Hard to say. You did upgrade the machine to 10.5.2 so it's possible your upgrade has malfunctioned. It could also be a hardware problem. I would insert the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended diagnostics. If any errors are reported be sure to note them down, then call AppleCare or your local Apple retailer. If no errors are reported run the extended diagnostics several times. Sometimes it takes a while for the error to occur.
If no hardware errors are reported then it may be a software related problem. In this case you should first repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now download the 10.5.2 Combo Updater and reinstall it. You should also install the Leopard Graphics Update if you haven't already.
If the above doesn't resolve your problem then you should try an Archive and Install to reinstall OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Daily Kernel Panics on new Mac Pro
Hi,
My new Mac Pro recently started having kernel panics a couple of times a day. I haven't been able to determine what I'm doing when the panics happen. Some times it seems iTunes related and there's a long "Checking iTunes Library" once I restart the computer and start iTunes. The log file looks like this:

Kernel panic after cloning Mac Pro to iBook G4
Oops! For years I've "synchronized" my iBook to my G4-DP via CCC or SuperDuper. That just bit me, when I tried that from new Mac Pro. The kernel panic message is:
panic (...): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook6,5"
What is the smart way to recover from this mistake? Thanks John.
And to avoid this in the future, I've just scripted a new SuperDuper method to "clone" the Mac Pro to the iBook to avoid the Power PC/Intel conflict.
My - this feels much like the grief we have xferring the environment from one PC to another -
New Mac Pro not really working
I just got my new Mac Pro in and I'm having some problems. I've had to do a hard reboot 3 times over the last 4 days, I get the SBBOD very frequently, and Spotlight doesn't seem to be working.
My biggest issue with spotlight now is I can't get one of my internal drives to index. It's a 500 gb seagate drive that I took out of a G5 and put right into my MP. Is that a problem? I know I can't take a startup disk from a PPC machine to an Intel machine but this is just for storage. I've downloaded Spotless and deleted all my spotlight folders and started from scratch. I indexed one drive at a time and found this one drive always hangs. I've let it run overnight now twice and it never finishes. I came in this morning and it still says indexing (won't allow me to search) and it says it has -2147483648 hours remaining and the status bar is actually showing less progress then when I left it last night, which sounds weird but I'm sure of it. Any ideas?
Message was edited by: Spencer PowellHave you booted from a good backup system you can use for emergencies and tried repairing your drive? If you don't have Disk Warrior (or something more than just Apple First Aid) I would.
In trying to salvage files I usually try to trash the most recent stuff added that are just temp or not needed, and delete what I have safely copied over.
Think of peeling an onion. Undo each layer. Repair the directory.
Disk Warrior has Rebuild directory, and if you hold down OPTION when you click on rebuild, it offers you choice to scavenge a drive that is more severely corrupt.
When it freezes, be sure to do a Safe Boot and insure you aren't creating new directory problems on your alternate drive. And don't boot or use your problem drive. Which is why you always want to have a FW or alternate boot drive. And if you don't, then install just OS X plus updates on it first so you do. -
HDCP in the new Mac Pro - not allowed to watch my paid for TV shows?
My new Mac Pro won't let me play back my iTunes TV Shows as my 30" Cinema Display doesn't support HDCP. iTunes' suggestion of just connecting a HDCP compliant monitor isn't even funny: Don't have one, not getting one. Is this a bug, and if so, is there any way around it? Or is Apple trying to increase their 24" sales by denying people access to their already paid for content?
Thimic
It's not your computer.
I also have a new MacPro and it also will not play my library of HD movies and TV. The only solution I received from Apple was to change the default play HD to SD which defeats the purpose.
What is annoying is that Apple puts no warnings on iTunes or none that I can find.
That they could not tell me if any Apple display or other make would enable me to watch HD
So I am compelled to use my credit card to reclaim all the HD purchases and if the MacPro cannot produce HD content then I I'll use them to seek recompense.
I love Apple products but I do not like the lazy or arrogant get lost behavior. Finding a solution should be on the iTunes site.
And there's should be clear information on Apple displays... which there is not... and Apple Stores simply do not know. Back to 1997 "Never heard of that sir!"
My HP Blackbird plays HD.
Thimic good luck. -
New Mac Pro not shipping until Feb 13 !!!?
I just ordered a new Mac Pro this morning with the default options plus a Nvidia 8800 graphics card. My order status says it will ship by Feb. 13 to avive by Feb. 14 (I used overnight shipping). I understand that making a change can delay an order a bit but wow that is quite a delay. Anyone think it will ship early? I've never ordered from the online apple store and I'm not sure what to expect. I'm hoping that they are just being very conservative, if not this is going to be a long 5 weeks of waiting
Thanks.I just cancelled my order - I don't want to wait up to 5 weeks for my new Mac Pro.
I re-ordered with the stock configuration and also ordered a separate Apple supplied Nvidia 8800 GT which is now on the US site for $350 - this will ship later when available. I called Apple and they checked with an engineer and told me the 8800 won't work concurrently with the stock ATI card but that it will run with two 8800.
SLI in Bootcamp would be nice but I doubt two 8800s will support it. Has anyone heard of anyone getting SLI in a Mac Pro (OSX or Bootcamp)? I'm going to try the Nvidia and ATI together because I want to run 2 monitors with an optional TV for the occasional Front Row use. I'll keep this thread updated and let everyone know if it works - I don't always trust the info from any technical support department.
Does anyone know if two GPUs (i.e. two 8800s) will give a performance boost over one card in OSX with apps like Final Cut Studio 2? -
Kernel panics on my mac pro for almost a year- I am at my wit's end
So I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro. 12 Core, initially 16GB of Ram (Recently upgraded to 24GB of RAM). Starting in January of 2012 my machine running Snow Leopard started to go to sleep and not wake up. This would happen every few days but then would increase in frequency. I scoured the boards for an answer but couldn't find one so I ended up taking teh machine to the local Apple Store. They found nothing wrong with the machine but installed a clean copy of Snow Leopard and that seemed to help for a while. The problem persisted. I would reset PRAM and try different approaches in boards on line including repariing permissoins etc. Nothing worked for long. Desperate I tried upgrading to Lion but the problem persisted. I took the machine back to the apple store (same location) and they suggested that carbonite was causing the problem. I did a fresh install of Mountain lion this time, and then slowly added applications back one at a time to see if the problem was truly application based. I never re installed carbonite. I don't believe the problem is application based because I have a 2010 Mac Pro that has the identical software setup ( I freelance and when I work off site I use the laptop) and have never had an issue with any kernel panics. Additionally I have a 2008 Mac pro with the exact same setup and no issues there either. Before long the problem re-appeared but now with Lion and Mountain lion the machine restarts and I get a message that the machine was forced to re-start after an issue. I called Apple support and got a very nice guy name Sean Thorpe who promised to help me. I sent them crash logs, he sent me some applications to install or checks to run so that he could send my crash logs to the engineering department to debug. Nothing. no one has solved this problem. Fed up I demanded a new machine. I have apple care so I am covered but they refused. Sean then suggested that I remove all of my drives and then partition the boot drive and install a clean copy of Mountain lion and see if the problem continues. I did that. Within 24 hours the machine crashed again. It was running off the partition and I didn't install a single application. I don't know that much but the problem has to be hardware. It two visits to the apple store and a detailed study of crash logs by apple's engineers can't figure it out I figure that I just got a lemon. I am fed up. I spent a lot of money on this machine and it isn't dependenable. I have owned at least four other macs and have loved every one of them and every one has been a great machine.
I am at my whit's end and considering trying something desparate like trying to contact someone who runs customer service or Tim Cook himself. I don't have any idea how I can get that contact information nor do I actually think it will get me anywhere so I am turning to this community for one last attempt to solve what ever is going on with my machineThank you for you swift reply

Kernel Panics-Brand New Mac Mini
I am experiencing ongoing Kernel Panics on a new Mac Mini (purchased in July 2012). Running Mountain Lion, 8 gig RAM (Apple Branded). What I've tried to fix it:
Took to Apple Store, hardware test: Passed
Reinstall of Mountain Lion
Uninstalled various 3rd party software including: LogMeIn, PS3 Media Server, Fuse, NTFS+ (don't recall exact name), DVD Fab.
Disconnected all external devices including External Hard Drives, DVD Drives, cameras etc.
They keep coming, pretty much daily (often 2 or 3 a day).
Here is my latest log:

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Big ole' me too here. Tried on 3 different Mac minis. First 2 were originally Mac mini servers that were reformatted and Base OSX 10.8.2 installed, no server. Lots of automatic reboots. Only app added was FM Server. These were installed from scratch, no user migration, no other apps installed. Last Mac mini was a straight non-server, brand new off the shelf, only FMServer installed (and FM Pro - not running). Getting reboots from kernel panic several times a day. All these Mac minis had SSD drives. I have Time Machine running, but its set to ignore the FM Server folder. FMS is set to back-up the DBs to a FW800 connected drive. Apple Display connected via Thunderbolt -not sure any of this matters. (Also repaired permissions, ran fsck, Safe Boot, etc...).
Don't know much about tracing the reason for a kernel panic but saw this near the top:

It's been happening for months, been banging my head aginast the wall thinking it was something I've done... -
Diagnosing cause of kernel panic on a Mac Pro
I've got an early 2009 Mac Pro with the following specs:
2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
OS X 10.8.1
Problem is, at random times, my Mac would just shut down and then restart after I clicked through the "gray your Mac shut down without telling you because it's selfish" warning screen.
I took it to a local computer shop and they couldn't really tell, and suggested I do a clean install of Mountain Lion. I did that, got everything back on from Time Machine (just Documents and Music, no Libraries per the technician's instructions), and then last night it did it again. Restarted while I was working on a web site. No notice.
I wondered if someone could help me diagnose the problem or problems(s), since I can't make ANY sense of the sytem report.
Here is the complete system report when the panic occurred. Thanks for ANY help at all you can provide.

Any advice? I see the LogMeInSoundDriver is in the list, but I completely uninstalled it, so I'm not sure what that's referring to.
Thanks!

Hi guys,
First of all let me say hello to everyone, this is my first post in here. I kindly ask your help before sending my MP to apple support. I have to tell you as many other somewhere I installed third party ram on my machine from OWC 4x2gb. But I suspected that was a faulty ram module I tried and reinstall apple original ram, and unfortunately the problem had shown up again. Let me post here my last four KP (consider the last one happened with original ram, so this should avoid considering this a ram problem):
1st one:

Can you please help me to understand as I am a bit dummy in understanding console language. And there will surely be someone here who see what is the problem depending on.
Thank you very much and sorry for my long post.
Kind regards

Yes, as those links mention:
remove any and all USB and FW cables and devices, anything you've added.
Good advice
There was no reason and not much cause to dump the full system profile and extensions. People's eyes will just "glaze over" at the length and looking for the proverbial needle-in-a-haystack.
Wrong... I found this thread because they did post all that detail. Because I googled "Syndrome: 0x6ed2cef7" and found it, which I would not have if they had not posted that there.
The first thing to do with new RAM is test just it; and to run Apple Hardware Test, including Memtest (256MB per terminal window, to use all of it, then let it run for 10 cycles).
They already did RAM tests and their RAM is perfect. See:
http://forums.macrumors.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=8624426
The best way to post, is look for similar posts and threads, then include What you did or changed before it first happens. So it happened before you bought OWC, I would have removed original RAM and tried with just OWC.
How are they supposed to find similar threads if they don't post the details because they are afraid people's eyes will "glaze over"... those people need to drink RockStar or something if they find their eyes "glaze over" when the brain is required to think. ;p
Those tutorials should help, not just with kernel panics.
This is a serious issue. I'm having it too. i think it has to do with using a second optical drive and possible the power being drawn by that. -
Kernel Panics (late 2013 Mac Pro)
late 2013 MacPro
32 GB memory
3.5GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
500g Flash Storage
Mavericks 10.9.4
Pro tools 11 installed
I've been experiencing kernel panics for a few weeks now. Since this is my business computer (audio recording/mixing Pro Tools 11), I need a quick solution. I've already tried apple phone support, Avid phone support and izotope (thought it was a Pro Tools 3rd party plug in problem, but it's still restarting after deleting the plug-in). I've even tried erasing the hard drive and re-installing the OS. Apple claims it's not a hardware problem and that it's a Pro Tools issue. But, Avid hasn't found any problems (besides suggesting that it may be the plug in company, izotope..specifically ozone 5). Any help is much appreciated!

New Mac Pro and Old G4 Speakers
Well, I go out and buy a new mac pro(not the laptop but the desktop). I try to hook up my old G4 screen and it doesn't work. I bought a new screen becasue the guys at the store told me there was no way to adapt the screen for the new computer. Well, I go to hook up my old (old being 2 years) clear plastic round speakers and they don't fit in the hole. It is so frustrating that it seems I have to buy ALL new stuff. Does anyone know of an adapter I could use so I can hook up these speakers so I don't have to go out and spend another $100 on something I already have?

BRAND NEW Mac Pro won't boot from Leopard DVD, kernel panics!
I just received my brand new Mac Pro today. It's a BTO machine with the upgrade to the NVIDIA 8800GT, a second optical drive and a Mac OS X Server license. The system has Mac OS X server installed on the default 320GB drive. I decided to use the server license as a virtual machine running in Leopard client. So, I installed 2 new 500GB Seagate 7200.11 (Retail) drives in the machine, zeroed them out in prep for installing Leopard client.
At this point, I pop in a freshly-purchased retail copy of the Leopard DVD and restart. When I try to boot from the DVD and install Leopard to one of the new Seagate drives, I get kernel panics - need to restart the machine. Also tried booting from the Mac OS X Server DVD and this too only caused kernel panics. The DVD's read perfectly from within Mac OS X Server and boot from hard disks is flawless.
I spent an hour on the phone with a level 2 tech at Apple - Tried swapping out the RAM and moving around the DIMMS to no avail. I am at a loss to what this could be. Seems to be a hardware issue and the tech thought it was likely a problem with one of the memory risers but couldn't send replacements. Anyone else with a similar issue?
This is my first Mac and it looks like this Mac Pro is going back for an exchange and I'll have to wait yet another 10-12 days for a replacement to arrive. Bummer.
Am I missing something simple here? Does this seem to be a hardware issue?
If anyone has any ideas before I ship this one back, please write!!!New Mac Pros will not install the Leopard retail disc. They will only install the Leopard disc which shipped with them labeled Mac Pro. That has always been true. Macs can only boot the system that ships on DVD in the box that came with them, and newer retail releases. They can never boot from an older retail release than what shipped in the box.

So.... my very preliminary testing with our new Mac Pro using the plugin I use most (filmconvert -FC) anyway, shows that Premiere CC needs more optimization for the dual GPUs. In fact, I'd say the CPU utilization is not up to snuff either.
I know FC only uses one GPU presently from the developer. That will change. In the meantime, using a couple of typical projects with that plugin as an example, I'm only seeing 25-45% speed up in renders over our maxed out iMac (late 2012, 27") exporting the same project. That's significant of course but not the 100%+ one would think we would be seeing at the least given the MacPro config of 8 cores and dual D700s. Premiere Pro CC seems in fact to never maximize CPU (never mind GPUs). I have yet, in my very limited testing, see it "pin the meters" like I did on the iMac.
Of course that's just testing now two short (under 5 min) projects, and it depends on what one is doing. Some stuff is much, much faster like Red Giant's Denoiser II or Warp Stabilizer VFX. The improvement there can be 3-4x faster anecdotally. I used to avoid them for speed reasons unless absolutely needed a lot of the time but now they are fast enough to rely on quickly. Other stuff unrelated top PPro CC like DxO PRIME noise removal on RAW stills is much faster too, as is Photoshop CC. Some effects like blur, sharpening, resize there are nearly instant now even on giga pixel files in Photoshop CC.
And of course FCPX is much faster on it but I hate the whole editing paradigm. The timeline is just horrid on it; simple things like replacing a word in someone's dialogue is a multi click, multistep process that is nearly instant in Premiere and most every other NLE. Just to try to see your whole timeline is a chore, to see what your edits and sound are in detail are problematic, trying to keep things in sync is a chore, and you can't even zoom your timeline window to full screen! If anybody has edited for any amount of time, I do not understand how they use FCP X. If they start with that program, for example if they are young, then that is a different beast.
I'm sure Adobe will improve over time. They have to to stay competitive. In the meantime I'll take my 45%... but I wish I saw much more improvement given the cost and hardware differential. Unfortiunately, for now, the mainstream reviews I have seen regarding PPro performance on this machine were right. That statement about 4k/5k in Premiere CC with the nMP is false, insofar as performance goes.
I just tested 5K Red raw files just dragged into Premiere Pro CC (latest version). I expected this to be slow, given my HD experience. However, on my 8 core/D700, I can play 1/2 just fine, full speed. And I even can also do that with a very streneous plugin/filter attached - FilmConvert (in OpenCL mode), also at 1/2 which is quite impressive. I can even add a bunch of other Premiere filters and SG looks and it still stays at full speed at 1/2.
Ironically, this is quite faster than FCPX which can't seem to play back 5K at all with that filter attached (it doesn't stutter, but it's not smooth... low resolution at "best performace" and reduced frame rate). Even if I remove all filters FCPX plays back Red 4k (again not transcoded) about the same as CC at 1/2, but with a seemingly lower resolution to keep it smooth. It's a head scratcher. It's like Adobe's Red handling is much better coded than Apple's in this case.
Or... it has to be attrituable to that particular plugin (other FCPX motion-based plugins don't suffer the same fate and are fast). But either way, filter or no, Premiere Pro CC is definitely and sharper looking at 1/2 when cutting Red 4k/5k with no transcode, playback in real time, than FCPX which needs to bump it down to what looks like a 1/4 or less rez to keep it smooth. So I have no idea what is going on.
This experience is the opposite with HD, where FCPX is significantly faster (using the same filters/plugin, using C300 Canon XF for HD and 4 and 5K RedRaw alternatively). Premiere seems slower in HD than FCPX by a good amount in HD and signficantly faster with Redraw 4k. Go figure. -
New Mac Pro & PP CC 2014 "Not Responding" when exporting....
OK, this is a weird issue.
Short Version:
Project exports fine on PC
Premiere Pro CC 2014 stops responding on new Mac Pro just after clicking "Queue"
Premiere Pro CC 2014 renders the sequence fine when I click on "Export"
Details:
I have a week old 4 core, 12 Gig ram, Mac Pro running OSX 10.9.4 with the latest CC 2014 installed 1 week ago.
I have a sequence (the content) with Lumetri, Ultra Key, Track Matte and Lumetri (warm). This sequence is nested into an other sequence (holds the watermark titles and branding)
The project exports and renders fine on my 5 year old i7 pc.
However on my new MacPro every time I go to export that sequence by clicking on "Queue" AME CC 2014 starts and Premiere locks up. Activity monitor show Premiere as "Not Responding"
I force quit Premiere to exit.
I don't have this issue with other video projects. I have disabled OpenCL in Premiere and AME with no different outcome.
I can export the nested sequence by it self with out any issues. If I remove the nested sequence, the main sequence exports just fine.
I have also checked and repaired disk permissions - no difference.
However, If I click on "Export" in Premiere it starts to render and Premiere Pro does not lock up.
It looks like an issue with PP handing off to AME.
How can I troubleshoot this? I need to queue up 200+ videos to render in the next month....That statement about 4k/5k in Premiere CC with the nMP is false, insofar as performance goes.
