Kernel panic when trying to upgrade from OS X 10.7.5

Running an intel imac with os x 10.7.5, I tried upgrading to mavericks. After downloading and try to restart, I get a persistent kernel panic. Have used disk utility from recovery HD to repair permissions and repair disk. Still get kernel panic screen on restart. What now?

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid. Select the most recent panic report (with a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic") under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang report.

  • My Macbook has a Kernel Panic when trying to boot from Mac OS Install DVD

It might also be relevant that my Accounts Preference Panel crashes System Preferences when I try to open it. Disk Utility sees no problems with my drive, and booting into single user mode and doing a disk check has no results.
    I am running a 2010 Macbook
    2GB Ram
    2.4 Duel Core Processor
    Mac OS 10.6.8
Windows Installed Via Bootcamp, but problems occured before Windows was installed as well.
Anything Else that I need to add?

Try reinstalling Snow Leopard. If you continue getting a kernel panic booting from the DVD, then either you have a bad installer disc or you have a hardware failure.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • IMac shuts down when trying to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard

My iMac, purchased in November of '07, came installed with Tiger but also came with a Leopard OS update disk. When trying to upgrade to Leopard last week, every time I rebooted off the disk the computer would run for a minute in the gray screen and then suddenly shut off with no warning message. I checked HD in disk utilities, repaired my permissions and tried again with the same results. I've got 30 gigs of free space and 4 gigs of RAM which should be plenty. I talked to Apple support who walked me through the installation procedure with the same results and ended up shipping me a new install disk which came today. I am getting the same shut down on reboot with their replacement disk. Apple actually sent me two white disks. The first is labeled "For Mac Computers, Mac OSX Install disc 1" The second is labeled "MacBook, Mac OSX Install Disc 2" Since the second disc is label "MacBook" is it possible they sent me the wrong set of discs?
    Thanks

    rk87,
Thanks for replying. I have a 500 gig hard drive which yields a 465gig usable capacity, so, at 30 Gigs available, I don't have 10% of the drive free. This may be an issue, but my more immediate problem is that I can't get the install disk to boot up at all.
I called apple support again see what I could find out about the install disks which wouldn't work. The support guy seemed like he had a lot of knowledge about the system and suggested trying the Tiger install disk (that came with the machine) to see if it would boot up, which it did. After that success, I tried the Leopard update disk in another iMac I have at home and it worked as it should. Since the disk worked fine on the other mac, the guy at tech support speculated that there is some sort of hardware issue causing the install shut down on the computer in question.
His speculation was about the memory installed in the machine which might be the issue. I had bought the computer from an Apple Authorized store here in town who upgraded the RAM to 4GIGs using third-party memory. Even though the memory seems to have functioned properly for the past year, apple support says that there could be some sort of incompatibility with the third party product causing the install disk not to work.
Apple support told me about running a memory diagnostic off of the Tiger install disk by rebooting with the disk in the computer and hold down the "D" key. After I got off the phone I ran the test which turned out to take an hour in its long version. The test indicated no problems, but apple had told me that it might not be totally conclusive. At this point, I'm taking the computer back to the store where I bought it and will let them figure it out.

  • Snow Leopard Kernel Panics when trying to Force Quit Applications

I have been having this problem for about a month now. I am a heavy After Effects CS4 user so this happens to me primarily when working in AE, but definitely is not exclusive to AE. I am working on a 8 Core 2.66 GHz MacPro with 8 GB of RAM. The only other variables are an AJA KONA LSe capture card and a ATTO Celerity FC-41ES Fibre Card. The videocard is the standard ATI Radeon HD 4870. My drivers and software are all up to date.

    Hi Mike,
I have a very similar setup and am also using AE CS4 heavily. I am experiencing exactly the same issues, and have found that it is the multi-processing rendering app (aeselflink) that is causing the kernel panic when you force quit.
I have reduced the amount of times this happens by making AE only use 6 of the 8 cores available, in the Memory & Multiprocessing preference section.
I save my work before rendering or previewing and cross my fingers !

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
First because FB uses Java to go Safari/Preferences and select the Security tab. Where you see; Web content Make sure the top 3 buttons are checked.
Next, go here for help to install the Facebook plugin now required for uploading images.
    http://www.facebook.com/help/?ref=pf#!/help.php?page=830
Go here to make sure the Facebook plugin is installed, go to ~/Libraryy/Internet Plug-Ins/ and make sure this file is there: fbplugin1_01.plugin.
Make sure you are running the latest version of Safari. From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/About Safari. It should be 4.0.4 If not, click the Apple Menu/Software Updates to bring your system sofware up to date.
    Then repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Mac Pro gets kernel panic while trying to boot from Leopard install disk

    Hi all,
I'm finally getting around to installing leopard on my 2006 Mac Pro. It has the x1900 video card from Apple and all firmware is up to date. The install disk upgraded my Macbook with no problems.
When booting I get the wipe to grey, kernel panic, "You must restart your Mac" screen. Any suggestions?
BTW the Leopard install disk installs OSX 10.5.0
    Thanks
    Pax

I finally found that the mac pro needs installer 10.5.2 or it will do the kernel panic thing. I did find a way around this though.
    1) I took an external drive hooked to my macbook and installed 10.5 on it. Then booted from it and did all the updates, installed all my necessary software (ilife 08, parallels, and so on).
    2) I then made sure my Mac pro's drive was currently backed up and then booted up from the backup and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the new OS 10.5.4 Leopard disk onto my Mac Pro boot drive.
    3) After that I used migration assistant to transfer all my user settings and such.
It all worked great and I now have Leopard on my Mac Pro.
Just thought I'd let everyone know how I got around it.

  • My 2012 MacBook Air 13 kernel panics when its opened up from a sleep

My 2012 Macbook Air 13 (512/2.0ghz/8gb) crashes (kernel panic) after the SMC update.  It crashes when you open it after it has been sleeping for about 8 hours.  It does this after it sits for about 8 hours closed (sleeping) on battery and while plugged in.  It is easy to replicate, it happens every day when I come in to work and then when I open it to work in the evening.  I have submitted the crash report to Apple each time it happens and explained the circumstances which caused it to crash.  Anyone else having this issue?  I'm on 10.8 and applied the recent SMC update.  It never did this on Lion (what it shipped with).
Are there any power nap logs I can check to see if that is causing the issue?  Can I disable power nap to try that?

im having the same issue as you zaze. my march 2012 macbook air hang every single time when it try to wake up from sleep mode. it started to happen after i upgrade to mountain lion and then the smc update. i believe is the smc update[power nap specifically] issue, because before that patch the Mountain Lion OS is doing fine[i update the smc patch a week after it was release so i'm pretty sure is tht smc patch issue.
tire of playing around with the config, on this and off tht, it does not help at all and still hang[keyboard not responding , screen hang, sometimes cursur can move but it can do nothing with it].
i need to go through this multiple times a day until i so fed up that i change sleep mode to kick in after it idle for 1 hour.

  • Kernel panic when trying to use spotlight with external display attached

Having an issue with my fairly new MacBook Pro (purchased in April). When it's connected to an external display, I will get a kernel panic 100% of the time if I click on the Spotlight icon. The same also happens sometimes when clicking Documents or Downloads in the dock, but that is infrequent. This only happens with an external display attached and I have tried multiple external displays and cables. Following is the kernel panic report. I don't really know how to read it, so if anyone has suggestions they would be much appreciated.

Though it doesn't look like one of them is clearly responsible, it may be due to the presence of one or more of these kernel extensions:
    com.cisco.nke.ipsec 2.0.1
    com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 5.0
    com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge 5.0
    com.parallels.kext.prlusbconnect 5.0

    com.jft.driver.PdaNetDrv 1.0.64
    com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor 5.0
    com.Logitech.Unifying.HID Driver 1.1.0
    com.Logitech.Control Center.HID Driver 3.2.0
As a first debugging step, try rebooting in safe mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
and see if the panics occur then, though quite frankly it appears it may be an issue with your video card and/or drivers.

  • Repeated Kernel Panics on MBP17" after upgrading from SL (without anything else) to LION or MAVERICKS .

All  tentatives to upgrade from SL to LION or MAVERICKS on my MBP17" causes a KERNEL panic.
SL was reinstalled on several HDD and SSD WITHOUT anything else.
Any update to LiON or MAVERICKS will result in an immediate Kernel Panic.
    Any clue?
    Thanks

    Thanks for your quick answer.
I am the only administrator of my personnal MAC (only one account)
I can't even start in safe mode, there is no firevault nor firmware password , nor RAID volume.
Therefore I had to format the disk and reinstall SL that works like a charm. No way to access the console ….
Any attempt to install LION or MAVERICKS results in a KERNEL PANIC during installation ...
There is no apps installed, no peripheral attached,
By chance I managed somehow to print a log report (see below)

  • Error message when trying to upgrade from 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.5

Hope somebody can help. I'm fairly recent to macs as have always built and used pcs. Am having trouble upgrading from current pantherOS to Tiger. Bought emac with upgrade disc provided by seller. Disc was gray labelled emac. Installation went fine and everything was proceeding to point it finished writing files, configuring installation, and running installer scripts and then it quit with message: error installing software. Try reinstalling.
Tried reinstallation and same thing occurred. then Tried complete erase and new installation. Same error message.
Came to discussion group searching for something I might be doing wrong. Decided maybe disc was wrong even though it specified emac which is what I am using. Bought generic install disc that would install on any G3/4/5 with minimum specs per hardware which system met.Installation proceeded as it was going to install same as emac disc. This is normal full install disc for generic installation.
All installations screens came up and installation proceeded to same point as before and then quit with same message: error installing software/ Try reinstalling.
Have removed ram to original 256MB and tried. No luck. I am using external DVD for installation of DVD and wonder if this is problem but in the forums external DVD seems to work alright. Can reinstall old Panther OS without any problem
Ran hardware test and everything checked okay.
Should I just forget about upgrading and use 10.3.9 but would really like to know what is wrong. thanks. Rick

  • Error 1053 when trying to upgrade from BOE 3.0 Fix Pack 3 to BOE 3.1 Update

Hi! I am trying to upgrade my BOE 3.0 FP3 Server to 3.1 (Update package, not full 3.1 install). The upgrade goes very well, and for a very long time, up until the very end. At the end when it tries to restart the Tomcat service it throws an error 1053 with the following message.
The Apache Tomcat 5.5.20 service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
I also get this same message if I try to start the service through Control Panel -->  services or through CCM. The event viewer shows this message also in addition to the following..
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Apache Tomcat 5.5.20 service to connect.
Has anyone seen this before or know if this is a known error? I am hoping for a workaround so I dont have to backout or reinstall!
    Thanks!
    --Antonio

    Hi Antonio,
Following information might help you to resolve the issue.
    Solution1:
To resolve this behavior, use Computer Management to update the user profile so it is a member of the Administrators group, and then reboot the server to validate your changes.
    Solution2:
You can disable DEP or add services to it:
1.Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
    2.Click the Advanced tab.
3.In the Performances section click Settings.
4.Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
5.Use the Add button on the bottom to add the service's executables and ensure the box is checked. Do this for each Crystal Enterprise service.
Alternatively, you can disable DEP by checking the Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only option. By doing so, it will disable DEP to all applications on the machine including Business Objects.
    Solution3:
Increase the service time-out for Windows Services : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839803http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886695

when i try and upgrade from 10.7.5 osx lion to 10.9 i get an error, i have 2GB of memory and 144MB of storage. can someone help?

This would indicate that your MacBook Air does not meet the requirements for Mavericks.
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space

  • Kernel Panic when Remote users disconnects from AFP share

System 1 Macbook System 2 Mac Pro both 10.4.8. On my Macbook I mount an AFP share (Not SMB but a public share) on the Mac Pro. After copying files etc if I disconnect the share the Mac Pro will throw a kernel Panic. Found it odd that the Mac Pro dies even though I'm actually on the Macbook mounting and unmounting the shares. I couldn't find anything online about this. Anybody have an idea how to fix? SMB doesn't cause this problem only MAC to MAC.
    Thanks,
    dave.

Thanks for helping. I'm green at this! Getting definite experience as you can see, but can you help me with an actual real live make and model of a graphics card that is known to work on the G5 Xserve?
I called ATI re: their Radeon 9200, and was told by tech support that they do not support this card on the G5 Xserve. Yet, Scott Maiden, in his post above, referenced an ATI Radeon card.
What cards are being successfully used? Can I have a list?
Apple Tech Support will not give any such list. Maybe they know of some problem with all? (When I bought the Xserve in September of 2004, Apple Tech Support recommended the VillageTronic card.) The new, yet un-released Quad-core 64-bit Intel Xeon Xserve has "built-in graphics functionality, with mini-DVI output and support for industry-standard VGA displays," according to Apple's web site. Hopefully this will eliminate this type of problem in future releases of Xserve. But for the nasty here and now...
All I need is an inexpensive graphics card to administer this Xserve. Currently I am using a 21” SuperMatch SVGA monitor.
Thank to all who have helped.

The only cards I have found to work reliably in the
G5 XServe are the cheap-arse PCI models. I do not use
my XServe for serious graphics work so I do not know
how it works with other cards.
Can you swap in a known compatible PCI card for
    testing purposes?
