Kernel Panic when plugged in
I have a 1.5 GHz 15" powerbook (purchased August '05) that has been having a lot of trouble with kernel panics. Normally, this happens when I have some fairly intensive program running, like Luna Insight. And here's the strange part: It only happens when the AC Adapter in plugged in. I've run the hardware test, and everything is coming back passed. On top of that, I have no 3rd party RAM in the machine, it is a pair of factory-installed 512 MB sticks. I've reseated the RAM, tried running with just one stick, reset the PMU, tried just about every energy saver setting, and zapped the PRAM, just in case. Is it time for a logic board swap? Or is there something else I could be missing?
1 of 2 .
1 Either the motherboard has fried or does not get enough power from the wall/electric socket "brown-out" as they are very sensitive to fluctuations in power level. " commen problem in USA"
2 Could be the software, first try to create a new user and installing the program again in the new user and try it maybe this helps then it is in the /user/you/library that the fault lies.
If not then reinstall OSX after making a complete backup to dvd or external hd and reinstall the program again.
Leave the user files IE: documents , music etc off of your MAC and test it if this is stil happening they likely you have hardware issues.
PS: www.macupdate.com look for hardware monitor or go to http://www.bresink.de/osx/index.html as you can run this in trail mode and it should show you the voltages of the whole system even fan speed for left and right fan etc. ????
You might want to keep an eye on the battery and ac line and see if there is a lot of fluctuation esp. on Power cable if so then there might not be hardware issues for now but it could over a long time damage you Pbook by fluctuating too much. "see espc. when clothes dryer starts up how it dips"
Agian if not then Hardware problem and call Apple Care.
Best of luck.
Having some Earl grey tea. MMMMMMMM nice.

Kernel Panic when plugging Firewire devices
I have a Kernal Panic each time I plug something in the Firewire ports. I already have tried many things to solve this issue, in vain (see here, in french : http://www.xrings.net/xrings/forum/viewtopic.php?t=216 )
If somebody has any suggestion... Thanks !Thank you jeffdc, but I have done it.
In fact, I've done all the things I could think about : they are listed in the link referring to an other forum (in french) in the first topic of this discussion :
http://www.xrings.net/xrings/forum/viewtopic.php?t=216.
I translate it here in english :
MY MAC. Power PC G4 800 MHz 256 Mo. System : OS X 10.4.2.
ISSUE. Kernel Panic each time I try to connect any kind of device (HD, iPod) to any of my Firewire ports.
CABLES AND DEVICES. I changed external Firewire cables and devices to be sure that the problem was not coming from them. The kernel panic appears systematicaly after connecting to the Firewire ports, when the computer is switched on as switched off with a reset...
FIREWIRE PORTS. I followed the instructions from the Apple Support Site : disconnect evreything (USB and all ports), switch off and disconnect the computer from the electricity alimentation cable, wait a few minutes, reconnect, switch on. Nothing changed.
HARDWARE TEST. I reboot on the Apple Hardware Test CD. Results were OK. I've done it twice : first time with iPod connected on the firewire, second time with nothing connected on the firewire port. First time the result was OK : firewire was indicated as "present". Second time it was OK too : it was indicated as "absent". So the computer is able to detect the Firewire device... (PS. I don't have any trouble with the iPod, nor with the software nor with the hardware, when the connection is with USB, so the iPod and its software are OK.)
AUTORISATIONS. I have of course repaired the autorisations with Disk Utility. Nothing changed.
NVRAM. I have done a reboot in Open Firmware (pommealt+of) to reset the Non Volatil RAM (reset-nvram, reset-all). For no result.
CORRUPTED, HIDDEN FILES. I've tried to do a big cleaning with Applejack utility (corrupted files etc.) in Open Firmware again. Again in vain.
NEW SYSTEM ON A PARTITION. My HD is divided en three partitions, so I've done a reboot on the Installation CD from my old 10.2 System on a partition containing only documents. I made a reset on that System, done a few upgradings (System, iTunes and iPod), and now that partition is 10.2.8.
NEW FIREWIRE TEST ON THE REINSTALLED SYSTEM. Under that freshly reinstalled System 10.2.8, I tried again to connect the iPod on the FireWire port : Kernel Panic again.
QUESTION. So, what does happen ? Is it a software or a hardware issue ? Or an original bug in the 10.2 system ? What can I do ?
Thank you again to all the people who have already read my post and took time to give me an answer, and to all the people who will do it. -
What is wrong with my user account?? Why do I get kernel panic when restart
Hi there. I got Leopard and was quite unhappy (don't think it was meant for a powerbook). So I started using Tiger again, and I flip flopped once or twice after the update came out for Leopard, thinking/hoping it would fix my problems. It didn't. I have given up on Leopard.
But, now Tiger seems to have a few problems of its own. I get the kernel panic when I restart my computer (telling me to restart), so I have to hold down the power button to turn it off and then turn it back on. Not a big deal, but if it shouldn't be doing that, I don't want it to, ya know? Never did it before Leopard.
My user account seems to be dysfunctional when it comes to downloading plug-ins for safari or firefox. I had to create a new user account and download the plug in from that account and then drag it into the HD to use it on my user account. I repaired disk permissions and booted from Tiger and did the same thing on there. After that, my user account is still not able to download that plug-in without getting errors (256)?
Is there a way to do a reinstall of Tiger from a blank slate, and be sure there won't be any problems?
Thanks!Leopard will work with your Powerbook, the question is, is all your software and hardware ready for it?
Is there a way to do a reinstall of Tiger from a blank slate, and be sure there won't be any problems?
You can start from a blank slate, but if you have a hardware problem that started to generate itself, a blank slate won't solve it. It is called an erase and install. The first thing to do is backup your data*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Once that is done at least twice, we can start looking at solutions for kernel panics*:

Kernel panic when waking PowerBook from sleep on a new network
I occasionally take my PowerBook from home to work, and lately there have been several instances of my PB having a kernel panic when I plug in the ethernet cable and wake it from sleep. I have not tested this extensively, but it seems to occur under the following conditions:
1. PB is disconnected from network location 1, and the lid is closed so that it goes to sleep.
2. PB is moved to network location 2, the ethernet cable at that location is plugged in, and then the computer lid is opened, causing the computer to awake from sleep.
3. The computer has a kernel panic immediately on awaking.
I believe, but am not absolutely positive, that this does not occur if I awake the computer first, and then plug in the ethernet cable. Unfortunately that order of doing things is counter-intuitive to me, as I tend to want to plug everything in before waking the computer up.
Possibly a factor: At my home location I have a manually assigned IP address and other location-specific settings, whereas at work I change the network settings to fully automatic once the computer starts up.Hello DistantThunder
In most cases kernel panics are a result of a hardware error on some cases a software error.
I would suggest you look at an excellent procedure for resolving these issues on Dr Smoke's website.

Kernel Panic when using Garageband with Blue Snowball USB mic
*HI ALL,*
*I purchased Mac Pro recently about 3 weeks ago. I am on the latest updates including the recent firmware update. However whenever I use garageband with external USB mic(Blue Snowball) my Kernel Panics and OS freezes and forces me to Power On again. It happened 20 times so far in few hours.*
*I opened garageband first time today after bought this external mic from apple store. I did not use garageband without this mic plugged into USB, I only used garageband with MIC plugged in and in couple of minutes to 5 minutes of using garageband the Kernel Panic occurs. Need your help please. Here is the message I get after login again which I reported consistently to Apple. Any immediate help is appreciated. I use iMove, iPhoto and other apps without any problem. Harddisk verification went o.k.*

Kernel Panic when attaching time machine USB external drive
Really hope someone can help me with this.
I've got a late 2011 Macbook Pro, and was running Time Machine on a 500GB GDrive USB external drive. Was working fine when I last attached it on Feb 29. The Time Machine backup was encrypted.
When I tried to use it yesterday, as I have lost all my iTunes data on another drive, I got a Kernel Panic when I entered the password for the drive.
I managed to de-encrypt the drive using Disk Utility, but now I get a Kernel Panic everytime I plug the **** drive in.
I really need this backup data, would appreciate any help people can offer. Am running Lion 7.3, and the same error occurs on a Lion iMac that I have tried the drive on.Really hope someone can help me with this.

I just reinstalled arch (slight mishap yesterday  ) I'm running testing, have installed xorg, kde, ati stuff, etc. When I try to startx I get a "kernel panic not syncing". Has something to do with xorg configeration.
Any ideas :?:
If I just run xorgconfig no panic when I then run aticonfig etc panic.
For the moment I've given up on fglrx and am just trying radeon. the message I get says the system can't find the radeon driver :?:

If you're getting a kernel panic when trying to install, then I'd start with RAM and the installation disks.
RAM: Panther has higher standards for RAM than does 10.2.x; if you have more than one RAM module, take one out (assuming that leaves you with at least 128 MB) and try again. If it panics again, try switching the RAM. As far a brand names go, I prefere Kingston or Azen RAM.
Installation Disks: if they're grey, they won't work. Grey installation disks are packaged with specific Macs, and only contain hardware drivers for that specific Mac. You need the retail version of the disks, which were sold in a black box. There are four CDs in the set, three of which are for installing the OS (the fourth contains Developer Tools). The three OS disks are black with a large silver X in the middle.
Good luck!

Kernel Panic when I try to install OSX 10.3. Can anyone help?
I bought this iMac recently. It has OS 10.2.? installed and OS 9.1. When I try to install OS 10.3 I get a Kernel Panic when it reboots to start the installation. I ran the Norton Disk Doctor it had over in OS9 -- said it fixed some things and now ok but I still get a Kernel Panic trying to install Panther. I just want to re-format the whole computer with 10.3 and get rid of 9. How can I do that?
Thanks.KeepItSimple:

Kernel Panic when I use hot corner to put display to sleep (twice)
As the title above says, for the second night in a row, my new iMac (2012) has had a kernel panic when I perform that action. I also turn off my magic mouse to save the batteries but I'm constantly doing both of these actions throughout the day when I know I'm not going to being using my iMac for some time. Both occurences happened on consecutive nights. Any help would be greatly appreciated

If the panic is recurrent, I suggest you uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can identify which one is at fault. A conflict between modifications may be involved. Reboot and test after each uninstallation.

MBP Kernel Panic when connecting to HDTV (DVI)
I have a 15" MacBook Pro that has been working perfectly since I got it. I tried today to connect it to my Hitachi 51" HDTV (via DVI) and got an instant Kernel Panic. I used my 15" Powerbook with this HDTV without any issues.
I've searched and found folks with kernel panics when waking their MBP if the RAM is faulty, but nothing at all about issues when connecting an external display. I am running with all the latest updates, firmware update, etc.
I don't have any problems connecting to a 23" Cinema display or to a 19" Samsung LCD, but I tried several times to connect to the HDTV and got a kernel panic each time. I changed resolutions on one try and still got the same issue (720x480 so the TV would see it as 480p). I even tried booting up with the display already connected and it kernel panic'd when it tried to switch into the full OS X GUI.
The specific error is in the panic.log is:
Sat Jun 10 16:23:48 2006

So definitely something with the graphics subsystem. Anyone have any hints?
MacBook Pro 2GHz 2GB RAM ATI x1600 256MB Mac OS X (10.4.6)What happens if you boot from the DVD that came with the MBP instead of booting from your hard drive? It could have something to do with your configuration.

gfxCardStatus by cody krieger may help by allowing you to keep the graphics set to one of the two modes
In any case : take it to Apple or an AASP & show them the report They should run a specific test with a simple pass/fail result shown on screen.
The three year period since purchase has probably passed; but nonetheless, if you're asked to pay, I'd call Apple customer service (or speak to the store manager ) & request that they consider your case. Several users here have previously obtained free repairs after doing so, even though outside the time limit. Here's a fairly recent one,

I tried updating our G5 Xserve with the 10.4.7 DVD. Since I have only a CD drive in the Xserve, I used a Mac Mini in target mode with the Server Install DVD in the MacMini DVD drive. Upon restart at the beginning of the install process, I get a Kernal panic.
I have a Village Tronic MPDDpro graphics card with latest drivers. 1 GB of memory. (I also tried using an external DVD firewire drive, but get the same kernel panic when Xserve tries to boot from the OS X Server DVD)
I was unable to get the xrdiags to provide any output. Tried unsuccessfully to get a Mac Mini running OS X Server to Netboot properly, so tried with xrdiags on a CD. Again no output back to the terminal administering the xrdiags start.
I tried putting the Xserve in target mode and installing the 10.4.7 from the Mac Mini. Install process went through successfully, but when I rebooted the Xserve, and before getting to the Setup Assistant, I got the Kernel Panic again.
Needing then to re-install 10.3, I reinstalled the 10.3 Server with the original disks and updated to 10.3.9 and reinstalled all the application software and setup users etc, (days of work) all went well with 10.3.9 Server.
I need to get up to 10.4.7 soon!
Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks for helping. I'm green at this! Getting definite experience as you can see, but can you help me with an actual real live make and model of a graphics card that is known to work on the G5 Xserve?
I called ATI re: their Radeon 9200, and was told by tech support that they do not support this card on the G5 Xserve. Yet, Scott Maiden, in his post above, referenced an ATI Radeon card.
What cards are being successfully used? Can I have a list?
Apple Tech Support will not give any such list. Maybe they know of some problem with all? (When I bought the Xserve in September of 2004, Apple Tech Support recommended the VillageTronic card.) The new, yet un-released Quad-core 64-bit Intel Xeon Xserve has "built-in graphics functionality, with mini-DVI output and support for industry-standard VGA displays," according to Apple's web site. Hopefully this will eliminate this type of problem in future releases of Xserve. But for the nasty here and now...
All I need is an inexpensive graphics card to administer this Xserve. Currently I am using a 21” SuperMatch SVGA monitor.
Thank to all who have helped.

The only cards I have found to work reliably in the
G5 XServe are the cheap-arse PCI models. I do not use
my XServe for serious graphics work so I do not know
how it works with other cards.
Can you swap in a known compatible PCI card for
testing purposes?

Experiencing Kernel Panic when computer sleeps???
I have a late 2013 MBP... I recently updated my OS to 10.9.2 Immediately after updating my computer began experiencing kernel panics when it would sleep for various amounts of time (couldn't recognize a real pattern). After a few days the problem seemed to happen more frequently and eventually happened everytime the computer went to sleep. I contacted Apple Support and they have deduced that it is a hardware issue (doesn't make sense to me since it only started happening after a software update?). I did install an aftermarket SSD, so I thought perhaps that was the problem, so I installed a new one... to no avail, still experiencing the same problem. I've come up with a temporary solution... I simply have my computers settings adjusted so that my computer does not sleep. This obviously has not solved my problem, but is a temporary fix. Anybody have any ideas as to what is going on???? Thanks in advance!
The version of virtual box I have on my system may not be the most absolute current up to date, but it is certainly the mac os version. Besides, virtual box wasn't running. It's just a freebie alternative to Parallels allowing me to run windows. But again, unless I'm doing something in windows, virtual box isn't even fired up. It wasn't last night when I put the system to sleep.
How do I find the hardware test that came with my system? Is it on the install dvd? What's it called?
THANKS!!
