Kernel panic software or hardware?
I bought a brand new macbook Pro 13" that came with snow leopard 10.6.4, after 2 month of using it i start getting Kernel Panic, i didn´t know what was it so when i took it to apple store they said that the hard drive was corrupted so they change it, a week later i start getting Kernel panic again, they have done test of software and hardware and they found nothing so they said it must be a program that a installed that caused it, is that possible? when i got my computer back i only installed skype and yahoo msn and i end up getting kernel panic too, (can skype or yahoo msn can cause kernel panic?), apple store is not being much help because they said its software so i don't know what else to do.
this is the error i get so i will happy if somebody know what this means:

i have tried all this so far:
1) run the fsck pressing command +option S key
2) i have done option + command + R + P
3) i have run the disc pressing C key and check the softward, sometimes i get nothing and sometimes i get that some volume folder has move but it fixed it.
4) i have run the disk pressing D and sometimes i get nothing and sometimes i get this hardward error 4MEM/9/40000000:0XA9F75D18, apple said that that hardware error was cause because of a softward problems, is it possible?.
5) i have reinstall the Mac OS X software again without deleting the information i have, all the softward its up to date.
6) i have install Onyx and do check the softward all the time.
Another thing is that before they change the hard drive i also have problem with internet, apple store have check my airport card and they said its works fine, that i had that problem because of the driver, but i have notice something that on the internet bar signal some times i get a full signal but but internet runs slow, i told them that and they said that the bar signal shows that you have internet thats all and not the potential of the signal, is it true????
i will appreciate your help guys. thanks in advance.

IMac kernel panic -- rule out hardware and software! any ideas?
Greetings forum
I am totally at a loss on what to do next. Im writing about a mid 2010 27 inch iMac recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. Shortly after this the computer started to experience issues of rebooting itself as clicking apps such as safari. So began the troubleshooting process!
First tried clean install -- ie format HD and internet recover install
everything installed fine and then restart issue again as it experience kernel panic
ruling out the Software I was convinced it was a memory hardware issue so I booked appt at genius bar and took it in-- the computer was there for 4 days and the tech said they did extensive testing and could find nothing wrong with the hardware tests!! and they had no advice other than to try a fresh install (again)
I took it home and let it sit for a couple of months as I didnt want to bother with it right away
So I pulled it out again yesterday and decided to do a fresh install after format -- again within 5 min in kernel panicd! This time i think I was searching in safari. BELOW is the crash report
I also decided to load up the diagnostic tool off my iMac disk to test hardware (did the extended test TWICE) and NO TROUBLE FOUND (see photo)

Kernel Panic, Software Updates, Worth 104.8 Update?
Hi, hope someone can give me some advice.
We have been using a few GS’s runiing 10.4.7 for good few months now with no major problem. The predominate application used is FCP (5.1.2). We have been keeping the machine up-to-date via software update from the start. We have tended to do the updates on one machine and the follow with the rest a week or so later if there haven’t been any problems regarding updates.
Until now.
Today we have had multiple kernel panics on the a good percentage of the machines.
This is the lastest from one of them.

It maybe a coincidence but yesterday we did a software
-up-date on the rest of the machine after testing it on two machine which had no problems.
It was not a major update the application where,
iMovie
Grageband
iPhoto
iWeb
pages.
All up to the latest versions.
The only reaming update via software update the 10.4.8 update which we have help off from doing.
Could these last updates being causing the problems?
Would it be worth updating one of the machines that has experienced the problem to 10.4.8 to see if the continue?
Or are we missing something?
Any advice on this would be great.
Thanks
G5 Quad, Mac Book Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)Your kernel panics are not caused by third-party software and is most likely hardware.
Things you can try
Boot into Recovery and Repair the disk
Reset PRAM/NVRAM: OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
Reset SMC (as you seem to have possible sleep problems): Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
You can try to check the RAM with Remember. http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/
Another way to check is to remove one stick and test, then swap. However, 2GB might not be enough to do what you want on the Mac. If it always happens on wake from sleep, then it could be a quick test. -
Kernel panic leads to hardware replacement
I've been having troubles with kernel panics throughout the day... I've followed every step from zapping pram to following step-by-steps AppleCare techies have given me.
Problem is: nothing has worked, so I need to take it in to be looked at.
I'm 99 percent certain it's a hardware problem, which, I read, can be costly.
However, I bought my iBook in December 2005 and bought the extended warranty. Will my warranty cover any hardware replacement?
I'm a poor college student; and if it's going to cost me I've got to weigh out what I value most, my iBook or my plasma.
Thanks to anyone who can help.If you're under your warranty still and you haven't done anything crazy with your iBook like spilling liquids on it or dropping it, then Apple will repair your iBook for no cost.

Macbook Pro - Kernel Panic and then Hardware Error!
Hi,
So I just went through major stress of going through my first kernel panic with my 21 month old 15" 2.2GHz MacBook Pro. The screen suddenly became pixelated and then shut down, went through the whole "You need to restart your computer..." screen a million times when I tried to restart it, but had to do a lot of force shut downs. Then I put in my Install Disc 1 and did a Hardware Test where they found the error: 4SNS/1/40000000:TGOD. After that, I restarted my computer and now everything is fine... or so it seems for the moment.
I'm just wondering, since that was the first time it happened, should I take it to the Apple store to get it checked soon, or wait? Or should I do another Hardware Test? I've checked online on that specific error and that apparently it's a temperature/fan problem with the motherboard. Any suggestions on what to do now? Thanks!Take it in and get it looked at if you are getting that error. They may have to replace that logic board.

Kernel Panic - is it hardware?
This is second one this week. First one was related to Aperture, which was updated today, so hopfully we are good there. This one, however, seem to relate to storage.
Your thoughts?

Post-Kernel Panic: Various questions on iTunes, mail, stability, help!
I recently experienced a Kernel Panic on my Macbook Pro from late 2010 (2.53 ghz, 4 gb ram, 500 gb OS X snow leopard etc).
First, a quick overview of the Kernel Panic process:
I had a lot of stuff running simultaneously, and the system started hanging for several minutes. I then made a manual shutdown by pressing the power button, and when I started it up again, I entered the wonderful realm of Kernel Panic.
Extended hardware test found nothing wrong.
Disk Utility told me there were a corrupt sibling file, as well as about three corrupt record files (I think they were called that - it looked pretty generic, but unfortunately I didn't write anything down).
I couldn't start in safe mode, a PRAM boot didn't do anything, nothing worked. I couldn't reinstall OS X, as I got a message saying there couldn't be written to my harddisk.
I didn't have any Time Machine backup, so a very friendly collague of mine took my MPB apart, and in short transferred the contents of my harddisk onto an external harddisk. I then formatted my harddrive, reinstalled OS X, and am now in the process of putting everything back in place, as well as I can. But I have a bunch of questions and observations I'm a little worried about, and I very much hope someone can help me.
It must be mentioned that I haven't taken the MBP online again yet; I am currently still at work and am not able to get my Mac online on the work network (it's locked). Therefore there are some OS X updates I haven't reinstalled yet.
- I have managed to rebuild all my subfolders in the default Mail program; however, my Inbox is nowhere to be found on the external harddrive, and I can't seem to find the location of my new inbox anywhere. Is it eternally lost, or can I restore it? My extemely important mails are saved (software licenses etc), but there were quite a few mails in my inbox that are important as well and i'd like to get them back.
- ITunes seem to have some issues with handling the import of my entire music/podcast archive (about 120 GB). If I select more than approx. 15 gb to import, it starts hanging, and I have to force quit it and retry with a smaller chunk. Is this normal, or should I be worried?
Note: I did notice that a couple of the folders in the salvaged iTunes archive were completely empty - there's only a picture of a blank piece of paper next to it, instead of a folder icon, and the size is 0 kb. I can just re-rip the music to my library, but I am a little suspicious of this.
- More iTunes. One of the times I force-quit it and then tried to reopen it, I got an error message saying that I couldn't open the iTunes application, because the files were locked, or the archives were locked, or something along those lines. I got quite a scare, but after restarting the mac, iTunes opened as it should. Again, should I be worried? Is this normal?
- I am considering getting a new harddisk for the MBP, a Seagate Momentus XT 500 gb, as I am a little wary of the default harddisk after this. I figure that since I haven't put anything back in place yet, it would be the same if I had to format and reinstall OS X once more. The damage has already been done, so to speak. Would this be a good idea, or is it unneccessary? (I have ordered a RAM upgrade, so i'll be running with 8gb instead of the default 4).
- Why did this Kernel Panic happen? I know I made a force shutdown, but why did it go so wrong? I would like to know what caused it, so I can prevent it. Couldn't it handle the extensive simultaneous processes I was putting it through (my gargantuan iTunes library was running, I was watching a video, had many tabs open in Chrome, it was hot etc)? Will the planned RAM upgrade fix the issue? Is there something fishy about my harddrive?
I hope someone will take the time to answer my many questions, and I am very grateful for any help. The most important thing for you to learn from the experience is that you'll inevitably lose all your data if you don't make backups. Regard that as a certainty, not a risk. Do no more work with the computer until you have a backup solution in place.
The second point is that your hard drive has failed and you shouldn't continue to use it. Shut down the computer now and don't start it again until the drive has been replaced.
For future reference, familiarize yourself with FireWire target mode:
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
This mode can be used to access the internal storage device of a Mac without booting it.
Some of your files have apparently been lost or corrupted. If you don't have backups, they're almost certainly gone forever. It's possible to attempt data recovery on a failed drive, but the more you use it, the less the chance of success. I have no experience in this area.
As for why the kernel panic happened, that's impossible to say without a panic log, but it was most likely caused by the drive failure. -
Hi, just now my computer just popped out an error message saying that "You need to restart your computer". I was able to power the iMac back (and i'm typing from my iMac). I did some research about it and it has something to do with the kernel panic..either hardware or software. Since i was able to power back my iMac, i supposed it was software-related problem? Here's the log from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/
I'm sorry it was quite long and i have no idea how to attach the text file which i have saved. What could be the problem here? And any suggestions to avoid this from happening again? My heart skipped a beat just now.. Hopefully it was no something serious such as hardware problems..
thank you!

Kernel panic after replacing hard drive in Powerbook 17"
I need help with a kernel panic that won't even let me start up. Here's a detailed account of what happened:
The hard drive in my Powerbook 17" recently failed. Since it is out of warranty anyway, I decided to try to replace it myself. I found a good tutorial with photos online and was careful to rehook everything appropriately. After the replacement, I immediately installed OS 10.2 from my Apple Software Restore CD. It seemed to successfully install on the new HD.
After installing OS X, I restarted. I got the Apple logo on the grey screen but as soon as the "gear" started spinning, I got a kernel panic. I tried resetting the PRAM and the PMU but still got the panic message so I fired up Apple Hardware Test CD. Without even running the test, it gave me the message that errors were detected with my RAM upon startup. In the Hardware Profile tab, under Memory Overview, it showed:
768/1024
SODIMM0/J20STANDARD512/512
SODIMM1/J23REVERSED256/516
The last line "SODIMM1..." was red. It appeared that one of the sticks of RAM was damaged. However, when I swapped the sticks, I still got the kernel panic, but the Hardware Profile no longer listed either of the sticks in red and the full 1024/1024 MB was shown.
Does anyone have any idea why I am still getting a panic message? Could I have damaged the RAM itself or the RAM slot? (I was very careful when pulling it out.) Any help would be much appreciated. This has been a great computer for about 6 years and I hope to get another few out of it!
PeterFor anyone interested: I experimented with this a little more last night. By switching the RAM sticks, the memory problem seems to be resolved. I was still getting the kernel panic though so I put the original hard drive (which is on the verge of crashing) back in the machine and everything booted up just fine. It seems like the problem may actually be with the new hard drive. I don't need to do anything to the drive other than pop it in the machine, right?

Dear All,
I purchased my Macbook Air in the US in August 2011. Now it is only less than two years. Starting from two weeks ago, my Mac air starts to have the four language restart box very often. I took it to the Apple Genuis Bar and got my whole system clean reinstalled. Update all the software. But the problem happened again, and the four lanague restart box changes to a five lanague restrat box.
I did not install windows in my mac.
The first time that the panic happened when I waked my Mac up from sleeping. Later, the panic happens randomly, sometimes when I use Word, sometimes when I use safari. After I retalled the whole system, the panic happened twice when I tried to install new software, such as Itune.
I would be very grateful if anybody can give me an idea how to resolve the problem.

At the end of the restorement, the 5-lanague restart box appeared again. The technician told me that probably the hardware was broken down. He has seen six max air recently with kernel panics because of hardware problems.
I bought my mac air in the US in August 2011. Use it very carefully. Terribly, less than 2 years, it broke down. -
Kernel Panics - Applecare refusing repairs
I ordered a 15" Core2Duo Macbook Pro as soon as they were announced and from the first day I have been experiencing about 3 or 4 kernel panics (gray screen, "shutdown required" message) per day, at random times, regardless of what applications I am running, or how long the system has been up.
First I ran the Apple Hardware test off the install CD and it showed countless errors of the form:
4MEM/1/40000000:4b352
4MEM/4/40000000:09752dac
4MEM/4/40000000:06752dac
I sent it in to Apple for repairs, but it came back a few days later with a note saying that they couldn't find any problems, so they didn't do anything. I used the computer for a few days and had the same problems, repeated kernel panics, but this time when running the Apple Hardware test it returned no errors. I also tried running Rember to test the RAM, which turned up even more errors than the original Apple hardware test. When I called for a second repair job and explained this to them, they said they don't care what Rember says because it's not an Apple product. They say they still can't find any problems, and they are now preparing to return my laptop to me with the issue unresolved.
I have tried all the remedies I could find -
I have erased and installed OSX 5 or 6 times now.
I have tried using only the pre-installed software and not installing anything that didn't come on the boot CD.
I tried resetting the PRAM and a system reset (removing the battery and AC and holding the power button).
I have tried turning off my Airport card.
I have tried testing each of my two RAM chips individually, but can't isolate which one is defective because sometimes the hardware test displays an error, and sometimes it doesn't.
The same problems continue: frequent kernel panics, but the hardware test only detects a problem about half of the time.
This is a complete nightmare. I have been a satisfied Apple customer for years now, but I was so disappointed to have my brand new system fraught with problems right out of the box, and even further frustrated at the poor level of support I have been receiving. Are there any other options left open to me at this point? Thank you for reading.
Macbook Pro 15" 2.33MHz Core2Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8) 2GB RAMI agree with Adam in trying new memory modules.
Also, you need to call Customer Relations if you're not happy. The are the ones to resolve any issues you have--not support.

High CPU temps after kernel panic.
Recently I've seen my Mac Pro 8-core CPU temps rise pretty considerably, between 10°-15°C after a bone head move on my part.
After setting up a new Vista x64 virtual machine in VMWare Fusion 2, I was trying to get a Linksys USB to Ethernet adapter (USB200M) to work inside this virtual machine, but with little success. After tracking down a driver online which I thought at the time was a match for the chip on the adapter, I tried to load the driver manually in the virtual machine. This unfortunately resulted in an immediate OS X kernel panic; my first and only on this machine.
Since then, my CPU temps have been on the rise. Not sure if its even possible for a kernel panic to damage hardware, but I’m wondering if any low-level software damage resulting from the kernel panic could be causing the higher temps?
I tried a simple restart which did nothing. I have since run the extended Apple Diagnostics and everything appeared OK. Also, ran a “fsck” check and everything appeared OK there as well.
Any feedback, suggestions or advice?
P.S. This is an Early ’08 2.8GHz 8-core Mac Pro with 10GB third-party RAM. RAM has been thoroughly tested and running in the machine for over a year now without incident.
ThanksNo, ethernet ports work fine.
I use the adapter to connect a VMWare Virtual Machine directly to a VPN Netgear router which runs a remote VoIP service, available on Windows only. To make a long story short, I ran into all kinds of performance issues when connecting the Mac via Ethernet directly to this crappy little Netgear VPN router.
So, the alternative was to use the USB to Ethernet adapter to connect only the VM directly to this router. Definitely not ideal, but worked fine with XP.
It was when I upgraded the VM to Vista x64 and tried to install the driver for the adapter that I got the kernel panic and now higher CPU temps.
Still just curious if I could have damaged any hardware? -
My SSD failed and I was instructed to reformat my hard drive and restore my files. I erase my hard drive using Disk Utility and reinstalled Lion from a flash drive. While Lion is installing, I get a kernel panic. That's happened now four times in a row and I'm befuddled because I don't have anything on my computer to conflict right? Please help.

Do you think it's ram related?
No way to tell unless you test it. Like I said kernel panics are usually hardware related. Since your Macbook Pro is from the "2009" era, run the Hardware Test disc which you should already have - Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test
Apple Store diagnostic testings are FREE. It's the repairs you are responsible for if out of warranty. -
Can't install mac os x on macbook pro because of kernel panic: IO-APIC
Hello guys,
i have a macbook pro, that i formated with a windows 7 dvd, now i ONLY have a windows 7 on my macbook pro.(I wanted a clean install with os x before i puted windows 7, but i coudnt because each time i tried to boot from os x dvd i got a kernel panic, thats why i formated the entire hard driver and puted windows 7)
But now i realy want the mac os x, i really tried evrything, evry dvd, evry key combination nothing worked.the error i get is: yo need to restart your computer ....
I alo cant acces the hardware test....
nobody could help me on the forums...
Today i tried to boot from a linux bootcd, then i got the next error:
mp-bios bug:8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
kernel panic: not syncing: IO-APIC +timer doesnt work.
As you can see the problem is apic, when i press noapic the linux starts up, so i think if I could disable the apic before starting to boot from the os x dvd should help...
on windows computers yo can disable the apic in bios, does anybody have an idea how i can do it on a macbook pro?
or maybe other ideas that can repair the bug?You are working ages on a mac os and dont know how to fix a problem like this...
It's far from a common problem. I've never seen anyone post an IO-APIC issue before. Doing a search for your exact error message turns up all kinds of links for people trying to install Linux, Ubuntu, or some other non Windows OS on their PC. This thread is the only one I found related to a Mac.
Just a note on this:
i can get a mac os x snow leopard on a windows PC
You do realize that's illegal, right? The user license clearly states that the Mac OS is to be installed on Mac hardware only. Not to mention that even if you do somehow manage to get OS X installed on PC hardware, it's almost a 100% certainty it will run badly.
and tried to press option, c,d while booting(the dvd os x was in there)
Just pressing? Try again, insert the OS X install disk and restart. When you hear the startup chime, immediately press and hold the C key until it is clear you've started up to the DVD. If this doesn't work, then that kind of brings this up:
oh one more thing: i was also getting the kernel panic before formatting the previous mac os x
Kernel panics are usually hardware related. What do you have plugged into the laptop? If anything, unplug them before attempting to boot to the OS X install disk. If there's nothing plugged into any of the USB, Ethernet or FireWire ports, the it's most likely bad RAM. You'll have to bring the Mac in for service to get that checked out under warranty. -
Recieving "Kernel Panic" notification and I don't have my OS CD anymore
I am recieving a Kernel Panic notification Error Code: 0x00000010 every time I start the computer - I read that reinstalling the os would fix the issue, however I got my MacBook in '08 and have since lost the operating system. Any ideas?
Kernel panics are usually hardware related so I don't know where you read that reinstalling the OS is a definite fix. Bad ram is a typical issue. Read: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
If you lost your OS installer DVD then get a new one. Contact AppleCare and request a new DVD. You need that for repairing the hard drive and reinstalling your OS. Keep it in a safe place next time.
