Kernel Panic on my iMac 10.7.2

Hi,
My iMac just experienced a kernel panic. Anybody know how to read logs? I would appreciate any help.
Here's what I did before it happened:
Closed all applications, Ejected my external HD, pulled out my iPhone's usb cable then shut down the iMac. Right before it was supposed to shut down, the kernel panic happened.
Here's the log:

Ok. I just uninstalled Sophos and downloaded Easyfind to check if there are any files left by Sophos and Samsung and while I was doing that, another kernel panic happened. Here's the log:

  • Gratuitous kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this

Ok, I know I probably shouldn't have installed Tiger on my G3 iMac so you don't need to remind me. However, it runs pretty good and I hardly ever even see the beachball spinning when I ask it to do something. What I am shocked, shocked by is the ridiculous amount of frequency that I end up with a kernel panic that gives me the 'gray screen' telling me I have to restart my Mac. I have been able to keep this down to a minimum by pointedly only running programs and commands one at a time with a good sized pause in between but even with that I am diappointed with how often it happens. Call me a heretic, but I think it would have killed Apple to stick with their classic OS framework rather than go to UNIX. I would like some tips about things I could do to minimize this occurence above what I already do. It really ***** to have had to reinstall Tiger about 3 or 4 times since I upgraded and have to change up the screen position, dock, desktop, mouse, screen saver, and reinstall all my programs after my iMac has croaked and finally accepted another reload of Tiger.

I'll ignore the major portion of your post which comes across as a rant and try to stick with the title: "kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this?"
Kernel panics are usually caused by bad or marginal RAM or RAM that isn't seated properly, or by buggy or damaged software or drivers. In the past, problems with marginal RAM for Macs has shown up when people upgraded to new versions of the OS -- which might fit your situation.
Although your CPU is slow, you have lots of RAM, so Tiger should run OK, if the RAM is not defective. You don't mention how much free space you have on your hard drive. Typically you're going to need at least 5 Gig free to give Tiger breathing room.
Running a system maintenance utility like Yasu would probably also be beneficial:
    http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/
What does the hardware test for your Mac say about your system? This might help us determine if there is a hardware cause for the kernel panics.

  • Kernel panic on my iMac G4 flat panel OSX 10.3--help!

    Hello,
I have an iMac with OSX Panther 10.3. This afternoon I decided to update a lot of the software that was on the computer (used the Software Update on the computer preferences), and also downloaded a bunch of free software that looked useful. (I don't always do the updates because I have a slow dial-up connection at home, but this weekend I brought my home computer to a friend's office with a faster connection so I could do this.) Apparently that was a BIG mistake. I left for a while, came back and discovered that not all of the Mac OSX update had been installed, and when I clicked on something (could have just been any place--I don't know), I got what I now know is a KERNAL PANIC. I repeatedly got the black drop-down screen that has a multilingual message to restart the computer.
I read some responses to questions about this on a Mac forum and another one (www.mac-help, including the Dr. Smoke list of things to do, and tried to follow some of the suggestions. I tried to reboot the computer several times, using my OSX 10.3 Install Disk (didn't work) and then my original iMac OSX Install Disk. I could get the Disk Utility to open, eventually, and two hard disk icons appeared: 38.16 GB Maxtor and 743.29 MB HL- . (The name of my hard drive had been Scribe, so this is not the same hard drive name obviously.)
I chose the hard drive called 38.16 GB Maxtor, chose First Aid, and clicked on Verify. I got this list:
    Verifying disk "Macintosh HD"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extentes Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking volume bitmap.
[in red] Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Checking volume information.
[in red] Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 6432952 instead of 6432857)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
    Verify completed.
I could not Verify the hard drive icon labelled 743.29 MB HL-
I tried to install OS X but got a message that I couldn't install older software on top of the newer software (presumably OS X 10.3 that I had on the computer already?). I saw a message on a forum saying to go to Partition on the Disk Utility and to choose the smallest partition. (This is really foreign territory to me--I'm not very computer-savvy although I use mine a lot.) There was no such information and the windows were sort of greyed-out.
I tried to use the OS X 10.3 Install Disk again, but got the Kernel Panic message (same one).
Now what? Have I lost all of what I had on my computer (which was a great deal, including some registered software (Sibelius 3))? Can I retrieve it? How can I get my computer to work again?
By the way, if I go to the Apple icon and drop the menu down, all of the items are greyed-out, and I can't even see "About This Mac."
Please help, and please don't assume that I know anything beyond basic usage.
    Thanks so much!
    yours in a panic,
    Kirinphoebe

Well, with a PPC Mac you can upgrade as far as Firefox 3.6.19 if you upgrade from Tiger OSX 10.3.9 to Leopard OSX 10.5, but Firefox doesn't support PPC architecture in the latest Firefox 4, 5, and 6.0 versions.
    For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0 & 5.0, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
But, you still need to carefully investigate if your hardware specs are sufficient for either Firefox 3.6.19 or for 10-4Fox.

  • Major Problem with kernel panic on new iMac: HELP!

My housemates 24" core 2 duo imac kernel panicked when playing Call of duty 2 (side question: if anyone has any reason why it keeps freezing and the screen getting full of horizontal lines would love to hear from you)
Now I can not start the computer. Whenever I restart, it plays the chime, but then has another kernel panic. Spoke to apple.. i reset the pram.. and then it came back.. ive zero data deleted my hardrive then re-installed osx.. and it is still doing it!! (i ran hardware tests and said everything was working fine..)
The graphics card is nvidia 7600GT
Also.. When starting up the imac, just after the apple logo white screen turns to the desktop, the screen flashes a lime green for a split second.. i know that shouldnt happen!
It wont let me send a report to apple wen i get a window saying "imac shut down unexpectantly".. when the button clicks.. no report comes up.
The operating is a 24" 2.16 Ghz iMac intel 2 core duo, 1GB RAM!
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers.

I had the same problems. New iMac 24" arrived last week (a replacement because the first one had a faulty screen and keyboard). Set it up at the weekend and it seemed fine for 48 hours until I started watching a DVD on Christmas Day. About 2 minutes into the DVD I got a kernel panic, then the computer would not restart. I left it about an hour and tried again. It started successfully, but had another kernel panic when I opened the Dashboard. Again, it failed to restart. I think that something is overheating whenever the computer tries to do any 'work' and then it crashes. I too got panics when trying to boot from the installation disc. Spoke to customer support over the phone and nothing we tried worked, so I've had to send back for another replacement system.

  • Kernel Panic causing my iMac to restart

    iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB
Disk Space 406.5 GB free of 2 TB
All Apps are up to date
    OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1 (14B25)
Any idea what is causing this problem and how to fix it? I would greatly appreciate any help.
In the past few weeks my iMac has started to periodically restart on its own. It happens multiple times a day, today it is happening just 15 minutes apart. If I happen to be viewing a video at the time, it will pause then I will hear a tick, tick, tick, tick, tick and then it restarts. The report says it is a Kernel Panic.
I researched "Kernel Panic" and what to do to diagnose the problem, and I have done the following:
    I have reset my SMC
    I have reset my PRAM
I ran Disk Utility and both the Disk and Permissions are fine.
I ran DriveGenius and Repair, Fix Permissions, Physical Check, and Consistency Check all said all is good.
I restarted in Safe Mode (in my account, not a guest account) and it still restarted on its own.
I first noticed this problem when running: (but now it happens even if these 2 Apps are closed)
    Adobe Creative Cloud
PhotoSweeper with 100GB or more of photos.
I have been going through my 270 GB of photos to find and delete duplicates, so it has been labor intensive for my computer.
Can Creative Cloud, which I just installed in mid-December be the problem? On Adobe boards, Adobe is adamant that it cannot be an App issue, but has to be a System or Hardware issue.
When I open Photoshop I get the following message:
"3D features and some filters (Flame/Tree/Picture Frame) require a minimum of 512MB of vRAM.
Photoshop has detected less than that on your system."
    My Graphics Card Setup is:

To me, it looks like your disk may have some corruption, or the file system (or directory) may have some corruption.
I would suggest booting to the recovery partition and running Disk Utility and seeing if it finds some things to repair. This might also be a job for DiskWarrior. As to why this would occur in the first place, I can't say for sure, it's possible there are some physical issues going on with the hard drive.
If you check the console, do the words "i/o error" appear anywhere? If so, it's 99% likely your drive is failing.

  • Multiple kernel panics in Lion (iMac 27")

    Hello,
I know this problem has already been mentioned by several people here but not with my combination of computer/applications in use.
I have a 27" iMac from October 2010. Before upgrading to Lion I NEVER had any problems, especially not kernel panics. After upgrading to Lion I started have constant wifi droppings and after a few days kernel panics. Since Apple hasn't addressed that problem (the 10.7.1 update didn't solve anything), I tried a clean install, disabling wifi and working with ethernet while I prepared everything (1 To is a lot of data to save).
This didn't do any good unfortunately. Just now I had two kernel panics in a row while back on the wifi connection.
Here is the first kernel message (the second is much longer)

    Thanks for taking an interest.
This is the full report on the first panic, it did strike me as short. But then again it is possible that I didn't scroll down properly. In any case, here is the second panic report, which should be related to the same problem:

The EyeTV was plugged in at the time but I haven't reinstalled the software yet.
I never thought of the MyBook... if it's involved that would be a problem since my Time Machine's on there.
I'll say again that these panic have only ever occured when the wifi was on.

  • Booting from DW4.0 CD = Kernel Panic on my iMac G5, but not my Desktop DPG5

    Hi,
I am having a problem. Very strange.
I tried to start up my iMac G5 using the internal SuperDrive booting from the Alsoft DiskWarrior CD that is the latest v4.0 and supposed to be compatible. Instead of booting, I get a panic screen. I photographed it if anyone could decipher it? Anyway, after 14 back and forth e-mails with Alsoft, the makers of Disk Warrior, and much extensive testing, we concluded...
    1) their DW4.0 Boot CD should work but doesn't on the iMac G5
    2) it's got to be the SuperDrive that is at fault.
I was able to use the same CD in my desktop G5 computer. I was able to burn a copy of it and boot from the copy also in my Desktop Mac.
When I try to boot from the iMac Superdrive - kernel panic and no go with all of these CDs.
What do I do now? I've got AppleCare on this computer?
    Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, and so long for now, TOM

If you can boot your computer using the OS X disc, then then chances are your computer itself is fine (good news!).
I'd lean on Alsoft a little more to send you a replacement. You have a defective product, and you have demonstrated that your computer's DVD drive is, in all likelihood, functioning properly. Call Alsoft, and if the assistant won't help you, ask to speak to someone senior, who hopefully knows their job a little better.
If you are in the U.K., you can draw attention to The Sale of Goods Act 1979 section 48b subsection 2 "If the buyer requires the seller to repair or replace the goods, the seller must a) repair or, as the case may be, replace the goods within a reasonable time but without causing significant inconvenience to the buyer; b) bear any necessary costs in doing so..." (Source: Blackstone's statue book on Contract, Tort & Restitution).
If not from the U.K., I'm sure a little digging will find something of similar use.

That means you still have 30 days of free technical support through Apple.  Call AppleCare directly and take advantage of the service of being able to talk and troubleshoot with Apple trained employees.

  • Have 2006 24 inch imac running 10.75 Lion os having repeat kernel panic attacks 2006 imac

I have a 2006 imac (24 Inch) using Lin 10.75 OS.  It keeps having kernel panic attacks and needs to shut down.  It is also very unstable and freezes maore and more often.  Any suggestions?

Nada. And yes it displays the correct resolution of 1920 x 1200. And yeah pretty much what I'd call cosmetic too but it just bothers me after a while. Yep I'm one of those people lol my computer runs perfectly fine but I still find something wrong but it's just wrong. System Profiler is not supposed to be incorrect. But just seeing if I'm the only one with this problem or if just the 7600 GT iMacs have this error.

  • Kernel Panic - causing my iMac to crash every time i use it - it is not clear what is causing this issue - i am on the lastest version of Mountain Lion

Hi, this is driving me mad, any help in identifying a fix would be so great!
I seem to get this all the time since i upgraded to OS X Lion, am now on Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) and the problem is persisting - my PC hard ware is: 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, the Mac has 4GB of memory (667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM), it is using a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB Graphics card.
The result is a kernel panic, leading to the system crashing and waiting for a remote debugger connection. I have attached the report below.
I should mention that post the Iion upgrade, i have taken my PC to the Genius bar and they have re-installed the OS - however it has not fixed the problem, despite the mac guys thinking it had.
    Thanks,
         Richard

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo nvram boot-args=""
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.

    HI,
Go here for help to Resolving Kernel Panics
To eject the disc, try starting up while holding down the mouse. If that doesn't help, startup while holding down the Eject key ⏏
Try starting up while holding down the Option key which should prompt the Startup Manager window. Select MacintosHD 10.x.x

  • Repeated kernel panic/restarts on iMac

I recently got my quad i5 27" iMac back from having the hard drive replaced under the recall.  I restored my files via time machine and now today my machine started restarting at random intervals.  I never had issues like this before.
I installed 16gb of ram, but I've never had issues with ram before (I purchased the correct kind, etc).
Any help deciphering this would be greatly appreciated.
Here is my latest error report:

    Edward,
    When you uninstalled
    com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer          1.7
    com.avatron.AVExVideo          1.7
Exactly what method did you follow to uninstall. Please be descriptive, remember we aren't there to see what you do or what you are doing.
My guess is you did not uninstall correctly and left trace amounts of these apps behind. You also haven't restarted in Safe Mode to reset some of the caches.

  • Kernel Panics on 17" iMac w/iSight

This post may be a little premature as I'm visiting the iMac user next week, but I'd like to get some advice nonetheless.
A teenage family member recently received the above mentioned iMac as a gift. Within two days of use, she said that the computer would not wake from sleep. I told her (over the phone) to hold the power button for a couple seconds and do a hard re-boot. That was the end of that problem.
Now she's getting kernal panics (at least I think they are kernal panics - she says the screen is telling her to restart) while using the Internet. Like I would assume is the case for a lot of teenage iMac users, she says the main applications she uses are Safari, Windows Messenger, Photobooth and is learning some of the others. Her freezes seem to occur during Internet or messenger use.
So, I had her "repair permissions" in disk utility and to make sure her Mac was up-to-date with the latest software and to see how the computer responded.
I'm wondering if specific internet use is causing the problem. She shares bandwith with two Windows-using brothers in the house - one of which I know is an avid on-line gamer. Is there anything else that might be causing kernal panics that I'm not thinking of?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for your suggestions. Here's an update. Sure enough, my family member's iMac is pretty fouled up. Here is what I did:
    1. Verified and Repaired permissions several times
    2. Ran an Extended Hardware Test: NO PROBLEMS FOUND (got another kernal panic within minutes of running the test. Earlier in the day I wasn't even able to get the Install Disk 1 in the drive the iMac was crashing so much.)
    3. Put Install Disk in again to attempt "zero-ing" out the drive. Got a most cryptic kernal panic message. It had a bunch of numbers and then said "KERNAL PANIC: WE ARE ALL WAITING HERE".
This freaked me out enough to make me shut down the computer one more time and pull the plug-insisting that it's time to take the iMac down to the local Genius Bar.
The ONLY software installed on this machine was the AOL AIM client, which I think might be conflicting with the built-in iChat??? But that's the only software. Wireless connection. NO OTHER files with the exception of some Photobooth pictures reside on the computer. NOTHING ELSE.
I'm stumped and a little unnerved by that kernal panic. Ideas?

  • Having problems with Kernel Panic screen on iMac 17" 1.83

I have this iMac that was running fine the we had a power surge and the computer started crashing with the Grey Screen with the darker block in the center that said I need to restart the computer. Finally it would not even come up with out crashing. I removed the hard drive to use on my Mac Pro to retrieve the files and it took forever but I finally go them. Then no matter what I could not reformat the hard-drive even though SMART said it was okay. So I replaced the hard drive, installed Snow Leopard and all the updates. Everything ran fine for a day then started then it started crashing again. i finally erased the harddrive from my mac pro by firewire and the iMac was in transfer mode. But now I can not get Leopard to install from the DVD. It shows the errors below:

I don't know that system profiler really tests RAM. I don't know about your model but some Macs come with an Apple Hardware Test disc for that kind of thing. There's also RAM testing utilities such as Memtest and Ramber. From reading I get the impression testing for bad RAM can be finicky and requires long runs. Sometimes it is easiest by removing chips and seeing how things run in different configurations.

Good job on getting it all working again.
