Kernel Panic when booting from OS X install CD

Hello,
I have a PowerMac G4 Mirrored Door that used to run 10.4.8 and was acting wonky. I repaired permissions and did the hardware test to no avail so I decided to clear the drive and reinstall the OS.
I reinstalled 10.2.1 with the original CD's and that went smoothly. I then attempted to update to 10.4.8 with the OS 10.4 install CD's that we had purchased. And when the computer tries to boot from the CD I get a Kernel Panic once the apple appears on the grey screen but before the status bar starts turning.
I reset the PRAM and updated to 10.2.8 but still got the panic when I tried again.
Here is the begining of the panic code:
panic cpu 0 caller 0x002E54BC: Unable to find driver for this platform: "PoerMac3,6"
The CD's I used say "For Mac Computers".
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Nick

Unfortunatlly I was not here when the computer was upgraded last (I freelance at a studio with many computers that need constant attention). I was told that these were the CD's that were purchased for the upgrade and I've looked in vain for others.
They are 2 gray Apple CD's. The first install CD says "For Mac Computers" above Mac OS X install Disc 1. They each came in a sleeve with a sticker that says "Common Media Multillingaul"
These are the wrong CD's, aren't they? The correct ones have been lost, haven't they?
I was really hoping that wasn't the case.

  • Kernel panic when booting from DVD or external drive

    Hey Folks,
I have a 13" MBP, seems to run fine for the most part.
However, I can't boot from DVDs or external hard drives. Disk Warrior, my and a tech support buddy of mine's OSX Snow Leopard DVDs, and external boot disks all cause a kernel panic when selected from the alternate boot menu when rebooting with alt.
The DVD/External spins up, the loading spinner goes for about 20-30 seconds, and then BAM - Kernel panic. I'd reinstall OSX... but I can't!
Any suggestions? I'd rather not send the computer to a tech for a week - I need it daily for work.

  • G5 Grey screen (Kernel Panic) when booting from CD

I know there are a lot of posts with people experiencing issues with the grey screen during boot. Most resolutions point to hardware but all state, including Apple's walk through, to boot from CD and run a validation on the hard drive.
My issue is completely different. I get the grey screen of death when booting from a CD/DVD only. I can boot into the OS just fine from the hard drive. But if I try to install another OS, or just boot from the CD/DVD, I get the grey screen.
    What I've done to troubleshoot:
    Reduced RAM to original sticks
    Removed hard drive
    Replaced DVD drive
Tried multiple versions of OS discs (10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and 10.4 server)
Reset the PRAM (Both via keyboard and Open Firmware)
    Replaced the video card
    Replaced the logic board
    Replaced the Processor
Quite litterally the only thing original in this system is the power supply and the memory. However, I only get it when I'm booting from CD so the memory should not be the issue. I've even used a seperate power supply for the DVD drive to see if it was causing an issue.
Any suggestions? I'm looking at possibly replacing the power supply but I'm afraid it's going to give me the same issue.

Thats the thing, I've tried 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, and 10.4 server. (CD and DVD) All give me the grey screen. Well 10.2 and 10.3 give me a dark grey square in the middle where the apple should be but then the fans ramp up like it does when you get the grey screen of death.
I've also used two different drives.
It reads the disks fine with no issues. If I boot to the hard drive I can use the system like nothing is wrong. But if I want to boot from CD for any reason I cannot.
If I follow the logic it seems it is something to do with the CD/DVD drive. This is because it works fine when booted to hard drive. If it was the memory or PSU then I'd be getting the problem all of the time and not just when booting from CD/DVD.

  • Kernel Panic when booting from Install Disk

My problem started when I was scanning my hard drive for problems with the Disk Utility.
It notified me that I do have some issues that could be resolved by restarting my computer with the Snow Leopard Installation Disk and running the DIsk Utility from there.
I tried to do that and it starts to boot up from the DVD but after about 30 seconds I get the Kernel Panic messege (You Need To Restart Your Computer...) in various languages and I have to restart again.
I also have the installation USB that comes with the MacBook Air and I get the same messege so I know it's not a problem with the installation disk itself.
Does anyone know what to do? I can't find a solution anywhere online.
    Thank.
    P.S
I have a Macbook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM.

    Mr.V5 wrote:
I have disconnected all peripherals and I did a Safe Boot and I still get the Kernel Panic message.
I'm using the original Apple supplied RAM and I haven't added anything to the hardware since I bought it 8 months ago.
Eight months ago means you bought it used, yes?
The next step is to reseat the RAM, meaning remove it and put it back in.
If that doesn't work, then remove one module, try booting, move that module to the other slot, try booting, repeat with other module.
If neither RAM module works in either slot, then there are almost certainly other hardware issues (usually the logic board, which covers a plethora of possibilities; unfortunately, the fix for almost any LB issue is to replace the entire LB), as the odds of both RAM modules and/or both slots being faulty are extremely low (but possible).

  • Kernel panic when booting from Tiger install DVD

Short version: When I try to boot up from the Tiger installation DVD, my Power Mac G5 gives me a kernel panic. Can anyone help?
    Here's the story:
I have a Power Mac G5 that I've been running Leopard on for quite some time now. Unfortunately, the software I need to use (Final Cut Studio 1) has some incompatibilities with Leopard, so I was thinking I would put Tiger back on the machine in a separate partition on the second hard drive.
I tried booting the Power Mac using the retail (black label) Tiger DVD and holding down the "C" key. The Apple logo appears on screen, but is immediately followed by a kernel panic. I'm never able to access the features on the disc. The same thing happens if I try holding down "option" during boot instead: I'm correctly allowed to choose whether to boot from the hard drive or the DVD, but once I choose the DVD, I get the Apple logo and then a kernel panic.
The same Tiger DVD works fine on other computers, so I know it's not the disc. And the Power Mac itself handles everything else without problem.
I'm kind of desperate, as I need to finish this project this week. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!

    It is Geode LX. Thanks

  • Kernel panic when booting from CD

    Hi all,
I've just tried to boot from a CD on my relatively new (4 months old) - i think this is the first time i have needed to boot off a CD.
My Panther CD boots as far as the apple logo, then it looks like a few pixels in the centre of the screen get jumbled around - and the computer does not load any further.
If I boot off a DiskWarrior CD (latest version 3.03) I get a black Darwin screen with lots of text and a Kernel Panic "we are hanging here" error, as well as a small box saying that I need to hold down the power button.
My hard disk boots OK - but I am wanting to boot from CD to repair a couple of disk errors that the drive has.
    Any ideas? Faulty CD drive?
    Kim

If you system is only 4 months old you very likely need a version of the OS on CD that is newer than what you are using. I had a problem with my 1.5GHz PB 17" a while back (just before Tiger came out) and I tried to boot it from a Panther 10.3.0 retail CD and it started okay then bombed - and I thought it was the somethign serious - turns out that I should have used the CD that came with it originally which had verison 10.3.3 or so - then everything was okay.

  • Kernel Panic When Booting with Install DVD

I get a kernel panic when booting from the OSX 4 (tiger) install DVD. I am using a Quad G-5 with 8 gigs of ram.

Have to ask what version your Quad came with, whether same DVD you are using now. Apple now has Tiger DVDs w/ 10.4.6 for sale.
When booting, or when you get to the screen to select Languages on the initial screen (before you can select DU or Installer etc)?
How about Option booting to Apple Hardware Test and running extended test?
Did you run memtest or anything when you installed RAM (assuming you didn't buy it BTO w/ 8GB).
Any time adding or changing hardware, including memory, it is either a good policy or essential in some cases to boot into Open Firmware (command option of) on startup and type "reset-nvram" and 'reset-all" after installing. Same for PCIe or even swapping out disk drive (where sometimes a drive won't show up or allow you to partition).

    Hi,
I have an Imac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo desktop which I have upgraded to lion.

Hi, for other peoples information - I finally figured out the problem. It was actually a faulty RAM module which I had bought. I had upgraded from 2 to 4 gb of RAM using an approved type of RAM for my particular computer. Finally I removed one module of RAM (after doing nearly everything else under the sun including trying to reinstall the operating system and wipe the computer etc) and the computer worked fine.

  • Kernel panic when waking from sleep

My eMac (1Ghz, 256 Mb RAM, dual boot OS 9.2.2/OS X 10.2.8(upgraded from 10.2.4)) has a recurring but intermittent issue where it suffers from a kernel panic when waking from sleep.
In the past I managed to fix the issue by resetting PRAM and NVRAM, but this doesn't seem to work anymore.
Things I've found out until now:
    - Apple Hardware Test and Techtool Deluxe can't find anything wrong (all tests are passed).
    - No kernel panic log is written - apparently the kernel panic occurs before the log can be written.
    - Crash appears to be network-related. My IP address and network card address are shown at the bottom of the panic window.
    - After restarting, Finder windows revert to a state from two or three days ago...
    - Login items aren't the problem. I removed them all - this doesn't make any difference.
    - no weird things in the startup items folders, AFAIK.
I'm on the verge of reinstalling OS X, but I think I already did this a couple of years ago, and it didn't help.
    Please help.
    Thomas

Nominally, you'd download the OS X Update Combo 10.2.8 after reinstalling 10.2.4, then use Software Update to identify any additional security and other software updates. There was an issue with early builds of 10.2 failing the 10.2.8 udate if done directly, but working fine if one first updated to an intermediate version such as 10.2.6; I think that problem affected 10.2 through 10.2.3 and your 10.2.4 should be good to go directly to 10.2.8, but if there are any problems, you can go back to 10.2.4, then search the Apple Downloads link for 10.2.6, then 10.2.8
With 10.2.x, it's prudent to run Repair Permissions after each OS and security update before moving on to the next.

  • Kernel Panic when Updating from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 Server Software

I tried updating our G5 Xserve with the 10.4.7 DVD. Since I have only a CD drive in the Xserve, I used a Mac Mini in target mode with the Server Install DVD in the MacMini DVD drive. Upon restart at the beginning of the install process, I get a Kernal panic.
I have a Village Tronic MPDDpro graphics card with latest drivers. 1 GB of memory. (I also tried using an external DVD firewire drive, but get the same kernel panic when Xserve tries to boot from the OS X Server DVD)
I was unable to get the xrdiags to provide any output. Tried unsuccessfully to get a Mac Mini running OS X Server to Netboot properly, so tried with xrdiags on a CD. Again no output back to the terminal administering the xrdiags start.
I tried putting the Xserve in target mode and installing the 10.4.7 from the Mac Mini. Install process went through successfully, but when I rebooted the Xserve, and before getting to the Setup Assistant, I got the Kernel Panic again.
Needing then to re-install 10.3, I reinstalled the 10.3 Server with the original disks and updated to 10.3.9 and reinstalled all the application software and setup users etc, (days of work) all went well with 10.3.9 Server.
I need to get up to 10.4.7 soon!
Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks for helping. I'm green at this! Getting definite experience as you can see, but can you help me with an actual real live make and model of a graphics card that is known to work on the G5 Xserve?
I called ATI re: their Radeon 9200, and was told by tech support that they do not support this card on the G5 Xserve. Yet, Scott Maiden, in his post above, referenced an ATI Radeon card.
What cards are being successfully used? Can I have a list?
Apple Tech Support will not give any such list. Maybe they know of some problem with all? (When I bought the Xserve in September of 2004, Apple Tech Support recommended the VillageTronic card.) The new, yet un-released Quad-core 64-bit Intel Xeon Xserve has "built-in graphics functionality, with mini-DVI output and support for industry-standard VGA displays," according to Apple's web site. Hopefully this will eliminate this type of problem in future releases of Xserve. But for the nasty here and now...
All I need is an inexpensive graphics card to administer this Xserve. Currently I am using a 21” SuperMatch SVGA monitor.
Thank to all who have helped.

    jamescalvin-
The only cards I have found to work reliably in the
G5 XServe are the cheap-arse PCI models. I do not use
my XServe for serious graphics work so I do not know
how it works with other cards.
Can you swap in a known compatible PCI card for
    testing purposes?

  • Stop sign during boot, panic when boot from cd

Figured out my monitor problem; it seems to work now; however another problem appeared.
When I try booting up normally, the Apple logo appears for a brief second and then is replaced by a 'stop' sign (circle w/ line across).
I already tried reseting the nv-ram, pram, already tried booting in every single mode possible; tried booting from the 10.4 Tiger install cd - however after about 3 seconds of it reading the disk, I get a "We are hanging here..." panic.
My boot volume is a extended RAID - two 30gb hard drives, plus another 40gb HD by itself. It worked perfectly before. None of the data is backed up; and I really need to recover it asap.

You are getting a kernal panic, which is usually caused by a hardware problem. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?

  • Kernal panic when booting from tiger disk

My friend just called me with a computer issue. She just got a used computer and it had a password setup. i told her how you can boot from the tiger install disk and reset it. She put the disk in and started holding down C before she turned it on. It sits there and thinks for a while and then she gets a kernal panic with the prohibitory sign before it gets anywhere (to the install screen). I have no idea what to tell her and she's 3 hours away so I can't really go over there easily.
Could the fact that she started holding down C before she turned it on make a difference?
    Any help is appreciated.

The correct procedure for booting from the DVD is:
Start the computer and immediately after hearing the chime press and hold down the "C" key with one hand while inserting the DVD into the optical drive quickly with the other. Continue holding the "C" key down until the computer starts up from the DVD.
If the computer is already turned on, then insert the DVD into the optical drive. Restart the computer and immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the computer starts up from the DVD.
If the computer continues to panic despite the above procedure, then there's likely a major hardware problem.

I've been having some trouble with my 2012 MacBook Air. It was running perfectly until about 2 weeks ago. Now, when waking from sleep, I am getting Kernel Panics that force the restart of my Mac. I was wondering if anyone could provide insight on the issue.

The problem stemmed from something related to USB. I suggest uninstalling the third-party software responsible for installing these items:
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp          4.2.6
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt          4.2.6
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB          4.2.6
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv          4.2.6
    com.silex.driver.sxuptp          1.10.1
    com.globaldelight.driver.BoomDevice          1.1
Alternatively you can boot into Safe Mode which will not load those device drivers, and see if you panics cease. If they do, then you can uninstall the software. BTW, the current version of Virtual Box is VirtualBox-4.2.12-84980-OSX.

  • Booting to Kernel Panic cannt boot from a cd/dvd. HELP!

    Hello everyone.
My computer boot to the Kernel error. I can’t boot from the installation CD\DVD or from a firewire HD. but I can boot from a different computer using my laptop HD when pressing T while booting.
I can boot to open firmware, I tried to reset the nvram, it worked once but not anymore.
I went to apple store and they told me that the logic board need to be replaced, I still think it’s a software problem.

    PowerBook G4 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    hi there
ive bought a 17" powerbook 1GIG, 512(UPDATED TO 512 X 2), 60 , SUPERDRIVE model.its a 2003 model but came with no original disks, and installed with OS TIGER.I wanted to install OS classic, so like an idiot - i removed applications from the hard drive and the blue network symbol.the hard drive icon then vanished and i could not open applications. So i re-started the machine, it now comes on with the welcome tune ,then you see the grey apple logo, then from top to bottom a dark grey covers the screen with the instructions in the middle to"restart computer".there is half a screen of programme text and at the top it reads "unable to find driver for this platform"
also it states "panic at the bottom.
Will i be able to sort this problem if i had the original disks so i can reinstall everything.ive tried to install copies of classic and jaguar-no luck.
can you give me directions into ways of re-booting/safe mode/target mode.or is all of this a waiste of time if i don not have the orighinal disks that came with my powerbook.do you know anywhere where i can get a copy from.
do you know of a company that can sell me the original disks or copies. Please help as i desperately need to use my computer been a graphic designer.
    hope you can help.
    thankyou,jason
