Kernel Panic in Snow Leopard (crash!)
After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I have experienced several kernel panics (the mac version of the blue screen) which requires hard reboot. It seems to be getting worse, and the today I`ve already had 5 kernel panics after 6 hours of usage. The only pieced software installed/changed in the previous weeks are software updates from Apple.
My Macbook panics when running a minimum of programs:
- Safari
- Mail
- Thunderbird
- AdiumX
- Cisco VPN Client (latest version)
The Cisco client might be the problem, but I have experienced panics without the VPN client running too, and the panics are more frequent now than last week (use the VPN client every day).
Any ideas?
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
According to:
http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client 2.4.0.154 (BETA) works in 32bit or 64 bit.
Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client 2.3.0.185 32bit Mode ONLY
Cisco Clean Access Agent 4.1.3.
Are the Cisco titles that work with Snow Leopard.
Adium 1.3.6 or later is needed.
It currently reports issues with Thunderbird. Although I'd look elsewhere for kernel panics*:
http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html
Also if you migrated from a PowerPC mac, that may be the source of kernel panics.

Frequent Kernel Panics on Snow Leopard 10.6.8
I recently bought a used MacbookPro5,1 with a 2,4 Ghz Core2Duo Processor. It was upgraded to 4 GB of RAM and a 750GB HDD by the previous owner. When I received it yesterday, it was running 10.6.3, I think. It worked flawlessly for the first couple of hours. Then I downloaded the update to 10.6.8. No Problems. After that, it wanted to download and install even more updates for iTunes, Java, and the like. During this update process the Macbook had its first Kernel Panic. It was followed by 3 or 4 more during the next couple hours, with no particular pattern. (Browsing the web, gaming, etc.)
I did run a memtest, and it crashed the first time I was running it. However, I was doing other tasks at the same time. The second time, I ran 2 memtests, with absolutely no problems.
The last Kernel Panic occurred while I tried to uninstall the Avast antivirus I had installed, since I suspected it as a cause for the panics. After unistall, I had no more panics.
Today, I used the Macbook for a couple of hours without any problems. I spent a lot of the time playing a 3D game from the app store. No problems. Then, another kernel panic while watching a youtube video, and another a couple hours later while just browsing facebook. I did another memtest, still nothing.
I then uninstalled firefox, thinking it might be the problem, since it was involved in most of the panics.
I was able to use the laptop for a couple of hours, and now it had another panic while watching a video on safari...

I hope any of you guys can help me solve this problem. I really don't know what to do. I really hope its not hardware related. If you need any more information please tell me.I assume you have working installer discs? If so here's a suggestion:
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc. Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key. Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current. -

Keep getting Kernel panics on Snow leopard 10.6.3
I recently messed up my leopard install... long story. When restoring the system I decided to go with Snow leopard, thought why not, would like to become more familiar with it. Ever since I got it I have been getting Kernel Panics out the wazoo. I have been saving the error reports for the lastest 4..
Keep in mind I have looked into the issue and tried deleting the cisco vpn client. I use a microsoft keyboard without any Microsoft intellitype software installed, so i tried using a mac keyboard, didn't help.
At first I thought the issue was due to my first restore and attempt to restore my old user file that I have backed up. The first time I copied my documents, app support, and some pref files. Got a kernel panic within 20 minutes.
So I created a new user (deleted the old one) again and restored again, this time I installed the programs with the snow leopard installs before copying the app support files. I also copied the documents as well. I only copied one pref file for Mac Msn Messenger. I also copied the keychain from my old leopard install. even though I did it this way I am still getting Kernel Panics over and over. I am up to 5 for today alone. I would love to know why. Below I will post my error reports from oldest to newest.

Please help,I just don't know what is going on with this computer. It doesn't happen due to anything I keep doing that I can tell. Sometimes when typing sometimes when listing to music and reading a web page. Sometimes while writing a email in entourage. It is costing my work time and I will have to revert to leopard tomorrow if I can't find some sort of solution.
Please let me know. Thanks.HI,
Try booting your Mac with only the keyboard and mouse connected. See if you get a kernel panic.
If you do, go here for help to Resolve Kernel Panics

Kernel panic in Snow Leopard on 2007 Macbook
My girlfriend has had a Macbook since July 2007, and it's served her just fine for the past four and a half years. Recently, in the past couple of months, she's been getting intermittent recurring kernel panics. I've found various suggestions for "fixing" the problem, but none of the ones I've been able to try -- uninstalling every program downloaded in the last three months, as well as Flash -- have worked. Any help would be appreciated.
Below is the text of the most recent kernel panic:

or hardware that is marginal. See my kernel panic FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html
If you can check the log files, you might get a clue as to what might be going on.
Also check that all your drivers are Snow Leopard compatible. Here's a guide for printers and scanners:

Daily Kernel Panics in Snow Leopard
I'm running a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) and am getting daily (sometimes multiple daily) kernel panics. It's been months since hardware changes (upgraded to 8Gb RAM, quality modules that work fine on other identical Macs). Today is the first day that it's happened more than once, but I hope that's not a sign of things to come...
Here are Pastebin dumps of the Problem Report, System log, and Console log.
I haven't done any serious software updates in a while, but I did set up a Windows XP VM in Parallels Desktop, which has been running during most kernel panics. Maybe bad drivers that are incompatible or need updating? It sometimes runs for hours before a panic, so I don't think running in Safe Mode would be effective (unless I take it home overnight, which I may try).
It seems that my problem is similar to another thread I found on this forum, but mine is a bit different, and I don't run any microsoft hardware (Logitech keyboard and mouse). Anything else anyone notices in the logs that might point to my issue?Well, see what happens in safe mode. I would also do a precautionary:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Then reboot normally. Safe mode should also clear out some system caches that can cause panics if they become corrupted. But you would need to use a utility like Lion Cache Cleaner 6.0.9 to thoroughly clear all caches including user and system caches. -
Kernel panics in Snow Leopard after bootup
My 24" 2.8GHz iMac suddenly started crashing last night. The screen will dim, and i get a message saying i need to reboot. This usually happens a couple of minutes after the computer has rebooted. Sometimes when i reboot, the computer will beep three times in succession, over and over until i reboot again. So far i have tried zapping the PRAM (no difference), booting up in Safe Mode (still crashes, but lasts a little longer before doing so), repairing disk permissions (crashes before finishing) and running the Apple Hardware test from the install disc (freezes as soon as it starts). i've also tried pulling out the RAM and re-seating it. None of these seem to be helping much. Any ideas? i'm guessing i'm probably just going to have to take it to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store, but i'd like to have an idea of what's happening before i have a chance to take it in.
Here are the details from the crash report:

Kernel Panic on Snow Leopard 10.6.5 with kernel 64 bit
After I upgraded to 8 Gbyte my MBP 5,5, I worked fine with kernel at 32 bit. I've just done an experiment switching the kernel to 64 bit.
After some time, I get a kernel panic like the following:

Can anyone suggest me any idea about this kernel panic?
I do not guess that the problem is on the RAM. At 32 bit the MBP works perfectly! Most likely this: com.sophos.kext.sav 7.2.0

XDCAM EX SxS Cards will give Kernel Panic under Snow Leopard.
In my conversation with Sony support they advised me that unfortunately
Snow Leopard is not currently supported by the current versions of XDCAM
related software's from Sony.
Since this is a very recent release from Apple that involves significant
change to the Mac OS it may take several months, perhaps winter or
spring for full Snow Leopard support from Sony. The exact schedule is
still TBD.
It is therefore recommended to continue using the most recent release of
Leopard to maintain smooth operation of the XDCAM software within the
Mac environment.
For your reference the latest Sony software release versions are as
below:
As of August 26th 2009
PDW-U1 v 2.420
PDW-U1 Utility for PC or Mac v 2.21
FAM Driver 2.20 comes with the PDZ-1 software or XDT for Mac
PDZ-1 v 2.60
XDCAM Viewer 2.30 PC only separate from PDZ-1
XDCAM TRANSFER for FCP v 2.10.0
EX Browser 2.5.1
Thanks for your continued support of XDCAM!The best solution to the thumbnail issue seems to be to abandon XDCAM Transfer altogether until Sony deigns to offer a version compatible with Snow Leopard, and use Log and Transfer within Final Cut. You must instal the Sony plugin downloaded from here:
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/resource.downloads.bbsccms-assets -micro-xdcamex-downloads-LogTransferUtilityAppleFCP.shtml.
I discovered this after downgrading from Snow Leopard so as to keep working without having to manually import every shot... but have since re-upgraded to Snow Leopard, and everything works fine as above. -
Safari (5.1) caused kernel panic in Snow Leopard.
Woot!!!!!
nice surprise Apple
I was surfing very happy and listening to music (itunes 10.4) ... and suddenly Kernel panic! wow.

I don't know if it's Safari or me not using it for such a long time.
If the above fixes don't work, all I can suggest is to use Firefox or whatever until this attack thing blows over and see after that. -
Frequent Kernel Panics with Snow Leopard
I'm often getting kernel panics. I have tried testing with Tech Tool Pro, but nothing comes up as odd.
I have a late 2007 iMac - iMac5,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz 3 GB
... and I have many logs which I cannot attach here, but mostly start so:
Tue Dec 22 12:43:57 2009
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x226820): "thread_invoke: preemption_level -1, possible cause: unlocking an unlocked mutex or spinlock"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1486.2.11/osfmk/kern/sched_prim.c:1471
Backtrace (CPU 0), Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack)
Anyone any ideas?
DavidKernel Panics are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
Disconnect all peripherals, except keyboard and mouse. Reconnect one at a time to see if you can find the culprit.
If that's no help, one of the discs that came with your Mac should have the +Apple Hardware Test+ on it, with instructions on how to run it printed (in very tiny type) on the disc. Start by running that.

Snow Leopard crashes because of gdb
Hello all,
I am debugging a binary (assembly only) using GDB 6.3.50-20050815 (Apple version gdb-1510) installed via latest XCode version and I am interested in watching $EAX for a specific value.
The problem is whenever I set a watchpoint for a register ("watch $eax", or "watch $eax == 0x12345678" i.e.) and issue "continue", the system crashes right away and I get rebooted. If I single-step it, there is no problem, until I continue the execution.
I've tried setting it to use software watchpoint (expecting a less severe error), but still Snow Leopard crashes.
On GDB 7.1 I was facing a similar problem (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4670185/snow-leopard-crashes-after-gdb-attemp ts-to-access-an-address-using-watchpoints) but I let it go since this was a too fresh gdb version. But I don't think this is the case for watching a register on 6.3.
Any ideia? I wonder is there is any log that I could look at.
ThanksHi,
There was no relevant log info. See console output for "All Messages":

Just before reproducing the crash I generated a debug dummy message ("sdsdsd") as a checkpoint, using "logger", and there was any log message further this one (besides the bootup ones, of course). Bootup messages don't say anything. I checked it using Console and Profiler.
I was also looking forward to see any log or gdb dump.
UPDATE: crash happens for watching a specific value and not for a general watch ("watch $eax" is fine; "watch $eax == 0x12345678" reboots). -
Snow Leopard crashes increasing
Hello-
Since updating to Snow Leopard, my mac crashes three-four times a week. Lately it's been happening two or more times a day. It starts with the screen freezing, then part of the screen doesn't display the video correctly (like another image is being displayed...) then it restarts on it's own. I've never seen the display do this- and it can't be a good sign.
I haven't been able to determine any responsible application, and I'm on my fourth SL re-install. Does anybody have any ideas why Snow Leopard crashes so much? Any ideas are welcome.
ThanksAn update to my problem:
I think there are two types of crashes happening:
1) _With restart_. This happens almost exclusively while iDVD is rendering video.
2) _System freeze._ I can't pin these crashes to any application, and I have to do a hard restart to get out of it. These happen almost daily.
I tried reinstalling iDVD from the disk that came with my computer, but he option to install is greyed out. I deleted the iDVD cache in my home folder and themes from iDVD 1-4. Unfortunately it is still happening.
Ay thoughts?
Thanks! -
ITunes 10.5 on Snow Leopard crashes
My iTunes 10.5 on Snow Leopard crashes after several minutes from starting. I've tried to reinstall it many times, but nothing helps. What should I do to solve this problem?
Very many thanks to you, Putaro! Your answer provided the solution. It was a buggy plug-in that turned out to be the culprit.
You're off the hook, Apple, and my apologies for stating that you let a dog run loose. You skated by this time, Apple. But I'm watching you.
But again, Putaro's reference to the plugins I had installed over the years turned out to illuminate the problem. I have several plugins in my iTunes plugins folder, pretty much all designed to add more visualizer functionality. I removed all of them, and ALL of the problems I noted in my post went away, with full iTunes functionality restored.
I began adding the plugins back to hopefully single out the culprit. Among the ones I had been using included fielder, G-Force, Timestrech, volcanokit, QuartzComposer, and Jax. I hadn't used any of them in a while - probably at least a verison or more back in iTunes updates, but iTunes continued to work with all of them installed. Currently, only QuartzComposer continues to work in iTunes 10.4. The rest no longer even show up as visualizer opitons, with one exception. Jax does show up, but does not work. AND THE PRESENCE OF JAX IS WHAT KILLED MY ITUNES.
I looked into it and went back to the developer, and it appears that they discontinued developing Jax some time ago - evidently, it was buggy and crash prone. I remember after buying it, having problems with it - having never worked to its touted potential, but I didn't pursue it, and never uninstalled it. Leaving it in there caused all iTunes functionality to cease with the iTunes 10.4 update.
If you've got Jax installed, consider removing it before updating to iTunes 10.4.
My iTunes is now working right as rain, thanks again to Putaro!
