Kernel Panic That Just Started - HELP?

So this kernel panic has happened twice now, once about two weeks ago, and once just a few minutes ago.  Wouldn't really bother me but it happened during an online test and now I'm screwed   It basically just crashes my computer to black screen and have to hard reboot to get it to work.
Here is the log:

  • I'm getting a kernel panic that I can't figure out

I have a power mac g4 1.25 with 1.5 ram. I'm getting a kernel panic that I can't figure out. I have changed the graphic card, ram, logic board, keyboard and mouse. It happens right when it starts and sometimes 5 minutes after I log in. I erased and reinstalled the operating system, and threw away the bootx file which I read could work, that didn't work. I have and older power mac g4 which has the same kind of hard drive, so I swapped them and the hard drive in the kernel panic computer work fine in the older Mac. I have tried to start up on the disc that came with the computer to do a hardware test but it wont last long enough to run the test. I have even started up in target disk mode and got a kernel panic. Also fixed disk permissions and verified the disk still no good. Did I miss something? I think it is the Processors but I would like to know for sure.
    Please Help
    Thank You

Kernal panics are usually caused by a hardware problem - frequently RAM or USB devices. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?

  • Kernel panic, can't start with install disc or safe mode

Two days ago my 2008 Mac Pro got a green screen that froze up the entire system. After a few minutes I decided to force power down by holding the power button. Since then I receive a kernel panic every time I boot up in Mac OS.
I run bootcamp and I'm able to boot up Vista 32 bit okay. After the system went down my video card, NVidia 8800GT, was no longer being loaded in Windows due to and error (43). I tried installing old drivers, new drivers, and today I finally bought a new video card, NVidia GTX 285 Mac. The new card works great in Windows, but I'm still unable to load up Mac OS.
I've tried resetting the PRAM. I've also tried booting up off of the 10.5 install disc to try a fresh install, but I get kernel panics even when I do that. I connected the Mac to another Mac using target disc mode and using Verify Disk it detected no errors. I used the Apple Hardware Test and again the Mac detected no problems. I've reseated the RAM in the cpu and disconnected all usb and firewire devices. I've called Apple support and they told me to do all of these things I just mentioned. After all of that I even tried erasing the Mac HD partion of the hard drive thinking that it might erase a problematic file or at least let me do an install on a fresh drive (thankfully I made an exteral backup of all my Mac files when I had it in target disk mode). I'm at a loss of what else to try other than taking it into a mechanic. Has anyone experienced this before or have any ideas?

Your OS X system sounds hosed. However, getting a kernel panic trying to start from an installer disc is usually a good sign of hardware failure. If you aren't using the original installer disc that came with the computer, then that could be a problem - wrong version for the machine. Or the installer disc itself is defective.
If your Boot Camp partition is on a different drive, then I'd suspect the hard drive but you believe it's OK. This could be a problem with RAM. However, I would look for another suitable installer disc you can try that boots the same version of OS X that was installed originally on your machine.

  • Help -- Recurring Kernel panic at cold start-up

    imac g5 -- 1.8 ghz ppc -- 1 gb ddr sdram -- os x 10.4.11
The last two days my iMac has been having kernel panics at login after a cold start up -- off more than an hour or so. I've repaired the disk permissions, and disconnected peripherals, but it still happens, and the cold startup leads me to believe it's hardware... maybe ram or something? What do you think? Should I just keep it on 24/7? Is it possible the ram needs to be replaced and if so, how much would that cost?

  • Kernel Panic that I can't get past, plus unable to start up in safemode

Hi there. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.
I was using my computer yesterday and after dinner when I turned it on I had the transparent drapes lowering over my monitor. A kernel panic with a "You need to restart your computer" in four languages. I restarted and I get the same message. So I am sort of stuck. I can't run in safe mode. I tried and I got stuck at the apple screen with the turning gear for about half an hour.
I can use the comp as a firewire target drive. And I have run disk utilities which found a number of permissions errors that were corrected but the hard disk appears fine, and I have run the other extended hardware check - I think its what comes up when you hold down D and restart and not errors were detected.
I googled the panic log - and someone had the exact same log I think and his problem was solved by a an archive and install. The only difference is he could run in safe mode. So will this work for me? I am at work now, but have a freelance projects due in two days and need to get this machine running tonight.
    Here's the log:

The panic seems associated with the boot cache. This could simply be a cache corruption problem. If you can boot into safe mode, then download a utility such as TinkerTool System - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - and use it to clear all system, user, and font caches. Reboot immediately and see if this resolves your problem. If not, then you can do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Kernel Panic - can't start in Safe Mode or from OS Install disc

    Can anyone help me ?,
    Here's what happens :
    1. I press the power button to switch on
    2. The usual grey screen with the apple logo appears but after a few seconds it is replaced by a darker grey/black screen with a message in the centre saying something like 'you need to restart your computer, press restart or press and hold the power button for a few seconds' in several languages(I believe that this is indicates a Kernel Panic)
    3. Powering down as per the instruction just results in the same message appearing when I switch on again......
I've looked at numerous suggested solutions, here and elsewhere - the problem is that they all start with either:
...start your machine in Safe Mode...
    Or
...start your machine from the OS disc...
and I have been unable to do either (the same panic screen just reappears each time)
I've also tried starting in Single User Mode and typing mount uw / (step 1 of another suggested solution) - again it simply hangs after returning a few lines of text...
I have a G4 iMac with superdrive and have recently installed OSX 10.4
Any suggestions you can offer would be gratefully received!

    Hello going:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
One suggestion - if you have third party memory installed, remove it and see if the problem goes away. If it does not and you cannot start from the software install DVD, you will need to take your computer to either an Apple store or to an Apple certified repair facility for diagnosis. Kernel panics may be caused by either hardware or software, but if you cannot start from your install DVD, no further "repair" operations would be possible.

  • Major Problem with kernel panic on new iMac: HELP!

My housemates 24" core 2 duo imac kernel panicked when playing Call of duty 2 (side question: if anyone has any reason why it keeps freezing and the screen getting full of horizontal lines would love to hear from you)
Now I can not start the computer. Whenever I restart, it plays the chime, but then has another kernel panic. Spoke to apple.. i reset the pram.. and then it came back.. ive zero data deleted my hardrive then re-installed osx.. and it is still doing it!! (i ran hardware tests and said everything was working fine..)
The graphics card is nvidia 7600GT
Also.. When starting up the imac, just after the apple logo white screen turns to the desktop, the screen flashes a lime green for a split second.. i know that shouldnt happen!
It wont let me send a report to apple wen i get a window saying "imac shut down unexpectantly".. when the button clicks.. no report comes up.
The operating is a 24" 2.16 Ghz iMac intel 2 core duo, 1GB RAM!
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers.

I had the same problems. New iMac 24" arrived last week (a replacement because the first one had a faulty screen and keyboard). Set it up at the weekend and it seemed fine for 48 hours until I started watching a DVD on Christmas Day. About 2 minutes into the DVD I got a kernel panic, then the computer would not restart. I left it about an hour and tried again. It started successfully, but had another kernel panic when I opened the Dashboard. Again, it failed to restart. I think that something is overheating whenever the computer tries to do any 'work' and then it crashes. I too got panics when trying to boot from the installation disc. Spoke to customer support over the phone and nothing we tried worked, so I've had to send back for another replacement system.

  • Kernel Panic in Japan - Please Help!

    Hi all,
I just recently moved to Japan and my wife and I just bought iPhones 2 days ago. Before the Kernel message came, I was getting messages on the computer that read that 'sync' something was having trouble and did I want to report the problem?... etc. I assumed that it had something to do with mobile me which we just started working with a few days ago. So I wondered if I needed to update the software. I started to do so and it asked me to restart. After I restart it tells me that it needs a start up disk or something like that... what I usually do at this point is restart the computer and hold down the option key, which is what I did... then something new happened. This popped up:

So here I am. 5 days old in Japan (I'll be here for 3 years). I'm hoping that I'll get some info here on how to fix it myself. Otherwise I have to take it into the Tokyo store which is very very far away.
    Thanks for looking,
    Chris

    HI Chris,
Kernel panics are sometimes causes by hardware issues. Probably a good idea at this point to check the boot disk for errors.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
    Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk.
Checking a hard disk to see if it’s going to fail
You can check the health of your hard disk by checking its Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) status in Disk Utility. Most disk drives include S.M.A.R.T. hardware. Developed by IBM, S.M.A.R.T. hardware allows hard disks to test themselves for potential problems.
Starting up in “safe mode” may help you to diagnose problems you’re having with your computer.
To start up in safe mode:
Shut down your computer and wait 10 seconds.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.
You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after your hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart the computer normally without holding down any keys during startup.

  • Envy 110 D411a causes kernel panic that crashes MacBook Pro

I posted this 10 months ago, with no response.
My Model D411a Envy 110 (PN: CQ809A   SN: CN264C228R05QR) is on an AT&T gateway/router.  We have a 13" MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.5, a 13" MacBook Air running 10.8.5 and an iPad also on the same network.
Often, when I try to print a page from the internet from the MB Pro to the Envy 110, it causes a kernel panic on the Mac that crashes it, requiring a lengthy re-boot.  The display shows a big black box with the message that I have to re-start the Mac, starting with a complete re-boot - printed in several languages.  This does not always happen, but often enough to be a major problem.  It has not happened with the MB Air or iPad.
I have an identical printer in Florida that has not had this problem, as far as I can recall.  The gateway/router there is from Century Link.
An Apple "Genius Bar" guy suggested this is caused by HP using kernel extensions in its software, which no other printer manufacturers use.  I now own six HP printers.  I have had some problems keeping three of them going with the AT&T set-up and the same computers, plus a pre-Intel Mac Mini.  The oldest of the printers is an HP LaserJet 4ML, which is so old it has a long white beard — but still runs.  I hate just to abandon HP Printers, and the Envy is the best physical fit both here and in our Florida RV, but having it crash my laptop (most used) as much as half the time I try to print from the net makes it a problem rather than a solution.
I can't even find a reference to "kernel" much less "kernel panic" in any of the forums here, which adds to the feeling that no one knows what I'm even talking about.
If anyone out there has any advice to offer, I'd really appreciate it before I have to toss the printer and find one from another manufacturer.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dante

    Hi Dante,
From the post i understand that you are having issue with the MacBook Pro(Lion) with Envy 110.
Can you help me understand what all other printers have been installed on the same MacBook
We can try to uninstall the printer using scrubber/Reset the printing system and reinstall the printer with the software available on Web. (ENVY-110-series_v12.14.0.dmg).
Note: Performing this step will delete all the printer from the MacBook, and should be reinstalled.
    Use Scrubber Uninstallation:
Go to Applications>Hewlett-Packard , Press and Hold the "CTRL", "ALT","CMD" simultaneously click on Uninstall.
    Reset Printing System:
1.Open Print and Scan from System Preferences
2.CTRL Click or Right Click on the Printer box on the Left side and Choose " Reset Printing System"
    3. Click OK
    Do Repair Disk Permission
    1. Open Applicaion Folder>>Utilities>>Disk Utility.
    2. Sele t the hard drive containing the boot volume.
    3. Go to First Aid Tab and select Reprir Disk Permission.
Download and run the driver from web and add the printer to queue.
    See if it helps.
    Thanks

  • Kernel Panic When Printing -- Please Help

I used to have the Kernel Panic problem all the time because I stupidly did not keep my computer on a hard surface. Once I started leaving it directly on my desk, the kernel panic subsided.
Now it's back. Every time I try to print something, a few pages print, followed by Kernel Panic (my screen darkens with symbol of the power button and error message tells me to restart my computer). I have 23.1 GB left on my hard drive (out of 120). I don't think this is the problem but I figured I'd mention it anyways.
Last time this happened, I had all other applications closed. The only thing open was the printing que and kernel panic still happened.
Please, please help me. I just started school and I really need to be able to print things and not have my computer shut off every time. Thanks so much!
My printer is an HP Photosmart C6380 all-in-one.

Thank you so much for your help! I appreciate it more than you know! Here's actually my most recent three kernel panic attacks (with the most recent at the very bottom). If you could diagnose what's going on with my computer, that would be so amazing! Any advice you have... my apple care recently expired so I am feeling a little hopeless :(!
    Thank you!!!

  • Kernel Panic right after start up on my PowerBook G4

I get the standard kernel panic message quite frequently after I start up my PowerBook. I have used the Disk Utility (software), and the Hardware Utility to check the system hardware, and both say all is well.
I would appreciate any ideas on how to fix this.
    Thanks,
    Shawn

Well, the "erase and install" feature should do the trick. That does essentially what I was thinking by having you format the drive. No other tricks needed, just update as soon as you're done using the latest combo updater available for your OS version via the software update option in the apple menu.
    Happy installing!

I've no idea what the problem is: Previously, I was experiencing crashes when the following 2 entries featured in the crash report:
    (a) com.rogueamoeba.hermes
    (b) com.Cycling74.driver Soundflower
They were linked to (a) AudioHijack program, and (b) Max 5 (an Ableton live-related program) - so I deleted all the files I could find for each of them, but the report generated still included the above antries - then I re-installed OSX using the install disc that came with my Macbook Pro.
The entries seem to have disappeared, but I'm still getting crashes, especially when I try to open Time Machine.  It's driving me mad and I've got work to be getting on with AAARRGH!
If anyone can please help/throw some light on this, it'd be most appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    TD.

By the way, I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2010) -
Just installed updates to version 10.6.7 .  There is also a WD Passport 500GB ext. hard drive attached (used as time machine), and recently added a WD MyBook 2TB ext. hard drive for storage - both via a Laser 7-port USB hub.  Not sure if either of these would come into the equation when considering the frequent crashes, but I thought it might be useful information for those in the know...

Hey KingPro, I feel ya man. I've been getting the same issue and am also going nuts. There's not much help around about this one. I also posted here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2766689?threadID=2766689&tstart=0 but I think the OP managed to get a replacement. How I wonder.
I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz i5, and I sent it in to the Apple store twice on a clean install, and after extended diagnostics, they reported nothing wrong and refused to help any further. They guy I spoke to said that if it's a software issue, then it's the user's responsibility and how they use their mac. I told him that when someone buys a computer, they are expected to be able to use it without any hitches, but apparently he can't cover for anything not Apple endorsed. So Apple doesn't cover common sense. They guy went on to suggest that some websites for example, might be the cause.
I really am lost now, I just want the crashing to stop.
Here are some of my Kernel Panics, the most recent one being the whole log:

  • Kernel panic log - can anyone help me decipher?

I posted this in the Leopard discussion group, but didn't get much response. Can anyone here help me figure out what is causing kernel panics on my iMac G5? Here is the log for the latest one (they all seem to be the same):

This is what I've tried so far:
Ran hardware test: no problems reported
Ran memory test using Rember: 10 loops, no problems reported
Repaired disk permissions: two were repaired
I just replaced my hard drive and installed Leopard. The hard drive seems to be functioning perfectly, so I'm suspecting it's related to Leopard. I never had a kernel panic until the upgrade. I'm considering going back to Tiger. Thoughts?
Thanks for any help with this.

I upgraded 3 days ago to leopard and have had 5 or six kernel panics. I had the machine running panther for years and never had one before. All similar to what has been described in this thread. I have not been able to get through a time machine back-up all the way yet. I am afraid to leave the machine with time machine active now because the panic mode I get into usually puts the fan on full blast- Can't be good to run for hours like that. I am backing up a lot of files so I wonder if the size of the initial backup is causing the problem. I have gotten through about 150 GB worth with time machine before the crashes set in. If I make any progress I'll post.

  • Kernel Panic - Genius couldn't help....

I'm having these a few times a week.  I can be in Safari, itunes, iphoto... anywhere.  Is there someone out there who can help me with this one.  The genius at the store ran hardware tests for a few days and says all it well, despite the chain of kernel panics.  If you can decode this a bit and lead me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.  Here are the last two panics.

Theyre both on your system, so you must have put them there. I'm getting quite a few hits relating to kernel panics for com.TrustedData.driver. I'm not really sure what that program might be about, but here's one
    http://www.tdsllc.com/Company
Then, for the attotech.driver I'm finding
    https://www.attotech.com/products/
They don't seem graphics related, but the first step would be to unload (disable) those two kexts and see if the KPs stop, using these instructions:
For any of the possible culprit kernel extensions, it is not necessary to completely uninstall the parent program.
You can temporarily uninstall any .kext, which may be causing the problem, by doing the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste
    sudo kextunload
Important, leave a space after kextunload
Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.
This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.
This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.
    Good article on KP troubleshooting
    http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/qt/Troubleshooting-Os-X-Kernel-Panics.htm
You can also unload that LaunchDaemon using the launchctl command. Drag in the file the same way as above.
sudo launchctl unload -w (space) <path to file>
to reverse substitute load for unload

I doubt it's software. You can do an Archive and Install of the system software:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1710
If you have a good backup, you can even do an Erase and Install and start from scratch. That would test the "it's software" theory.
