Last software installed CS3 two days before problem started. Am about to zapp hard drive and reinstall leopard. (which installed fine by the way). I read about the panic logs but do not know what am looking at. Would appricate if someone can give a pointer to this particular Kernel Panic. I have not changed any hardware.

You should report this to Apple while your 90 day free tech support period is still in effect for Leopard.

  • Kernel panic during Leopard 10.5.3/4 net-installation

    Hi,
We have built universal Leopard images on net-install server. I am getting kernel panic during net-installation of 10.5.3 and 10.5.4 images on old iMac bubble G4 machines. These images's net-installation works perfect on latest machines like G5, Intel MacPro, iMac G5.
I am not getting any problem with 10.5.2 image with this old bubble machine. But this problem occurs only after 10.5.3 images. Here is a small part panic trace, (Sorry, I couldn't get full trace since there was no way to copy it)

    Hi Rohit;
It appears your Leopard question has been posted in the OS 9 forum. You might have a better chance for an answer if you report over in the Leopard forum.

  • Kernel Panic Snow Leopard 10.6.4 + Logic Studio 9.1.1+ Motu firewire driver

Strange Kernel Panics are happening to my MacbookPRo early'08
I've just installed snow leopard, updated it to 10.6.4
Installed Logic Studio 9 and updated it to 9.1.1
Then I have a MOTU 896HD, installed drivers
then restarted my mac and there they're, kernel panic at thge startup, just after the first sound of powering on.
    this is the kernel panic:

I've done also a short video with an iPod nano to let you see completely this Kernel Panic. Don't wory, it's without any viruses or malware, I've just taken directly from my iPod nano.

    What can it be?
    Thanks a lot,
    Best Regards,
    Marco.

The info is linked above. I agree that that info should be on the download page, but not having that info there doesn't mean the drivers aren't 64 bit.
    http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technotes/64-bit-mac-compatibility
    Hardware
When using the 64-bit kernel in Mac OS X v10.6 and later, 64-bit hardware drivers must be used. MOTU FireWire/USB2 audio interfaces, PCI-424 audio interfaces, and USB MIDI interfaces can be used with the 32- or 64-bit kernel. *The minimum driver versions required for use with the 64-bit kernel are:*
    *FireWire/USB2 Audio 1.5 (37320)*
    PCI-424 Audio 1.5 (38352)
    USB MIDI 1.5 (37320)
The current version available for download (after you log in) is 1.5.38352, so according to MOTU it is a 64 bit driver and runs on the 64 bit kernel.
Download here, you may need to log in. Forget about the two pages you linked to, I'm not sure how you found them, but they are old and are no longer relevant. http://www.motu.com/download/downloadmatching_downloads.html?platform_id=2&productid=14
The link to the download itself is here, again this link may not work if you don't log in first.
    http://s3.amazonaws.com/motu/downloads/firewire/MOTUAudioInstaller-1.5.38352.zip
I downloaded the latest and tested it on 64 bit kernel and it worked fine, so yes, they are in fact 64 bit drivers. If you are still skeptical, just download for yourself and boot into the 64 bit kernel, you'll see that they work fine.

  • Help Resolving Kernel Panic Before Leopard!

Hi all! Before I begin, FYI: I read the article on Kernel panics, and I'm attempting to follow the instructions to the letter about how to report one and get help here. Apologies in advance if I'm doing something wrong.
I've had my iMac 2GHZ for 2 years, and I've NEVER had a kernel panic--until today, the day before I want to install Leopard. Go figure. Anyhow, if someone could possibly let me know what I'm dealing with/help me out, I'd love to proceed with my archive and install of Leopard. (As of now, I have not yet opened the package. lol)

It occurred as I opened an aol email IN APPLE's MAIL app.
    Connected to the machine:
    HP 3210 Printer (off),
    ION USB 2.0 External HD,
External flash reader (empty, via a USB 2.0 hub),
Wacom Tablet (via USB 2.0 hub).
Any steps I can take? Diskwarrior? Disk First Aid? Should I just move on with my archive and install?
    Thanks in advance guys.

    OK!
I detached my ion firewire external HD (Which has always played nice with my machine lol), as well as USB 2.0 hub which had 2-3 items attached.
I restarted, and attempted to recreate what happened. I opened Safari, then Mail, then Adium. Signed on to Adium, and began checking mail--which is when the panic happened.
So far, nothing... is there a next step?
PS: Two things you should know:
    1) I ran Diskwarrior (successfully) a day ago BEFORE this happened--would that have caused any issues?
    2) AFTER the panic, I ran Disk First Aid from an external HD startup disk--everything was ok!
Am I in the clear for an archive and install of Leopard? I have no problem trying anything else you might suggest!
    Thanks in advance

  • Kernel Panic under leopard

    Hi there,
I've gotten kernel panics. Several a day since I upgraded to Leopard.
This is what the report says:

Not sure how to interpret to anything else? Does anyone know what my next steps ought to be so I don't have kernel panics? Thanks a lot.

  • Kernel Panic on Leopard

Has anyone on this forum had kernel panics after installing Leopard running on a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 PCI (4 RAM Slots)? A semi-opaque gray slowly comes down the screen like a curtain, and then a please hold the power button message appears in several languages.
I was using Avid Media Composer 3.0 software at the time, and had not done anything on the computer for around 5 minutes. The fan turned on and became very loud. I have also noticed that my Lacie external firewire drive always goes to sleep with Leopard installed, however this did not happen on the previous operating system.
Any thoughts would be helpful - I am so so so so so frustrated with this as I use my Mac for my small business.
    ;o(

Okay. I've found the answer, posted 8th August 2008. Quoted from Avid.com:
Avid Media Composer v3.0.1 is an updated version of v3.0 that runs on OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) for Media Composer Adrenaline™ and Media Composer with Mojo® (classic) or Mojo SDI customers. Avid Media Composer Adrenaline, Avid Mojo and Avid Mojo SDI are not qualified with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) due to an issue between the Apple firewire driver in Apple OS X 10.5 and the Avid Adrenaline and Mojo drivers. This issue is not present with Apple OS X 10.4 Tiger and therefore Avid has released v3.0.1 for OS X 10.4 so that Avid Adrenaline and Avid Mojo customers can upgrade to v3.

  • Kernel Panic after Leopard update on Powerbook G4

I've updated my 15" Powerbook G4 to Leopard. Initially everything seemed ok (for about half an hour), but then I started to get Kernel Panics everytime my machine went to sleep.
It also sometimes didn't start up - I heard the start-up sound, but the screen stayed dark. After resetting the PRAM it would work again. I replaced the RAM, but the problem persisted.
I then thought it may be a hard disk problem, because when I booted from an external 10.5 or 10.4 disk, the problem was gone and my computer went to sleep without any problems.
So I ended up buying a new hard disk for my Powerbook, installed Leopard, and it indeed looked as if the problem was solved - for half a day. Because it re-occured after leaving my machine on overnight to allow spotlight to index the HD. The next morning, it wouldn't wake up from sleep mode (the white indicator light at the front also wasn't on), I restarted and the problem came back. Everytime my machine tries to go to sleep, or I put it to sleep, I get a kernel panic.
Any thoughts what this may be? I'd hate to have to go back to 10.4, but I also fear that it may be a hardware problem. Strange though that a replacement HD would fix it for a little while (or booting from an external HD).

    Hi Barry
Thank you for your help. You may give me too much credit for my hardware knowledge, though. I can replace RAM, but that's about it. Everything else is done by my hardware genius friend at work.
Nevertheless, I have now noticed that the problem seems to be specific for only one of my user accounts. Not surprisingly, the one I use most. None of my other accounts, including the admin account, are not affected. Wouldn't this argue against a hardware problem? Unless someone has a better idea, I may just have to delete this account and see if this will do the trick. Is there any way to painlessly migrate all the meat (keychain etc.) into a new account?
Thanks a bunch for any help.

  • Kernel panic: Snow Leopard erase & install

Continuous kernel panics when trying to erase and install Snow Leopard on my Mini. I tried it via disk and also a flash drive, but both ways end with kernel panic. Any ideas how to get past this?

I can only tell you what I would infer from what you have reported which is a kernel panic when booting from an installer disc. This being the case then the computer is not functioning fine. Hardware can fail at any time. When it does then, yes, one moment it's working then the next moment it's not.
If you've reported information that isn't correct or stated it in a way that's easy to misinterpret, then please expand on the situation. Are your installers good - do they work on another computer? Do the installers have a version of OS X that's compatible with the computer? For example, if the computer came with 10.6.3 installed when it was new, then you cannot boot it with a previous version of OS X.

  • Kernel panics with Leopard 10.5.0 and 10.5.1

I'm consistently getting kernel panics that seem to be connected to my airport extreme card. These kernel panics are much more likely to occur when using an application that is network intensive (such as a bittorrent application).
The panic reports also indicate that the issue is caused by the airport driver; here is a copy of the latest panic report:

  • Kernel panic after Leopard install

Having the same problem with my Dual 2ghz. It ran fine for about 3-4 days after the upgrade. Then I had the same experience as you. Came around the corner to hear fans and full speed and a kernel panic on the screen. I have tried several reboots, SMU reset, cleared out a bunch of Pref panels and tried to clean up anything that could be in conflict. Sometimes it would crash right away...other times after 15-20 min. I just tried reinstall of 10.5. Same problem afterwards. I am about to restore from a Superduper backup that I made before the upgrade. I guess I will run on 10.4 for a while. Verify that the hardware is all good and do the upgrade again.
Any suggestions in the meantime are welcome.

    William,
Please start a new topic thread. You'll get a wider audience, and not confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them. There are numerous causes for kernel panics, and they need to be isolated one by one.

  • Random Kernel Panic with Leopard 10.5.8 - Quad G5 2.5 Ghz

    Quad G5 2.5 Ghz - KP with 10.5.8
Recently I just upgrade to Leopard 10.5.8 using the 10.5.1 disk retail (archive and install) and adding the Time Capsule. Since this day I have an average 2/3 times KPs per week (mostly during the night when the machine is in sleep mode ?!? - the machine fans make big noise when it got KPs).
    I have tried:
    1) Reinstall a clean 10.5.8 (archive and install)
    2) Eliminate all start-up items
    3) Reset PRAM
    4) Turn the Time Machine off
    5) Do all tests with TechTool Deluxe and Rember (loop test on RAMs)
    6) Repair permissions (using Disk Utility on the install disk) but there are always a lot of stuff... According to Apple you can safely ignore those messages
At this point I have 2 options in my mind:
    a. Going back to Tiger
    b. Looking a new Intel machine
One more thing: Since I upgrade to Leopard, it seems that the machine is not really in sleep mode (I still hear the fans). I have to force The machine entering into the sleep mode using the sleep command from main menu.
    Thanks for any suggestions !

Most of KP's log points to CPU#2. However Techtool Deluxe did not spot out any errors ...
=> Is there any tool to test extensively the CPUs (PowerPC) ?
BTW, here is the latest KP log:

  • Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 causes immediate kernel panic

Has anyone else encountered this issue? I have tried twice to no avail now to install the keyboard firmware update. I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this problem.
Given that I haven't had any keyboard problems, I am guessing that I can just ignore this update.
Note that contrary to the comment accompanying the installer that it will launch automatically, I had to start it manually both times.
Leopard's quality of updates has really tanked in relation to Tiger's. I have never seen a kernel panic before upgrading to Leopard... in fact, until Leopard, the kernel was so stable with Tiger that I was lulled into thinking that Macs don't have kernel panics. Leopard has provided abundant proof now to the contrary. I think that's a shame.

    David
You should also report this to Apple at <http://www.apple.com/feedback/> so that they can check whether there is a bug in the update or somewhere else. If they receive several similar feedback messages it will alert them to a problem. Generally they don't respond directly unless they want further information such as a copy of the installation log.
You could also attempt a re-instal in safe mode (startup holding the shift key until the Apple logo appears. If you haven't recently done so use Disc Utility to Repair Permissions and see whether this finds any problems. Even startup from your installation dvd, select language, then choose Disk Utility from the top menu and Repair Disk. All of these processes may allow the installer to complete its task.
Note that some firmware updates are slow completing their tasks and usually they advise that there should be no other activity on the computer until the process has completed. I've seen it mentioned that the computer may look to have frozen but to wait - not for ever though!

  • Kernel Panic when I insert Snow Leopard Disc

Hi, when I insert the snow leopard retail disc, my mac startup with a kernel panic, without log in logs folder. And on screen appear this.
    http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/282/20111115195144.jpg

The 2011 iMacs were originally shipped with OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard and to my knowledge the Retail Snow Leopard DVDs are version 10.6.3 and thus too "old" for your iMac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
Use the grey-labeled OSX Snow Leopard DVD that came with your iMac instead of the Retail one.
If you don't have it anymore, call Apple with ythe serialnumber of your iMac at ahnd and ask for replacement.

  • Frequent Kernel Panics on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

I recently bought a used MacbookPro5,1 with a 2,4 Ghz Core2Duo Processor. It was upgraded to 4 GB of RAM and a 750GB HDD by the previous owner. When I received it yesterday, it was running 10.6.3, I think. It worked flawlessly for the first couple of hours. Then I downloaded the update to 10.6.8. No Problems. After that, it wanted to download and install even more updates for iTunes, Java, and the like. During this update process the Macbook had its first Kernel Panic. It was followed by 3 or 4 more during the next couple hours, with no particular pattern. (Browsing the web, gaming, etc.)
I did run a memtest, and it crashed the first time I was running it. However, I was doing other tasks at the same time. The second time, I ran 2 memtests, with absolutely no problems.
The last Kernel Panic occurred while I tried to uninstall the Avast antivirus I had installed, since I suspected it as a cause for the panics. After unistall, I had no more panics.
Today, I used the Macbook for a couple of hours without any problems. I spent a lot of the time playing a 3D game from the app store. No problems. Then, another kernel panic while watching a youtube video, and another a couple hours later while just browsing facebook. I did another memtest, still nothing.
I then uninstalled firefox, thinking it might be the problem, since it was involved in most of the panics.
I was able to use the laptop for a couple of hours, and now it had another panic while watching a video on safari...

I hope any of you guys can help me solve this problem. I really don't know what to do. I really hope its not hardware related. If you need any more information please tell me.

I assume you have working installer discs? If so here's a suggestion:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
             dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of

  • Mac Pro gets kernel panic while trying to boot from Leopard install disk

    Hi all,
I'm finally getting around to installing leopard on my 2006 Mac Pro. It has the x1900 video card from Apple and all firmware is up to date. The install disk upgraded my Macbook with no problems.
When booting I get the wipe to grey, kernel panic, "You must restart your Mac" screen. Any suggestions?
BTW the Leopard install disk installs OSX 10.5.0
    Thanks

I finally found that the mac pro needs installer 10.5.2 or it will do the kernel panic thing. I did find a way around this though.
    1) I took an external drive hooked to my macbook and installed 10.5 on it. Then booted from it and did all the updates, installed all my necessary software (ilife 08, parallels, and so on).
    2) I then made sure my Mac pro's drive was currently backed up and then booted up from the backup and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the new OS 10.5.4 Leopard disk onto my Mac Pro boot drive.
    3) After that I used migration assistant to transfer all my user settings and such.
It all worked great and I now have Leopard on my Mac Pro.
Just thought I'd let everyone know how I got around it.
