Kernel Panic Subsequent to Mac OS X Snow Leopard Update

I can no longer start my Mac Mini since an automatic update of Mac OS X 10.6 today, Sunday, March 27th 2011. I have tried restarting 3 times and cannot through a kernel panic. What's up?

I have no idea what you are talking about here. I have never heard of such a thing as hardware being obsoleted by an upgrade.
I have heard of hardware failing and that causing kernel panics but never heard of anything like you are suggesting.
It sounds like you need more tin foil in your protective hat there.

  • Kernel Panics : Office for Mac or Safari ?

    Hi everyone,
Happy New Year 2015 for a start !
I have been experiencing Kernel panics with my mac book pro mid 2010radomly for a few months now but I am not very good in reading the reports provided once the mac reboots. I observed that Powerpoint and Safari are usually the softwares I am using when experiencing the crash.
Last time, maybe it was because of Word office 2011.
I migrated to Yosemite 2 months ago (version 10.10.1) and I guess my office for mac is updated : Version 14.4.7. Same thing for Safari (version 8.0.2).
Here is the report below : Anyone would understand my problem ?
Thanks in advance to the community.
    Greuz.

Unfortunately, I did not manage to contact them. They more orientated me to do usual tests by myself.
I have a question for the community, knowing that I have a strong feeling that my problem is due to Powerpoint.
What do you guys think about uninstall/reinstall Office for Mac 2011 on my macbook pro now that I updated to Yosemite ?
I would follow this modus operandi : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768
Thank you guys for your answers.

  • Can the new Mac Mini boot Snow Leopard from an external hard drive?

I currently boot my 2009 Mac Mini from a FW800 external drive with 10.6.8. If I just plug my external drive into a new 2011 Mac Mini, will it boot into Snow Leopard if I set it as the startup disk or will I get a kernel panic?

I bought a 2011 Mac Mini, which came with Lion installed. I thought maybe I could repartition it and have a Snow Leopard partition. So I repartitioned it (500gb split into two 250gb partitions). I named the new partition "SnowLeopard" just to make it easy for me to tell the difference.
I attached the external DVD and put in a Snow Leopard installer disc, holding down the C key so it would boot and install from that, but it just spun for awhile. Doesn't appear to work.
Then I read somewhere else that someone had managed to clone a copy of Snow Leopard onto an external drive and boot from that. In their situation they were talking about a MacBook, but the principle seemed sane.
So I rebooted, holding down the T key to put the Mac Mini into Target hard disk mode, and attached it via Firewire to another MacMini (circa 2008 or so, not sure of year, but it was upgraded last year to Snow Leopard and has been upgraded along and along). Then I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Snow Leopard (that is, the entire hard disk-- System and all applications and data) to my newer Mac Mini's "snow leopard" partition.
For yucks, when it was done cloning, I restarted the older Mac Mini, and had it boot from the newer Mac Mini's snow leopard partition--- it worked! To make it easy to tell the difference, I changed the desktop background to something completely different. I think I tried booting from Lion but I can't remember if that worked.
Then I rebooted the newer Mac Mini, which booted up in Lion, of course. Going into System Settings, I changed the startup disk to the "snow leopard" partition, and rebooted, and it booted up in Snow Leopard.
I have yet to test the applications on the Snow Leopard partition. Another problem has arisen.
Because with both of the Mac MInis being active on the network, they both had the same computer and user name. So I renamed the newer Mac Mini to something completely different, and changed the password.
Unfortunately, now I cannot change any other setting in the System Settings that requires a password. While the newer Snow Leopard lets me log in with the new user and new password, whenever I try to click the "lock" icon to change something, I'm prompted for a username and password. Apparently this is some different username and password than either the new or old username/password.
I've tried various combinations of both: new user/old password, old user/new password, old user/old password, etc.
So if you do what I've done, be careful about changing the username and password on your cloned computer. I think it may be wiser to create a new user and then delete the old cloned users. I may just have to re-clone the old Mac Mini to the new one again.
If anyone has any ideas about this password conundrum, please pass along!

  • Kernel panic on first boot after 10.6.8 update

    Hi,
    Here are the fact:
    1) I systematically get a kernel panic on first boot after an attempt to update to 10.6.8 (was able to revert to 10.6.7 using Time Machine; now I'm running my tests on a clone). While doing the update, there are NO USB connexion to my laptop, nor ethernet connexion. Only the power cable.
    2) I DO NOT use the software Hands Off which is known to cause such an issue
    3) I've tested this on two different hard drive (with a clone of my system)
    4) I disabled all third app on startup just to be sure this wasn't a conflict problem
    5) After a kernel panic, I'm always able to boot in safe mode
    6) I did try both the normal update and the combo update (same result)
Now I'm kinda stuck. The next test I'm thinking performing is to update while in safe mode. But I don't know if it will help.
And yes, my permissions are all fine. Any idea how to troubleshoot this? I believe I need to be in 10.6.8 in order to update to Lion?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Parneix

    Hi,
Sorry about that. Below you'll find the log of my latest kernel panic.
I did follow instructions suggested by user "ds store". The only "kext" file that I've got (by running the commands in the Terminal) was related to the software LittleSnitch. I downloaded it again in order to run the uninstaller. I'll try again to update to 10.6.8 under those conditions and report here.

  • Running PPC applications on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I just tried running a PPC file on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, but it obviously didn't work.
I am just receiving this error message:
"-bash: ./Unreal Tournament OS X: cannot execute binary file"
That's what file says: "Unreal Tournament OS X: header for PowerPC PEF executable"
In either way I would have excepted Rosetta to step in... what could be wrong?
    Best regards,
    Mihai

    Works for me.
    % scp mypowerpcmac:/bin/ls .
    % ./ls -l ./ls
    -r-xr-xr-x 1 me me 32460 Feb 3 15:44 ./ls
    % file ./ls
    ./ls: Mach-O executable ppc
    % uname -v
    Darwin Kernel Version 10.2.0: Tue Nov 3 23:08:29 PST 2009; root:xnu-1486.2.11~3/RELEASE_I386
Did you install Rosetta? It is an optional install in Snow Leopard.

  • Text messages in Safari are garbled on Mac Pro after Snow Leopard install

When reading or composing my Yahoo mail text messages in Safari on my Mac Pro after Snow Leopard, the wording is very garbled. Looks like o's, s's, c's, some caps, with lots of spaces intermixed. Messages look ok on Firefox, on same machine. New messages and reading sent messages look ok on my MacBook and MB Air. When cutting and pasting into something else (like this window), the text looks fine. I can compose and send messages that look garbled, but the right words and letters go out. HTML messages look ok. Any clues for solution?

I have this happening in bunch of different HTML pages. Here's a screenshot of the same page in Safari (Version 4.0.3 (6531.9)) and Mac OS X 1.6.1 side by side with Camino:
    https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/362958/miscwebimages/Screen%20shot%202009-09-22%20at%2018.35.47.png
Camino renders the page correctly. Safari is really unusable with this problem. Tried switching to and from 64-bit mode in Safari, didn't help either.

  • How do I install my old my 2010 Mac book pro/ Snow Leopard 10.6.3 program on a power Mac G5 Desktop

How do I install my old my 2010 Mac book pro/ Snow Leopard 10.6.3 program on a power Mac G5 Desktop

A PowerPC G4 or G5 can't be upgraded past 10.5.8. If you're trying to install an application and not a newer Mac OS X version, check its system requirements and use the original disk or download.

  • I have Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8; I am trying to install Mac OS X Lion

I have Mac OS X Snow Leopard professional 10.6.8 update
I am trying to install Mac OS X Lion.
I get an error message: other users are logged on.
I have three accounts: William G Cullen; Guest; williamgcullen.
I have tried to delete williamgcullen, but it asks for a password; I have tried every password I know and can't open it. I also did not set up this account.
how do I solve this problem?

Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups. If the lower left, there is a lock icon. Click on it and type in your password to make changes.
Then, select the account you want to remove and press the - symbol.

  • Is MAC OS X v10.6.8 same as MAC OS X Snow Leopard. Since i want to download MAC OS X LION can it be downloaded on my mac which has MAC OS X v10.6.8 ??

Is MAC OS X v10.6.8 same as MAC OS X Snow Leopard. Since i want to download MAC OS X LION can it be downloaded on my mac which has MAC OS X v10.6.8 ??

Yes, assuming you can run Lion, & can deal with no more Save or Save As... functions...
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, (I say 4GB)
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, (I say 40GB at least)
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • I am unable to sync my iPhone4 iCal to my Mac iCal. Snow Leopard does not support the Cloud. What do I do?

I am unable to sync my iPhone4S iCal to my Mac iCal. Snow Leopard is my OS and it does not support the cloud. What do I do?

To makeuse of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mountain Lion, provided it meets the requirements.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
The requirements for Mountain Lion are listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • Can I run Adobe CS, CS3, CS4, and CS5 software on Apple Mac upgrade forom Snow Leopard to Maveric OS X ?

I would like to know if I can run my older Abobe CS, CS3, 4, 5 on an upgrade from Mac OS X Snow Leopard  to OS X Mavericks ?

Might work; might not.  Legacy apps (CS2, 3, 4) that weren't built to run on modern operating systems may have trouble with Mavericks.   I think you'll be OK with CS5, 6 and CC.

  • Mac mini and Snow leopard wireless problems

    Hi,
I got mac mini running snow leopard to our office from another branch, this is recently brought mac mini with snow leopard installed,

Thanks DaddyPaycheck for your initial response. Before I jump onto the phone with Comcast couple of questions that I have for clarification purposes:
    1) Are you implying that I must link my blabla.com address to that static IP address through my Domain Provider? See following example:
Record Type Record Host Record Answer TTL
    A *.blablat.com >>Static IP<< 300
    2) The current IP I have been given 60.172.151.254, why is that not static or how do you know it is not static?
    3) When executing the command host in terminal for this IP address it returns the following: c-60-172-151-254.hsdl.co.comcast.net which coincidentally is the same as primary DNS it recommended during the initial configuration of the Mini Server. What does this mean? When I enter this in Safari it results in 'Safari can't connect to server'.
    4) Executing the same command for my domain name 'blabla.com' it results in my 'internal' IP address '1.0.10.9'.
Thanks in advance for any clarification you can provide,
    Tiest.
