Kernel Panic Problem or Display Problem
Often with my iBook, upon wakes from long sleep I get kernel panics(I'll call Apple later about this, when i run the Hardware test CD everything's ok).
My last KP(Yesterday), I noticed some lines and such side to side on the display, not huge by any means, if I didn't take a more careful look I probably ould have missed it.
When I move the screen I don't get anything, maybe once in a couple hundred I'll get a little red box and some lines running from it.
Is this a Logic board problem or is it more display and kernel panic?
The last time my logic board went, it caused one kernel panic, but I realized what was happening, and called in for the fix. If I had continued using it, I'm sure I would have seen repeated kernel panics.
Here are some links I've gathered on kernel panics (and how to go about resolving them):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?128@@.3bbb4a38
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106805
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106228
Are you under AppleCare? If so, don't hesitate to call in on this.
If not, the "lines on the display" symptom does sound like the logic board problem. Check out the iBook Logic Board Extension Program FAQ page. If the symptoms listed there look familiar, give Apple a call.

Kernel panic: hardware or software problem?
Can anyone read those logs and tell me what could be the problem?
I bought a refurbished MBP 15" 2.2GHz i7 quad core with anti glare screen and originally 750GB HDD 4Gb of ram and it arrived on September 1st. I wanted to upgrade to 8GB of RAM and a SSD but at the moment I upgraded only the SSD (to a 120GB Corsair Force 3). In those days I experienced 5 kernel panic. It's not the first mac I buy, and those kernel panic are a bit too frequent and unnatural. I run the Apple Hardware Test twice (in the extended test) but no errors there.
Before getting Kernel panic, it could happen that I see some graphic artifacts on screen (maybe it's the ram? the graphic card(s)?). I installed gfxCardStatus v2.1 to switch to intel integrated GPU.
I'm running on mac os 10.6.8, all software is up to date.
Here are the logs:

Kernel Panic When Changing Displays
I have a brand-new 2014 MacBook Pro, running Mavericks, and am getting a Kernel Panic nearly every time I connect or disconnect any type of external display.
Attached is a typical entry from the Panic log. Any and all advice gratefully received...

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software. -
Macbook Unibody problem or Display problem?
Hello,
I don't know if this question is specifically linked to the Macbook Pro 15", but it's the best guess.
I finally broke down and bought a Minidvi to DVI adapter so that I could hook my Macbook Pro to my older 23" cinema display. The problem that I have found is that I can't get the Cinema display to get to it's highest resolution when mirroring displays. When they aren't mirrored I can get it up to it's highest resolution. Is this a known issue that I haven't been able to find? Is there a graphics card update that I don't know about? What's funny is when you do change the resolution, the OS says you've put it in the high resolution, but when you look at the monitor, it's plain to see that you're not.
I also just tried this on my 17" 2.3GHz Macbook Pro and got the same results.
I've reset the PRAM, restart with and without the monitor hooked up.What you're trying to do is not possible. That's the definition of "mirroring" - you get a mirror image of the notebook's display on the external monitor - down to the screen resolution. If your MBP's native resolution is 1440x900, then that's what you get on the external monitor. The only time you'll have optimal resolution on both while mirroring is if both displays have the same native resolution. The other two options you have are to span displays, or use the notebook in closed lid mode with a USB or Bluetooth keyboard/mouse.

How can I differentiate logic board problem from display problem?
I have been given an iBook G3 900MHz (one of the models known to have logic board issues.) When I boot it up, I get the Apple chime, the hard drive spins, and the caps lock and num lock lights light up. Sometimes the display comes on, sometimes it does not. When it does, it flickers and goes off and on. I don't get lines or pixels or anything that I have seen described as being indicative of logic board failure. As far as I can tell, the computer works fine otherwise.
So, how can I be sure the problem is logic board-related and not an issue with the inverter board or the display cable?
I was also wondering, how much trouble - if any - is Apple giving people about replacing logic boards on certain models of iBook? This one should be eligible, as its serial number falls in the right range and it was bought in Oct. '03, which was within the past three years.
Thanks!there was a period when the display showed colored lines and pixels
Classic logic board symptoms.
The iBook freezes a lot
Mine did, too, with the logic board problem.
my gut tells me the problem is logic board-related.
My gut tells me your gut is probably right.
My question about repair coverage is this: According to Apple's support site, where I entered the serial number, this computer's "estimated purchase date" was October 3, 2003. But the owner no longer has any actual proof of purchase; no receipt, no packing slip, nothing. Is that needed to have Apple replace the logic board?
No. As I said, I bought mine, used, on eBay. I called in when I recognized the logic board symptoms (I had been working these boards for over a year at that point), they sent a box. It went out on Wednesday. They got it, fixed it, and shipped it back to me on Thursday, and it was back in my hands on Friday. (Practice makes perfect, I guess.)
Also, does Apple make their determination of age from when the computer was purchased or when it was built?
Purchase date only.
Or does that decision depend on if a person can produce a receipt or not?
Nope. The only paperwork I sent in with mine was the slip Apple sent in the box to indicate what all I was sending them (adapter, battery, extra RAM). What good would an eBay seller's receipt have done?
I probably have to go to my local service center (in NY that's a place called Tekserve, which is a great place to get a computer fixed, but the wait to be seen averages over an hour!)
Don't mess around with Tekserve. Call Apple at the number listed on the FAQ page:

Thanks again for your input. I appreciate it. -
Mac Pro kernel panic, RAM does not seem to be problem
My Mac Pro (late 2006) now has kernel panics at startup. Problem first happened while computer was in sleep mode, a second kernel panic happened about 10-15 minutes after reboot the first time. Now it happens at startup every time. Zapped PRAM multiple times to no effect. Tested original 10.4 install disk, as well as 10.5 and 10.6 upgrade disks with all external connections removed and from a cold boot. The 10.4 disk causes the kernel panic every time. The 10.5 and 10.6 disks do too, if the C or D key is depressed. The upgrade disks will hang in a gray screen (10.6) or pale blue screen (10.5) with no keys depressed--computer keeps running but fails to boot. Also tested the RAM (4 X 512 MB) in different combinations of one pair in the top riser board (and switched risers, and removed lower board completely). All resulted in kernel panics. Next option?
To anyone finding this thread in the future looking for help on a similar problem, the CNet forums Mac section gave me the correct advise: replace the video card. The stock GeForce 7300 was causing the kernel panics. I replaced it with a Radeon HD 3870, from eBay, and everything went back to normal operation. (I did also have to upgrade my OS for the new card to work properly.)

Kernel panics after upgrading to OS 10.8.5
I installed the 10.8.5 update on my early 20098 model Mac Pro. I thought it strange that I had to restart the computer twice after the update. But everything initially seemed to work fine after the update. But while I was updating the OS on my Macbook Pro, leaving my Mac Pro unattended for about 45 minutes, I came back to the Mac Pro and discovered that there was a kernal panic warning on the screen to the effect that the computer shut down because of a problem. I was given the option to restart the computer and it seemed to work normally for the next few hours. But when I checked on it the next morning, the same kernel panic message was displayed. I tried starting up in Safe Mode. As far as I can tell everything works well in safe mode, at least for the 3 or 4 hours I left it in that mode. Back in standard boot the kernel alerts started back again. This happens so far only when I am not actively using the computer but when it is left unattended. The computer is set to sleep after 1 hour.
An internet search suggested that there might be a conflict with a .kext file. There are only 5 .kext files loaded at startup that are non-Apple ones. I removed three of them since they were not critical for the use of my computer. But two of the .kext files are necessary for the proper function of the Mac Pro as it is configured. There is an "Accelsior.kext" file that is required for my OWC Mercury Accelsior PCI Express SSD card and two .kext files necessary for my CalDigit USB 3.0 Host Adapter (CalDigitFastIO.kext and CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext). Removing all but the CalDigit .kext files and the Accelsior file did not correct the problem. Next I simply re-installed the 10.8.5 updater. This did not correct the problem. I think I will go ahead and remove the CalDigit .kext files as a trial since I can operate the computer without USB 3.0 for a while. But beyond this I don't know what I should do next.
Here is a copy of the kernel report in Console that was generated with the last kernel panic:

Thanks for any input or help. Unless there is a simple fix I think I will have to revert back to my pre-update backup copy of 10.8.4
JohnGlenn,
Since you do not have the CalDigit USB 3 card installed and we have the exact same inducible kernel panics after update to 10.8.5, I think we can rule out a role for the CalDigit card in this matter. Apparently, according to Larry at OWC, he and other users are not experiencing problems with the Accelsior card after the update. This suggests it is not a universal problem but it affects only Mac Pros running certain software or hardware add-ons. It would be interesting to know in what other regards your system resembles mine in some unique fashion that might explain this problem.
You have the MacPro 5,1 while I have the MacPro 4,1 so we know that it is not isolated to just one model of the Mac Pro. I have 20GB RAM installed with a module in each of the slots. I have SuperDrives installed in both bays. I have all 4 internal HD bays occupied. The Rember app indicates that there are no problems with my RAM. I have multiple external FW HDs, a Zoom USB modem, and 2 monitors attached to the Mac. It is hard to imagine any of these features as being related to the problem at hand. I might try removing all attached devices to see if this makes a difference. Meanwhile I'll await a follow up report from OWC.

10.4.8 Tiger-Wake From Sleep Kernel Panics
I've seen many discussions abound kernel panics and wake-from-sleep issues, but nothing exactly like mine.
Most importantly, mine is a desktop Mac-PowerMac G4, 2 proc, 1.25 GHz.
We are experiencing persistent kernel panic and system crash problems, all of which happen when we try to bring the machine back up from sleep by tapping the keyboard and/or clicking the mouse.
The system responses have included:
• Hard drive and fan spinning up, but no mounting of any USB device (the ZIP 250 drive doesn't whir and the Studio Display remains dark
• Machine wakes up but the display has what can only be described as "pieces" missing from it. Then the kernel panic display happens.
• Mouse pointer moves but activates and affects nothing.
The very last kernel panic was intriguing. The machine woke up and appeared to be fine for a moment but there was the problem when 'chunks' were missing from the display image. Firefox, which had been running when the Mac went to sleep, crashed with no error message-it simply disappeared. Then the kernel panic screen happened. The report generated at restart was thus:

While I do have 1GB onboard memory it probably ought to be said that 512MB worth is a memory stick from Crucial that I installed about a week and a half before upgrading from 10.3.9 to 10.4.6. I doubt it's the memory's fault in as much as that period of time was more than enough for the problem to crop up and it ran with no complaints whatsoever until I upgraded to Tiger.
I have also tried removing the ZIP 250 from the system; I have Adobe Version Cue CS2 running and had that turned off; various tips and tricks I found about too numerous to recount. So far the problem is proving intractable.
Does anyone have any idea of what I ought to try next?
Much appreciation in advance,
Sam Klein.
PowerMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 1.25 GHz, Dual Processor, MDD, 1GB RAMI recommend having both Alsoft DiskWarrior 3.0.3+ (DW3) and Micromat TechTool Pro version 4.1.x+ (TTP4).
While both can build a new, optimized directory for a disk, I have found there are some disks that only DW3 can repair. DW3 is a "specialist" in disk directories.
Likewise, TTP4 brings a host of useful hardware testing routines that are neither in DW3 nor the Apple Hardware Test. TTP4 also includes an excellent disk defragmenter. Defragmenting is generally not required under Mac OS X 10.3 or later unless you perform an extensive amount of video editing or your disk is nearing full, in which case it can be useful. See Mac OS X: About Disk Optimization. TTP4's Surface Scan is also useful in determining if a disk has developed bad sectors.
If you own neither utility today, the initial investment may seem like a good deal of money, but compared to your data and your time, the cost of these utilities is insignificant in the the long run. I've found their upgrades to be reasonably priced for what they do.
Neither utility is a substitute for a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution. But I've seen DW3 save more than one person's bacon and the suite of hardware tests and additional functions TTP4 bring to the table make both a worthwhile investment.
If you can only purchase one now, make it DW3. Add TTP4 when funds permit.
Better to have the tools and not need them, than to need them and not have them.
A good mechanic has more than one kind of wrench in their toolbox.
In some ways, you're lucky to have a PowerPC-based Mac: DW3 is not yet available for Intel-based Macs.
Good luck!

Kernel Panic with LaCie Firewire Speakers and SL 64 bit
Hi all,
I experienced kernel panics during boot in 64 bit and realized that the Apple FW driver causes a kernel panic during boot.
I isolated the problem to be my FW LaCie Speakers (attached through my cinema display 23"). I thought I have a conflict with something else, so I tried to make a clean installation but still, SL crashes when in 64 bit. No problem at all in 32 bit mode.
I'm really surprised as the kernel panic log shows the problem inside the Apple Audio FW driver...
Any ideas?
Thanks
GiuseppeI just tried to connect the speakers directly to the computer and the problem is gone... really surprised that the hub in the cinema display is causing this problem.

Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

THis morning when I came downstairs my iMac fans were roaring and I could not wake it up - after several minutes of trying I held the power key down to force poser off - when I restarted I got a kernel panic with the fans roaring before actually getting up and running
I force power offed again and this time it came up ok and ran until just a few minutes ago when I have another kernel panic
Here is the problem description from the error report to Apple
Anyone with any ideas on what to do to avoid continued kernel panics

LN -
Until today, Arch was running essentially fine on my laptop. Today, I had a kernel panic which forced me to cold reboot the machine. On reboot, I got more panics. I get panics whether I boot to runlevel 3, runlevel 5 or runlevel s. I get them with the lts kernel as well as the current one.
I even get kernel panics if I boot from the install usb I installed from in November.
The only boot which seems to work is booting finnix which is installed to a separate partition for emergency use.
fsck reports lots of errors. If I get it to fix one error, it finds more on the next run. Sometimes it will claim the fs is clean but fsck -fn says there are still errors. Sometimes fsck -f will give the partition a clean bill of health but if I repeat it, it will find new errors.
I have tried with fsck from finnix and fsck from the install media and from the system in single user mode. The latter two end with kernel panics.
smartctl finds no problems with the disk.
fsck also finds problems with my backups which are stored on an external drive. This drive was not attached when the original kernel panic occurred. It showed errors without any kernel panic occurring while it was connected. However, fscking it from the arch install media just caused another kernel panic.
At least, they look like kernel panics. I'm not sure whether they are or not because in some cases (not the original), I can switch to another tty. Just I very quickly get a crash there too once that has happened and commands tend to hang, especially disk related commands such as blkid or fsck, or give errors.
I desperately need advice. I have critical data on the drive. My backup is entirely current but since that too has errors, I'm not sure what to do for the best. So far, everything I've tried seems to have only made the situation worse - fsck, looking at the backup, booting from the install media...
Most fsck errors seem to concern incorrect inodes (it offers to clear them), inodes with illegal blocks (it offers to clear them), directory structure e.g. illegal characters in entries (it offers to fix them), incorrect references etc. In some cases, attempts to fix things don't seem to succeed: another run produces the same errors. In other cases, fsck wants to undo previous fixes on a second run e.g. for the same node it will say the reference count is 4 and should be 1 but if I let it fix that, on the next run it will say it is 1 but should be 4. I'm also getting "internal errors" due to missing information.
I'm ending up with a lot of things in lost+found...
The system is currently booted from the install media. I'm trying to shutdown as I'm on my fourth tty but it has hung trying to unmount filesystems.
Filesystems with errors are primarily ext4 because most of my filesystems are ext4.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Do I need to remake the kernel for boot using mkinitcpio? Or do I need to repopulate /boot/efi/efi/grub/? I see there's some sort of inconsistency about memory. I'm wondering if one bit of the system is working with stale data about the installed RAM that I need to somehow update while the other bit is detecting the available RAM "live" and getting a different answer (since I've basically pulled 2*4G of RAM and installed 1*2G from a different source.)
Edit: I was getting this before my system went nuts with my previous memory installed and no problems. So worrying though it may be, I don't think it is more worrying than usual...

Dear All,
I purchased my Macbook Air in the US in August 2011. Now it is only less than two years. Starting from two weeks ago, my Mac air starts to have the four language restart box very often. I took it to the Apple Genuis Bar and got my whole system clean reinstalled. Update all the software. But the problem happened again, and the four lanague restart box changes to a five lanague restrat box.
I did not install windows in my mac.
The first time that the panic happened when I waked my Mac up from sleeping. Later, the panic happens randomly, sometimes when I use Word, sometimes when I use safari. After I retalled the whole system, the panic happened twice when I tried to install new software, such as Itune.
I would be very grateful if anybody can give me an idea how to resolve the problem.

At the end of the restorement, the 5-lanague restart box appeared again. The technician told me that probably the hardware was broken down. He has seen six max air recently with kernel panics because of hardware problems.
I bought my mac air in the US in August 2011. Use it very carefully. Terribly, less than 2 years, it broke down. -
Kernel Panics when booted to external FW using 10.4.8
Using 10.4.7 things worked fine whether I booted on internal drive or external LaCie D2 FW
I upgraded to 10.4.8 on the PB G4 15", a PB G4 12" and an external LaCie 2D 3-port firewire
The PB 15" and the PB 12" work fine, read/write, etc and backed up the LaCie drive fine
Boot from either PB to the LaCie drive and I get a kernel panic (below) within seconds
- Problem exists with both PBs 12" & 15" (but I ran TechTool to make sure things (RAM, etc) are fine
- Reset PRAM and PMU
- Booted in Safe mode
- Ran Permissions update
- Reinstalled 10.4.8, then 10.4.8 combo
- Used disk Utility to repair disk, minor problems
- Eliminated all start up apps
Last night it would run for five minutes before panic, today, just boot to FW and panic will happen in 15 secs - no apps running
Sorry about the long logs, will edit them out after resolution
Flack

PB G4 15", PB G4 12" Mac OS X (10.4.8) LaCie 180GB FWUsing 10.4.7 things worked fine whether I booted on internal drive or external LaCie D2 FW

Security Update 2008-004 (PPC) caused kernel panic
I installed the Security Update 2008-004 (PPC) and Safari Update 3.1.2 and now I can't access my main startup drive +(the problem started immediately after I restarted my G4 after installing the Security Update 2008-004 -- I got the gray screen with the Apple logo, but it froze there and never got to the login screen).+
My G4 PowerBook (laptop) is running the update just fine -- no kernel panics.
I have a 2nd internal HD on my G4 (desktop) that I use for just such emergencies. The only difference is the 2nd HD does NOT have the Security Update 2008-004 (PPC) and Safari 3.1.2 update. +(Last security update was Security Update 2008-003.)+
I did gain access to my main startup HD at one point and it worked fine until I shut it down +(I unplugged all peripherals (FireWire and USB) and, somehow, got it to startup correctly, then I plugged everything back in).+
*But, the next day, I was back to square 1 when I didn't unplug all my peripherals.*
If I have to unplug everything to startup every time, then I'm going to yank my hair out!
The Mac OS Update software is surely to blame for the kernel panic, 'cause I don't have to do it for the 2nd HD without the 2008-004 Security Update.
Plus, once my G4 is up and running on the 2nd HD, I have total access to my main startup HD. TechTool Pro (v.4.1.1) found no problems with any of the files on it, including the Volumes and Finder Info files, which all tested free of any errors.
According to the not-so-helpful advice from "experts," I'll need to reinstall the MAC OS 10.4.x.
HOWEVER, I want to know if I start from my original DVD 10.4.3 install disk, what happens when I start installing all the updates, including the Security Updates?
*Do I STOP at Security Update 2008-003 (PPC)?*
Because I DON'T want to reinstall the OS or my applications over again and AGAIN!
Apple, PLEASE, fix this Security Update!Hi again!
I'd have been asleep maybe a few hours ago, if not for
the late fireworks (from 3 PM until about 12AM) - so,
I am awake and a bit peeved at the scofflaws blasting
many illegal fireworks near my second home in the city.
(Normally, I live in a mostly quiet and beautiful mountain
area that is very Alaska; the largest city is not so nice.)
Back to your inquiry; if you start up in SafeBoot (hold
shift key down until you get Login screen and it says
SafeBoot; then login) and repair disk permissions
before installing the Combo 10.4.11 update, as a
standalone download file with the package on the
desktop; it should work.
Whether or not it would actually resolve the issue is
yet another matter. There could be an underlying
problem which may be better resolved if you could
make a bootable complete computer drive clone
of the hard disk drive contents, and either see if
a third party utility can scan and fix the hard disk
drive (if it is the problem) or you could get a new
one; and then -either way- clone back the system
onto a new or repaired hard disk drive.

The issues in kernel panics and their resolutions
are generally and more specifically covered in a
few steps that involve troubleshooting; not any
one may be the 'answer' yet the issue may be
solved after trying several things. If the kernel
panic is the real problem and not a symptom.

Notes on 'Journal-related Kernel Panics' in Tiger:

(The odds of needing this are slim; and I am not
familiar with the process or need to do this.)
Something to read through & consider carefully:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=kernelpanic+after+security+update+Tiger+10.4&btnG=GoogleSearch
{There may be some other hardware or ?? cause
behind the kernel panics and so it would be a
good idea to have a clone of your drive's content
on a bootable external FireWire enclosed HDD.
-I like mine, it has its own power supply and is
not reliant on the USB or FireWire to get power
from the computer; which could be faulty...}
Good luck & happy computing!
