Kernel panic with drive insertion

I have been using Raid1 (mirroring) for quite some time, built / managed by Disk Utility. Today I pulled the two drives I had installed in my Mac Pro that were raided together and replaced them with larger capacity drives. I booted and created the volume just fine. However, when I try to mount one of the drives from the removed older volume, the machine panics every time. I was rather hopeful that I'd be able to migrate the data from the old small volume onto the newly created large volume. Anyone out there know how to get around this?

If you have access to another Mac running Snow Leopard, and can start up in Target Disc mode on the MBP, have you tried running Disk Utility (or another more power utility like DiskWarrior or Drive Genius) over the drive to repair disk / directories?
I'm wondering whether the computer may be having trouble accessing the boot.efi file on the hard drive, causing the boot problems.
Will the computer boot successfully from a Leopard or Tiger DVD? Or from an external drive with Tiger, leopard or Snow Leopard?
What happens if you try booting in "Safe" Mode (ie with the shift key held down).
Tried the basics like a PRAM and an SMC reset?
Did anything particular occur prior to the problem occuring?
Cheers

  • Frequent kernel panics with MPB 2.0 with 2GB RAM

I have been having frequent kernel panics with my MPB. I have 2GB of RAM that came pre-installed from the factory. This seems to happen most often when I am using external firewire drives. Has anyone out there had similar problems?

I've done the permission repairs. Also zapped the
PRAM. Ran the hardware test off the installer DVD
and it immediately came back with an error code
(4MEM/1/60000000:) and told me to contact Applecare.
I called Applecare and they were not very helpful.
The operator I spoke with had no idea what the
error code meant. He told me that RAM either works
or it doesn't. The PRAM zap was done at his
suggestion. Hasn't changed a thing. The kernel
panics have only grown more steady over the past
couple of weeks. More frustrating are frequent and
repeated application crashes (even simple stuff like
Safari, Mail, Address Book and Preview). Applecare
suggested I do a clean install of the OS. But it
sounds like a hardware issue to me. The app crashes
are occurring in different accounts on my MPB. I
don't want to spent a half-day reinstalling all of
my software only to have the issues continue. I'm
going to try to re-seat the RAM and then make an
appointment at the genius bar to have them take a
look at this. It had been running perfectly for the
    first few weeks.
If you had an error code during the Hardware Test your MBP has a problem. The 4MEM/1/60000000: maybe linked to bad RAM or not seated correctly. If not seated correctly it will not boot, so it sounds like a bad RAM slot or memory stick.

  • Kernel Panic with AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement on Macbook Pro Retina 15

    Hello,
I'm getting Kernel Panic with grey "Death Screen". This happends 5 times. On 5-th of January (3 times) and on 8-th (2 times).
All the cases according to Consol reports have similar symphtoms:
    panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff802aeb7e75): Kernel trap at 0xffffff7face2557e, type 13=general protection, registers:
    Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
    com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement(196.0)[F79878E3-8CF9-3ACF-B578-2CE 754CA61F8]@0xffffff7face0e000->0xffffff7face36fff
This line (besides many others) is different in reports
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: WindowServer (2 times)
And other one quicklookd, WebProcess and Web Service.
I sent all reports to Apple Support as MAC OS asked me about. BTW I can publish them again here.
Firstly, may be it's possible to figure out the reason of panics: Is this the SW or HW problem?
Guys at service told me to bring Macbook AS IS. But if this is the SW problem I can clean / reinstall OS etc. myself.
And (after cleaning and/or reinstalling) if the problem is in HW I'll be getting panics again. So I can bring to service Macbook with new history of panics.
So what is the probability of HW problem in such a case. When all reports point to the same .kext file.
    Thank You in advance.
    Cheers,
    Victor
P.S.: Computer is new, I didn't change configuration, OS etc.
Installed programs under question: m3tag (Tag Editor - recompiled by somebody from WIndows program with some similar to CrossOver env.)
    Adobe FlashPlayer Plugin

    Thanks for reply.
Exactly - MP3Tag Wineskin port. I also think that here is the reason. This port is up-to-date (10.8.2 compatible) but very inacurate - I found  many garbage in MP3Tag package.  And the original Windows program is very old - 1984(?).
I removed this program from computer and I have to get a try for some period of time.

  • Kernel panic with PCMCIA wireless cards.

UDEV throws a kernel panic when I insert either of two wireless PCMCIA wireless cards.
UDEV version 106 and the latest kernel 2.6.20.  Both wireless cards worked just fine previously
so I'm sure it's a problem caused by upgrading.
Has anyone else experienced this problem with PCMCIA cards?
    -A

Seems about rite but my system works foro some time and then at some random point freezes... guess it could be the same issue tho.
So its out of arch dev hands and needs a kernel update? Am i right to assume that next time kernel updates its the right time to try 20 series again?
Yeah im drunk, tried to check for typing tho ^^

  • Kernel Panic with Stripes

I've got a 3 year old 15" macbook pro that went into Kernel Panic with Stripes today. There was nothing plugged in except for a power supply. My wife said it was in sleep mode and then she opened it up and displayed the following screen.
    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
I've rebooted it a few times and the same thing keeps happening. I also plugged it into another machine and mounted it as a firewire drive and am currently copying all the files over to another drive.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Bad or incompatible RAM is the most common cause of KP's. It could just need to be reset……. to make sure there's a good connection.
But, in your case.....Video Card? Just guessing from the stripes. Pay heed to running the +Apple Hardware Test+ in the following link.
Here's a great site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
    Here's a great MacFixIt article.

  • Kernel panics with external mouse in clamshell mode

Have had more than 6 kernel panics; usually after waking; always in clamshell mode when using a Logitech wireless mouse (with or w/o software loaded) or Kensington USB trackball (with driver loaded but not worth using w/o driver). Does not happen with Apple USB mouse. Does not happen in laptop mode -- haven't tried laptop mode w/external mouse. Always on work Ethernet when in clamshell mode.
Has occurred w/OS 10.4.9 and 10.4.10. Have run extended Apple hardware test w/no results.
Have removed Logitech “LCC” file from user/library/application enhancers.
Have experienced panics w/a variety of apps open/active, including just Safari.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Greetings.
I'm having the same problem as Beanfield. I'm using a MX620 Logitech Wireless Laser Mouse, and it produces several problems under Mac OS X 10.4.10. The micro receiver is plugged to the rear of my iMac Intel Dual Core and altough I've switched it to the USB ports of my Apple Keyboard it still happens. The Kernel Panics (with the Grey Screen of Death) happen mostly when the mouse awakes the computer. Very often, when right clicking or single clicking items, the menus appear and disappear. Dragging items becomes impossible and even after restarting the iMac the problem persists.
It also interfers with the keyboard: sometimes the cursor blinks when moving and when I press any key on the keyboard, it resumes its normal activity. Recently I've added 1 G of RAM, but I've excluded it from the problem since it worked normaly with my now defunt Mighty Mouse. Also, I bought a 500 G Lacie external drive that works very well.
I'm getting very frustrated since this problems began only a few weeks after my purchases, which took in account full compatibility with my system. All drivers are correctly installed so...what's happening?
    Best Regards

  • Kernel panics with external Apple modem

This question has been raised before, but I'm revisiting it in hopes someone may have found a solution.
I'm getting frequent freezes and failures to awake from sleep, and a number of kernel panics that always implicate the faxmodem:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.driver.AppleSM56KUSBAudio(1.9.14)@0x6d364000->0x6d37efff
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.SM56KUSBAudioFamily(1.5.10)@0x6d34d000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(3.1.5)@0x602000
    com.apple.driver.AppleUSBUHCI(3.1.5)@0x8e1000->0x8eefff
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.4.1)@0x631000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(3.1.5)@0x602000
    com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(3.1.5)@0x602000->0x629fff
When the USB modem is not connected I do not get these KPs.
Apparently there is a firmware conflict between this old Apple modem (I bought it for another machine in 2006) and Intel-based duo-core machines. The Apple Store people tell me the newest Apple USB modems are the same, that is, they have not been updated.
Any ideas? Do I have to buy another fax modem? I just use it for faxes.
    Thanks.

  • Kernel Panics with 10.4.7.

So, did anyone else SUDDENLY get Kernel Panics with the 10.4.7?

    Hi, Anapharya.
No kernel panics on my Macs after 10.4.7 Update.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
    Good luck!

  • Kernel panic with larch5.3 building CD!

Hi, could someone kindly help this.
I got the kernel panic with larch5.3 building CD. I didn't get any error messages during the creating. The error message of starting system is in belowing words.

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Hi gradgrind, Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have added aufs, eject packages. But it seems still cannot work. Sorry for many troubles.
One think. When I create the iso file, it gives a warning message.

  • Kernel Panics with Toast 8

I kept getting kernel panics with iDVD and Toast 7. I upgraded to the iLife '08 and Toast 8, did all the software updates, and firmware updates to the DVD burner, but I'm still getting kernel panics. The computer's a PowerMac G5 dual 2.0 GHz, 3 GB RAM, LaCie Lightscribe DVD dual-layer burner.
    Any ideas?
    TIA

all software is up to date.
iDVD 5 is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). While this article indicates that the application may simply quit, other issues could also appear.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306062
Again, no mention of kernel panics, but Roxio has yet to release an update to Toast 7 to make it compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). An update is planned for the future.

The text of the kernel panic itself may help some more knowledgeable people here to help determine what piece may be causing the trouble. Or if both crashes are related or separate. You can find the text of the panic in the Console utility.

  • Kernel panic with 3TB USB external hard drive

    Hi all,
I have just purchased a 3TB western digital elements hard drive, and formatted into two partitions (one 1tb mac extended, one 2tb ntfs)  but every time I plug it into my macbook pro I get a kernel panic.  I used find file to look for and remove any western digital or wdc extensions / frameworks, and it still happens.  Here's my kernel panic log... any suggestions?
I have winmagic securedoc media viewer for mac 6.1.1 installed (needed for encrypted drives at work), and vmware fusion installed, don't know if those are involved in the panic or if its something else... any help is appreciated.

  • Kernel panic when I insert PCMCIA card

My PCMCIA slot has started having problems upon insertion of cards.
Some cards seem to work OK - was able to transfer data to an external drive.
OTOH, it no longer detects PCMCIA wireless cards that it detected earlier. And, sometimes, if I push them in a little more firmly to be sure their seated, I get a kernel panic. Because of this mechanical aspect, I suspect a hardware problem.
Cards were pulled out of the slot twice recently -- once probably fairly roughly and quickly.
Unfortunately, I've changed enough things lately that it's hard to say if this a hardware or software issue. (OS 10.2 reinstall, changes of user names, passwords, and the abovementioned hardware abuse.) Permission repair has not fixed this problem.
Apple's service manual seems to suggest that Apple service centers don't bother with repairing PCMCIA cages but replace the whole unit.
I read a posting here recently from someone who had fixed a PCMCIA problem recently by reseating his cable to the motherboard. Wallstreets, unfortunately, don't have such a visible cable connection as he had.
Has anyone out there done maintenance on their own PCMCIA cages? I suspect that pulling the cards out may have loosened the connection to the logic board but I realise clearly that I know next to nothing about what seems to be a fairly involved and delicate electromechanical device (slightly kludgy).
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions on how to proceed or pointers to further information.
    many thanks,
    Pat
    Wallstreet 266 Mac OS X (10.2.x)

The 2011 iMacs were originally shipped with OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard and to my knowledge the Retail Snow Leopard DVDs are version 10.6.3 and thus too "old" for your iMac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
Use the grey-labeled OSX Snow Leopard DVD that came with your iMac instead of the Retail one.
If you don't have it anymore, call Apple with ythe serialnumber of your iMac at ahnd and ask for replacement.

  • Kernel panic when I insert and restart OSX tiger CD

I have a slot loading imac PowerPC G3 DVD-ROM drive, 256MB RAM and 10GB HD, which shipped with OS9
I have been using it like this since I bought it, but in recent months it had slowed, crashed a lot etc and I thought it was time to get it up to scratch.
I wanted to upgrade it to OS X tiger, but having done little to maintain my imac over the years thought I better get into good shape before I tried.
Disk first aid had identified a problem with the startup disk which I could only seem to resolve be reinitializing the startup disk from my original CDs. So did this.
I also erased and restored OS9 from the original software restore CD.
I tried to upgrade to tiger straight from OS9 and got into terrible trouble losing image on screen. (attached a borrowed monitor to do repairs)
I then downloaded from the apple site OS9.1 OS9.2 and OS 9.2.2 and installed in order (because I didn’t have CDs I just opened the downloads and installed from there)
I also downloaded new Firmware 4.9.1 and upgraded this.
Screen problem resolved, but now trying to upgrade to tiger from OS 9.2.2 encountering a different problem
Insert tiger CD – big X appears and a button to restart – press this and imac begins to restart – grey screen appears and dark grey apple then stops and a kernel panic (white in black) appears saying
Panic (cpu0 caller ox002de020) unable to find drivers for this platform “power Mac 2,1”
Loads of other text/numbers appear including “backtrace” etc
    Until it comes to
    Panic: we are hanging here
Everything freezes at this point and I have to restart the computer from the restart button and forcibly eject the CD with a paperclip in the force eject button.
Having deleted everything early on I now have no other software installed on the computer other than supplied with above.
And I detached all peripheries before trying to upgrade
Been working on this for days and am getting nowhere, can anyone help?

    Hi Rod
Have you tried running Disk First Aid again (from your original Software install CD) since erasing the drive?
to do this should I boot to the CD by holding down the C key and run disk first aid from the utilities folder on the CD? Am I alright to do this from the OS 9 CD even though I've upgraded through the downloads to OS 9.2.2?
defective, damaged or dirty Tiger DVD
How could I test this? I do have an ibook running Panther but I'm reluctant to get that involved as its working fine and storing a lot of my files while I sort out the imac.
or a DVD drive that needs cleaning
It could be this, how do I clean the DVD drive?
Is there any possibility that an "open firmware password" is set on this computer?
Not sure, I don't think I've set one, how would I check?
I recently bought the Tiger DVD new from Amazon and the RAM is all original Apple RAM.
    thanks for your help

  • Kernel Panic with 10.4.3, 10.4.4

I have a Quicksilver dual 1GHz G4 with 1.25GB of ram. It was ridiculously stable until the 10.4.3 update. With the 10.4.4 update, things got even worse. I now have so many kernel panics as to make the machine unusable.
I've run through the "Resolving Kernel Panics" page step-by-step... run DiskWarrior, run the machine with "plugs-out" (NO FireWire or USB devices plugged in), archive & installed, ran with each stick of ram individually, repaired permissions, zapped the PRAM, run "reset-nvram" and "reset-all" in Open Firmware.... nothing fixes it, nothing seems to be the culprit.
Crash log below. Can anyone help PLEASE?

Sorry, forgot to include that info. I ran the Apple Hardware Test and the TechTool Pro suite of hardware tests.... all passed. (And yes, I had pulled everything FireWire and USB except the Apple keyboard and mouse, which were plugged directly into the Mac.) In addition to the Open Firmware "reset-nvram" and "reset-all", I also hit the CUDA switch on the motherboard. The machine is still giving me kernel panics. The only thing I haven't done yet is pull the hard drives and clean-install onto a new drive. (I hope to do that tonight.)
What's interesting is that the dim-out "You have to restart your computer" screen is gone, and has been replaced by white-on-black text generator text overwriting the GUI display, and after restart there's no "report to Apple" dialog, nor is there any log entry. Having Console and Activity Monitor show nothing out of the ordinary.
For what it's worth, I'm "forcing" the KP by running iTunes with the visualizer running, figuring that's the closest thing to me sitting at it doing stuff and waiting for it to crash out. When it panics, the music goes into a loop of the last 1/2-second of music (i.e. "dit-dit-dit-dit-dit-dit...")
Another item of note is that 10.4.0 (after clean install) and 10.4.2 do not have this problem. The panics only occur under 10.4.3 and 10.4.4.
The text of the white-on-black text is retyped as follows. Notice that the DAR record is the only thing different between the two:

  • Kernel panic/hard drive crash

Preface: I am attempting to recover about a weeks worth of slaving on my masters thesis, that I thought I had backed up but in deed did not.
My computer had a kernel panic while I was using ms word, and the hard disk appears to be the issue. I cannot boot into safe mode, nor use the Disk Utility repair functionality when booting from the os cd (causes a kernel panic).
The Apple Hardware Test gives me inconsistent results. When it there is an error it is:
    2STF/4/3:ASA-100 ata-6 - Master.
Other times it comes back that there is no hardware issue.
I am now trying to get data off of the disk using Disk Utility from another mac. I can see the drive, but repair/verify options are grayed. I am attempting to create a DMG, and am either hung up or it is going very slowly. I see a horizontal blue and white barber shop pole. You know the type that give the illusion of perpetual movement, though nothing really changes?
    my log reads:
    2007-11-25 21:23:06 -0500: Creating Image “AAPL FireWire Target Media.dmg”
My finder is not responding. I am ignoring that, hoping the drive will do something as it goes on 40 minutes, and so I can't look to see if there is even such a file on my computer.
Before this I tried to use Disk Utility 2 and had a similar problem, only earlier in the process. It spent about 40 minutes just trying to bring up my drives. Never an error message or crash, just no indication to the user that this waiting is fruitful. Also just opening the hard drive on the other mac, means it will not be able to shut down normally. Even after disconnecting it a manual reset is required. It seems the hard drive spawns infinite loops.
What is my best bet? Which program(or any other?) is more likely to yield results, given I am supposed to turn it over tomorrow to be repaired by data unfriendly technicians? Please give me any tips that may be relevant.
    Thanks in advance.
    Edit: An Advance!

    2007-11-25 22:25:43 -0500: Unable to create “AAPL FireWire Target Media.dmg”. (Input/output error)
What program would be best to buy if this is recoverable? I saw Disk Warrior and Techtool recommended. I seem to have some access without kernel panics from the second mac, so I am cautiously optimistic. I am now trying a very long verify process, after which I will try to repair the drive. These options where grayed out as of my earlier post. Finder is still frozen.

    Bump.
Data Rescue II has been going all night with no progress on the status bar. There are an assortment of errors at the bottom of the page (14 100022 14 10022 14 100022 14 10005 274 332 14 10005 14 10005 274 332).
This isn't even the recovery process, just brining up the drive.
The drive (target disk mode) eventually - surprise, surprise - popped up in finder. Still I cannot see the data on the drive.
Any thoughts? Is it worth waiting(going on 9 hours just bringing up the drive)? Is it worth trying another program, like Disk Warrior. Is the new version better than the old, other than that it is intel compatible? Or should I just move on. Will Apple give me the old drive so I can through it in a case and work on it further?
    Am I missing something?
