Kernel Panic when Mac Pro is jostled

I had a weird occurrence today when vacuuming, I accidentally hit the side of my case and the computer immediately came up with a kernel panic. This is the second time it's done this.
What's really strange is my co-worked had the same thing with his Mac Pro, and in fact he would kick it often enough that he ended up putting it on top of his desk.
I was wondering if anyone else had or heard of this . The Mac Pros were purchased months apart. Otherwise, the problems with these machines has been minimal, but it is annoying when all your work disappears because of a little bump.

Well, it's a different circuit and there's never a problem when the vacuum is on, just when the Mac Pro gets bumped or jostled. It's plugged into a 1500VA UPS. The bump is what does it (or perhaps a static discharge) but considering it does the same thing on both Mac Pros in the office, maybe it's a design flaw.
It's not terribly serious. My computer it's happened maybe three times, max.

  • Kernel panic on mac pro using FCP

I am just starting a new job and have been getting extreme speed issues on my computer followed by this recent kernel panic. I am running 4 2 TB G Speeds through eSATA. My computer went down, when I brought it back up Final Cut Pro took 5-10 minutes just to simply open. I wasn't even attempting to open a certain project. Any ideas based on the attached Kernel report? Thanks in advance.

You have several third-party hardware and software system modifications, any or all of which could be contributing to the problem: the second graphics card; the drivers from Matrox, nVidia (CUDA), Avid, HighPoint, and PACE. You can't expect stability in such a configuration. The only way to troubleshoot the problem is to eliminate all that stuff and add it back piecemeal until you find out what combination of elements is causing the problem. That will be a very difficult task.

  • KERNEL PANICS GALORE-MAC PRO EARLY 08

I bought my Mac Pro 6 weeks ago. For five of those weeks my machine has suffered from multiple kernel panics a day. The first week I had the machine I was not connected to the internet, and did not upgrade leopard or any of the applications installed. And there were no kernel panics. I purchased an ASUS USB wireless adaptor and with a ralink driver I was finally online. I did all of the necessary upgrades to 10.5.2, FCP (5.1.4) and all CS3 updates. It was on this day that my life has been somewhat of a living ****. It's even hard for me to write this without turning it into a novelette.
After numerous calls to Apple, a visit to an authorized service provider I have no answers, only choices, or rather poisons. I ran the Apple Hardware test where nothing turned up. I have completed 2 clean installs of Leopard. I have removed the ASUS USB wireless adaptor and ralink driver. The problem persists. If its not the USBWA, then Bridge crashes, or is the cause of a kernel panic.
I have to say that since my last clean install, I haven't upgraded anything but FCP. I'm running 10.5.1 and CS3 as is. I am beyond myself with this issue. It is slowly destroying my professional reputation.
Can anybody attest to these experiences or have any possible solutions.
    Thank you kindly.

Have you swapped out Apple RAM for something else? that would be my first 'medicine' in your case.
Second would be that you are on a dedicated circuit and behind a 1500VA UPS just to keep gremlins at bay. Or cosmic rays.
2GB is barely enough for anything, let alone the type of work you do. 4-8GB (if you get it stable).
Personally, I wish there was an option and not forced into Leopard until I want to, and it has had more than 6 months even.
Trade it back for a refurbished Mac Pro, they do have 2008 models and I actually trust those more than new.
Guess you only got to the forums when you could get online, but there have been lots of problem threads in the last two months. This is the 'weakest' Mac tower in 20 yrs. I would almost have expected this 2 yrs ago, but the initial Mac Pro was as error and problem free as you could ask for.

  • Kernel panic on mac pro while playing Starcraft 2

    Hello all,
recently I had my second kernel panic since I bought my Mac Pro mid 2010 single core at 2.80 ghz, the computer was bought approximately 4 months ago.
The crash occurred while I was playing the game Stacraft 2 with 3 other friends tonight, while I was playing I had the classic black screen and the writing saying I had to reboot the system. After the crash I ran a complete Apple Hardware test and it didn't detect any problem at all.
On a side note my Mac pro has 3 gb of ram installed at the moment and on the same hard drive I made a bootcamp partition to run Windows 7 on it, tough I have still around 500 gb of space left on the hard drive.
Also I have bought recently a wireless Logitech Mouse which I am not completely sure it's 100% compatible with a Mac.
What do you think guys this could be a hardware issue or just some bad data which was written on the hard drive. To be honest I really don't know what to do since with my previous iMac I never experienced such crashes so I am getting a bit worried....  I read also kernel panics could be a sign the machine is partially broken.
Thank you in advance for all the replies.

Ok I had a look at the log you mentioned. From what I see here it seems an issue concerning the video card   but to be honest I am not really sure about it,
Here is the log anyway if you would like to have a look and sorry for the spam:

  • Kernel Panic on Mac Pro 1,1

Hi all, I've searched these boards for some time now, but don't seem to be finding an answer to my questions...
    *The Unit:*
    +MacPro1,1 - Dual-Core Intel Xeon - 2.66 GHz - 4 GB - ROM-version: MP11.005D.B00 - SMC-version (systeem): 1.7f10 – External Hardware: ACD (USB and FW plugged in) Apple non aluminium USB Keyboard and Wacom A5 Wide pen tablet.+
This particular Mac has been in for repairs on the videocard, a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. The symptoms related to that problem are from a different nature, so I don't think the card has gone bad again.
    *The Problem:*
Having kernel panics regularly for some time now (3 last week). I couldn't determine what it was other than broken RAM (I had 6 slots 2*1GB; 4*512MB of original Apple Ram). I tested this RAM using Rember overnight. When I entered the office, the Mac had the grey curtain all over the screen. So this was replaced last monday with 2*2GB Crucial Apple certified RAM. It ran good for 2 and a half days — just got a new Kernel Panic. So... not the RAM, but then what?
The Kernel Panics had all sorts of BSD processes connected to the problem. The last one (which I unfortunately send to Apple before saving it in a txt file) stated Adobe inDesign as the problem. Other panics pointed at window server, wacom driver and so on, I haven't seen a lot of the same processes passing by, it's a different process most of the time.
These are some other Panics I saved, could you please take a look at it and give me an idea of what the problem might be? My Wacom is running the latest driver btw.

Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.

Thank you for the possible solutions. I run file system check after every crash (this is force of habit from old UNIX world). I am beginning to suspect Maxtor 1 TB Firewire drive or MPICH2.0. Although I checked my MPI based codes. They are not thread based so there should not be any mutex related calls (unless internally it is done by MPI). Usually user codes can't cause Kernel panic unless some system or library call has problems. Anyway .. Thanks for the tips and I will wait for four days to see if I can reproduce crash after detaching TB drive and not running MPI based codes. Lets see.

  • Kernel panics on Mac Pro -

    Hi,
are having serious issues with my Mac Pro.
Kernel panics occur on frequent basis during Final Cut Pro, but also with other processes.
Trying to re-install Mac OSX on a different harddisk doesn't work.
Is there anyone who knows what is happening?
    Thanks?!!
    Frank

  • Kernel Panic when quitting Pro Tools

now i KNOW PT6.9.2 is not yet 100% certified for 10.4.5, but that never stoped that from worked flawlessly. it has worked perfectly for a while now. then, i installed a plug-in called master verb. it made al lthe names of my plug-ins on the mix and edit windows look all scrambly. also, it caused it to kernel panic upon quitting a few times. now, i looked at the installer log, and got rid of every single file it put into my system (which wasnt many at all). so after this, the problem persisted. same scrambly plug-in names and kernel panics. i installed the auto-tune plug-in and, even though its not functional, as long as the window that asks me to buy it comes up and i hit cancel, it makes the plug-in names perfect. only problem is the kernel panics. now is where apple may help. i contacted digidesign several times, but they have horrid tech support. i have been all over their forums, and no one could help.
    i have:
    repaired disk permissions several times
done many clean uninstalls of PT several times and went through the installer log and deleted EVERY single thing
i have done every single their tech support thread said, which included deleting prefrences and whatever
the only thing i have not done is reformat the drive. i have 70 gigs of apps, docs, songs, and sessions on this HD, and it wouldd be such a pain to reformat. i have alot of bvery important things that i dont think i have installers for anymore. i know the kernel panics have nothing to do with the external FW drive, seeing as i ran sessions from my mac's HD, and theres stil lthe panics. it only happens when i quit PT and it only happens about 40% of the time. i have opened and closed the same session 10 times, and 4 times it made me restart. i did the same exact thing each time. so im asking here because i know kernel panics are an OSX thing. Can i trash a certin file or something that OSX will replace or i can put back with the installer dvd? is there ANYTHING i can do? and if i have to reinstall, whats the best way to backup all my aplications and all my files? thanks in advance. sorry for the long story.

    The lines
    Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x400 - Inst access
    and
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xFFFF0004): 0x400 - Inst access
in your panic log indicates an 0x400 (Instruction Access) panic. An 0x400 (Instruction access) panic occurs when the processor cannot access the next instruction to be executed.
Potential causes include RAM problems, hard disk corruption, and programming errors. "Programming errors" in this case can include invalid instructions and violations of protected memory, however it is often difficult to differentiate a programming error from a RAM or hard disk problem since the latter two issues can cause a valid instruction to appear invalid. Likewise, this opens the door to the potential for processor errors, i.e. defective processor or other problems with the logic board.
The Backtrace section of each panic log cites:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.iokit.IOUSBUserClient(2.2.6)@0x344a0000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(2.2.8)@0x2dc23000
    com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(2.2.8)@0x2dc23000
This could imply that a defective or incompatible USB peripheral is involved, which can also mean the associated USB ports or cables.
All I can suggest at this point is that you again go back through the procedures outlined in my "Resolving Kernel Panics FAQ," including the "If all else fails" section.
Frankly, as you noted originally, ProTools 6.9.2 is only officially supported under Mac OS X 10.4, 10.4.1, and 10.4.2, it's difficult to say if either:
    (a) Something is amiss with your system as a whole.
    (b) There is a USB-related issue you need to troubleshoot by process of elimination.
    (c) You've encountered some compatibility issue under 10.4.5 that is causing ProTools to panic on quit.
    (d) The MasterVerb plug-in may have changed something else on the system that was undocumented in the installation log. You might want to check their Web site or contact them to be sure you removed all of the components.
Beyond this and my FAQ, I'm unable to offer further advice based on the evidence you've provided.
    Good luck!

  • Quadro 4000 causing kernel panics, 2010 mac pro

    Had this happen twice now.
Running a quadro 4000 card (brand new).
    it's in sot 16x
    setup is:
    slot 1: 5770 ati
    slot 2: quadro 4000
    slot 3: sonnet 4ep
    slot 4: RED ROCKET
i've had this happen twice now, once I was in resolve and it crashed.. booted back up and the quadro 4000 card wasn't showing up in profiler anymore. took it out, re seated it and then it was fine.
2nd time I was in preview lookign at some pictures and the computer crashed, causing the reboot and again, the card has vanished from profiler.
I'm on a job right now shooting RED so I don't require it but would like to get to the bottom of this, latest CUDA drivers installed. Is there some sort of software I can run to see if the card is kapoot? needs replacing?
    thanks guys.
    running 10.8.2 as well.

  • Kernel Panic Nvidia Quadro Pro 4000 CC14 MAC PRO 10.9.4 mavericks

I get kernels panics constantly when using CC14 lightroom and photoshop.. And this is causing  me to loose thousands of dollars. I have searched for months have lost thousands of dollars in work, have trued to contact support only to be sent to community forums which i get no response...o
    THEREFORE.....
Allow me to waste more time by contacting this unresponsive company.
i  constantly get Kernel Panics when using CC14 associated with my NVIDIA Quadro 4000 2048  while using cc14 photoshop and lightroom since I updated to Maverick 10.9.4.
I have been searching for fixes for months, i have updated everything, every driver,  and this has costed me THOUSANDS of dollars in pay i am unable to receive because my %^&* computer keeps crashing.
Now i am pissed! I have consulted APPLE and  even after pushing me up to the top level.  they still read off a piece of paper. ! i just wanted to go back to osx before mavericks which i was having NO ISSUES but no one seem to have a clue at apple how to even turn one on.
    1. i am NOT doing a master restore and I NEVER had a problem before Mavericks and CC14!!!
    2. Every driver is updated every firmware is updated
    3. there is NOTHING RUNNING IN HTE BACKGROUND
    4. i did an smc and reset pram
    5. ran disk utility -- no problems
    6. searched for answers for months.
    7. and by the way..... photoshop cc14 does not save your work on a crash. it saves what you already saved
I AM TIRED OF WASTING MY TIME TRYING TO GET ANSWERS WHEN I ONLY GET IGNORED.
this is an issue with my nvidia quadro pro 4000 video card and -- adobe and - mavericks.
MY system is high end, mac pro 5,1 Processor  2 x 2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon Late 2010 20 gig ram, quadro pro 4000 and an APPLE SSD TS512B
    solid state
and i spent 10 gran on this system. I am a professional and this is my BUSINESS... my only income.  not a kid playing games.
The video card was over a 1000.00!  Nvidia? ADOBE?
This needs to be fixed. this is my livelihood

Thanks for responding....of course I mean adobe. A community forum is NOT a company.
I read the link to the thread and this person says an application CANNOT cause kernel panics -- well Apple begs to differ. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14063
I have my own photography studio, ive spent over a half million dollars on my education (2 masters degrees) my equipment, and traveling the world to various workshops. I spend some evening researching new technology to stay on top of my craft but what I dont do and dont have time to do is follow forums regularly.
Therefore i dont know that this person has repeatedly said the same thing over and over in different threads about applications causing KP.
You suggested that I take my trouble shooting somewhere else...trust me this is not the first place ive tried to get answer.s I have been trying to resolve this issue since i updated to 10.9.4 and CC 14 and Nvidia Quadro pro 4000. It  has been months of phone calls research, forums, talking to anyone i know that knows anything and  I have lost thousands of dollars.  My digital lab ran perfect before the updates.
    so......
First...I DISAGREE with the guy in the thread because what he wrote is just his opinion. It doesnt matter wjho he works for, it a person converses a fact with NO REFERENCES then it looses credibility.  I always include a reference when I make a statement to anyone
second: as i said in my discussion -- i have done everything and the only time i get kernel panics is when using photoshop - nothing else running in the background, and the issue is with the video card drivers , 10.9.4 and photoshop and lightroom CC14.
lastly; I know my video card is fine because Ive had photoshoots where i tethered (as I alwasy do) to Phocus software for my Hasselblad H4d and there is never a crash or kernel panic issue. ever.
I ONLY GET KERNEL PANICS WHEN I USE ADOBE PHOTOSHOP OR LIGHTROOM  CC14 AND IT HAS ONLY HAPPENED SINCE I UPDATED TO 10.9.4 AND CC14
apple told me to do a restore --  they were just reading  me what they were supposed to say.

  • Kernel Panic when Updating from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 Server Software

I tried updating our G5 Xserve with the 10.4.7 DVD. Since I have only a CD drive in the Xserve, I used a Mac Mini in target mode with the Server Install DVD in the MacMini DVD drive. Upon restart at the beginning of the install process, I get a Kernal panic.
I have a Village Tronic MPDDpro graphics card with latest drivers. 1 GB of memory. (I also tried using an external DVD firewire drive, but get the same kernel panic when Xserve tries to boot from the OS X Server DVD)
I was unable to get the xrdiags to provide any output. Tried unsuccessfully to get a Mac Mini running OS X Server to Netboot properly, so tried with xrdiags on a CD. Again no output back to the terminal administering the xrdiags start.
I tried putting the Xserve in target mode and installing the 10.4.7 from the Mac Mini. Install process went through successfully, but when I rebooted the Xserve, and before getting to the Setup Assistant, I got the Kernel Panic again.
Needing then to re-install 10.3, I reinstalled the 10.3 Server with the original disks and updated to 10.3.9 and reinstalled all the application software and setup users etc, (days of work) all went well with 10.3.9 Server.
I need to get up to 10.4.7 soon!
Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks for helping. I'm green at this! Getting definite experience as you can see, but can you help me with an actual real live make and model of a graphics card that is known to work on the G5 Xserve?
I called ATI re: their Radeon 9200, and was told by tech support that they do not support this card on the G5 Xserve. Yet, Scott Maiden, in his post above, referenced an ATI Radeon card.
What cards are being successfully used? Can I have a list?
Apple Tech Support will not give any such list. Maybe they know of some problem with all? (When I bought the Xserve in September of 2004, Apple Tech Support recommended the VillageTronic card.) The new, yet un-released Quad-core 64-bit Intel Xeon Xserve has "built-in graphics functionality, with mini-DVI output and support for industry-standard VGA displays," according to Apple's web site. Hopefully this will eliminate this type of problem in future releases of Xserve. But for the nasty here and now...
All I need is an inexpensive graphics card to administer this Xserve. Currently I am using a 21” SuperMatch SVGA monitor.
Thank to all who have helped.

    jamescalvin-
The only cards I have found to work reliably in the
G5 XServe are the cheap-arse PCI models. I do not use
my XServe for serious graphics work so I do not know
how it works with other cards.
Can you swap in a known compatible PCI card for
    testing purposes?

  • MBP Kernel Panic when connecting to HDTV (DVI)

I have a 15" MacBook Pro that has been working perfectly since I got it. I tried today to connect it to my Hitachi 51" HDTV (via DVI) and got an instant Kernel Panic. I used my 15" Powerbook with this HDTV without any issues.
I've searched and found folks with kernel panics when waking their MBP if the RAM is faulty, but nothing at all about issues when connecting an external display. I am running with all the latest updates, firmware update, etc.
I don't have any problems connecting to a 23" Cinema display or to a 19" Samsung LCD, but I tried several times to connect to the HDTV and got a kernel panic each time. I changed resolutions on one try and still got the same issue (720x480 so the TV would see it as 480p). I even tried booting up with the display already connected and it kernel panic'd when it tried to switch into the full OS X GUI.
The specific error is in the panic.log is:

  • Kernel Panic when using Garageband with Blue Snowball USB mic

    *HI ALL,*
*I purchased Mac Pro recently about 3 weeks ago. I am on the latest updates including the recent firmware update. However whenever I use garageband with external USB mic(Blue Snowball) my Kernel Panics and OS freezes and forces me to Power On again. It happened 20 times so far in few hours.*
*I opened garageband first time today after bought this external mic from apple store. I did not use garageband without this mic plugged into USB, I only used garageband with MIC plugged in and in couple of minutes to 5 minutes of using garageband the Kernel Panic occurs. Need your help please. Here is the message I get after login again which I reported consistently to Apple. Any immediate help is appreciated. I use iMove, iPhoto and other apps without any problem. Harddisk verification went o.k.*

I've been getting a number of kernel panics when using USB Mics with Skype, though I have not experienced any crashes when using Garageband.
The crash report cited the AppleUSBAudio driver as the culprit. Here's the set up:
    MacBookPro Core2 2.66 15"
    Mac OS X 10.5.2
Blue Snowflake USB Mic, Blue Snowball USB Mic
    Skype (latest rev - 2.7.0.257)

Seems to be a lot of crashiness with USB Audio in 10.5.2 - let's hope we see a patch soon

  • Kernel panic when I try startx: edited again

I just reinstalled arch (slight mishap yesterday  ) I'm running testing, have installed xorg, kde, ati stuff, etc. When I try to startx I get a "kernel panic not syncing". Has something to do with xorg configeration.

    KeepItSimple:
If you're getting a kernel panic when trying to install, then I'd start with RAM and the installation disks.
RAM: Panther has higher standards for RAM than does 10.2.x; if you have more than one RAM module, take one out (assuming that leaves you with at least 128 MB) and try again. If it panics again, try switching the RAM. As far a brand names go, I prefere Kingston or Azen RAM.
Installation Disks: if they're grey, they won't work. Grey installation disks are packaged with specific Macs, and only contain hardware drivers for that specific Mac. You need the retail version of the disks, which were sold in a black box. There are four CDs in the set, three of which are for installing the OS (the fourth contains Developer Tools). The three OS disks are black with a large silver X in the middle.
    Good luck!
    Andrew
