Kernel Panic on Ancient G4 Tower
Kernel Panic on Ancient G4 Mirror Front Tower (PowerMac I believe). I'm trying to wipe my old G4 to sell, but moved some files I shouldn't have and restarted and now I'm stuck in a kernel panic. I've copied all my files over already so I'm okay with erasing the drive. I have no startup CD, but I do have a Snow Leopard CD that I bought for my iMac. I think I'm in an earlier version of OSX though (10.3 or earlier). I just want to be able to tell someone the drive is functional. Any ideas? Thanks!
The 10.6 installer disk is too new for any PowerMac.
Unfortunately kernel panics can be due to bad RAM, or bad peripherals, bad directory, or the wrong system installed.
Your best bet is to bring the machine into a Mac usergroup and ask if anyone has the installation disks for it.
The 10.4.6 retail installer if you can find it should help.

Kernel panic on MacPro medio 2010
Does anyone know have to read this crash rapport?
I have had a lot of them on my MacPro medio 2010.
The kernel panic appears in different situations but especiallly, when I am rendering 3D drawings in Vectorworks 2011
I suspect the RAM but I am not sure.
I checked at Apple Store what kind of RAM that fit and I could see that Apple recommended 1333MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM but when I checked what kind of RAM that was installed at my MacPro it was 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC.
Is this the cause?

Mac Pro 65lb tower uses Error Correcting Code (ECC) Memory. Eight additional check bits are stored with each 64-bit word in RAM memory, and when read back, single-bit errors are corrected on the fly and your Mac Pro keeps running. The errors are reflected in About this Mac > ( More Info) > Memory as modules whose status is other than "OK".
Double-bit errors that cannot be corrected cause an immediate halt with a Machine Check to avoid poisoning your data.
When you get all eight modules installed, it is common for your Mac Pro to back off maximum memory speed from 1333 to 1066. That is not a defect. -
QUadcore Mac pro kernel panic.
I have a Mac Pro tower. Quad core. 8Gb RAM. Have Leopard installed. Get a kernel panic on startup. Tried checking RAM, HD problems, rest PRAM, startup using x, or option or spacebar......nothing. Always get kernel panic immediately. Cannot boot up with external boot disk.
Help???.
LukeTry starting up using Shift, which does a minor Disk Repair and then boots up with minimal extensions.
If no success there, boot from the Installer/Utilities DVD, but do not Install. Answer only the "What Language" question and wait a moment for the MenuBar to be drawn. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and select your Hard Drive, look at its status, then REPAIR.
"A Mac that cannot boot from an appropriate Installer/Utilities DVD has a Hardware problem." -
After update Mac Pro boots to grey screen with Kernel Panic. Help please.
It would be great if someone can help me out. Yesterday I did a software update of iTunes and osx (it said to ease update to Lion) and now my Mac Pro tower (MacPro3,1) boots to a grey screen, kernel panic, telling me that I need to power down and restart my machine. I can boot into osx via the safe mode but unfortunately I don't have an install disk to repair the system disk. What are my options?
The machine appears to work in safe mode. I have tried resetting the PRAM. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
In safe mode, I get this error report.

and here is my system software overview once I have booted into osx in safe mode.
System Software Overview:
System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
Kernel Version: Darwin 10.8.0
Boot Volume: System
Boot Mode: Safe
Computer Name: qdise’s MacPro3,1
User Name: q2dise (dty61)
Secure Virtual Memory: Not Enabled
64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No
Time since boot: 16 minutesThere's no point in reinstalling the same driver. It hasn't changed. It's incompatible with the OS update. Contact the device manufacturer to see if there's a driver update. In the meantime, you should physically remove the device so the driver doesn't load. If you uninstall the driver and leave the device installed, that might also cause a panic.

Kernel Panics, Gray screen of death, and hard drives, oh my!
Last week, while performing multiple tasks on my G4, Safari froze up and completely locked up the entire computer. I rebooted by manually pushing the glowing power button the front of the tower. During reboot, I got the gray screen of death with the "you need to restart your macintosh... by holding down the power button for several seconds" message.
After a couple tries and getting that exact same gray screen of death, I started to worry about all my data.
I took both drives out of the G4 Quicksilver - one, a 500gb Barracuda Seagate (Master/bay 1), the other a 200gb Hitachi (slave/bay 2). I hooked them up to an older G4 and ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtility on both of them. The master drive had serious (>34%) fragmentation, which has since been cleaned up. The slave drive was relatively fine.
here's my current problem:
When I hook up:
1. Just the Master with no jumper pins, the drive runs fine, no problems, all settings and prefs are there, etc.
2. Just the Master with the correct pin settings, I get the kernel panic screen of death
3. The Master with correct pin settings and Slave with correct pin settings, kernel panic screen of death
4. If I swap the Master and Slave, and make the correct pin settings, the booting process starts and then I get a light gray screen with the "ghostbusters/do not enter" circle.
I put the original Slave drive in an external HD firewire enclosure, and it will mount on the desktop after the original Master drive has booted up - BUT - if I have the external drive powered up before I boot the Master, I get a gray screen with nothing on it - no message, nothing but grayscreen.
I've backed up my critical data, but would like to get these two drives back into their normal operating Master/Slave relationship that served them well for the last couple years.
Any help greatly appreciated.New wrinkle:
This morning trying at boot up, the Mac chime sounded, the gray screen w/the apple logo appeared, and then the machine sounded like either the main fan or one of the two drives spun down. Shortly thereafter, I got the prohibitory sign again.
I rebooted and then got something completely different: a black screen with a small blinking vertical rectangle in the top left of the screen, with nothing else happening for a long time, so I manually rebooted and tried to boot into safe mode.
Trying to boot into safe mode gave me the chime, the apple logo, and then the sound of either the fan or drive spinning down and leaving me at the prohibitory sign once again.
Finally I option-booted to the slave drive and upon startup, received the following crash report, which might as well be in Swahili as far as my being able to make sense of it:

Kernel Panic when using a new RAID 5 array
I recently set up a new Sans Digital 5 disk 7.2TB hardware RAID 5 array that's connected to a Sonnet Tempo-X eSATA 4+4 PCI-X card which has been updated to the latest drivers. The same card supports a number of JBOD enclosures that run as mirrored RAIDs under SoftRAID 4.0. My system is a 2.7Ghz DP Tower.
Upon trying to copy to the new RAID 5 volume I encountered a kernel panic and system freeze complete with wailing fans. After a few system restarts and a call to Sans Digital I tried to connect the RAID via USB upon the recommendation of tech support. Rather than causing a crash while copying I received an error message in the copy progress window that said that some files were locked and the process could not be completed and the RAID was no longer mounted in the finder.
I called Sans Digital back and they said it was probably a defective enclosure. I have just received a new one and have put that into service. All seemed fine until, when I was 30GB into a 900GB copy, the system froze. I have also tried to copy fewer files (400GB) and still get a Panic. When the RAID is idle there does not seem to be a problem. The last time the problem occurred the copy progress bar hung but the system did not fully lock up. The LEDs on the front panel of the RAID enclosure were flickering rapidly but no data was copying from my other drive. I turned off the RAID and was able to use my mouse again and restart my machine with a normal restart.
My system is running OS 10.5.8. When the RAID is off my computer runs fine.
Not sure what to try next. Any help would be appreciated - Thank you.Hi-
I'd be interested to know if Sonnet has any comments regarding the issue.
In Utilities/Console/Logs, there should be some indication of what is occurring when the crashes occur. -
Kernel Panics 10.5.6
Hello, I am having trouble with one of the macs where I work...I am not very familiar with Macs, so need some help. This system is getting kernel panics at seemingly random intervals throughout the day. Things I have tried, include wiping out the system and starting over with a fresh installation, disconnected all unnecessary devices (scanner, zip drive, camera)...the reload was done this past Friday, and the system did not have any issues until about 3:00 yesterday afternoon, so of course I was thinking the problem was cured after the reload. At that time, the following Kernel panic occurred:

After this occurred, we disabled system sleep, and the desktop picture changing from being done automatically, moved the mouse from being plugged in to the keyboard USB hub to be plugged directly to the computer tower. This morning hooked up the scanner and zip drive once again, which had been disconnected since Friday, a few minutes after doing so, a kernel panic occurred which is following:

Could anyone please help decipher what these logs are indicating? I had been thinking the problem was software related, but am not convinced completely, and being rather unfamiliar with the macs, I am definitely open to try anything that is suggested. Thank you in advance! So I'm hardly ever a poster on here...rather I am, but usually ASKING the questions and not answering them... but I was actually coming to follow up on any new news on the issue that WAS my nightmare...
Are you running 10.5.5?
If so, go back to 10.5.4.....I went like 2 weeks on the forums looking for help and got the same stuff you're getting now, and in my case none of it helped....I thought some of it did, given the delayed recurrence of kernel panics after I tried the various suggestions.
I ended up taking it to a service place..said wasn't covered by warranty because the issue was software, even though the culprit software turned out to be 10.5.5. the tech said somewhere on this very forum there is a thread started back last september on 10.5.5 and that the version was EXTREMELY Buggy with a large percentage of upgraders, thought not all. He ended up just installing with the disc (it had come with 10.5.4) and I've been completely back to normal since...no problems whatsoever...
He recommended skipping 10.5.5 and any combo's that use 10.5.5 (i believe 10.5.6 is such a combo, but am not 100% certain)...
I spoke also with apple care and the guy on the phone said he's not aware of the thread in the forums my $90 richer tech guy was talking about....he mentioned something about the download having some issues, not so much the software, but that the file was getting corrupted in download and installed with resulting glitches, some more sever than others for different people.
so anyway....that's my suggestion...just go back to 10.5.4 and wait until the next release... -
Kernel panics keep occurring on Mac Pro
Hi guys,
I've been having some difficulties with my Mac Pro recently. It is a Mid 2010 Mac Pro, with an 8-core processor and 8GB of RAM.
I keep getting kernel panics, to which the computer shuts down abruptly and restarts. Unforntunately I need this computer to work badly, because it is my source of income by recording music.
The problem first occurred when I plugged an ethernet cable in and disabled Airport, in order to prevent certain errors from popping up in Pro Tools, the recording software. So since this was the only variable that had changed, I changed it back, but it kept on failing.
In addition, I also repaired the disk permissions on my boot disk once right before it started happening.
I have tried lots of things, such as resetting the SMC, resetting NRAM and PVRAM, replacing directories of my internal disks using DiskWarrior, and also cleaning them up.
I also recall an error I got about my RAM memory not being in the right slots or something like that, right before the problems started... So I just switched them, and that error seems to be ok now. At least the Memory Utility tells me that the cards are in the right place.
And I also did a MemTest, which seemed to be ok as well...
I'll also post the report I got. I can't seem to make anything of it.
In any case, thank you guys in advance!!

If a single-bit error is detected, it is corrected on the fly, and eventually noted in some counters. Most double-bit errors are not correctable and cause the machine to halt on a Machine check, uncorrected error (exactly what you have).
It appears that when valid, the Physical Address will be reported, as well as the data (probably as read). If that is what is being presented, the address is:
IA32_MC8_ADDR(0x422): 0x0000 0001 0d92 d440
data is:
IA32_MC8_MISC(0x423): 0xe163495600000080
That address is more than 4GB (0x0000 0001 0000 0000)±1 and less than 6GB (0x0000 0001 8000 0000)±1, so I would expect it to be in the THIRD 2GB module. The way you have them installed, I think that would be DIMM5. -
Kernel Panics On Startup In Leopard
I have a Powermac G4 dual 1.0 Ghz tower. It has one hard drive with three partitions containing OS 10.5, 10.4, and 9.2 on them.
When I try to start up in 10.5 (which is the default), it kernel panics early in the startup process. There's a whole bunch of text onscreen in front of the apple logo which says something like:
System Failure: cpu=0 code=00000001 (Corrupt stack)
Latest crash info for cpu 0:
Exception state (sv=0x24065c80)
Then a bunch more numbers and so forth. The numbers I've posted above change each time but the structure of the error message is the same.
It also says: Backtrace terminated - frame not mapped or invalid
And at the bottom— BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
I tried booting the same machine into OS 10.4 from a different partition on the same hard drive and it worked without any problems EXCEPT that the system clock had been reset back to 1969 despite the machine having been plugged since the last time I used it. (I reset the clock.)
I also tried putting it into target disk mode and booting the laptop into 10.5 off it. That worked too, although I'm not sure if that means much since the laptop is a Macbook— OS 10.5 is a fat binary, but the Intel laptop wasn't actually using the same system files as the PowerPC desktop.
The very first time I tried to use the Powermac today, it shut down completely at some indeterminate point in the startup process— the kernel panic has occurred on all subsequent attempts to boot it into 10.5 thus far.
Incidentally, I have an eMac which I once booted into OS 10.5 using an external hard drive. It worked once but all subsequent efforts resulted in the same error. I didn't think much of it at the time since that machine didn't officially support OS 10.5 anyway.
Edited to add: I have a third-party USB 2.0 card installed which has caused occasional kernel panics when I use it, but I haven't done anything to the machine since the last time it worked properly.Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Does that boot without panic?
Do you have a 10.5 Install Disc to boot from?
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

Kernel panic analysis... is there a place I can upload?
To my fellow MAC users,
I am getting some kernel panics on a MAC G5 PowerPC tower that has been checked and re-checked, OS uninstalled and re-installed, hardware diagnostics passed, permissions checked and repaired... with no luck. Is there somewhere within this community or within the Apple Support site to send your log file to to analyze what is going on?
Thanks in advance!

I have never had a problem with sudden crashes with my mac or os x. In fact, that's why I preffered os x to windows and had decided to make mac my primary computer.
However, in the past few days, I have had 3 "kernel panics" which have crashed my computer. Being technologically illiterate, I googled my problem by copying the words from the error, and I found out it is the mac equivalent of the spontaneous "Blue screen of death" error in windows os. As much as I appreciate how the developers at apple have made the sudden crash error more aesthetically pleasing than its windows cousin, I would like it to stop.
Below, I have copied and pasted the readout of the errors (saved in Library/Logs/PanicReporter) in chronological order of occurance. Can anyone who is more tech savvy than I am tell me how to stop this from happening? I have not downloaded or installed any hardware or software lately.
The only change I made was bringing the mac pro tower home for the memorial day vacation (5 hour drive) to my parents house, and installing mac drivers for a belkin wireless network adapter. Any help would be appreciated.

System model name: MacPro1,1 (Mac-F4208DC8)Though I not very sure what is going on, I have this feeling that this has something to do with hardware (could be ram or disk). Another possibility is that some incompatible drivers (as you said) for your external hardware cause this when you connect these hardwares.
My first advice is that you repair your disk and permissions using disk utility.
Try to update all softwares and drivers for leopard. did you upgrade your OSX with leopard or clean/archive install it?
I could assure you that I have been using Mac OSX for more than one year and just had one or two kernal panic ever which is primary reason I am sticking to Mac forever.
With little experience with kernal panics, just another piece of information i could add is that Kernal panics are mostly because of illegal or corrupt memory address referencing, in short disk or memory issues.
Though I would agree Tiger is ten times more stable than leopard. I am sure things will be better with future 10.5 updates. -
Help! G3 freaking out/kernel panic/memory problems
Hi All,
I put some pc 133 512 mb memory in my G3 [which is actually pc 100, but supposedly should work fine] and then it kernel paniced.
Now it mostly seems to recognize memory in the slot closest to the screen. But only 64 and 32 mb sticks.
Plus, it only boots to OS9 which is on a seperate partition to OSX which is where it is supposed to go, even after setting OSX as the startup.
It also always wants the time adjusted- perhaps the battery is flat- I put it all aside for a month after it happened.
Could the 512 MB pc 133 have fried something? It seems very fragile.
Safe start just keeps rebooting, and X on startup is ignored and os 9 starts.
HELP!!!
Any ideas gratefully received,
WumpsdadHey annexit,
Yes I get a lot of donated computers so I have probably 80 or so sticks of RAM around here mostly PC 100 and 133 out of both PCs and Macs. I'm constantly sorting through them and marking them: "Works w/ iMac G3, Kernal panic in iMac G4, Works in tower G4 Sawtooth, not recognized...etc."
..old G3 iMac 500 Mhz with one 128 and one 256 PC133 (probably scammed from a G4 tower when I upgraded that),
Was planning to replace the 128 with a 512 PC100 - I saw the post from spudnuty
If you look here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac/G3450MHz_500MHz_600MHz700MHz
OWC sells a mix of PC 100 and 133 for that machine. They are very good at taking it back if it doesn't work.
Is your G4 Tower still on your net?
running panther, safari crashing and I can't print to the attached printer from the intel laptops wirelessly..
Hmm that should work. I use a MDD G4 Tower as my workhorse and am able to print to it no problem. It's running Leopard now however but I don't remember a problem when it was running Tiger.
Running Panther could be your problem. I was lucky when I bought an iMac G4 for $50 (bad hard drive) in the bottom of the box was a complete set of Tiger CD installers (rare).

MAC kernel panic after Mountain Lion install
Mac Kernel Panic has now started on my tower after i installed Moountain Lion.
I could not live with it and run my business so i had to get a new machine.
The tempertures are running the same on the new machine so it is NOT the temperture.
Apple support tried replacing one of my Nvita graphics cards to no avail.
Now they want to replace the second one.
Really??
What do you think???

If you don't get any kernel panics, then try connecting devices one at a time and test for a few days or until you get another KP.
I just read another post which stated there were several threads listing problems with the dual GT 120 cards and Mountain Lion. So, you might search out those if it doesn't turn out to be one of the attached devices. -
10.4.5 to 10.4.6; now Kernel Panic during boot
I upgraded my G4 tower last thursday to 10.4.6 and then shut it down for the weekend. Now eveytime I try to boot, I get a Kernel Panic either during the boot or within a few minutes / seconds of logging in.
Is this something that can be fixed with the Disk Utility? Could it be a hardware issue?
Any help would be appreciated
G4 Quicksilver 2002 Mac OS X (10.4.6)Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Kernel panics can be either hardware or hardware driver issues, or directory issues. If your data is backed up, you can try repairing the directory. If your data is not backed up, recovering from such a scenario can be difficult.

Sudden repetitive Kernel Panic | Mac Pro
Hi there
Today my Mac Pro has crashed repetitively while booting (during the grey and the blue screen) and after booting out of elementary finder actions (opening windows, moving windows). The crashs occur at the latest 10 minutes after a succesful boot!
What I've done so far (without success):
- Reset PRAM
- Reset SCM
- Booting from the MAC Pro Install CD (crashes also after some time)
Thanks for your ideas

FireWire Device: built-in_hub, Up to 800 Mb/secI started having the same type of kernel panics. The computer would run for a while then panic. Removed the hard drive and tested in a different computer. No Panics.
Mac Pro core 8 dou. Panic = IA32_MC3_STATUS(0x40d)
Okay, I used common sence and opened the door of the computer and placed an external fan pointing only at the hard drive logic board, vertical board in the computer. The fan was not able to cool any other part of the computer. The computer does not panic anymore. Used a thermal temperature (radio shack) point and click and found the Intel chip which controls the logic board to be operating over it normal temperature range.
Conclusion. The vertical I/O board requires replacement.
Local apple store does not understand that a computer must be burned in for testing thermal problems. Standard flow chart testing on the stores part. Will now have to bring the computer back to the store and demand a replacement board.
I am a hardware engineer and been designing logic boards for over 20 years. Apple care tech most likely have never seen a computer chip, let alone component level trouble shoot.
You may want to try the same test, Purchase a box fan from radio shack. aim the fan at the vertical logic board and let the fan run for 5 minutes then power up the computer and see if this fixes the problem, then have the board replaced.
