Kernel Panic in a fresh install (OracleVM 2.2.1)

Unfortunately we are hitting a known bug in a fresh OracleVM installation (2.2.1) on a HP Laptop dv7-4080 with virtualization enable by BIOS. Somebody knows if Oracle will be update this old kernel in the short time to fix first boot issues, I mean more newer kernels than 2.6.18-128. I know I can update but its really frustating to have a problem in first boot.

Oh yes, wrong Install Disc will/can do that, many are machine specific, & for the Retail versions must be later than the Macs release date.
If you don't know the exact model, find the Serial# & use it on one of these sites, but don't post the Serial# here...

  • Kernel Panic only after I install 16GiB RAM but it passed memtest and AHT

Kernel Panics occur after I installed the 16GiB RAM(Corsair Vengeance Laptop Memory Kit 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL10 PC3 12800 (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10) in my MacBook Pro 17" 2011 early. It might appear in login window, or after using Safari for 2 or 3 hours. If I did't use the MBP overnight and just let it run, there would be strong possibility that kernel panic didn't occur. But on the next day when I went up and start using the computer, the kernel panic occur in half an hour.
I run the memtest for 12+ hours and Apple Hardware Test for 19+ hours, but no error was found. I tried OS X Lion 10.7.4 and OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 GM, and even a clean install of 10.7.4, but it still occur.
However, when I install one of the 16GiB a.k.a 8GiB, kernel panic never occur. I even tried one 8GiB with another my old 4GiB ram, and kernel panic didn't occur either.
I've tried to fix the problems for 2 weeks, and I did everything I can. So, can anyone tell me which part might be bad, Mac or RAM? Should I goto Genius Bar or ask Corsair for RMA?

    Thank you for your reply.
My 8GiB RAM is also two 4GiB DDR3 1600MHz (SAMSUNG) and it was running very well.
I also checked the intel documents (http://ark.intel.com/products/50067/Intel-Core-i7-2720QM-Processor-(6M-Cache-up- to-3_30-GHz), and it says:
    Memory Types
    DDR3-1066/1333/1600
If you have read my original reply to you post, I did mention that someimes it will work and sometimes it won't.  Your Samsung might be rated at 1600MHz but the CL could be higher than your Corsair which is why it worked.
The memory Type you read in the link you provided is motherboard/logicboard depended.  Your Logic board is rated at 1333MHz.  So going 1600MHz will not benefit you since you're locked at 1333MHz.
    good luck

  • Mac Pro Kernel Panic while booted on install disk

I have a Mac Pro with 1 year and 2 weeks on the clock. No Apple Care.
Started getting intermittent Kernel Panics about 2 weeks ago, which are becoming a real problem now. Happening every time I use the machine.
I’m running 10.6.4 and just have the original ram etc.
Having searched here for related topics, I have been trying to troubleshoot the situation.
Was looking at recent software installs or likely culprits...
Ran the normal Apple Hardware Test and passed ok.
Ran an extended test and got this error: "4HDD/11/40000004:SATA(4,0)
Repaired all internal disks as far as possible, while started up on the installation disk, and when finished I got another Kernel Panic, while still running on the disk.
Can someone confirm if this means the issue if definitely hardware rather than software?
If so is it possible to tell which hard drive is at fault - ie. which Bay number corresponds to the SATA error above, if it is the hard drives at fault?
Need to get this fixed asap, so if anyone has any thoughts on how I should best proceed, that would be really appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi experiencing simular issues
Initially I thought the error was related to too many different things on the machine, but have since done a clean install to 10.6 with FCP and CS4 only and the and the errors continue.
6 error-reporting banks referred to 6 of the ram chips, but i see that your report
states 9, ( you don't have 9 ram slots do you?)
Upgraded this of a volume disc so I don't have the hardware diagnostic for this machine on a disc, and would have to go back to the tiger hardware diagnostics which should not make a difference but I see on forums people claiming this is an error only with leopard and that their systems were fine under tiger. The ram has a life time warrantee (non apple) but I need to get it to fail a test other than this apple problem report.
The machine crashes are not software specific, I was hand writing with just a browser open and it requested that I would have to restart the machine. If would be easier to test any solution I I know that combo would crash the machine other than time.
    I expect the next steps
    are to reseat the ram
    reset the p-ram
    Regards
    Colm

    A!

It's probably a logic board or connection issue.

  • MAC kernel panic after Mountain Lion install

Mac Kernel Panic has now started on my tower after i installed Moountain Lion.
I could not live with it and run my business so i had to get a new machine.
The tempertures are running the same on the new machine so it is NOT the temperture.
Apple support tried replacing one of my Nvita graphics cards to no avail.
Now they want to replace the second one.
    Really??
    What do you think???

Disconnect all external devices besides Apple keyboard and mouse, then see what happens.
If you don't get any kernel panics, then try connecting devices one at a time and test for a few days or until you get another KP.
I just read another post which stated there were several threads listing problems with the dual GT 120 cards and Mountain Lion. So, you might search out those if it doesn't turn out to be one of the attached devices.

  • Kernel panic: Snow Leopard erase & install

Continuous kernel panics when trying to erase and install Snow Leopard on my Mini. I tried it via disk and also a flash drive, but both ways end with kernel panic. Any ideas how to get past this?

I can only tell you what I would infer from what you have reported which is a kernel panic when booting from an installer disc. This being the case then the computer is not functioning fine. Hardware can fail at any time. When it does then, yes, one moment it's working then the next moment it's not.
If you've reported information that isn't correct or stated it in a way that's easy to misinterpret, then please expand on the situation. Are your installers good - do they work on another computer? Do the installers have a version of OS X that's compatible with the computer? For example, if the computer came with 10.6.3 installed when it was new, then you cannot boot it with a previous version of OS X.

  • Kernel Panic When Booting with Install DVD

I get a kernel panic when booting from the OSX 4 (tiger) install DVD. I am using a Quad G-5 with 8 gigs of ram.

Have to ask what version your Quad came with, whether same DVD you are using now. Apple now has Tiger DVDs w/ 10.4.6 for sale.
When booting, or when you get to the screen to select Languages on the initial screen (before you can select DU or Installer etc)?
How about Option booting to Apple Hardware Test and running extended test?
Did you run memtest or anything when you installed RAM (assuming you didn't buy it BTO w/ 8GB).
Any time adding or changing hardware, including memory, it is either a good policy or essential in some cases to boot into Open Firmware (command option of) on startup and type "reset-nvram" and 'reset-all" after installing. Same for PCIe or even swapping out disk drive (where sometimes a drive won't show up or allow you to partition).

  • Random Kernel Panics even after Clean Install from Genius Bar

Despite being "all apple" I'm about fed up with these kernel panics and ready to convert!
I believe these started with Lion... I'm now fully updated on Maverick.
    Nothing has seemed to change.
I took my iMac to the Genius Bar after I finally figured out a way to replicate a panic.
After all sorts of memory, and other hardware tests they suggested and performed a clean sweep.
I came home, restored with Time Machine, and thought all was well...
Now, a week later I'm back to having restarts in the middle of extensive projects.
I've had two in the past two hours.
I initially diagnosed it as anytime a large file (2GB+) was being moved, saved, or when a back up or virus scan was being performed.
Then it happened at other times and proved that wrong.
Then I assumed it was RAM. I took it out, cleaned, and performed multiple tests. All was good and up.
Then I could reproduce it while working with a LARGE file in iMovie.
Thats when I took it to the Bar.
Now, I'm long out of iMovie and working mainly in Google Chrome with nothing else opened, but Evernote, and FileZilla, which I have used for years.
The last two panics have included the :  0xdeadbeefdaadbeef
Could it be the grapics drivers? Using
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400
      Type:          GPU
      Bus:          PCI
      VRAM (Total):          256 MB
      Vendor:          NVIDIA (0x10de)
      Device ID:          0x0869
      Revision ID:          0x00b1
      ROM Revision:          3454
    Any Help?
I can post the panics if needed...

Here's the EtreCheck... looks like I have a lot more 3rd Party stuff than I realized...? Probably some of the problem?

  • Kernel Panic Once Every Fresh Boot, Then Boots Fine

My Macbook Pro has taken to kernel panicking once before it will boot up fine.  Seems to happen almost everytime I shutdown, and reboot.  Then once I power off manually, and restart again, it boots up fine.  I do have 6GB of RAM in it, which I believe isn't officially supported, but it has worked just fine for over a year in that configuration, until recently.  Below is the panic log.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Kernel Panic when booting from Install Disk

My problem started when I was scanning my hard drive for problems with the Disk Utility.
It notified me that I do have some issues that could be resolved by restarting my computer with the Snow Leopard Installation Disk and running the DIsk Utility from there.
I tried to do that and it starts to boot up from the DVD but after about 30 seconds I get the Kernel Panic messege (You Need To Restart Your Computer...) in various languages and I have to restart again.
I also have the installation USB that comes with the MacBook Air and I get the same messege so I know it's not a problem with the installation disk itself.
Does anyone know what to do? I can't find a solution anywhere online.
    Thank.
    P.S
I have a Macbook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM.

I have disconnected all peripherals and I did a Safe Boot and I still get the Kernel Panic message.
I'm using the original Apple supplied RAM and I haven't added anything to the hardware since I bought it 8 months ago.
Eight months ago means you bought it used, yes?
The next step is to reseat the RAM, meaning remove it and put it back in.
If that doesn't work, then remove one module, try booting, move that module to the other slot, try booting, repeat with other module.
If neither RAM module works in either slot, then there are almost certainly other hardware issues (usually the logic board, which covers a plethora of possibilities; unfortunately, the fix for almost any LB issue is to replace the entire LB), as the odds of both RAM modules and/or both slots being faulty are extremely low (but possible).

  • Kernel Panic when I try to install OSX 10.3. Can anyone help?

I bought this iMac recently. It has OS 10.2.? installed and OS 9.1. When I try to install OS 10.3 I get a Kernel Panic when it reboots to start the installation. I ran the Norton Disk Doctor it had over in OS9 -- said it fixed some things and now ok but I still get a Kernel Panic trying to install Panther. I just want to re-format the whole computer with 10.3 and get rid of 9. How can I do that?
    Thanks.

    KeepItSimple:
If you're getting a kernel panic when trying to install, then I'd start with RAM and the installation disks.
RAM: Panther has higher standards for RAM than does 10.2.x; if you have more than one RAM module, take one out (assuming that leaves you with at least 128 MB) and try again. If it panics again, try switching the RAM. As far a brand names go, I prefere Kingston or Azen RAM.
Installation Disks: if they're grey, they won't work. Grey installation disks are packaged with specific Macs, and only contain hardware drivers for that specific Mac. You need the retail version of the disks, which were sold in a black box. There are four CDs in the set, three of which are for installing the OS (the fourth contains Developer Tools). The three OS disks are black with a large silver X in the middle.
    Good luck!

  • Install CD kernel panic (0.7.2)

Hi to all on this forum, and a big thanks to developers of this distro.
I get kernel panic when booting the install CD.
That is: I put the arch-0.7.2 install CD in my CDrom, then i type "arch(-noscsi) earlymodules=piix (or earlymods=piix) ide-legacy noapic nolapic etc., etc.
When I hit enter some lines whizz by till the line "Loading all-modules from CD" (or something).
After that I get: <0> Kernelpanic  - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt.
The machine is: PentiumII 233MHz, 32MB ram, Hercules Graphics card & some HDD (yep, it's still alive! )
    Thank you for your help.
ps. I get the same error with Ubuntu 6.10 install/live CD, but it requires 128MB ram. At first I thought it was ram...

One more thing for ppl with 32MB ram or less(?).
When using the quickinst script I got the "not enough space on the device" error. And the problem is that the script is using the /tmp dir to extract the packages into. But /tmp dir in my case was about 14Megs, way to small. Luckily for me, I have prepared a swap partition with 256Megs. I unmounted /tmp (tmpfs), reformated swap with mke2fs and remounted it as /tmp. Problem solved. I know I could fiddle with a script, but I'm not a scripting freak.
[Idea for developers:] Maybe you can use /mnt/tmp which is on the harddisk, instead of tmpfs which is in RAM.
I have to resolve some issues with config files now, my boot stops around "Starting uDevices" or something.
Cheers to all, hope it helps.

  • Kernel panics in 10.4.10 (interlock timeout for mutex)

I have been experiencing relatively frequent (multiple times per week) "interlock timeout for mutex" kernel panics since upgrading to 10.4.10. The panics seem to be random. I have not been able to determine any correlation between them other than they are all "interlock timeout for mutex".
I have tried all steps in the FAQ at http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html. This includes removing all third party hardware/drivers, testing hardware with TechTool Deluxe, and even resinstalling Mac OS X from scratch (the "erase and install" option) and I have not yet even attempted to migrate any data from the previous install.
I just experienced the same kernel panic again. The panic log is:

Before the fresh install I suspected a bad interaction with VMWare Fusion. A VMWare developer was kind enough to decode the stack backtrace for me (this is from a panic before the fresh install). He stated the problem was not with any mutex used by VMWare. Since the fresh install I have NOT installed VMWare Fusion or any other software that includes kernel extensions. Here's the previous decode:

    Any ideas? Please help!

I've been having exactly the same error on my Mac Pro over the past 2-3 weeks. At first, I thought the problem might be the new Apple Keyboard or even bad memory, but after searching these forums I found this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1001797&tstart=0
The last message in the thread points to an Apple discussion list which narrows the problem down to a serious bug in the Java 1.5 JRE for Mac OS X. This deadlock appears to happen when there are too many socket connections. I went about further narrowing this down by shutting down all desktop applications and leaving my system running for 24 hours without any kernel panics. I then launched each of my my "Login Items" and ran them one by one for 30 minutes.
For me, the problem seems to be with Azureus, which is in my Login Items. It usually causes the kernel panic within 10-20 minutes of having been launched. I realized that the problem started after I upgraded Azureus from 2.5.0.4 to the latest 3.0.x (without the VUZE content layer) a few weeks ago. I verified this by downgrading back to the 2.5.0.4 version and it has been running for 48 hours without any panics.
    Hope this helps.

If I just run xorgconfig no panic when I then run aticonfig etc panic.
For the moment I've given up on fglrx and am just trying radeon. the message I get says the system can't find the radeon driver    :?:

  • Kernel panics on new MBP 2.66 I7 - mostly bluetooth

    Hi -
I've been through the forums and can't seem to find this problem anywhere else; if I've missed it and it's solved - please redirect me. tx!
I received a 15" 2.66 i7 from Apple at the end of November 2010 as an applecare replacement for my mid-2008 2.6 MBP.
Since then I've been getting kernel panics related to bluetooth(first one 3 days after I got it) which are fairly random but increasing in frequency (4 in the last 3 weeks), and had abysmal wifi performance. It holds a connection while busy streaming or downloading just fine, but if I'm using sporadically (ie surfing) it drops, and the range is very poor(about half what my old MBP had). As I recently discovered this generation of MBP now combines the bluetooth and airport cards (4 senior techs I spoke with over the last 2 months at apple didn't know that).
I have Applecare and I've been making a nuisance of myself to apple, but we're getting nowhere. It passes all hardware tests, and since I can't make it panic on command they haven't been willing to see a problem. But the continuing panics indicate otherwise.
This is what has been done so far:
    SMC reset
    PRam Zap
    Safe start
Apple hardware tests - short and long - too many to count - all passed
Verify/Repair permissions - just the get usual java nonsense.
    Disk Verify - no problems
(3x) System wipe (w/zero pass to be sure) & reinstall system & all software cleanly from original disk. 3rd party software is Adobe CS, Microsoft office and Skype ONLY (has panic'd with only Adobe).
Capture data & all panic errors (I keep them) sent to apple engineering - also 3 times. The only suggestion they've come back with is possibly 3rd party hardware. I don't have any. My bluetooth are an apple wireless mighty mouse & wireless keyboard.
I've taken it to an ASP for diagnosis, and after days of testing they couldn't find a hardware problem. I finally had a bit of a tantrum with apple (not something I'm proud of, but after 2 months something had to be done) and they agreed to replace the bluetooth card. It wasn't until the asp ordered the part that anyone realized it was now combined w/airport.
The bluetooth/airport card replacement was done 7 days ago. To ensure there would be no left over effects from previous panics, I wiped my drive and reloaded my system & all software to give everything a clean start, hoping it would now all be rainbows and sunshine. (note - I copy all data files off manually to an external drive rather than backup/restore so I know exactly what is on my machine & where it is).
Two days ago, after powering the machine on and getting as far as loading safari, it seemed to stall for a few seconds, flashed a blue screen and went instantly dead. It powered back on just fine (no incorrect shutdown message) and seemed to work normally. I called applecare and pretty much got "it happens." After extended use and a load of 3rd party software it does, but right after a clean install....
A few hours later, another bluetooth kernel panic. The system is 'flakey'.... I have random things that I can't reproduce (yesterday it 'restarted' part way through startup....?)...
I'll post the most recent panic log. They all seem to be about the same( panic(cpu # varies ) and occur when I'm using safari although not necessarily loading anything (one happened when I wasn't even in the room).
*I did also have a graphics-related kernel panic after a clean install, but only one. Unless it happens again I won't worry about it.
*When this problem started in December it was with 10.6.5, and has continued with 10.6.6
Any input/suggestions would be greatly appreciated....
    sorry to be so wordy-
    cheers!
    J
Adobe CS & Microsoft Office only software loaded, apple wireless mighty mouse & wireless keyboard only extra hardware (though not in use at the time).

Thanks for you time and help!
I am confident it's not OSx corruption at any rate; it's just been reinstalled too many times for it to have garbled the same way each time. If it's just coded badly or incompatible there's nothing I can do about it. The only 3rd party software on this machine is Adobe and MSOffice, and they certainly shouldn't cause problems.
I took my mouse & keyboard with me to the ASP when it went for testing as that is a logical place to look, but they declined the need and didn't try them. When it panics I'm usually on the edge of the range of the mouse/keyboard and I will often see sporadic connect/disconnect messages. However, this happens quite a bit in relation to how often I get panics so could easily be unrelated. I mentioned this to the ASP but they didn't consider it relevant.
RAM's a likely culprit on new machines and test are notorious for not finding it (I ran Rember a while back -passed), but again the ASP pointed to bluetooth and said it was unlikely.
I think at this point I have to just dig in with apple and insist they diagnose and fix (with a timeline), or replace. Even if they don't replace it, if it motivates them and it gets fixed we'll have a solution.
    Thanks again for your help-
    J
