Kernel Panic (unknown cause)

Hi all.
Since I installed SL, I have been receiving Kernel Panics every couple of days. I am not sure what causes them. Two thinks I did notice, though: There are issues with the USB drivers for my Microsoft USB keyboard (they work with 32bit apps only). Could this driver be a problem? The other thing is that it seems that always when the panic occurs I was running Eclipse.
Here's the full dump:

HI,
Go here for help to Resolve Kernel Panics
The Microsoft keyboard could very well be the culprit.

I save my Diagnostic Reports. Based on what I read and what people copy/paste on their discussions, the only thing relevent is the cause of the problem.

Solution: it was my gmail account on Mail that was causing the multiple reboots I had

I have run the hardware check and no problem found.
Should I just bring my computer to the genius bar? Might it be related to the SSD? Might it be related to Mavericks?
    Anyway it is very annoying.
    Thanks for your help,

    Hi There,
I have a MacBookPro late 2012 equipped with 16GB of RAM and a Samsung SSD 840 EVO. I installed the SSD a early March and made an OS fresh install.
I have no third party drivers installed.

I save my Diagnostic Reports. Based on what I read and what people copy/paste on their discussions, the only thing relevent is the cause of the problem.
3/22: Kernel Panic with reboot and grey screen, 3 times the same day
... BSD process name corresponding to current thread: AddressBookSourc...
3/23: Kernel Panic with reboot and grey screen, 3 times the same day
... BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Mail ...
3/24: Kernel Panic with reboot and grey screen, 3 times the same day
... BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Mail ...
Solution: it was my gmail account on Mail that was causing the multiple reboots I had
3/28: Kernel Panic with reboot and grey screen
... BSD process name corresponding to current thread: mds_stores...
4/4: Kernel Panic with reboot and grey screen
... BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task...
A common diagnostic between these reboots is that it happens after my computer wakes up from a nap.
Is there anyone with similar problems?
    Here is my last report

  • Kernel Panic probably caused by Video Card: solutions?

    Hi,
    I have a G4 iBook, 12", 1.2 GB Ram, 1.2 Ghz, should be "Late 2004" Model.
This morning, while I was surfing, suddenly OS X crashed, just freezing everything on my screen (not the multi-language kernel panic screen), still on and working but no movement on the screen. Surprised, I hold down the power button and then again to start it again. Read the kernel panic (KP) log, send it to Apple and just after few minutes it does the same. The KP log is always the same, I use it for about a minute, then it happens again. Another reboot and then the iBook stops just before the login window. So, if I switch it on, it chimes, usual grey Apple logo, then the screen becomes blue as it always used to do before showing the login window but the it stops there.
If I boot with command-S, I obtain a working root command line, didn't check if it hangs in this way. If I boot in Safe Mode, it works, but it hangs there as well after few minutes. As you see in the KP Log, the cause is probably the ATI Graphic Card (even cnsidering that screen just freezes, as if the graphic card doesn't send nothing new to the screen), but I have no idea how I could solve this issue.
    KP Log is the following:
    Mon Apr 26 11:36:01 2010

    Any ideas? Any help?

I believe you're right; your graphics card has some trouble. The iBooks are notorious for such things, unfortunately. I believe the heat of the machine causes the connections to loosen.
If you're in the US, you can send the logic board to Super Reball and have them fix up the connections; I believe the cost is around $75, if you remove the board yourself.

  • How to find the Kernel panic's cause?

I have a HP G7 server, OS is RHEL 6.0, and it often kernel panic.
Who can tell me how to find the cause?
I even try use kdump service to collect the cause, but you know, the kdump(kexec) have a bug, so collect fail.

    Hi LsmithIIIkw,
This aritlce has some tips that should help you identify and resolve the issue.
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac restarts and a message appears
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14063
If your Mac restarts unexpectedly, an error known as a “kernel panic” occurred. After the restart, you’ll see a message that your computer restarted because of a problem.
The most likely cause is faulty software. A kernel panic can also be caused by damaged or incompatible hardware, including external devices attached to your Mac.
Note: To print these instructions, open the Help Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear), then choose Print.
If the kernel panic is caused by a known problem, the faulty software is identified. To make sure that this software doesn’t continue to cause kernel panics, move it to the Trash. If the faulty software is not identified and your Mac continues to experience kernel panics, follow the troubleshooting steps below.
Restart the Mac in safe mode. If the Mac successfully starts up in safe mode, choose Apple menu > Software Update, then download and install any updates available for your Mac.Start up in safe mode
Uninstall any plug-ins or other enhancement software from manufacturers other than Apple. If you recently updated OS X or an app, plug-ins and other software that worked in the past may no longer be compatible. Read the manufacturer’s documentation (including Read Me notes) to be sure the software is compatible with your version of OS X.
Reset parameter random-access memory (PRAM).Reset your computer’s PRAMApple Support article: Mac OS X: What’s stored in PRAM?
Use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk or your disk permissions, or both.
Disconnect all USB and FireWire devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. Remove hardware upgrades from other manufacturers, such as random–access memory (RAM) and Peripheral Component Interconnect cards. Then try restarting your Mac.If this resolves the issue, reconnect one device at a time, restarting your Mac after reconnecting each one, until you determine which device is causing the problem.
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These apps can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test
If the steps above don’t help, try reinstalling OS X.Reinstall OS XNote: If you moved or renamed an OS X system file or folder, you must reinstall OS X. It won’t work to just replace or rename the specific item.

  • Kernel Panic caused by intel driver?

    Hey guys,
since upgrading to the kernel 3.6.* series I experience a lot of horrible instabilities on my ThinkPad X220 (Sandy Bridge) that I wanted to complain about:
    1. When I boot the system I randomly get a Kernel Panic presumably caused by an intel driver. I cannot reproduce it, but it seems to be related to some wireless driver issue. I'm relatively sure about this, because it won't ever happen if I switched off wireless.
    2. Wicd stopped detecting my wlan0 device as wireless. The reason is,  that it simply looks for /sys/class/net/wlan0/wireless to exist, which is only visible with the kernel option WIRELESS_EXT_SYSFS switched on.
    zcat /proc/config.gz | grep WIRELESS_EXT
doesn't show it up and looking up some kernel config brings me to the conclusion that it has been removed due to deprecation and the wicd developers didn't come up with a solution, although this problem is known for three years
    3. I also suffer from high power consumption after wakeup.
It seems that the wireless driver is somehow broken as well as wicd is not well maintained. As you can see in the picture, not the whole trace is printed. Here is some more data about my system:
    Kernel:
    Linux birdeye 3.6.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 31 20:57:39 CET 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    Wireless
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (rev 34)
    Anyone experiencing the same issues?
    EDIT: fixed image URL

    @fixje,
I noticed the same thing on my X230. At first I suspected it to be caused by power saving tools, iwl power management and pcie_aspm. So I disabled them all. It still happens and quite randomly. Sometimes it crashes the driver only and not the kernel itself. Reloading the driver doesn't work and only way out is a hard reboot. One thing that is common across all crashes is that it leaves "acpi_idle" and "intel_idle" errors in the back trace like yours and it happens mostly while running on battery!
Happens for me on 3.5 as well as 3.6. I experimented with BIOS' power options specifically Adaptive Thermal Management by turning it to maximum and disable PCI Express Power Management features. But it still continues to show the signs I reported in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=137881
    I also tried compat-wireless drivers.
If anything changes, I'll let you know.

  • IMac 27" with Wireless G network causes Kernel Panics

    I bought a 27" iMac Jan 8th 2010
    At home i'm running a Wireless G network through a linksys WRT54G V7.0 router
From day one i was running into Kermnel Panics several times a day
When i was provided a new machine the same thing happened
The machine has been away for repair for 2 weeks and nothing was found.
As soon as the machine was back home the Kernel Panics started again
A clean install has ben done, and when setting up the network for the build in airport, the machine died again in a kernel panic
After further discussions with apple repair they stated the the Kernel Panics were caused by the Wireless G network, and was advised to get myself a wireless N router
I got myself a wirelees N router (apple airport extreme), and no more Kernel Panics were seen
    Now the questions are :
Did anybody else ran into this issue ?
Is somebody have this same issue and also have a linksys router ?
Would anybody be able to explain why my Linksys WRT54g V7.0 router running Wireless G cuase the Kernel Panics on my machine ?
Ok quite a story, but hope to get some constructive answers.
    thnx
    Paul

I took home a 27" i5 iMac on 7th of Mar 2010 and immediately two days later i had my first kernel panic.
When i called Apple Support the next day i was led through a barrage of file deleting and the usual Disk Utilities Repair Disk actions. Two days later another kernel panic happened but this time the computer display remained blank. I brought it back to the department store where i purchased it and, they agreed to replace my unit (still within the store's seven days warranty).
Five days later my new unit arrives and the moment i turned on the wireless connectivity i had another kernel panic. I was ****** - NOT looking forward to carrying the 38lb computer back to the store again. Called Apple again and the guy had me reinstall OSX. One day later kernel panics still there.
Then i experimented by not turning on the wireless internet, for two days no kernel panics. The moment i did, a kernel panic would occurs, i got suspicious. That's when i stumbled on luupski's post (I'm real glad i found it). I also was using a linksys WRT54G router and getting the same kernel panics as everyone on this thread. Now that the root cause has been identified, i decided to save my SGD258 (apple airport express) and instead invested SGD18 in a Cat5e 20m ethernet cable. My mac now works perfectly apart from the lack of wireless network, which i can grudgingly bear.
Real glad to see genuine and useful posts in a forum like this. I will be giving a heads up to the Apple support guys, they seem to be totally oblivious about this issue. Its weird since the WRT54G seems to be quite popular here in Singapore.
    Thanks,
    simon

  • System.log file are large, and cause a kernel panic when deleting

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to solve a dillema.  I discovered that over 60GB of my 120GB SSD drive are taken up by system.log files.  All 3 are around 20GB.  I left my laptop running so none of them are the current one.  They are system.log.0, system.log.3 and system.log.4.  I have tried several ways to delete them:
    Using Disksweeper
At a terminal prompt using sudo rm
At a terminal prompt using sudo su - (to get root access) and then rm -f ....
Rebooting the system in single user mode, mounting the drive and then attempting to delete them
Each time I do, the system reboots with a kernel panic.  I have not looked at the panic log yet, but can post that if you need to.
I did look at the end of the current log file to discover there were some issues with programs, and I have fixed it so that these size log files "shouldn't" be generated anymore.
Looking for advice as to how to delete these files!  This is driving me nuts.  It shouldn't be this hard.
Thanks for any help or insight you can give.

OK, I actually was able to solve this myself.  My problem was that ther kernel panic was caused by the journaling.  So here is what I had to do:
I temporarily disabled journaling, see here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=373067
Then I was able to delete the files by starting a terminal session and using sudo rm to delete the files.
Re-enabled journaling (I don't know if it is needed, but it was on before).
Hope this can help someone else in the future.

  • TS4636 Can Sophos Anti-Virus cause a "kernel panic"?

    Hello everyone,
The other day my MacBook Pro Retina restarted out of nowhere after it was not really reacting to anything anymore. I read on support section of apple that this may have been caused by a "kernel panic" and that most of the time a "kernel panic" appears after installing new software. The "kernel panic" appeared after I just installed Sophos Anti-Virus for my MacBook. So is it possible that by installing Sophos Anti-Virus this "kernel panic" was caused??

This can happen. Sophos has/had a bug that caused these kinds of problems in Mavericks. I know that they were working on fixing it, but I honestly have lost track at this point and don't know whether it has been fixed yet. I can say, though, that this seems to be fairly rare, as I've heard very few reports of such an issue. It may only affect certain hardware, or may only be triggered by the presence of some other software. I don't know.
In any case, if this problem is affecting you, it's probably wise to uninstall Sophos. However, you need to be cautious about installing other anti-virus software, as most is less well-behaved than Sophos. You may very well be able to do without entirely.
See my Mac Malware Guide for more information.

  • Kernel panic in 10.8.2 solved (for me)

Thanks to the Apple Support crew who spent hours on the phone with me figuring this out. S, you are great!
    Background:
I have seven machines from Apple.  These range from Macbook Air to iMac to numerous others, all Intel-based.  Over a period of a month I began upgrading from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2, one machine at a time, and with days betweeen working on the next machine.  Each time I upgraded a machine I began experiencing kernel panics upon startup on the upgraded machine.  These kernel panics began the same day I did the upgrade, and often I'd have three kernel panics back-to-back before I was ever able to log in.
Apparent Cause of the kernel Panics:
I use the word "apparent" as not to lay blame.  Nevertheless, the common denominator on all the panic machines was the remote login software called LogMeIn (as far as I can tell).
    How to Stop the Panics:
I suggest doing this only if you can do without using logmein.  If you can't, you might want to move or rename files rather than delete them, or beat on the logmein support staff to hurry up and fix this apparent conflict.
LogMeIn has files and daemon processes all over the place.  Open a terminal window and change directory to /Library/Application Support/LogMeIn
The % sign is the command prompt in the following examples.  Don't type the % sign in your command.
"cd" is the command for changing directories, "ls" is the command for listing directory contents, and "pwd" is the command for identifying where you are in the file structure.
    cd like this:
    % cd /Library/Application\ Support/LogMeIn
Note the "\" backslash character above.  That lets terminal know you are entering a space between the words Application and Support.
You may have to do additional hunting, but find a file in the LogMeIn directory (or possibly a slightly differently named LogMeIn directory) called uninstall.sh  The file uninstall.sh is the LogMeIn uninstaller, and it will be in one of the logmein directories.
Run the LogMeIn uninstaller from inside the directory where it is located:
    %./uninstall.sh
The uninstaller doesn't seem to do much uninstalling, but it does stop a few daemon processes from being cranked up.  You've now killed most of the logmein daemon processes but not all of them.  You will also still have the round logmein icon up top on your command bar and the LogMeInGui application showing up in the startup list rolling through your console.
Go back to the finder, and look in Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plugins.  Find the logmein directory and delete it.
At this point, the kernel panics will stop, but you'll still have a few logmein daemons running and the icon will still be on your command bar up top.
Either spotlight "logmein" or search a few library directories for logmein subdirectories.  Delete them all.
    Search these:
MacintoshHD/Library/Application Support/ ... any logmein stuff in here
    MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchAgents/
    MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchDaemons/
Under your username you need to look in the Library directory.  If you haven't already created an alias for it so you can see it all the time, press the option key while you are in finder and already looking at the "Go" menu from up top.
In username/Library, look in these directories: (and do it for each username on you machine to be safe)
    /username/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    /username/Library/LaunchAgents/
To round out the extermination, you might want to do one final spotlight for anything logmein-related, and delete it.
For the record, I used logmein daily to connect to my office and to help administer remote machines.  I'll gladly return to using the software once this weird system killer has been fixed.  Other than the kernel panics it caused with 10.8.2, I found logmein to be some of the most user-friendly remote access software around. I was never fully comfortable with all the daemon processes, and as for security, it always gave me the creeps, but those are my own personal disorders....
I haven't had a kernel panic since, and I also no longer spend every waking hour of my time at home logged into my office machine.  Double whammy.

Nice work, thanks for the report, hopefully it'll help someone else!

  • Leopard Disk made my Mac Pro Kernel Panic

I have used original OSX 10.5 Leopard Disk to repair my mac pro HD, but it made my Mac Pro Kernel Panic. It was strange that the Mac Pro install disk one can success enter install mode!
Although I have conducted RESET PRAM procedure, the Leopard disk still made the mac Kernel Panic.

I would like to ask if you upgraded your graphics card and if so, that it might require a later OS version than the DVD.
Two, I never use the DVD to repair permissions (Apple warns users to not use the DVD to do so now with Leopard); or to repair disk drives.
You are better off setting up a bootable hard drive for emergencies; a bootable clone of your working system; and, TimeMachine, so you have more than just one backup set or method.
Kernel panics are caused by hardware otherwise, most often due to 3rd party devices and even cables, including Firewire or USB.

  • Kernel panic after installing Yosemite (when connected to power source)

My Macbook Pro is crashing regularly since I installed Yosemite a couple of weeks back. This only happens when the laptop is connected to a power source and not in use. I get the following Kernel Panic message. Would really appreciate some help since this is beyond my pay grade

    Hey there Ketan,
In order to help you troubleshoot the cause of this Kernel Panic, I would recommend you use the troubleshooting in the following article:
OS X Yosemite: If your Mac restarts and a message appears
If your Mac restarts unexpectedly, an error known as a kernel panic occurred. After the restart, you’ll see a message that your computer restarted because of a problem.
The most likely cause is faulty software. A kernel panic can also be caused by damaged or incompatible hardware, including external devices attached to your Mac.
Important:    To print these instructions, click the Share button  in the Help window, then choose Print.
If the kernel panic is caused by a known problem, the faulty software is identified. To make sure that this software doesn’t continue to cause kernel panics, move it to the Trash.
If the faulty software is not identified and your Mac continues to experience kernel panics, try the following:
Restart your Mac in safe mode. If it successfully starts up in safe mode, choose Apple menu > App Store, click Updates, then install any available updates.
Disconnect all USB and FireWire devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. Remove hardware upgrades from other manufacturers, such as random–access memory (RAM) and Peripheral Component Interconnect cards. Then try restarting your Mac.
If this resolves the issue, reconnect one device at a time, restarting your Mac after reconnecting each one, until you determine which device is causing the problem.
    Reset parameter random-access memory (PRAM).
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These apps can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.
If the steps above don’t help, try reinstalling OS X.
Note:    If you moved or renamed an OS X system file or folder, you must reinstall OS X. It won’t work to just replace or rename the specific item.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Kernel Panic - mac crash

    Hi,
my MBP crashed 3 times this week. First I didn't read the problem details. The other/last two which happened last night an this morning mentioned Kernel panic. (Copied all the details down in case that's of any help?)
I read the following in an old thread:
+Kernel panics are caused by two things: faulty hardware (usually memory) and buggy kernel code (usually third-party kernel extensions.) The relevant part of the panic log is the backtrace, which in your case shows that the panic occured in the graphics drivers. The VMWare extensions are the only third-party kernel code you're running.+
+There are two things you can do. First, run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the Mac. If that's positive, you have a hardware issue. If it's negative, uninstall VMWare and see whether you can reproduce the crash.+
Unfortunately I am abroad for the coming months (in Egypt, where there's no apple store!), and do not have my CDs or any other extra things with me to run that Apple Hardware Test...
I am a computer illiterate, so do not quite understand what has gone wrong. Have not really downloaded anything big, but very often use a lot of basic programmes at once and have my computer on for long periods at a time. (I know, not perfect conditions). My computer has also been running pretty slow every now and then and froze a few times, but that improved. More concerned about the panic crashes.
If you have any other suggestions, that would be amazing! Thank you!

Many KP's are caused by RAM problems including incorrect RAM, defective RAM or RAM that is unseated. You can easily trouble shoot these issues by being a little methodical. If your KP problem doesn't appear to be RAM related then I'd suggest studying these article to help you locate where the problem is.

  • MacbookPro/Lion 10.7.5 - Kernel panic after idle time - Can log file help in narrowing the problem

MacbookPro Lion 10.7.5 - My macbook pro panics when i hit any key after an idle time.
I have disabled Sleep, I am usually connected to an external monitor and external keyboard.
I have already tried (Cmd+Option+R+P) and re-installing OS in safe mode with Apple Support, but, the problem persists.

Uninstall the software associated with this according to the developer's instructions. Often, kernel panics are caused by third party kernel extensions which are either deprecated or incompatible. Note that you should also have pairs of RAM modules installed, IE either (2x2GB or 2x4GB for your model). Non-pairs can make OSX unstable.
