Kernel Panic PERSISTS :/ after multiple Disk Warrior and Disk Repairs
Hey guys, I need your wisdom!
My OS took a dump on me the other night. Finder froze up and when I restarted, I got this at boot up, (see below, after my whole explaination as to what I've tried).
So, I bought an external drive, partitioned and installed Mavericks OS, along with Disk Warrior.
I ran through everything on DW and it seemed to find issues and repair the problems. Then I ran it through Disk Utility and it all checked out, "ok".
However, when I went to restart with my main OS, it gave the kernel panic error, again.
I'm frustrated, needless to say. I've repeatedly tried to rebuild the drive, repair disk permissions, etc, and every time it seems to "work" but it doesn't.
I am running a data recovery program and it's seeming to find all my files there. But, I really want to just try to resolve this problem to access the drive and do a backup from within.
Please, what are you thoughts on this?

Um, so what about the TM backup, will it not transfer over the kernel panic errors?
Target Disk Mode requires a second Mac. It puts a "bad" Mac which may have hardware issues and cannot boot properly, in a mode where the internal drive can be mounted on a second Mac as an external Thunderbolt/Firewire drive.
1. Power cycle Kernel-Panic MAC (KP-MAC) in TDM by holding the T key at the chime. If you see a floating FW symbol, then the KP-MAC is in TDM.
2. Use a second Mac (Good-MAC) and connect the KP-MAC via Thunderbolt/FW cables as appropriate. This may require a TB-to-FW adapter, a FW800-to-FW400 "gender-bender" and an appropriate cable.
3. Once the KP-MAC drive is visible on the G-MAC, you can either create a full disk image backup of the KP-MAC Disk.
4. You can also configure an external drive as a TM target and backup KP-MAC's internal drive via TM with appropriate TM Options.
5. In this case the KP-MAC OS is not in use, just the hardware/firmware which is required to put it in TDM.
This can be useful when your graphics card or display may not work properly, but the CPU/Memory/Disk ar relatively unaffected.
How do I even do a TM backup on that original drive from my temp OS?
As suggested earlier, TM can be used.
Linc suggested using Disk Utility and doing it that way to make a backup and then transferring over everything to a newly installed OS that way.
In TDM, if a TM backup is not possible, for any number of reasons, Disk Utility can create an image of KP-MAC's drive which can be moved to any desired location and files can be extracted as necessary.
Another option is to create an external bootable OS on a USB/FW disk, boot from it, assuming that KP-MAC can be booted and does not have significant HW issues, and create a Disk Image to an external disk destination.
It's almost 15 years of my life on there.
Hence the need for a very good backup/restore strategy.

Kernel Panic only after I install 16GiB RAM but it passed memtest and AHT
Kernel Panics occur after I installed the 16GiB RAM(Corsair Vengeance Laptop Memory Kit 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL10 PC3 12800 (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10) in my MacBook Pro 17" 2011 early. It might appear in login window, or after using Safari for 2 or 3 hours. If I did't use the MBP overnight and just let it run, there would be strong possibility that kernel panic didn't occur. But on the next day when I went up and start using the computer, the kernel panic occur in half an hour.
I run the memtest for 12+ hours and Apple Hardware Test for 19+ hours, but no error was found. I tried OS X Lion 10.7.4 and OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 GM, and even a clean install of 10.7.4, but it still occur.
However, when I install one of the 16GiB a.k.a 8GiB, kernel panic never occur. I even tried one 8GiB with another my old 4GiB ram, and kernel panic didn't occur either.
I've tried to fix the problems for 2 weeks, and I did everything I can. So, can anyone tell me which part might be bad, Mac or RAM? Should I goto Genius Bar or ask Corsair for RMA?
Here's my latest panic log:

Thank you for your reply.
My 8GiB RAM is also two 4GiB DDR3 1600MHz (SAMSUNG) and it was running very well.
I also checked the intel documents (http://ark.intel.com/products/50067/Intel-Core-i7-2720QM-Processor-(6M-Cache-up- to-3_30-GHz), and it says:
Memory Types
DDR3-1066/1333/1600
If you have read my original reply to you post, I did mention that someimes it will work and sometimes it won't. Your Samsung might be rated at 1600MHz but the CL could be higher than your Corsair which is why it worked.
The memory Type you read in the link you provided is motherboard/logicboard depended. Your Logic board is rated at 1333MHz. So going 1600MHz will not benefit you since you're locked at 1333MHz.

Stuck in kernel panic lope after Time Machine Restore
Alright so I tried to download Mavericks recently only for the installer to say that the hard drive needed repaired. I tried to repair the disc using Disc Utility, it didn't work. So I backed everything up to an external hard drive and wiped the hard drive on the computer. From there I was pretty much stuck in a dead end because I could only enter recovery mode and recovery mode only offerred to 'reinstall' Lion OS X even though I never downloaded it (I tried to download it from recovery mode but it wouldn't let me because I hadn't purchased it previously).
So I decided to just restore from my Time Machine back up on the external hdd because really it was the only option availible to me at that point. So I did the restore and it asked me to restart my computer to complete the restore. I did, and I get a grey screen saying I need to restart and if I restart it's an infinite loop of kernel panic. I went in to Disc Utility in recovery mode, clicked on my 'Macintosh HD' and found it would appear to have everything from the Time Machine backup (same number of GBs, OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8). I then ran repair and verify disc. It told me everything was fine. I ran repair disc permissions. Everything was fine. Did the same thing with the external hdd to make sure it wasn't corrupt or something, and it was fine. After going through all that and ejecting the external hdd, I decided to reset the PRAM, but that didn't solve the kernel problem, I'm still stuck in this loop.
Any idea about what I should do? Or maybe what I did wrong?RAM and drivers are the most likely causes of kernel panics. The hardware test that comes with the Mac's original installer disk will tell you sometimes when RAM is bad. https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 is how to run the hardware test. Damaged files can cause kernel panics too, but I would not attempt to repair damaged files on a system whose backup status itself is unknown. You should have at least two separate off Mac backups before attempting a repair. Bring your Time Machine backup to another Mac, and clone it to be sure if you don't have a second one, before attempting repair its directory. Here's how to repair the directory:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6412
Other file damage caused by system "maintenance" tools can be more insideous. MacKeeper is the worst, as this tip explains:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036
Make sure the RAM is made for the age of the model in question. For instance a Late 2008 MacBook Pro takes 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM, yet some 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM will not work with it.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413 will help you identify your Mac.
http://www.crucial.com/ http://www.macsales.com/ http://www.datamem.com all sell lifetime warranty RAM by age and model. Do not buy ValueRAM. https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 is how to run the hardware test. -
Disk Warrior and 'The Folder with the ? Mark'
Good morning. My MacBook recently crashed and I am left with the dreaded and endlessly blinking 'Question Mark Folder'. I have tried to restart using the System Disk and running Disk Utility but the Hard Drive is nowhere to be found.
I have read in the Discussions that running DiskWarrior may help. I have the program on my PowerBook G4 as well as on an external hard drive, but I do not have a DiskWarrior disc. Is there a way to run the program from these to repair the drive on my MacBook or retrieve my data? If not, is there a way to make a DiskWarrior disc from my .dmg file?
Thanks for your help.
JohnDisk Warrior comes on a bootable disc unless you downloaded it or lost yours. You cannot easily make a bootable CD or DVD, but your could put it on a bootable external hard drive that has a bootable copy of OS X (current version) and your copy of DW must be at least 4.0 for Tiger or 4.1 for Leopard.
However, it's most unlikely that DW will help you because the question mark means that important system files are lost or corrupted. The solution is to reinstall OS X. It's possible you can do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Kernel panic immediately after connecting Android via USB
Hi!
I am getting a kernel panic immediately after I connect my Android phone via MTP. It wasn't happening before (on pre-Yosemite version).
It may be relevant to know that I installed Samsung Kies before, which installs it's kernel modules, but I removed both modules and software itself since then.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Real Time Help Needed: Disk Warrior and Setup Assistant
My system disk crashed a couple of days ago. I installed a clean system on a firewire attached disk and ran Disk Warrior against the failed drive. DW says the disk is too damaged to replace the directory structure. So, I'm in the process of copying over files that it was able to provide access to via the Preview disk. However, I'm wondering whether I can run setup assistant against the Disk Warrior Preview disk to get back the content of the keychain? I had a lot of passwords stored and don't have a backup.
Anybody offer any help?Actually, I just remember another step that probably has something to do with this.
The directory entries for ~/Library/Mail and the individual mailboxes were corrupt, so Disk Warrior recovered the contents and put them in two arbitrarily named folders. I copied the contents of the Library/Mail folder into the new system's Library/Mail folder. However, I wasn't sure where to put the mailboxes. I looked on my other Mac system and it had a Mailboxes folder inside the Library/Mail folder, so I created new folder called Mailboxes and copied the recovered mailboxes into the new folder.
Another point that's probably related. The MessageRules.plist file exists in the Library/Mail folder, but the I don't see the rules when I open Mail.app. It looks like Mail.app isn't seeing the contents of Library/Mail.
Any thoughts? -
Mac Mini has crashed - Disk Warrior and External Hard Drive Question.
I have Mac Mini that has crashed. I purchased Disk Warrior and was able to boot from the CD. Disk Warrior allowed me to see my files again but there is no way I can move them back onto my hard drive. I cannot grab them. Before I go into specifics....If I purchase an external hard drive and try to hook it up to my Mac Mini, will I be able move these files to this new external hard drive? Is this a possibility?
Or will my new external hard drive need to go through a set up phase - which might be impossible since hard drive I'm trying to take the files from is technically dead?
Sorry - I'm a novice at these things.Hello, no apologies needed for being a novice, great you asked!
YES, depends where you buy the Drive, it may need Formatting first to Mac OS Extended...
How to format your disks...
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks...
http://Pondini.org/OSX/DU.html
These generally come Mac Ready, & get Firewire if you have a Firewire port, much faster...
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Then in DiskWarrior, hold Option or alt key when selecting Internal to repair, that will do the best job of Scavenging the directory & provide a whole new Drive icon to copy or clone your info over to the external drive. -
iMac 10.5.8 is slow. Verified Disk Permissions and then repaired. No big improvement in speed.
What about internet files (safari and firefox) ; caches and cookies?
Thank you.Applejack might help.

Article on using:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10334620-263.html?tag=mfiredir
It runs in single user mode, where it runs more safely than other maintenance/cleaning programs because there is less chance of interference from the OS. After installing (you won't see it in the Applications Folder) hold CMD-S at startup. You will get a black screen with MS-DOS like text. Just follow the prompts: type in "applejack AUTO" and it will run through the following:
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
You can also run tasks selectively and for specific users by typing in "applejack." After running in "AUTO," you can go back and run it again as "applejack," steps 3 & 4 only, for your user.
The first reboot will take much longer than usual, as it rebuilds caches. It may take several restarts to see the benefits. Because of the deep cache cleaning in AUTO mode some applications may tell you they are being opened for the first time.

Disk Warrior and Drive Genius Kernel Panic
I'm using an early 2011 Mac Book Pro 2.0GHz i7. Unable to boot from Disk Warrior 4.3 or 4.2 and Drive Genius 3.02. It is causing a kernel panic. I just bought this
Mac Book Pro two day's ago. This is my second MBP in three day's. The first one just blew up. Anyone else have this issue?Neither DW nor DG versions are on discs that can boot your model. You need an external drive with a bootable system installed and on which you have DW and DG installed. Then boot from the external in order to DW or DG on your MBP's internal drive. Alternatively, you can install a bare copy of OS X onto a 16 GB USB flash drive along with DW and DG.

After upgrading to 10.6.8, I almost immediately began experiencing multiple random kernel panic errors. I reinstalled the operating system that came with my notebook from the cd (10.6?) and the problem went away. I upgraded again to 10.6.8 and again began experiencing the same error. I have since gone back and installed the operating syatem from the cd and then upgraded to 10.6.7. I have not had a single kernel panic error since, but I would like to upgrade to 10.6.8 so that I can install Lion when it is avaialable. Any thoughts as to how I can do this without experiencing all of the accompanying kernel panic errors?
Thank you. The log is below:

Kernel Panics Again After Clearing HD and Reinstalling OS X Mavericks
Hello,
I went to the Apple store the other day to try to get some help with finding out why my MacBook Pro has been getting kernel panics fairly consistently since upgrading to Mavericks months ago. All they did was tell me to erase the HD and reinstall Mavericks, and not fifteen minutes after doing so, it happened again.
Any help would be appreciated. This is really getting on my nerves.

Thunderbolt Bus:Did you upgrade your RAM. If so, you may want to check it with the Apple Hardware Test or Rember.
Since there is nothing non-apple there, try an NVRAM reset and reinstall OS X again.
If you still have problems, and you can restore the orginal RAM, try that. -
Random Kernel Panics even after Clean Install from Genius Bar
Despite being "all apple" I'm about fed up with these kernel panics and ready to convert!
I believe these started with Lion... I'm now fully updated on Maverick.
Nothing has seemed to change.
I took my iMac to the Genius Bar after I finally figured out a way to replicate a panic.
After all sorts of memory, and other hardware tests they suggested and performed a clean sweep.
I came home, restored with Time Machine, and thought all was well...
Now, a week later I'm back to having restarts in the middle of extensive projects.
I've had two in the past two hours.
I initially diagnosed it as anytime a large file (2GB+) was being moved, saved, or when a back up or virus scan was being performed.
Then it happened at other times and proved that wrong.
Then I assumed it was RAM. I took it out, cleaned, and performed multiple tests. All was good and up.
Then I could reproduce it while working with a LARGE file in iMovie.
Thats when I took it to the Bar.
Now, I'm long out of iMovie and working mainly in Google Chrome with nothing else opened, but Evernote, and FileZilla, which I have used for years.
The last two panics have included the : 0xdeadbeefdaadbeef
Could it be the grapics drivers? Using
NVIDIA GeForce 9400
Type: GPU
Bus: PCI
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0869
Revision ID: 0x00b1
ROM Revision: 3454
Any Help?
I can post the panics if needed...Here's the EtreCheck... looks like I have a lot more 3rd Party stuff than I realized...? Probably some of the problem?

What does this mean???Welcome to Apple Discussions!
When the CPU is constantly referred to by kernel panics, and no other part of the machine is, it normally is a RAM or logicboard issue. Sometimes if the RAM or another board is not properly seated, this will happen. Just be certain, dismount, and disconnect all third party peripherals, and see if the issue persists. Make sure your hard drive isn't over 85% full (an arbitrary number), and your data is backed up. If after that is done, you can't seem to stop the kernel panics, run the hardware test disk that came with your machine. If you are missing that disk, contact the person who sold you the machine for the disk, or call AppleCare at the number below:
http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
You didn't say if you are running an Intel or PowerPC iMac. Running the hardware test from Intel Macs is on this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
Newer PowerPC iMacs on this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287
Older PowerPC iMacs came with their own hardware test CD which is bootable with the startup manager:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
To identify PowerPC versus Intel iMacs, see this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724
If no error appears on hardware test, the problem can still be the RAM. But tell us the status of your backup before you start opening your machine. There are other issues which may be present. -
Kernel Panic right after start up on my PowerBook G4
I get the standard kernel panic message quite frequently after I start up my PowerBook. I have used the Disk Utility (software), and the Hardware Utility to check the system hardware, and both say all is well.
I would appreciate any ideas on how to fix this.
Thanks,
ShawnWell, the "erase and install" feature should do the trick. That does essentially what I was thinking by having you format the drive. No other tricks needed, just update as soon as you're done using the latest combo updater available for your OS version via the software update option in the apple menu.
Happy installing!
