How to Determine which DIMM to Replace Given Kernel Panic Report
I have a dual cpu, mid-2010 Mac Pro with 32GB of Kingston RAM (8 4gb modules). Once a week or so, it suffers a kernel panic that appears to be caused by a RAM problem. Here is a typical one:

They all point to DIMM 0, Channel 1, and indicate addresses like 0x00000004xxxxxxxx. My question is: If I am interested in replacing the suspect DIMM, which one is it?
In the User Guide, it indicates I have 8 memory slots, organized in two chunks, each chunk adjacent to a cpu. The diagram says that Slots 1-4 are adjacent to one CPU, and Slots 5-8 are adjacent to the other. I, of course, filled all of them myself. System Profiler tells me about DIMMs 1-8. The kernel panic report seems to tell me that DIMM 0 is to blame, perhaps DIMM 0 in Channel 1. Here is a representation of the slot layout in the User Guide:
slot 5 CPU
slot 6 slot 4
slot 7 slot 3
slot 8 slot 2
CPU slot 1
latch latch
where the bottom of the diagram is toward the side of the tray that has the latches that release the tray. The form of answer I'd like to see is something like: Replace the DIMM in Slot 1. Or perhaps: Replace the DIMMs in slot 1 and slot 5.Perhaps I wasn't clear. The Genius *did* look it up - it took him about 5 actual minutes - and he said that all he could tell was that it was a memory error of some sort. I was asking him specifically what the 4 and 66 meant as well as the hex number. And with a ton of google I was unable find much about it.
I know quite a lot about how to eventually find the bad DIMM, if there is one. The machine in question is used heavily for Photoshop, InDesign, audio editing, some video editing, and programming, and if the memory failures (or memory controller errors) were more frequent, I would engage in classical isolation techniques - and I probably will have to. It simply seemed to me that the information I need is in the kernel panic logs. -
What does this Kernel Panic report mean? What can I do?
Hi,
I've had my MacBook (Late 2013 Retina 15" MacBook Pro) crash a few times, resulting in a kernel panic. I know a fair share about software, programming, website but I know absolutely nothing about crashing, etc.. All I know is that it crashed very suddenly, resulting in a grey screen talling me a Kernel Panic had occurred.
I was hoping someone could make anything out from this? I saw current thread was 'Skype' but I wasn't using it at the time, it was just in the background. This has happened before and I may not have been using it then. (It's not set to open at boot.) I was using a weather app ("Living Earth") at the moment it crashed but I only installed that yesterday and it's crashed before then.
Here's the Kernel Panic Report from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.

As I say, it's happened a few times before (twice recently but also a while ago).
I'd be really thankful if anyone could share some light on this.I have noticed this. One time it crashed when using a video app such as VLC, and another time when changing desktops between an app playing a video and say Skype or Google Chrome (I can't be sure which).
Here's some more information about my Mac if it helps:
Operating System: OS X 10.9.2 (Mavericks) 13C64
Model: Apple Late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro 15"
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 16GB 1600MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1024MB
I've noticed that my case is similar to some people's in this thread. -
Help deciphering Mac Pro kernel panic report
Hi all,
my Mac Pro (early 2009, quad core 2.93GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285) has experienced some kernel panics with automated restarts (8 in total) over the past couple weeks. All panic logs show hardware errors of the "Read ECC" kind, though the affected cores vary (3x CPU 0, 2x CPU 2, 1x each CPU 4, 6 and 7). I am hoping that it's only one of the DIMMs gone bad (I was thinking about upgrading the RAM anyway), but I fear it might be the mem controller, one of the caches or the CPU itself.
There seem to be quite a few knowlegable people around, so can you please have a look at the panic log and give me a hint towards the culprit? Would be much appreciated.
Best regards, Armin

0xffffff80d08e5f30 : 0xffffff80034bThe Mac Pro's Xeon Processors feature Hardware Error Correction, and use Error Correcting Code memory.
Eight additional check bits (called Syndrome bits) are stored with each word in RAM memory. When Read out, the data and the syndrome are used together to detect and correct errors.
Single-bit errors are corrected on-the-fly with essentially no slowdown is processing speed.
Uncorrectable errors such as most double-bit errors cause a Kernel panic by design, to halt the machine and keep errors from propagating into your data.
Your kernel panic does indeed show the characteristics of an uncorrectable RAM memory error. The likelihood that the problem is caused by any of the other failures you listed is vanishingly small.

Kernel panic report help 10.6.8
Hey everyone,
I know this is a common issue, so I apologize if there is a more appropriate place to post this. My 2008 Macbook core 2 duo has been giving me the gray lock up screen for about a year now, and I'm not sure why. Here is the panic report from the last time it happened (today). I haven't seen a correlation to anything specific, but possibly when downloading larger files. I've switched browsers and reset them. I also replaced the two 1gig ram sticks with 2 gig's.

In that case don't use safe mode. Instead uninstall the Symantec software using their universal uninstaller. If the panics continue then try uninstalling the Cisco software.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:
1. AppZapper 2.0.1
2. AppDelete 3.2.6
3. Automaton 1.50
4. Hazel
5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
6. CleanApp
7. iTrash 1.8.2
8. Amnesia
9. Uninstaller 1.15.1
10. Spring Cleaning 11.0.1

Can someone read this report and help me figure out why this kernel panic occurs? thanks, Kendall

Need help deciphering a kernel panic report
Last night, right after watching an iTunes movie, my mini had a kernel panic, the first ever. It was very hot to the touch.
This is the model I have: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac-mini-core-2-duo-2.4-mid -2010-specs.html. It's standard except for the memory, which is maxed out at 16GB. It's running Snow Leopard and has never given me a moment of grief until last night.
This is the report. Any help locating the source of the panic is appreciated:

Thanks again. -
Just had my macbook pro crash on me while editing some pretty important shiz in FCP. Had 2 G-Raid externals, a FreeAgent GoFlex external, and one external monitor hooked up to it. Hoping someone can help identify the problem because I can't understand these reports to save my life. Thanks!

FireWire Device: OEM ATA Device 00, G-TECH, Up to 800 Mb/secThe panic is related to the Paragon software. But it could be more of a problem with all the third-party stuff you have running. A Firewire drive may have been involved.
You will likely need to uninstall all the third-party stuff in order to start tracking down the problem one by one. You should also verify that all the third-party stuff is up to date. For example, VM Fusion is now in version 4 or 5 but you are using 2.x. Little Snitch is 2.5.4, and Paragon's NTFS software is version 10.
Updating may be helpful to solving panic issues. -
Kernel Panic Reporting A Kernel Panic!
With Tiger, I experienced not one kernel panic. About a month after using Leopard, I experienced my first kernel panic. I was playing World of Warcraft at the time (which is known to have some installation issues with case-senstive file systems) so I blew it off as an extraordinary case. And indeed I haven't seen a kernel panic since.
Until just now. I was doing nothing other than listening to music on iTunes when the POW! the little multi-lingual window pops up with the power button symbol background. So I reboot and login as admin. Leopard immediately says that the computer quit unexpectedly and asks to report an issue to Apple.
WHILE I'M FILLING OUT THE REPORT mind you, another kernel panic before I could even submit the report. I had to fish out my cell phone and take a screen shot. http://www.lemings.com/mac/01-14-08_1314.jpg
Boy, Apple really took a step back with the kernel from Tiger to Leopard. JMHO.please launch the console, hopefully you paid attention to the date and the time and copy that console message , look at crash reports, panic reports, etc and the next time you get the "report to Apple dialogue" include the console message.
I got exactly that one you described just before Xmas and the console mesaage seems to relate to the video card and or Quicktime. I sent in the report and hopefully if a new update comes, it will be fixed. -
Can someone translate this short kernel panic report for me?
I got this after my internet suddenly went down (Safari stopped loading pages, but my Adium messenger was still working). And then, I think, the internet for my area went down (snow storm) and I'm hoping this kernel panic had something to do with that and not with defective hardware. Here it is below:

com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily 1.3.0A crash generally (not always) is due to some problematic software, and that software is usually something the user (you) installs. In this case you added some stuff that added a bunch of drivers (kexts) to your system. From your above crash display:
com.devguru.driver.SamsungACMData 1.2.32
com.huawei.driver.HuaweiDataCardActivateDriver 1.0.2
com.huawei.driver.HuaweiDataCardDriver 4.12.00
com.huawei.driver.HuaweiDataCardECMData 1.14.00
com.huawei.driver.HuaweiDataCardECMControl 1.13.00
com.huawei.driver.HuaweiDataCardACMData 4.02.00
Those become the immediate first suspects which should be uninstalled to see if they are the cause of the crash because kexts can easily crash your system due to the environment they run in. In the above list there appears to be two pieces of software you installed to produce that list; the huawei stuff and the devguru stuff.
So it was suggested above they first uninstall the huawei stuff to see if you still crash. If you don't then uninstall the devguru stuff. Hopefully you won't crash and maybe you could reinstall the huawei stuff.
Also hopefully that software comes with its own uninstallers. -
Ram related kernel panics on a MBP (ram used to work, hardware errors-)
hello all
i have a 2.2GHZ intel core duo 2007 MBP, which once ran Tiger and is now running 10.6.3
I had the NVDIA graphic card break down associated with such models, and it was replaced thanks to the extended care plan, here in Paris, so the logicboard is new- I also got a (technician installed) new HDD, and snowleopard
I originally had the 2 1Gig ram, but 1st got an extra 2Gb of danelec ram, and finally another 2GB- it ran fine for a couple year or so-
then, a few months back I recently started getting kernel panics, on tiger- I fist thought they were HDD related, got a new drive installed by a technician, switched to snow leopard-
yet they continue, and they're apparently RAM related, yet what is odd is that they can be reproduced with any RAM combination involving 2 sticks- the original apple 1Gb + any of the two GB ram sticks, the 2GB ram sticks together in any slot-- it's all the same, the screen goes grey and i'm told to shut down the computer
with one ram stick it works, this avoids the issue- but not always
i've moved the ram around, checked the slots, reset the PRAM,yet the issue is still there.
now i know that I should be using paired ram, and will do so in the next coming months when I can afford it- yet what has happened to make the make the MBP seemingly refuse two sticks of RAM when it didn't before ? are the two sticks dead ? or is there an issue with the slot ?
I'd also need to know that this is not a logicboard issue if it's possible- the logic board was changed due to the NVDIA bug, so it's a year old or so-
I'm running it on the 2GB danelec as I type, no issue, the samsung ram works as well, and so does the 1GB apple ram, in any slot, yet two slots of ram causes the kernel panic crash- the area near the ram slot also seems to get very hot-
I ran the hardware test yesterday, booting from the tiger dvd, which was difficult (possible drive issue)
finally managed to boot into hardware test mode (must be a superdrive issue)
running an extended test with the 4GB of ram in there
first pass found an error :
4MEM/9/40 000 000 : bc13950
running the extended testing
extended testing (1h39 min)
no errors found
ran another quick test
error
4MEM/9/40 000 000 : 6b506C4
another quick test :
no trouble found
another : no trouble found
and a last pass : no trouble found
but i did have two errors...
looking the errors up online didn't give anything so far, any clue as to what might be wrong here ? the RAM used to work fine (i've been using these two sticks for over two years), the kernel panics started happening on tiger- got a new HD drive a month ago, installed snow leopard, - used disk warrior and disk utilities, reset the PRAM and did the other tests and it continues- wether i'm running the computer from the internal drive or an external firewire drive-
running the hardware test, i also got two error messages, but on some passes only
if i look into the RAM status through about this mac, it says it's ok - what's odd is that the hardware test found errors, but not systematically----- I'd really like to know what the error message mean, can anyone help ?
i'm getting more and more kernel panics, unfortunately i live in France, so things are slightly less simple than they would be in other places customer servicewise- ie it might not be as simple as showing up at the new apple stores with this 2007 machine--
I need a stable machine to work on and really can't afford repairs at the moment
i'm really stuck with this, my finances got sucked into the last HDD upgrade (got it done by an official apple retailer, ICLG here in Paris, cost me 300 euros), and I thought things would be stable for a while since the logic board was changed (free of charge, which was a great relief) less than a year ago due to the nvdia bug- and now here I am with this--
anyway, here's the last kernel panic report i got, thanks in advance for your help

G5 "Q87" Dual 2.7GHz - Persistent Kernel Panic
Hello All,
I have a Power Mac G5 (trusty old pro audio box) which has been experiencing regular Kernel Panics (grey screen of death) for the past month or so.
I'm wondering if it might be the Logic Board or something having to do in particular with either the SATA or memory areas which might be having the trouble.
My G5's specs and latest Kernel Panic report are as follows:
Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7 GHz "Q87 970fx" model | 8GB | 1TB HD | 10.4.11
RME 9632 PCI based audio interface. (connected to Lexicon PCM 80 via S/PDIF which coincides with the Kernel Panics but may be a coincidence?)
The Kernel Panic mainly happens whenever I save a large group of samples in Native Instruments Kontakt 3.5 or when playing back large (usually orchestral) multi-instrument sample presets in Wave Editor or other audio editing programs. Crashes also occur whenever large audio files (300MB+) are loaded or are being edited/converted.
Can anyone decipher the meaning of the Kernel Panic report? I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.

I ran Rember and there were some test failures. It doesn't look like the program is able to tell me which DIMM is bad so I'll probably have to go by process of elimination, right?
I'm still hoping to find Apple Hardware Test and/or Apple Service Diagnostic for this particular machine and I'll try other memory test programs as well. For anyone who's interested, here are the results of the memory test by Rember. Perhaps someone could tell by looking which DIMM it might be?

I have kernel panic too! but for a different reason...
hey all
my macbook has recently started experiencing kernel panic and i cant figure out why.
the first time it happened i used disk utility to verify the hard drive. DU said the hard drive needed to be repaired. i tried to boot up from the OSX 10.4 disk that came with my computer, but my computer wouldnt boot. so i booted up from disk warrior instead. i rebuilt the directory, ran the hardware check (no probs reported) and had DW check all files and folders. DW reported one corrupt .plist file. (i have looked at every single .plist file in the folder DW told me to but the corrupt file is nowhere to be found.) however, when i booted up normally and ran disk utility again DU said my hard drive was fine.
then kernel panic struck again. did a little research and found apple jack. ran all 5 of apple jack scripts and AJ also said all is well.
kernel panic again. used cleanapp to delete some old programs and empty caches. manually deleted about 80% of .plist files hoping that one of them would be the corrupt one. DW still reports one corrupt .plist file. so i decide to wipe the computer and do a clean install of 10.4. but when i try to open the OSX installer (from the disk that came with my computer) i get a message that says 10.4 cant be installed on this computer... that it isnt compatible. ***?
more research and this time decide on tech tools pro. run every test TTP has to offer and everything checks out fine.
so... now i dont know what to do. and my computer just had kernel panic again this morning. i pasted the report from it below. i dont know enough to tell if theres anything in there that explains whats wrong with my computer.
can anyone out there help me? in the very least can anyone tell me how to get my computer to recognize that it is compatible with 10.4 so i can erase everything and start again?
bah! this *****. thx in advance for any help you can give...

Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
May be a solution on one of these links.

MacPro + Inspire 1394 = Kernel Panic
Hello there,
I'm experiencing an issue with a Mac Pro (2.66 GHz) running Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.1) and the Inspire 1394 box (it's an external sound card that you connect to your Mac with a FireWire 400 cable). Each time I plug it into the Mac Pro, it produces a Kernel Panic. But if you shut the computer down, plug the Inspire box and restart the Mac, nothing bad happens.
I'm looking for a fix though, because, as I remember, FireWire is ment to be plug & play, not shutdown, plug, restart and finally play. As I was still running Tiger, there was no Kernel Panic.
Also note that there's no specific driver needed for using the Inspire 1394, as it's compatible with Core Audio.
Here's the Kernel Panic Report:

I hope that Apple will fix this soon (in 10.5.2 please ?).Yep, not consistently, but happens enough to cause major problems. It happened almost right out of the box, as soon as I finished installing Logic 8, crash... Brought my firepod directly to presonus, had some sort of bad chip which they replaced. Thought that would totally fix it, not as many panics but it is still there.
It does seem to be mostly associated with wake from sleep, but not always as some of the other threads have pointed out.
This has never happened with my powerbook, running logic since 2005.
