Hi, I have recently upgraded to 10.9.3 and since then I have been experiencing kernel panic (total of 7 as of this writing).
What could be causing this? Below is the crash report...

Kernel panics are almost always the result of outdated or incompatible system modifications or incompatible hardware.
Silex is a likely candidate for removal. Research its documentation for details.
Soundflower appears in many kernel panic reports. The latest version was written for Leopard, three major OS X releases ago, and its support forum is moribund.
One or both of them are probably the cause.

Six kernel panics since installing Lion
So I've had six kernel panics since installing Lion on my sandy bridge MBP. Usually running safari, mail, and excel when they occur. Weird third-party process or something? I actually don't have many applications installed on this computer. Any thoughts?
Perhaps this has something to do with it but I don't know, when looking at my login items there's a flag next to iTunesHelper. I don't know what the flag means.
ThanksThe flag simply means hide this application after it automatically launches. It should have nothing to do with your kernal panic. You need to post the relevant log message for folks to analyse.
There are others who can help with that; I'm not really good at reading the logs.
Although it shouldn't be responsible, you might want to take gfxCardStatus out of your startup just in case. You can always put it back in if that's not the culprit. Others have used it without any kernal panics, so it's probably a bad WAG.

Help! Kernel panics since 10.5.3
Hi all,
I have noticed a fair amount of posts on this forum about kernel panics since installing 10.5.3, and very few responses to those problems. I wonder what is going on with 10.5.3.
I installed it a couple of weeks ago and things were running okay, but now I keep getting kernel panics or a frozen computer and having to restart. I posted about it but got no responses. I noticed in the log that it mentioned Mouseworks, so I looked it up and discovered that some people have had problems with their kensington mouse mouseworks so I uninstalled the mouseworks application . Now I got another kernel panic and this time it is about Safari. So I don't think its about a particular application, but I don't know. I did permissions repair and it repaired two permissions I think -- or at least reported a problem with them but didn't say whether it repaired them. I did disk verify and it said everything was ok.
Here are my logs.
Can anyone help or give any suggestions what I should do?
thanks,
Katarina

Hi, ever since I installed leopard my computer keeps freezing. and it has now done it twice in the last day. I did a permissions repair and it is still doing it. My powerbook is old and was inherited and I am thinking of replacing it, but would like to know if it is something wrong with the computer or with conflicting programs, before bothering to replace it. Its a G4 1.67 GHz with 768 MB ram and 74.41 GB of which 30.31 are available.
I'm not very computer savvy and could really use some help figuring out what is going on. Here are the alerts that the computer posted when the system quit. I hope one of you more knowledgeable people can tell me whats going on.
thanks so much,
Katarina

Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.5.3)I'd suggest uninstalling the Kensington Mouseworks software. Replace it with SteerMouse - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
AppZapper
CleanApp
Yank
SuperPop
Uninstaller
Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Kernel panic since i bought my powerbook G4 (end 2005)
Hello,
I am desperate : i have had kernel panics since i bought my powerbook G4. I describe the kernel panic as a grey square that appears in the middle of the screen telling me to force my mac to quit in many languages. I have tried the apple care online call, then i have erased everything from my powerbook and reinstalled the system as applecare advised me to do. It continued. Then i went to ITechnique in Montreal to get some experts to analyse it, they didnt see nothing. Then i started to have these strange blackout screens, and these noises that was telling me that my mac is trying to reboot with no sucess. Everytime these black screens happens i have to force my mac to quit and it happens more and more. Then i gave it back to ITechnique, still they didnt see nothing. Then i want to Carrefour Laval, they took my powerbook for 1 week time to check it ; they didnt see nothing. So i proposed them to photograph and to film all my problems, after they had changed my macs memory. One week later i had 6 photos of kernel panics that i took in 2 weeks time + 4 to 5 black out screens filmed. I went back to Carrefour Laval to the genius bar and now they believed that there are problems on my mac and they want to replace hardware and many other things on my machine?!!!! What are the solutions? My applecare finishes july 2008, i am a graphic designer, i cant sell this useless machine like this, but i need to buy a new one. Do you think applecare could replace my machine? Are they other persons who has had the same problems with a Powerbook G4 bought in october 2005? Are they persons who has had their computer replaced by the applecare? Thank you very much!designerj:
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You should not be having the issues you are having, and, in any case, if you have Apple Care the issue should have been resolved. I believe that you have done all that you could be reasonably expected to do.
I suggest that you call Apple Customer Relations and tell them exactly what your have detailed here. Offer to send documentation of your issue. And tell them that since your issue continues and you need your computer for your work, that you would like to have them resolve the issue by their replacing the computer with a new one. Be very polite. If you run into an agent who is unresponsive or rude (and I have heard reports of such), thank them politely, hang up, and call back later and hope to get someone else. If all esle fails, send a letter to Apple detailing both your technical issues as well as the difficulties you have experienced getting help.
Good luck.

Kernel panic since upgrade to core. Unable to mount root fs on
kernel panic : not syncing; VFS; Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)
I get that error since I upgraded archlinux to the latest version. The last time I upgraded before that was while the repos was still named current. Since I upgraded to core that happened.
What should I do? How could I fix this? I have this problem on the fallback kernel too.
Last edited by sokuban (2007-09-23 01:49:57)Hello All,
I have two hard drives installed in my pc, one is ATA and the other one is a SATA.
ATA is /dev/sda 200GB
SATA os /dev/sdb 40GB
I have installed arch linux onto sdb. grub also is installed to sdb.
Whenever I do a pacman -Syu and reboot I get the kernel panic not synching attempted to kill init error message at boot
I then boot the pc using the fallback image and copied the fallback config to /etc/mkinicpio.conf and ran mkinitcpio -p kernel26 and rebooted. everything works fine. but just running the command pacman -Syu and rebooting will end up with the same problem. though pacman -Syu does not install any updates. what is it that I'm doing wrong?
Thanks

Frequent kernel panics since upgrade to 10.8.5
Hi
I bought myself a new iMAC recently and since the upgrade to 10.8.5 I've been getting a kernal panic almost every day. The dealer took it back to run lots of diags and came back with 'no problem with the hardware' so I'm looking for something else. I've disconnect all peripherals except my Epson printer, but still no joy.
Anyone able to help point me in the right direction? Thx in advance.

Here's today's crash - is there a part of this dump that you are able to flag that might help them diagnose? The only thing I can think of is they suggested I used 3rd party RAM rather than Apple RAM when I said I wanted to fully load the iMAC. Does the log show an issue there?

Multiple daily kernel panics since upgrade to Snow Leopard
Hi, all,
I upgraded to Snow Leopard early last week, and on average have about 3 kernel panics per day. (I haven't had any on this Macbook in the last 6 months of owning it). It's really starting to get on my nerves, and I can't figure out what may be doing it. I've been trying to read up on all the different kernel panic pages listed throughout the forums, but haven't been able to pin it down to anything yet. I figured I'd post the kernel panic report and see if anyone notices anything fishy. Thanks for the help!

com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily 1.3.0Just had my first Snow Leopard kernel panic as well. It looks like the description of the possible cause is identical.
As far as I can see, the main difference (besides the different loaded kexts) is the message: "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: CIJScannerRegist" Does anyone know what that means?

The very day I upgraded my iMac 27" to Mountain Lion, I started getting kernel panics. After enough panics, my disk gets corrupted and I have had to reinstall (thank you Time Machine). I eventually punted and took the machine to my local authorized dealer who also does support (no Apple stores near here). They couldn't help. Their advice was to reinstall the OS, restore from Time Machine with no apps, and reinstall them. Well, I was in the process of doing that. I had erased my disk, reinstalled Mountain Lion (takes forever with no local disk), and restored my data only from Time Machine; no applications.
A few hours later... kernel panic. The panics have nearly all come after I wake the machine from sleep. This last time, the screen saver (just the generic one that ships w/the os) had all kinds of pixellation on it before it went back to the OS, the drive thrashed for about a minute, and then the panic.
I have no kernel extensions now (kextstate | grep -v apple returns no results).
I've copied in the kernel panic log if anybody can help.

I didn't quite go all the way down to nothing, but after waking it from several sleep sessions, it didn't panic. I had only my external drives attached. However, when waking from sleep, it was thrashing pretty hard. I unmounted the drives, and disconnected the firewire cable, and voila, that went away.
I'll run like this for the rest of the day to see what I get; waking it up periodically as if I were going to use it for something other than browsing :-)
I'm kinda pointing loosely pointing my finger at the d2 Quadra drive. I had problems with that drive when I bought it. I had to open a support issue w/Lacie, and they came out with a firmware upgrade based on what I reported. The issue was that it was not waking from sleep with the rest of the machine. I have to wonder if whatever they changed doesn't play nice with Mountain Lion.
And thinking about it, the only time the techs were able to get this thing to panic was the day after I brought them my Time Machine backup (which is on the Lacie drive) so they could test with my data again. My boot drive had gotten corrupted yet again after the last panic before I took it in.
So, I guess I should ask. Is anybody else running a d2 Quadra v3 2GB Firewire drive on an older iMac with Mountain Lion? -
Internet kernel panics since Tiger upgrade
Last Friday (9/9) I upgraded my eMac from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.2, and added memory (purchased from Apple), increasing from 256 to 768 MB. Since then I have experienced kernel panics four times while connected to the Internet (Safari) via built-in cable modem (I use dial-up, 56k modem). Anyway, I think it's a kernel panic-- gray screen descends and says I must restart computer using power button; when I restart, message appears saying: "The computer was restarted after MAC OS X quit unexpectedly." On a few other occasions, my modem is disconnecting and I have to dial up again. Anyone have any ideas what might be going on and what I can do to solve the problem?
JMVP: I did update Safari; as far as Java, I was downloading update via my dial-up with 56k modem; with only about 7 minutes remaining (after a nearly two-hour download) the modem disconnected, so I have to start from scratch tomorrow. The install disk for Tiger was for 10.4, then I used Software Update to download 10.4.2 Combo Updater and did permissions repair.
Someone at my office suggested that perhaps the newly-installed memory module is defective; I guess that's a possibility, but my guess is that the odds are small that Apple would ship a defective module (or am I naive?) Guess my first step will be to remove the new module and see if computer runs smoothly. I hope it does; at least I'll know what the problem is. I fear, however, problems will persist and I'll be back to Square 1.
One other thing, I noticed that since Tiger/memory installation, when I put the computer to sleep a small but very bright flash of light is emitted in the center of the screen just as computer enters sleep mode. I'm certain this never used to occur. Wonder what that's all about. -
Constant kernel panics since upgrade to 10.4.4. help!
Well ive just spent the past 3 hours trying to figure out exactly what went wrong with my iBook, but it was Kernel Panicing like crazy. I couldnt even get online long enough to make a post about it.
Lets recap.
I updated to 10.4.4
Several hours later the Mac crashes for the first time since I switched 3 months ago.
It crashes again.
Kernel panic!
More kernel panics!
So as soon as I logged in, I created a dummy account then rebooted with it. The dummy account would crash too so I knew that it was a system problem. This leads me to believe it was 10.4.4
I did an archive and install.
No luck
Any thoughts? I have not installed any hardware. Its as it was prebuilt. It cant be a hardware problem.
I installed shapeshifter several weeks ago and uninstalled it about 4 days ago.
I did repair permissions after updating.
Here is the crash report:

Either your Airport software is way out of date or your Airport card may not be properly seated or has failed. So the first thing to do is remove the Airport card. If the panics cease, then reinstall the Airport card and see what happens. If it panics again, then remove the Airport card.
The next thing I would do is:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The next thing I would do is download the 10.4.4 Combo Updater and reinstall the update. Then reinstall the Airport card and see if it works properly.
I would suggest that before installing the update that you first boot into safe mode. -
Here is a sample of the last Panic I had. Please advise.

Constant kernel panics since Mavericks update
Hardware is a mid 2010 MAcBook Pro 15", i7 2,66ghz, 8 GB RAM, 512 MB Video RAM.
I encounter regular kernel panics for a while now, I think since upgrading to Mavericks. Usually it used to happen every now and then, between once a week and once a month. So I did not really worry in the beginning. As it started getting on my nerves and neither volume repair nor hard ware test did indicate anything wrong, I decided to do a clean install of the latest Mavericks version a few days ago to see if that helps. kernel panics are still there and with the update to 10.9.3. today it seems even worse. I already had two kernel panics today, which make it four this week.
Attached is the latest kernel panic log:

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be or how to track it down? Might the video card or kernel extension be the problem? Any help would be highly appreciated.Seems I found an answer via another forum:
The kernel panic indicates that your GPU is failing. This is a known issue for your machine. Your model is subject to a replacement program for the logicboard due to a defective GPU. It lasts 3 years from the date of purchase.
I am in contact with apple and might take it into a retail store for further diagnostics. -
[SOLVED] Troubleshooting kernel panics since 3.4
All kernel versions since 3.4 have been absolutely unstable on my machine. A panic might happen right during bootup, or if it boots up, there will be random segfaults all over the place, followed by a panic no later than 20 minutes or so from bootup. I have been forced to use kernel 3.3.7-1-ck, which runs perfectly fine. I haven't done any particularly rigorous diagnostics of the problem because watching the system fail repeatedly is not very fun when I can just revert to a working setup. However, these are the observations I've come up with over the months:
- a typical panic dump looks like this (although the "spurious ACK" like is new - in the few other screenshots I've got there is nothing prior to the hardware errors, or the first line is no longer on screen);
- it happens with the same symptoms on LiveCDs - I've tried Arch 2012.10.06, Ubuntu 12.10 and Mint 14.1 disks, all panicking during bootup or shortly afterwards (Arch 2010.05 loads fine);
- I've run Memtest overnight since the problems started and it came up clean;
- as mentioned, kernel 3.3.7 works fine, as does Windows 7 that I double-boot with;
- it is not GPU related - I previously had other problems with Radeon HD4850 and suspected it might be involved here, but the problem persists after a recent upgrade to GTX 650Ti;
- going by my pacman.log, I've definitely tried using (and then reverted to 3.3.7) kernels 3.4.2-1, 3.4.3-1, 3.4.4-2, 3.5.2-1, 3.6.3-1, 3.7.1-3, 3.7.4-1 from repo-ck, as well as other versions from core repo that I can't reliably keep track of;
- system info:
Motherboard: Asus P5Q-E
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8400
RAM: 5GB in 3 sticks (2+2+1)
GPU: GTX 650Ti (Radeon HD4850 until a few weeks ago)
Storage: 2 SATA HDDs, 1 SATA SSD
IDE optical drive
Sound card: Creatve Audigy LS
External devices: PS/2 keyboard, USB mouse, USB Wacom Bamboo tablet, USB external HDD
Any suggestions how to further investigate and/or solve this problem are welcome. I'll be happy to provide any other information that might be useful.
EDIT: blacklisting acpi-cpufreq module did the trick.

First of all, it appears that 3.7.4 doesn't recognize CPU frequency right, showing 670 MHz instead of 3 GHz. Also, 3.7.4 has a "dtherm" flag instead of "dts". No idea what to make of it.
@mich41: thanks for the suggestion. I may try that later, when I have a bigger block of time to spare. -
Kernel panics after OS X Mavericks upgrade
I am running a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 with self upgraded 8GB of RAM.
I installed OS X Mavericks the day it was released. Since then, I have had various kernel panics, occuring about two days of each other. When it happened today, it was like the entire OS restarted, in the fact that some settings, such as wallpaper were reset. I read that non-Apple RAM can cause this, but I don't know if it's the only culprit. When each kernel panic occurred, I was watching Netflix with one other tab opened, nothing super heavy going on with the computer.
Any insight or help is appreciated.same issue here.. :-(
