Kernel panic-please help me decipher crash report

I recently experienced a kernel panic on my MacBook Pro (OS X version 10.9.5). Can anybody help me decipher what caused it and whether there's anything I could do to prevent future occurrences? Thanks in advance.

Hi Eric,
Thank you for your reply. In the meanwhile, I did some research on kernel panics, and I figured the VirtualBox kernel extensions would be the obvious suspects. I find it odd, though, given that I wasn't running the VirtualBox app itself. To be sure, I just upgraded VirtualBox.
At any rate, let me explain in a little bit more detail the circumstances of the panic. I had had a Wolfram Mathematica notebook open for quite some time. The crash itself happened while I was browsing a pdf document in Google Chrome. After the panic, OS X automatically restarted and it could restore all windows and apps that were open before the panic, but something weird was happening: both Finder was unresponsive and I didn't have WiFi connection. I also noticed that Mathematica had 7 or 8 grayed-out, unresponsive windows open with the “hourglass” icon superimposed on each of them (not the beach ball, but the icon you usually see under the Apple logo upon startup), instead of the 2 and 3 windows Mathematica had open before the crash (notebook, message panel, and a toolbar). Once I force-quit Mathematica, Finder immediately became responsive again and the WiFi connection resumed.
Based on this weird experience, I have three—admittedly non-expert—hypotheses about what caused the panic:
1. Mathematica exhibited some idiosyncratic, one-time behavior that somehow caused a systemic failure. Perhaps some pathological interaction with the VirtualBox extensions?
2. RAM problems: five months ago, I upgraded the manufacturer-provided 2x2 GB RAM slots to 2x4 GB RAM slots I bought on Amazon (the model had very good reviews) after double-checking it would work with my MBP. Up until today the new RAM seemed to be working properly.
3. Other hardware problems: my MBP is not young (it's an early 2011 model that I bought more than 3.5 years ago), and there may be some mysterious HDD or other hardware failure that began to take its toll.
Given that I had never had kernel panics before and the horror stories I read about their frequent recurrences once they start, it would be very helpful for me to know what was the likely explanation for this panic and what steps I can make to prevent future occurrences. Do you think the description above points to a more definitive cause?
Thank you very much for your advice.

  • Constant Kernel Panics- Please help!

    Hi,
I am currently running Mountaint Lion 10.8.5 (haven't updated to mavericks quite yet) on a 2.53 GHz Intel core 2 duo Macbook Pro.  I'm not sure of the year it was made but if that's really important I can look up the serial.  Anyways, this thing is making me crazy.  Kernel Panics ("your computer shut down because of a problem") have become an extraordinarily common part of my life.  The more demanding the task (LOW resolution games would be the most demanding), the more frequent the Panics. Sometimes it even happens when I'm just browsing or watching netflix.  Usually before the kernel panic occurs the computer has heated up quite a bit and the fan starts wurring like an engine.  I do consistently use my laptop on my bed; I heard that may be affecting the airflow to the vents.  But I assure you the Panics occur on flat surfaces as well.  I bought this machine used so I don't know it's full history, but under my care, it has taken no spills, drops, or damages otherwise.  I have tried many things to help: Repairing my hard drive with Disk Utility, resetting my PRAM, cleaning things up with MacKeeper, even global virus scans that come up clean.  I don't claim to be any kind of expert, but I have tried all the tools at the disposal of my knowledge and I am really starting to get frustrated.
My last OS update was recent; far after panics started to be a problem.
I pray to god this is not a hardware issue.
Any help would be of the highest appreciation

PS I don't know if anyone could help with this, but my machine also runs unbelievably slow considering it has 8 whopping Gigabytes of RAM.

    Aaron is a boy,
you can replace your two 4 GB 1333 MHz memory modules with two 4 GB 1066 MHz memory modules, so that you can continue to have a total of 8 GB of RAM installed. Having the proper speed RAM installed in your MacBook Pro will make a world of difference compared to its current performance. The little white booklet that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro shows how to replace the memory modules, if you’re comfortable with performing minor upgrades; the important thing is to discharge any static electricity on you by touching something metallic before handling the memory modules or touching anything inside of your MacBook Pro. If you’d be more comfortable with someone else doing the memory module installation, then any competent computer shop would be able to do it.

  • My MBP is Kernel Panicing, and I see the Crash Report is at 107% CPU

My fans are spinning quickly, and the whole thing sounds like a Jet Plane, even when no programs are open.  I have been to the Genius bar 3 times this week.
They keep looking at it, doing disk checks, repairing permissions, then I left it with them for 3 days.  They ran "diagnostic tests", but still came back with nothing.
They finally agreed to wipe my Hard Drive.  Since I got it back Friday night, I had one more kernel panic, and I've managed to update Mountain Lion...but the Crash Report thing is still going on.
It's pretty obvious that the Genius bar here in London doesn't have a clue how to fix this, so what should I do?

Here's the one from last night.

    Hi, Dorian.
You are describing the following message:
That indicates a kernel panic. Likewise, the log you posted is a panic log, not a crash log.
The following line indicates the panic was caused by a Page Fault:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001A3135): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 0, Type 14=page fault)...
A common fault type, a Page Fault indicates the processor could not access either data memory or the next instruction to be executed. Potential causes include RAM problems, hard disk corruption, and programming errors.
Since there are no kernel-loadable extensions in the backtrace, the panic log offers no easily-discernable additional clues. I suggest you be sure you are running the latest version of Parallels: earlier versions were known to cause panics.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
    Good luck!

anyone knows what's wrong with this?? thanks

Hello there. I have done a little research and everything I have found points to a bad memory module. I would try booting from the install CD and running a complete hardware test and checking those results. If everything passes, and you feel comfortable, remove one of your RAM sticks and reboot the computer. See if you get a panic then. If so, swap the sticks and reboot with the other. If you don't get a panic, then you most definitely have a bad piece of memory. In that case, call AppleCare and they'll send you another. But if all this seems too much trouble, you could always take your computer to an Apple Store and let them do it for you, or call Apple Care and have a chat with them.
Hope you get the problem figured out. I know it stinks!

  • Kernel Panic - Please Help!

    Hi all,
I am having a problem with my Late 2009 27" iMac Intel Core i7. I am currently running the latest updated version of Lion (10.7.1).
I have been having Kernel Panic problems for a while and, having searched through various forums, have been unable to fix the problem.
Around 4 months ago my wife had our first Kernel Panic which instructed that our iMac should be powered off by pressing the button. This was whilst using Snow Leopard.  I was working away at the time for a few months so did not know what might have caused it. This has been happening every now and then since this occassion. A couple of days ago I had a kernel panic which wasn't resolved by restarting the computer, which I did several times. I completely reinstalled Lion which seemed to temporarily fix it, but I have just had another Kernel Panic and would be very grateful for any advice.
I purchased my iMac new around 6 months ago, so the first issue happened just a couple of months after buying it. It has 2 x 2 GB RAM installed. I have not installed any of my own, I haven't even opened the cover! There seems to be no program or event that sets it off. My kernel panic occurred today when I was not even at my computer and therefore was not opening or closing any applications.
I have recently installed Lion on my system. I noticed initially that this caused problems with Wi Fi as it told me that no hardware was installed. After reinstalling Lion after several KP’s (I also completely erased my hard drive to try to isolate the problem), Wi Fi appeared to be working again. After today’s KP I am again being told that no Wi Fi hardware is installed. Having just re-started the system, I received another KP and was given the following information:
Sorry for quality, the old 3GS never did have a great camera! From this message, it appears to my untrained mind that I am having a problem with AirPort. I know what you're thinking. I should search through the discussions because you are quite right, I am not alone in this problem. Indeed the thread at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3194446?start=45&tstart=0 suggests what looks like the same issue. One person (Dani31) replaced the file IO80211Family.kext by that of Snow Leopard to fix it.
My main problem is that I have no idea what this solution means or how to implement it! I'm afraid I'm a complete novice when it comes to all things 'Terminal' related so am hoping that someone might take pity on me and walk me through a solution!
I use Ethernet to connect to the internet and the only wireless feature I use is to share with my MacBook Air, a feature I would happily give up if it meant fixing the problem. If somehow disabling Airport was the best solution to a stable system then I am happy to do it.
    All advice gratefully received,
    Chris

  • Installed Yosemite...now my MacBook pro won't start up. Keep showing "Kernel Panic!" HELP!

installed Yosemite and now my MacBook pro won't start up. Keeps showing "kernel panic"
    PLEASE HELP ME!

If you can't start up and log in in the usual way, try in safe mode.
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Log in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. If you have only one account, you are the administrator.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode.
If you're able to log in, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

  • Please help apps. Crashing on 64 gb 4 gen touch. Run 5.0.1 I know the temp fix of logging in but want to fix report shows "low mmemory crash" which is not true

Please help apps. Crashing on 64 gb 4 gen touch. Run 5.0.1 I know the temp fix of logging in but want to fix report shows "low mmemory crash" which is not true

Why do you say "not true"? The 4G iPod only has 256 MB of memory and out of memoty errors are not uncommon with iOS 5.
memory is different that the 8, 32 ir 64 GB or storage on the 4G iPods.
To resolve double click the Home button and delete the apps from the mulitasking dock that you are not using and the power off and back on the iPod. You have to do that periodically.

Both Memory Clean and Clean My Mac could have cause the damage which triggered the kp.
I would back up your Mac, erase and reinstall. Then Migrate your user data from the backup.
Uninstalling Tuxera is a troubleshooting process. You don't have to keep it uinstalled, just long enough to test to see if it is causing the problems.
However, if it doesn't happen regularly, it would be hard to determine if it was the cause.  And, as I mentioned, I don't think it would be the cause.

  • Kernel Panic - causing my iMac to crash every time i use it - it is not clear what is causing this issue - i am on the lastest version of Mountain Lion

Hi, this is driving me mad, any help in identifying a fix would be so great!
I seem to get this all the time since i upgraded to OS X Lion, am now on Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) and the problem is persisting - my PC hard ware is: 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, the Mac has 4GB of memory (667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM), it is using a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB Graphics card.
The result is a kernel panic, leading to the system crashing and waiting for a remote debugger connection. I have attached the report below.
I should mention that post the Iion upgrade, i have taken my PC to the Genius bar and they have re-installed the OS - however it has not fixed the problem, despite the mac guys thinking it had.
    Thanks,
         Richard

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo nvram boot-args=""
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.

QTY UPTO PREVIOUS BILL AND CURRENT QUANTITY .
    8) CUMILATIVE AMOUNT-----WE GET IT BY MULTIPLYING CURRENT RATE WITH CUMILATIVE QUANTITY.
EXPLANATION FOR THE 2ND AND 3RD FIELDS
    2) QTY UP TO PREVIOUS BILL : SHOULD GIVE THE QTY ACCORDING TO THE SELECTION-SCREEN FIELD ….BELNR …IF BELNR IN THE SELECTION SCREEN CONTAINS 10 INVOICE FOR A PARTICULAR WORKORDER…EBELN
    SELECTED..
AND WE SELECT ONE INVOICE FOR EXAMPLE 6TH INVOICE…….
IT CONTAINS SOME MATERIALS AND QTY FOR THAT METERIALS …
BUT IN THE FIELD OF QTY UP TO  PREVIOUS BILL THE QTY OF THE PREVIOUS INVOICE OF THAT PARTICULAR WO SHOULD BE DISPLAYED..
THE  IS QTY OF THE PREVIOUS INVOICES OF 12345 = QTY UP TO PREVIOUS BILL + CURRENT QTY GIVES CUMILATIVE QTY FIELD…..
    OR
ADDING OF 12345+6 = CUMULATIVE QTY – OF CURRENT QTY GIVES
    QTY UP TO PREVIOUS BILL.
EITHER WAY WE CAN GET THE OUTPUT…….
PLEASE HELP WITH THE ENTIRE  PROGRAM OR LOGIC……….
PLEASE SEND ME THE CODING TO MY MAIL [email protected]

    Nalini,
Take the step by step directions try to build  your program... if you find any difficulty in the middle just pose the question at that time.... every one will be ready to answer your questions....
    eg:
    take the first line...
    REPORT NAME : CUMULATIVE BILL
design a report program with the above given name in se38...
    then second line.....
    SELECTION-SCREEN FIELDS
    WERKS -
    TABLE: EKPO--- PLANT
    LGORT -
    TABLE: EKPO--- STORAGE LOCATION
    EBELN -
    TABLE: EKPO….. PURCHASING DOCUMENT NUMBER
build select-options: with the above mentioned 3 fields
    3rd direction.....
NOTE : FOR THIS EBELN NUMBER SELECTED IN THIS FIELD THE NEXT FIELD SHOULD BE REACTED. MEANS FOR THE PURCHASING DOCUMENT SELECTED HOW MANY INVOICE ARE MADE SHOULD ONLY DISPLAY FOR THE BELOW FIELD.THE NEXT FIELD IS GIVEN BELOW.
    work accordingly....
If you devide the spec like this... it would be easy for you to build the program...
try it once... you can do it nalini....don't fear with that spec...
    gud luck nalini...

Then maybe it's time to buy a new Windows notebook.
The RAM has either gone bad or somehow become unseated. Also there is the chance that the RAM slots have failed.

  • Kernel Panic on MacPro 1,1.  Need help deciphering crash report.

    Hi folks!
Been having a ton of issues lately with the MacPro 1,1.  Frequent slow-downs, pinwheels, sluggish video and scrolling, especially in Safari.
Recently, I reinstalled Lion which put me back on version 5 of Safari and I've yet to update.  This didn't solve any of my problems either.Kernel
Anyway, just had a Kernel Panic and it forced me to restart.  Here's the report.  Can someone help explain what caused the panic?

You have  a Mac Pro, which uses Error Correction Code memory. That is not a memory error panic report, and you do not have a memory problem.
zalloc is the actual routine that detected the error. It is a memory allocation program which has been tested to death. It is vanishingly unlikely that you have discovered a problem in zalloc.
PluginProcess is what was running when it panic-ed. I expect that has to do with Safari plug-ins. ¿Are all the Plugins you are running now the correct versions to be running in this version of Safari?
You have many add-ons to the Mac OS X kernel:
    com.techsmith.TACC 1.0.2
    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.6.6
    com.blackmagic-design.desktopvideo.iokit.driver 9.7.1
    com.blackmagic-design.desktopvideo.iokit.framebufferdriver 9.7.
    com.blackmagic-design.desktopvideo.iokit.decklinkhddriver 1.0.0
again, you should be certain that each is the right version for the Mac OS X you are running. If still no joy, you may need to remove them all and test with no third-party add-ons.
NOT related to your symptoms, you are running all 4GB DIMMs on the B riser, and only one pair of 2GB DIMMs on the other Riser. Optimum performance is achieved with larger modules in the lowest-numbered slots, balanced between the two risers.
That would be a pair of 4GB DIMMs in the first two slots on each riser, a pair of 2GB DIMMs in the second slots on one, and the others empty. If you can fill all slots, you get a slight boost in speed as well.
