Kernel Panic Installing Tiger 10.4.10 after Leopard
I have tried out Leopard for a while on our iMac but want to go back to Tiger.
Unfortunately when I run the Tiger install disk that came with the machine I get a Kernel panic saying the disk isn't for PowerPC 6,3.
This looks like the sort of error people get when using disks not shipped with the machine, but these really are the original disks.
Now it is possible that I did a firmware update at some point, could this be causing my problem? Is there a way to rollback to the original firmware that shipped with the machine?
I'm clutching at straws really.
Would really appreciate any pointers.
Thanks,
Adam
Thanks for the response Dale.
This happens whenever booting from the Tiger disk.

Internet kernel panics since Tiger upgrade
Last Friday (9/9) I upgraded my eMac from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.2, and added memory (purchased from Apple), increasing from 256 to 768 MB. Since then I have experienced kernel panics four times while connected to the Internet (Safari) via built-in cable modem (I use dial-up, 56k modem). Anyway, I think it's a kernel panic-- gray screen descends and says I must restart computer using power button; when I restart, message appears saying: "The computer was restarted after MAC OS X quit unexpectedly." On a few other occasions, my modem is disconnecting and I have to dial up again. Anyone have any ideas what might be going on and what I can do to solve the problem?
JMVP: I did update Safari; as far as Java, I was downloading update via my dial-up with 56k modem; with only about 7 minutes remaining (after a nearly two-hour download) the modem disconnected, so I have to start from scratch tomorrow. The install disk for Tiger was for 10.4, then I used Software Update to download 10.4.2 Combo Updater and did permissions repair.
Someone at my office suggested that perhaps the newly-installed memory module is defective; I guess that's a possibility, but my guess is that the odds are small that Apple would ship a defective module (or am I naive?) Guess my first step will be to remove the new module and see if computer runs smoothly. I hope it does; at least I'll know what the problem is. I fear, however, problems will persist and I'll be back to Square 1.
One other thing, I noticed that since Tiger/memory installation, when I put the computer to sleep a small but very bright flash of light is emitted in the center of the screen just as computer enters sleep mode. I'm certain this never used to occur. Wonder what that's all about. -
Kernel panic installing mountain lion
I own 2 iMac's (24 and 27 inch), 2 Macbook Air, 2 Macbooks. All these machines crashed with a kernerl panic when upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion.
Apple have screwed up here somewhere. However, the fix is simple enough.
Here's what happens:
1. Download the Mountain Lion App
2. Install
3. System restarts
4. System crashes with a kernel panic on re-start
The fix...
1. Turn off the machine by holding down the power button
2. Turn on the machine and immediately press the 'option' key (located between the CTRL and CMD key)
3. The machine will prompt you to select the boot disk, options are 'Mac HD' and 'Installer'
4. Select the 'Installer' disk
Thats it, the upgrade will continue.
As this happened to all my machines I figure a lot of other people are having similar problems hence my reason for posting this.MacBook Pro mid 2010
well the first time i upgraded to ML it gave me a kernel panic at the restart part of the installation process. then i did a clean install after i restored from a backup and it was working fine i could actually log in and use my files, applications and documents with no problems so i shut it down for the day but then when i started it up again it gave me a kernel panic again so i had to restore AGAIN! so i tried the clean install again but this time i didnt transfer my files at the time of installation instead i wantd to see if the kernel panic would happen again so i installed it like a brand new mbp and restarted my computer guess what NO KERNEL PANIC!! so i then tried transfering my files and stuff and restoring using migration assistant and restarted again and i got the kernel panic i got my hopes up for nothing. i reintalled it again and i cant turn of my computer i have to wait for an update or a fix and i know for sure that its a software problem not hardware hopefully. -
I purchased it in December and three days ago it kernel panicked twice. After the second event, it will not boot at all. The charge cord is green when it's plugged in and seems to indicate the battery is fine. When it went into kernel panic, the trackpad locked up. I had a technician open it up to see if there were any obvious issues and everything looked ok visually. I can't boot it into safe mode or anything involving powering the machine on, as it is not responding to anything. I have a major test coming up in five days that I am taking on this laptop and am desperate for answers. Any information you can offer at all would be helpful.
Try SMC and NVRAM resets:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Then try a safe boot again:

Reoccurring kernel panic - installing Mountain Lion, iMac
1) Just installed lion and it restarted and got the black screen that says "You need to restart your computer". Kernel panic reoccures every time I restart.
1a) zapped PRAM
2) Still occures when booting in safe mode.
3) Unplugged all devices from back of computer.
4) Ran disk utility from Original DVD (snow leopard), and disk permissions.
5) Still getting kernel panic on startup.
6) Tried cmnd-r on startup, ran disk utility.
I can quit disk utility and select my HD as startup and reboot back into 10.7.4
But I can't upgrade to Mountain Lion.

I have been running arch on my laptop for a while now but now i wanted to install Arch in my desktop. The desktop runs Mepis ATM, and is a lot slower then my laptop with arch so i just end up using my laptop all the time.
However when i try to boot the installation cd I get the message "Kernel panic - not syncing cpu context corrupt". I had the same problem when i tryd to install some other linux distributions on that computer(yoper, vivaldi).
Can someone be so kind to anwser these questions:
1 - what is a kernel panic?
2 - why do I get one?
3 - is there a way that i can install Arch on that machine?
- Arn0The CPU is a Athlon 64 2800+ on a Gigabyte GA-K8NS NF3-250 ATX S754 motherboard. Its not overclocked and uses the AMD box cpu cooler. I installd Windows (yuck) on it and thats working. Ill try and bootstrap it today, it boots just fine with Mepis and Knoppix.

Kernel panics installing...
So I installed 10.5 (non-server edition) via Firewire from my MBP. It apparently would not boot up all the way. Can 10.5 run on a 512RAM machine?
I then connected a monitor and mouse and it refused to boot up, although the initial Apple screen showed briefly.
I then erased the hard disk and attempted to install 10.3 ServerX twice. Both times I saw a kernel panic at the start of the install. I know 10.3 will run on 512RAM.
Should I fiddle around with memory cards? Get new or larger ones? What's the strategy? This is Xserve 1Ghz, new 230G disk.Strange stuff. I updated to to 10.5.5 and suddenly it wouldn't boot, stalling at the blue screen. So I figure 10.5.5 is larger than 10.5.0 and it is out of RAM. Looking at the Syteem Profiler page (which I had wisely saved on my MBP) it says the machine has one stick of 256 PC2700. But opening up the case it definitely has 2 sticks of 256 PC3200.
So I just ordered the 2GB set from OWC. Still, I'd like to know what gives with the disagreement on existing RAM. Possibly one stick is defective, and the other is mislabeled? -
Kernel Panic Subsequent to Mac OS X Snow Leopard Update
I can no longer start my Mac Mini since an automatic update of Mac OS X 10.6 today, Sunday, March 27th 2011. I have tried restarting 3 times and cannot through a kernel panic. What's up?

I have no idea what you are talking about here. I have never heard of such a thing as hardware being obsoleted by an upgrade.
I have heard of hardware failing and that causing kernel panics but never heard of anything like you are suggesting.
It sounds like you need more tin foil in your protective hat there.

Will Tiger drop in price after Leopard?
Can I still buy Tiger after Leopard is released, and will Tiger go down in price then?
Not directly from Apple. Apple will simply stop
selling it. You'll then have to look for it from
third-party vendors. Since this is a third-party
matter we can't really tell you what will happen.
Thanks. Just wondered what had happened in the past. I figure if it drops a lot, it might be nice to have an OS closer to what everyone is designing for. But if it's still gonna be over $100 or close to that, I'm happy with Panther. -
Archive and Install - how to move ahead after Leopard is in...
After a long and frustrating day installing Leopard on my MacBook Pro (five months old), I finally have it up and running but don't know how I should recover settings and documents from my archived files. As per Apple's advice, I did the archive and install without preserving settings.
Actually, documents are fairly straightforward, but what about Entourage data (emails, addresses, etc.) and Firefox settings, etc. Do I need to drag the old Applications, Librart, System, and User fils (from Previous Systems folder) into the new Finder under Leopard?
Also, will applications like Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. need to be reinstalled?
Please advise.
Thanks very much.
Regards,
TomI have a similar problem with Leopard's archive and install. No only did I have difficulty locating photos, music, etc. but I found that I didn't have "permission" to move them from the archive. I then with through the permission process giving myself access to everything on my Macintosh partition. (I have an iMac with both Mac Tiger and Windows XP on separate partitions). Only now I can't even get the Mac part of my computer to open at all! To be continued - - -.

Trying to Install Tiger iMovie HD on Snow Leopard But Can't
I really like iMovie HD better than iMovie 09. I used to have a 2006 MBP with Tiger and iMovie HD, but the laptop went sour and Apple replaced it with a mid-2009 MBP with Leopard. I really don't like this iMovie and it seems to render video differently. I still have my 2006 MBP install discs and I tried to install iMovie HD on my 2009 MBP but it won't let me because of the new hardware.
Is there any way that I can get my old iMovie HD on my new MBP. I mean I have the original install discs and yet still can't run them on my new Mac. Not cool.I tried extracting from the install discs and I couldn't find iMovie. Disc 1 had the basic OS apps like iCal, Mail, etc. Disc 2 doesn't show anything. All Disc 2 has is a file that says use Disc 1 to install the OS. Am I maybe missing a disc?
By the way, how safe are those online download sites? I'm worried about downloading the program and getting some harmful software. Especially since I don't have virus protection on my Mac. -
2007 MacBook Pro 2.2GHz A1226 Kernel Panic after 10.8.3 install
Started getting KP's after installing 10.8 for a client. Here's my steps thus far with the KP log at the bottom of my post.
2007 non-uni MBPro 2.2 GHz A1226
CCC clone of old user hdd to .sparsebundle image (about 120GB) was running OS X 10.6.5
Repartition, erase brand new 500GB 2.5" SATA HDD
CCC > Window > Disk Center > installed Recovery HD 10.8 on the 500GB drive
CCC cloned my 10.8.2 + Apps image (used on dozens of client Macs without issue) to the 500GB drive
booted into MBPro HD and ran Migration Assistant to import old user account from the CCC backup I made earlier
ran all Apple updates and ran Repair Permissions, rebooted
on reboot... gray screen with text that said: "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up."
not sure what was wrong, I booted into Recover 10.8 > ran DU repair disk and repair permissions
still getting kernel panic on reboot... but after a few tries it would boot into the user account. Once in user account everything runs fine. Only getting KP when I start up the MacBook Pro. weird.
Thinking it was bad OSX install from my CCC image... I went ahead and reinstalled from Recovery HD fresh 10.8.2, then ran updates, etc.
still getting kernel panic. Was fine on 10.6.5. Only noticed it when upgraded to 10.8.x
did SMC and PRAM resets, still issues
booted into Safe Mode... no errors that I can see, but then again it won't KP when I'm running anything.
Have not yet re-seated or replaced ram (3rd party 2 x 2GB 667mhz) but plan to do that tonight.
Anything else you guys can think of? It appears to be a GPU issue... "IOGraphicsFamily" and "NVDAResman"
Thanks. - Brian

The video memory of mine is 64 MB. no idea how and why.
Maybe it's because I got my macbook pro repaired two years ago due to a video chip failure.
The DDR2 memory installed is a single 4GB
One of the memory slot is not working
Any suggestions????? -
Kernel panic after 10.5.6 download
Hey,
I've been having a problem since I tried to load 10.5.6 through the software updater. The update froze while verifying and then restarted. When it restarts I get a kernel panic and the apple light comes on and the computer makes noises. I restarted it over and over and get a kernel panic on the startup screen. I can get in if I start in safe mode and then unplug the computer and turn it back on which lets me log in normally with no kernel panic. It says its running 10.5.6 but it isnt listed as a download in software updater and there is no evidence I downloaded it other than my system profiler saying its running 10.5.6. Also, limewire no longer works because of a kernel panic and when I try to open anything I download a screen pops up saying to restart causing a kernel panic.
Is there any way I can get the computer back to 10.5.5 or re-download 10.5.6? I dont have a startup disk and Im not mac literate.....Im just trying to find a way to fix it without having to wipe the memory.
Message was edited by: jdm6846I thought I had downloaded the 10.5.6 update successfully, BUT I'm having a kernel panic every 20 minutes since then. Each time it happens, I've been watching .avi files in QuickTime Pro. My kernel panic looks a little different, perhaps because I'm on a PPC G4? It's looks like white text across the screen with black behind the text.
Before today, I had kernel panics every few days or so, I suspected it was caused by the installation of several Adobe Air apps (Twhirl & TweetDeck) as I hadn't had a kernel panic since a clean install of Leopard, UNTIL after the Adobe Air apps were installed. I can live with a kernel panic every few days, but now after the 10.5.6 update a kernel panic every 20 minutes is beyond ridiculous.
Disk Utility's Disk Verify says everything is fine, but permission repair gives me several warnings that I have no clue what to do about:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/setregion" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Permissions differ on "System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -rwxr-xr-x .
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner " has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
What's the best course of action? -
Updated to 10.4.5 and now keep getting Kernel Panics
I keep getting a kernel panic at start up, or shortly after reaching the desktop. I have tried both repairing permissions and repairing the start up disk using Apple's Disk Utility. Ran Disk Warrior, and Techtool Pro 4.1.1, all to no avail. No matter what I do I can't seem to rid my hard drive of the kernel panic.
The Kernel Panics started after I installed the OS 10.4.5 PPC Update and the iTunes 6.0.3 update. Prior to installing the updates my machine ran flawlessly with all of the below hardware.

Thanks,
KenAll I can tell you from the panic log is that there's a problem either with the video card and/or the video drivers. You might try the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this doesn't help then visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on kernel panics. -
Security Update 2008-004 (PPC) caused kernel panic
I installed the Security Update 2008-004 (PPC) and Safari Update 3.1.2 and now I can't access my main startup drive +(the problem started immediately after I restarted my G4 after installing the Security Update 2008-004 -- I got the gray screen with the Apple logo, but it froze there and never got to the login screen).+
My G4 PowerBook (laptop) is running the update just fine -- no kernel panics.
I have a 2nd internal HD on my G4 (desktop) that I use for just such emergencies. The only difference is the 2nd HD does NOT have the Security Update 2008-004 (PPC) and Safari 3.1.2 update. +(Last security update was Security Update 2008-003.)+
I did gain access to my main startup HD at one point and it worked fine until I shut it down +(I unplugged all peripherals (FireWire and USB) and, somehow, got it to startup correctly, then I plugged everything back in).+
*But, the next day, I was back to square 1 when I didn't unplug all my peripherals.*
If I have to unplug everything to startup every time, then I'm going to yank my hair out!
The Mac OS Update software is surely to blame for the kernel panic, 'cause I don't have to do it for the 2nd HD without the 2008-004 Security Update.
Plus, once my G4 is up and running on the 2nd HD, I have total access to my main startup HD. TechTool Pro (v.4.1.1) found no problems with any of the files on it, including the Volumes and Finder Info files, which all tested free of any errors.
According to the not-so-helpful advice from "experts," I'll need to reinstall the MAC OS 10.4.x.
HOWEVER, I want to know if I start from my original DVD 10.4.3 install disk, what happens when I start installing all the updates, including the Security Updates?
*Do I STOP at Security Update 2008-003 (PPC)?*
Because I DON'T want to reinstall the OS or my applications over again and AGAIN!
Apple, PLEASE, fix this Security Update!Hi again!
I'd have been asleep maybe a few hours ago, if not for
the late fireworks (from 3 PM until about 12AM) - so,
I am awake and a bit peeved at the scofflaws blasting
many illegal fireworks near my second home in the city.
(Normally, I live in a mostly quiet and beautiful mountain
area that is very Alaska; the largest city is not so nice.)
Back to your inquiry; if you start up in SafeBoot (hold
shift key down until you get Login screen and it says
SafeBoot; then login) and repair disk permissions
before installing the Combo 10.4.11 update, as a
standalone download file with the package on the
desktop; it should work.
Whether or not it would actually resolve the issue is
yet another matter. There could be an underlying
problem which may be better resolved if you could
make a bootable complete computer drive clone
of the hard disk drive contents, and either see if
a third party utility can scan and fix the hard disk
drive (if it is the problem) or you could get a new
one; and then -either way- clone back the system
onto a new or repaired hard disk drive.

The issues in kernel panics and their resolutions
are generally and more specifically covered in a
few steps that involve troubleshooting; not any
one may be the 'answer' yet the issue may be
solved after trying several things. If the kernel
panic is the real problem and not a symptom.

Notes on 'Journal-related Kernel Panics' in Tiger:

(The odds of needing this are slim; and I am not
familiar with the process or need to do this.)
Something to read through & consider carefully:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=kernelpanic+after+security+update+Tiger+10.4&btnG=GoogleSearch
{There may be some other hardware or ?? cause
behind the kernel panics and so it would be a
good idea to have a clone of your drive's content
on a bootable external FireWire enclosed HDD.
-I like mine, it has its own power supply and is
not reliant on the USB or FireWire to get power
from the computer; which could be faulty...}
Good luck & happy computing!
