  • Mac OS X Lion kernel panic on shutdown (MacBook Pro 5,3)

So lately I have been getting kernel panic on shutdown, running Lion 10.7.3 on my Mid-2009 Macbook Pro (Intel C2D, nVidia 9400M & 9600M GT) Reading the log it seems that it has something to do with the graphics card. prior to this, I did try to switch my graphics card from the 9400M to the 9600M but it never worked as after I logged out (after choosing higher performance), the system preferences doesnt remember the option and after I shutdown/restart, it went well to the Logon Screen but after I log on the Mac started to perform VERY slowly and hangs VERY often so I did a PRAM reset after so that I could use it again, on the 9400M.
The log can be seen here - http://pastebin.com/mjb9s6f5
If anyone can help please do so as I really wanna use the 9600M GT card for my primary/day-to-day use rather than the 9400M.

Most likely culprits are these. Disable them and see if that fixes the problem:

  • Kernel panic on shutdown - Snow Leopard 10.6.2

    Hi
I am receiving intermittent Kernel Panic on shutdown - there seems to be no common denominator to the problem.
I have just ensured that the memory is bedded properly and checked hard disk connections. Then I've run the hardware test in detailed mode which has returned no hardware errors.
This is a Unibody Macbook Pro 15" - any ideas what I can do next? (the warranty has now expired of course)!!

Given Tech Note HT2546 which states (down at the bottom)
    "Providing the information to Apple
If you record a kernel panic, you can post this information to Apple Discussions. Please include detailed hardware configuration information in your post. You may do this by copying and pasting information from a System Profiler report into your post. Please also include any reproducible steps that lead to this message. Apple cannot respond to all postings."
I find that hard to believe.
Here's the log (looks like a PGP problem perhaps):

  • Kernel panic upon shutdown

I am again experiencing kernel panics when shutting down my system. I get the message "Your computer encountered a blah blah blah', the fans spin up to take-off speed and stays on all night. Oddest thing, it doesn't happen ever time rather every other time. This problem disappeared after AppleCare replaced my power supply but now its back. Anyone have a few good suggestions?
    1.8 Ghz iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Unplug any peripherals other than your apple keyboard and mouse and see if it still happens. If not, try each peripheral separately to see if you can isolate which one it is.
EDIT USB hubs and USB modems are the most likely culprits.

  • [SOLVED] kernel panic on shutdown

    Hi all,
I'm experiencing kernel panics when shutting down. My system is up to date.
    No issues with boot.
I don't know what to look for or to check. I tried to boot with fallback image but shutdown gives the same messages.
after printing "power off" (until there everything is fine) it prints something like a stack backtrace...messages not understandable by me. Are they logged anywhere?
    the last one is:
    /etc/rc.shutdown:line 100: 1761 killed /sbin/poweroff -d -f -h -i
    What can I do?
    Hope you'll give some feedback

    As Stebalien posted correction:
    edit:  /etc/rc.local.shutdown
    #!/bin/bash
    # /etc/rc.local.shutdown: Local shutdown script.
    run as root
    nano /etc/rc.local.shutdown
    add line
    modprobe -r vboxdrv
You could also test if problem is caused with module vboxdrv, by simply running as root command mentioned above and see if your problem persist during shutdown. To check if you have vboxdrv running use this
    lsmod | grep vboxdrv
Then, by editing /etc/rc.local.shutdown you make it permanent.

  • Kernel panics, crashes, shutdowns, and video problems

    Hey guys,
My girlfriend bought a black Macbook about 8 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago she started having the random shut-off problems, crash issues, etc that many have had. So then she took the system to the Genius Bar and they shipped it to Apple. She got the laptop back just 1 week ago after they replaced the logic board and the heat sink. Over the past two days she's having this problem again.
    Here's a picture of it:
After talking to AppleCare for about an hour on Tuesday, they reset the Power Management Unit on her laptop again. They also did a Hardware Test and asked her to reformat and reinstall Tiger. The rep said that if the same problem as before was happening again, she'd be termed a "looper" (which my guess means that they'll do a replacement). It seemed to be working fine until earlier today.
It randomly shut off, or reboots. Other times it shuts off the screen and keeps running... screen goes black, but you can feel the HD spinning, etc. It also had a kernel panic which said "Unable to find driver for this platform: ACPI". Also there was a crash where it was a gray screen with some horizontal color bars. After running the hardware tests it found no problems. After running memtest for several hours I also got no errors. Then she called AppleCare and visited the Genius Bar again, and they said they cannot replace the machine and all they can do right now is send it back for repairs. She cannot wait that long again for another repair. Last time it took over a week and it didn't seem to fix whatever problems this MacBook is having.
Any ideas on what to do? Having a week-long downtime again on a brand-new computer is not acceptable.

Presuming that those references to VMware versions 3.1.2 match the version of VMware Fusion that you have, I'd try updating it to version 3.1.3.  I'd also look for an update for your Logitech driver or uninstall it if you're no longer using a Logitech device.

  • Shows Kernel Panic Mac error to my system

    need help

Can you post some of your crash logs? Might be a clue. See Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546
Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060309075929717
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Kernel Panic After Security Update Reboot

My nearly new 24" iMac had a kernel attack after a Apple software multi-update, including a security item, ...rebooting into Darwin.
I've run Disc Utility from the install disc and verified and repaired permissions, rebooted in safe mode, back to Darwin and ran 6 repetitions of fsck -f, all reporting goodness, all rebooting to back to Darwin.
When I log into Darwin, and then command "exit", I pop into a blue screen, then back to Darwin and see -2 crashdump[327] :crash report written to :/ Library/Logs/CrashReporter/SecurityAgent.crash.log . If I command "reboot" it starts out looking normal as the OS is loading, shifts to a blue screen with loading icon, and back into Darwin.
Darwin then posts a new log in again. So neither Disc Utility nor Darwin is detecting anything problematic, no 3rd party peripherals, no hardware issues, and I'm trying to avoid an archive and install due to the 40gb of 3rd party graphics software unlikely to survive the process.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Thanks Steve,
Yes I've referenced the Xlab website which is helpful but has not as yet yielded a fix. It's a bit overwhelming with the number of possible suspects, the potential software conflicts are numerous. The panic coming on the heels of the security download is the only smoking gun that I presently have.
It's a slow go trying to identify potential conflicts when both primary diagnostic tools are indicating that everything's just fine.
The PRAM reset was one of the first things I tried, it did somewhat vary the boot sequence, but landed in the same place.
At this point I've little hope of avoiding a reinstall.

here is a script to make this process a little easier for everyone.
make sure you run this in the folder that store all home dir
    #!/bin/sh
    echo started at `date "+%y%m%d_%H%M"`.
    # Insure user is root before proceeding.
    #if [ $USER != "root" ]; then
    # echo "You must be root to execute this script."
    # exit
    #fi
    #Create input file
    ls -1 ./ > /tmp/users.txt
    #Set input file
    Input_file=/tmp/users.txt
    while read line; do
    user=`echo $line | tr -d "\r" | cut -f1`
    rm $user/Library/Fonts/Times\ New\ Roman
    echo $user "modified."

  • Stuck with kernel panic, iMac reboots constantly

A couple of days ago I got a kernel panic when I tried to switch on my iMac, i.e. I got this screen: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
I rebooted, got the same message again before I could do much.
There was a stuck DVD, so I could not even try to boot from DVD and run a hardware check.
I searched online, and somebody had written that this problem was fixed after changing a keyboard. I tried that, and it booted OK, was able to eject the disk, and THEN I got a kernel panic message. I rebooted and was able to work a bit, make a time machine backup, etc.
Yesterday the kernel panic appeared again. I inserted the MacOS Install disk 1, to make a hardware check, but after rebooting, the machine cycled rebooting and rebooting and rebooting.
Sometimes I got a kernel panic message, but not in most cases. It seems that the problem lies before I can choose the boot mode, since I cannot do it from disk, target mode, eject disk, etc...
Today I booted without keyboard-mouse connected, and it was OK. Soon after I connected the (new) keyboard & mouse, I got a kernel panic. After rebooting it was same story: it reboots automatically every 10 seconds or so...
I also tried resetting the PRAM (last resort from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2238 ), and it seems to me that the boot sound is louder, but keeps on rebooting the same...
I just have one RAM chip that came with the computer, so it's not some RAM incompatibility...
    Any ideas?
Even if there is a way of ejecting the disk, that might help, I could try to restore the system a few days back with time machine, or run some updates, in case it is a software problem... Otherwise it seems it is a hardware problem...

Can you boot from the restore disk and use the Disk Utility app to check the disk for errors?
Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your restore disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities > Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
    Resolving Kernel Panics
Try ejecting the disk by booting while holding down the mouse, or, boot while holding the Eject key on the keyboard.

The title describes my problem well I think. My macbook running Leopard had a kernel panic. When I rebooted, the user account was gone. I booted from the Leopard DVD to reset the password, and reset the password of the root account and a mobile account - to which I have forgotten the password - with admin privileges. Neither one will log on. I'm pretty sure the mobile account will need the domain controller to successfully log on.
The root user I have never activated, so I suppose I can't use that. And without the ability to log in I can't seem to think of a way to activate it either.
There's a guest account available. And it works alright.

Will either of the two accounts log in while booted in safe mode (hold down the shift key at boot time)?
