad hard drive. The hard drive was replaced and I got the computer back yesterday.
Everything looked good, it turned on, so I did a complete restore from my Time Machine backup on my Time Capsule, following the instructions on this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15638.html
The restore was successful and the computer prompted me to restart. I clicked the button to allow the restart and now I am back to the gray screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel. It won't boot again.
I also looked at this discussion (http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10924233) and it sounds like the person here was able to get his computer to work after doing the Time Machine restore in the same process I used, so I don't know what else to do.
I don't live near an Apple store, so it would be great if I could figure this out myself. Thanks for any help!

  • Can I still use my "old" Mac after restoring Time Machine backup to a new Mac?

    Hi guys.
Will I still be able to use my old Macbook Pro 2008 (Leopard) after restoring his latest Time Machine backup on a new Macbook Pro 2012 (Lion)?
Using Setup Assistant and transfering data using Time Machine creats the same Account on the new machine that was on the old one. I just don't know how the old machine will react towards his clone. I don't want to make a mess...
    Please let me know.
    Thanks

It should work if the drive is connected directly to your Mac. That is not the same as saying that it will work.
Since Mountain Lion was just released, it might make sense to hold on a few weeks and watch the forums for new and unforeseen issues before you dive in.

  • Restoring full Time Machine backup of a drive--from the same drive

Apparently, I somehow got a full backup of my boot drive on the drive itself.  At least, when I boot up from the Snow Leopard install disc and go to restore from a time machine backup, it shows that I have backups on the same drive.  I'm not sure how this happened; it might have been generated when I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, or I might have specified the wrong target when performing a backup.  Anyway, my file system went belly-up, so I'm wondering:  Can I actually restore this backup even though the backup is located on the same drive?
Difficulty:  So far as I can tell, the backup is not on a separate partition unless this is somehow hidden to me.  It's on the same partition that I boot from.

    Shouldn't be any problem.
Boot from your SL installer DVD (hold down the C key on startup or hold down Alt/option on start and choose the installer disc).
OK the language page (if present). From the installer screen, go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility; depending on the OS version it may be in the Utilities menu or Tools menu.
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.). Run Repair Disk. If that comes up as disk OK, click the partition tab. Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need. Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for G5 and earlier) and the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
When that's finished, select the new volume in the sidebar (indented to the right below the drive) and go to the Erase tab, select Security options and select zero data (one pass is more than sufficient). Click erase. That will take quite some time; probably measured in hours and dependant on the size of the drive.
When that's completed, close DU and continue with the installation.
Shortly into the installation process, you'll be asked if you want to migrate data from another source. Select 'from a Time Machine Backup' and follow the prompts.
    See Pondini's FAQs;
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/19.html
    http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/SetupAsst.html
That should leave you with the same setup as you had on the previous MB.

  • After restoring Time Machine Backup Recovery HD is missing...

    Hi,
I startet with CMD + R intro Recovery HD, restored using my Time Machine Backup and now my Recovery HD is missing.
I do know that Time Machine doesn't back up the Recovery HD, but I did not think that a restore would delete anything more than the previous Macintosh HD, before it is beeing restored.
Apple needs to fix this. After any restore "Find my Mac" is useless without an existing Recovery HD.
    Anyone can confirm this?

Yes, unfortunately, the Recovery HD doesn't get restored.  That's been requested, but hasn't happened yet, obviously.
You have to reinstall Mountain Lion (that won't disturb anything else).  If you saved the installer, just run it again.  If not, and if your backups are on an external HD, there should be a copy of it there you can use to get a fresh copy of OSX and install it.  See the green box in Using the Recovery HD.
Or, the CarbonCopyCloner app has a "disk center" that I believe can create one.  I use CCC, but haven't done that myself, but have seen a number of posts saying it does work.

  • "Permission denied" on sparsebundle after first Time Machine backup

I've been using an encrypted sparsebundle for several months. Yesterday I bought a new Apple Airport Time Capsule, and created my first Time Machine backup. Today when I double-click the sparsebundle, instead of being prompted to enter my password, I receive a Warning dialog box saying "The following disk images couldn't be opened" with the sparsebundle listed next to "Permission denied." According to Get Info, my account does have Read & Write access to the sparsebundle.
How can I get access to my 4.5 GB of encrypted data?

Thanks for the response. In my case, when I booted into my cloned backup and ran from that, I was able to open the sparsebundle normally. Then when I returned to my original system, it too worked normally. Although I'm relieved I didn't lose my data, it's all very mystifying. It particularly concerns me that no online source seems to be able to explain the nature of the error message I received!
I did repair permissions before posting here, to no avail.
So that terminal command will turn your encrypted sparsebundle into an unencrypted sparsebundle, without prompting for the password? That's alarming.

  • Error after every Time Machine backup

Each time I back up to my Time Machine, I get an error in Console.app concerning the mds process:
12:13:16 AM mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume
Does anyone know what that means? It most likely has to do with Spotlight and Time Machine since it comes up every time a backup is made.

I also see the "mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume" message in Console. As others have noted, mds is related to Spotlight, but this error only occurs during a Time Machine backup. I'm backing up to a Concatenated Raid Set of two external USB drives (yes, I know there's a greater risk of losing data, but this is only for a backup not the original, so I think the risk is acceptable).
But the presence of a message clearly stating "Error" suggests something is wrong, but nobody seems to know what this means, that I can find. Hopefully staff from Apple come across this thread, but I'm also going to report it in their Feedback form.

  • Kernel Panic, Restored System Using Time Machine but Problems Still  Persis

SOS! Please, please, please help. I'm at a loss here. I have an 300 GB iMac with a 32 GB partition for Windows. I backup to an Iomega UltraMax 500 GB external hard drive. Let me know if more info is needed. I went through the checklists to resolve a kernel panic, and nothing has been working. Here's the background:
I recently encountered a kernel panic (I saw the screen discussed in the "What is a kernel panic?" article). It started when Firefox 3.2 beta was running. It froze and eventually the system froze. I repaired disk permissions, and I was able to boot up, but it took awhile to boot up. Some things weren't right once it was booted; I lost some keyboard functionality, system settings (screen saver, display settings, etc), etc. I attempted to repair the disk (using disk utility while booted from leopard install disc), but it failed (generated an error, said it couldn't repair disk). So I did the next thing and restored the system from Time Machine. Things seemed to be alright.
And about a couple days later, Time Machine starting encountering errors and failed to backup (it failed while attempting to backup 300 MB). The system also started to get slower, and it eventually froze. So I restored again from Time Machine. Seemed to be alright, but again it eventually slowed and started freezing.
I can't retrieve the panic log. I think it was erased with one of my system restores. I went into Time Machine to look for it, and it's nowhere to be found.
So, I tried to repair my disk permissions. That succeeded. But the disk repair failed again. I restored again from Time Machine. Same thing: things seem okay, but Time Machine isn't able to back-up (it's pretty much non-responsive, even after I told it to stop, it just says "stopping"), things are a bit slow and some applications are unstable (Firefox crashed for no apparent reason). I just found this under /Library/Logs/Crash Reporter:

Windows XP ran fine from my other partition at this point. I'm wondering if my Windows partition has something to do with it (I chose FAT32 instead of NTFS file system)?
Please help. Will erasing the drive, reinstalling from the leopard disc (10.5.4), and restoring select applications/folders/files help, instead of from a system restore from Time Machine?
    Your help is immensely appreciated!

    Thanks for responding.
So under the partition tab, I should reformat to one partition, reinstall Leopard, and see what happens from there? Selectively restore applications, music, pictures to my system once it's reinstalled and properly updated? Anything else I may need to do or restore?
Why not reformat under the erase tab, zero out the disk, and reinstall? Any difference?
Just a little worried and unsure is all. If it's a hardware thing, I can accept that and take it in to be serviced. But, if it is a software issue, I don't want to do any irreparable harm during the erase-and-reinstall process. Just want to make sure I get it right.

  • How does one find Mac Mail mailbox in full Time Machine Backup?

I completed full backup of my MacBook on 9/24. I use a directly connected G Drive. I need to restore my mailbox from that backup, but it doesn't show up when I attempt to use Time Machine to do so. How can I find the mail box through Finder on the G Drive?
    Thanks,
    Chris Reid

Further to this issue: I go into the finder and locate my mailbox in Library. When I go to back up 'Library' it goes back to the date in question - but there is no Library found?! There really must be a problem with the backup process. Any thoughts? I really need to find these emails!
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Force a Full Time Machine Backup to a Network Server

I don't have enough points to make a user tip. so I thought I'd share this way
Force Time Machine to take a full backup when the backup disk is on a network server (OS X 10.9)
This works for me because my Time Machine backs up to my NAS. I have not tried this with any other kind of backup disk. It assumes that you have already had Time Machine set up properly and working, that for whatever reason, you would like a full backup of the mac at this point in time. WARNING: Before proceeding, make sure that you have a full backup on a USB stick just in case and real all of the steps!
Connect to the server (hereafter called “server”) and open a finder window to show the sparse bundle.
Rename the sparse bundle from “(your computer’s name).sparsebundle" to “(your computer’s name).sparsebundle.old”. You will get the usual   warning message about changing the file type (extension) but make sure to change it.
Open Time Machine Preferences so you can see what is happening and then do “Backup Now”
You will se the status “looking for backup disk” for a minute or two and then this message:
Choose “Use This Disk”. (Note: If you choose “Don’t Back Up” at this point it stops and you will see in TM preferences that it thinks it has never taken a backup.)
A new “(your computer’s name).sparsebundle” is created and a full backup is performed. Note: If your NAS is not TM-compatible, you probably had to create your own sparse bundle manually in the first place. In that case you will need to do that again, using the technique you used originally. Then you will see this message:
If you are still watching the sparse bundle in the finder window, it may not show the proper size for quite a while (over 10 minutes in my case).
I have tested this with a complete restore, but again heed my warning at the beginning

  • After first time machine backup half available GB on computer are gone

I did my first backup up to an external HD using Time Machine.  Pre backup my computer showed 713 GB available. After backup my computer showed 334 GB available (less than half pre-backup!) and the external HD showed 713 GB available.  What happened?  Is this normal?

I called Apple Tech support. For anyone interested, here's the explanation I got:
In time machine, when you look at finder windows back in time the "GB available" shows the available space on the external HD, not the Mac HD (even though Mac HD is selected under devices).  The "now" window shows the GB available on the Mac.
In my case: Mac HD info shows a 595 GB capacity; I use 228 GB so I have 367 GB available.  My external HD is 1 TB or about 1,000 GB.  Backing up 228 GB on the external HD should leave about 772 GB available on the external HD.
In Time Machine all past finder windows show a number close to 772 GB available (currently available on the external HD) while "now" window shows 367 GB available (currently available on the Mac HD).
I was worried the backing up somehow changed the available GB on the Mac drastically from 772 to 367 but the Mac never had that much space available in the first place. Backing up has no effect on GB available on the Mac HD no matter how it may appear in Time Machine.
If anyone disagrees with this, please let us know. Thanks to everyone for their input.
