Kernel panic with wifi backup to Time Capsule

I have had no problem with wireless backup to Time Capsule until recently when I would consistently get a kernel panic during the backup. Is it a corrupt file? How would I isolate it? Or could it be a directory problem that DiskWarrior would fix? I can mount the backup image on my desktop OK.
I suppose I could erase my backup image on the Time Capsule, but I dont want to lose all that data. And if I did, what is the best way to archive that TIme Capsule backup image?
Thanks for any help.

First, Repair your backups per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If that doesn't help, here's a bunch of kernel panic info:
Apple Support - About kernel panic messages
Mac OS X Kernel Panic FAQ
The X Lab - Resolving Kernel Panics
Apple Developer - Technical Note TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics

If your backups are ok, erasing the drive probably won't help. But to "archive" the backups, see this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

Will the wifi function of time capsule interfere with my existing home network via my Cisco router?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The routers will only interfere if they are working with the same channel. Time Capsule sets up automatically the channel, so you shouldn't have any problem with both routers

  • Kernel Panic with Stripes

I've got a 3 year old 15" macbook pro that went into Kernel Panic with Stripes today. There was nothing plugged in except for a power supply. My wife said it was in sleep mode and then she opened it up and displayed the following screen.
    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
I've rebooted it a few times and the same thing keeps happening. I also plugged it into another machine and mounted it as a firewire drive and am currently copying all the files over to another drive.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Bad or incompatible RAM is the most common cause of KP's. It could just need to be reset……. to make sure there's a good connection.
But, in your case.....Video Card? Just guessing from the stripes. Pay heed to running the +Apple Hardware Test+ in the following link.

  • Aborted automatic backup to Time Capsule causes machine to freeze

I have a MBP (Santa Rosa) 15" with 2GB RAM (the stock one I got with the MBP)and a newly arrived 500GB Time Capsule, connected via Airport.
I got 2 awful freezes in 4 days: mouse pointer stuck, no way to get back to work without a brutal shutdown (via power button).
I think I tracked down the problem, by looking at system.log.
In both cases the last (or nearly the last) records in the log refer to an aborted backup (I've set up Time Machine) because the machine is not connected to AC-power.
Here are the mentioned lines, after which only the boot sequence log appears.
    Apr 14 23:17:55 Macintosh kernel[0]: AFP_VFS afpfs_mount: /Volumes/MyVolume, pid 3158
Apr 14 23:17:56 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3162]: Not starting automatic backup, running on non-AC power source.
Apr 14 23:19:55 Macintosh com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.netauth.sysagent[3158]): Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 3161 PPID 1 check_afp
    Apr 18 21:07:32 Macintosh kernel[0]: AFP_VFS afpfs_mount: /Volumes/MyVolume, pid 1293
Apr 18 21:07:32 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1297]: Not starting automatic backup, running on non-AC power source.
As you can see in the first one there is an extra line that misguided me before, but it's probably some notice arrived late from a process. In that case I left the machine unattended for a few minutes, in the second one, I noticed the freeze almost immediately. Actually, the clock on the menu-bar was at 21:08 when it froze, so the effect of the freeze follows about 30sec/1min after the triggering event.
I also think that some of the troubles reported here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6967074 might be related to the same event and not to switching locations.

Well, I found a fix. I first moved the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file from the Preference folder to the desktop, just in case I needed in the future (it turns out I didn't). Then I rebooted my computer. Time Machine did not find the .plist file and so I had to select again the disk for backup on Time Capsule. Then I backed up and it finally completed the hourly backup and now it seems back on track with the hourly backups

  • Kernel panics during TM backup

I have been having problems with kernel panics during Time Machine backups and I would like to find out if others have had similar experiences. If this is a problem unique to my configuration, then I need to do more work. If others are having the same issue, then perhaps I just need to wait until a fix is issued.
Some background, I am using TM on two computers, an early 2006 iMac and a first generation Aluminum 15" Powerbook. On the iMac, TM is now very reliable, on the PB, it will ALWAYS kernel panic at least once during a large backup, sometimes 2 or 3 times before it manages to finish the backup. Since I have been playing around with backup disk configurations, I've made several initial backups, so I've also seen quite a few kernel panics, but ONLY when TM is running a large backup.
Are you hit with kernel panics during TM backups? I see some discussion along those lines in this forum.
The most recent initial backup was with Spotlight disabled and it DIDN'T panic. This was unusual. As TM is adding files to the backup disk, Spotlight is busy indexing the new files at the same time. It is possible that the two are not playing well together on the lower performance machines, such as this 1.25 GHz G4. By adding the backup disk to Spotlight's privacy list, Spotlight is inhibited from indexing the backup disk.

For information, this problem appears to be due to some unique problem with my particular computer.
I had been having 2 or 3 kernel panics every day. Finally, I did a Safe Boot and the panics ceased completely. Not one in the last month. Looks like it was some kind of corrupt data that the Safe Boot cleaned up.

  • Kernel Panic with AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement on Macbook Pro Retina 15

    Hello,
I'm getting Kernel Panic with grey "Death Screen". This happends 5 times. On 5-th of January (3 times) and on 8-th (2 times).
All the cases according to Consol reports have similar symphtoms:
    panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff802aeb7e75): Kernel trap at 0xffffff7face2557e, type 13=general protection, registers:
    Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
    com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement(196.0)[F79878E3-8CF9-3ACF-B578-2CE 754CA61F8]@0xffffff7face0e000->0xffffff7face36fff
This line (besides many others) is different in reports
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: WindowServer (2 times)
And other one quicklookd, WebProcess and Web Service.
I sent all reports to Apple Support as MAC OS asked me about. BTW I can publish them again here.
Firstly, may be it's possible to figure out the reason of panics: Is this the SW or HW problem?
Guys at service told me to bring Macbook AS IS. But if this is the SW problem I can clean / reinstall OS etc. myself.
And (after cleaning and/or reinstalling) if the problem is in HW I'll be getting panics again. So I can bring to service Macbook with new history of panics.
So what is the probability of HW problem in such a case. When all reports point to the same .kext file.
    Thank You in advance.
    Cheers,
    Victor
P.S.: Computer is new, I didn't change configuration, OS etc.
Installed programs under question: m3tag (Tag Editor - recompiled by somebody from WIndows program with some similar to CrossOver env.)
    Adobe FlashPlayer Plugin

    Thanks for reply.
Exactly - MP3Tag Wineskin port. I also think that here is the reason. This port is up-to-date (10.8.2 compatible) but very inacurate - I found  many garbage in MP3Tag package.  And the original Windows program is very old - 1984(?).
I removed this program from computer and I have to get a try for some period of time.

  • How to backup from Time Capsule to external HD?

How to set up files backup from Time Capsule to external HD?
Here is configuration: MacBook + MacAir + Time Capsule (which I use as a storage) + 2Tb WD MyPassport (USB connected to TimeCapsule)
I keep files like photos on TimeCapsule to be available by WiFi and I want to set up my Time Machine to backup picture folder from TimeCapsule to MyPassport HD.

Time Machine can't back up a network volume. You'll have to use third-party software. I don't have a specific recommendation. There is no efficient way at all to back up a Time Capsule, which is why it should only be used as a backup destination, not as a general-purpose file server.

  • Transferring backup from Time Capsule to external HD?

Have had many headaches with trying to use Time Capsule wirelessly for backups and also as a router for internet connectivity.
Finally decided to invest in an external HD with 3T of capacity. It is a 'plug and play' unit, already GUID partitioned and I want to transfer my Time Machine backups (that go back to Nov 2010) in total to this new HD, which is connected to my desktop computer with FW800.
Here's my question: This article suggests that all I have to do is to drag the  Backups.backupdb folder to my new external HD, but this is not found on my Time Capsule.
    Instead, I have the following:
[Folder Icon} Desktop (containing 0 items)
    KO's MacPro.sparsebundle
There is a total of 1.39 TB on the Time Capsule, representing backups for the past 2 years.
So do I just drag these 2 items to my external HD?
Also, I'm not confident that copying the files wirelessly is the way to go. However, I've had spotty success with trying to use the TCapsure via ethernet.
    Any suggestions?

Apple now recommends this method for backup of the TC.. see.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5096
Pondini covered it ages ago and with better detail.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
Read the whole thing carefully.. inside the sparsebundle is the backup.. you do not copy the sparsebundle just the backup.

That is never going to work over wireless.
By the time you get it half way something will happen and corrupt it and you need to start over.
TM backup are fairly difficult beasties to backup IMHO.
You must get your ethernet working. I would strongly advise you do this in isolation.. Setup a computer and the TC.. and copy the file across.. no other network connection.. If it still give issues.. something is actually wrong with the TC. How old is it and what model, please give A1xxx from the rubber foot.
The final method.. is to extract the TC hard disk and put it in a USB holder. Then do a copy on the computer, disk to disk. this is much faster btw if you use sata connection on your Pro.. in fact you can do it in a few hours.

  • Suddenly extremely slow Time Machine backups on Time Capsule

My Time Machine backups on Time Capsule have been pretty good in the last few months. In the last week or so I am seeing painfully slow backups. It's not the preparing or the finishing phase, it's the backup itself. Data transfer for other apps is fine. The backup transfers about 50 Kb per second. In more than 3 hours it backed up about 600 Mb. Here's what I get from the Console:

My backup to Time Capsule is taking over 4 million days. How can I shorten the time? I am not able to connect through ethernet. How do I fix this?
Not only that but my Mac Pro keep running and does not stop, my Address book has a blue light under it but wont open, the light for my monitor in the bottom right corner wont turn on or off. Please need help...

It sounds like there is an issue with the Mac itself.
Use the verify disk A5 in troubleshooting.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Even if you cannot connect by ethernet, at current location.. you can simply disconnect the TC from the network and bring it to the Mac and plug it in by ethernet. The TC can be reset if you haven't got a suitable current setup (save previous setup before you change it) and run just as backup device.. do the backup and then return it to the network.
If this is just a standard incremental backup.. then something has broken. The issue is not the TC pe se but failure in hardware somewhere.

  • Backup of Time Capsule

I have got a Time Capsule for making backups of all my devices. In addition I want to regularly backup the Time Capsule itself, however at another address, for abvious safety reasons. What are my options?

The TC has no built in backup.. as you would normally define it.
It has archive.. You plug a USB disk of equal size or larger than the data on the TC, and press archive in the airport utility. It backs up the entire disk.. for large disks it takes 12-24hours.. during that time no backup is possible to the TC. There is no incremental.. no nice rsync.. no attempt to make TM useful.. since it cannot backup network drives.
You can also buy CCC and backup to another disk plugged into the computer.. or a different network drive. But all packets go through the computer.
If you are making a backup of TM backups .. don't bother..
Use TM to backup to multiple destinations..
Or use a different backup software like CCC which is far better to recover with if you need a whole drive restored.

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule. The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be created (error 60)"

We are Mountain Lion using Time Machine to backup to Time Capsule. When the backup tries to run, an error appears after a couple of minutes saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Then an error shows up saying "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule. The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be created (error 60)"
I low level reformatted the Time Capsule and that didn't fix it. I then tried using Time Machine on another computer to back up to that same Time Capsule and it worked- so I'm doubting it's the Time Capsule.
I've noticed that when Time Machine runs, that a  folder called Data  at /Volumes/ appears while Time Machine is trying to back up. I think it's making the sparsebundle to transfer to the Time Capsule.
However, after a couple of minutes- it comes back saying that the disk is unreadable.
I think it's something wrong with either creating the sparsebundle or opening the disk image that seems to be a part of the Time Machine backup process on the local drive.
I am able to create a disk image with Disk Utilitiy without any problem on that system. I've repaired the disk and disk permissions with Disk Utility and replaced the directory with Disk Warrior. I've trashed what preference files I could find and restarted. I've completely removed the backup destination from the computer and added it back again.
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Neil

Yes, exactly.  It makes one sparse bundle per Mac.
It's possible the TC's disk is too full for a new sparse bundle, or there may be some other problem.
Via the Finder, locate the existing sparse bundle (see the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 if you're not sure how to do that).  See how large it is (plus how large anything else that may be there).  If the total is very near the size of the TC, that may be the problem.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question (probably the first one displayed), then copy and post all the messages here.

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the page that opens.
Select the System keychain in the list of keychains in the sidebar of the window. If you don't see the list, click the down-arrow icon below the sidebar.
Then select Passwords in the Category list at lower left. Click the Kind heading in the list of keychain items to arrange it by Kind.
Locate the AirPort Disk Password with the name of your Time Capsule. Double-click the item and check the box marked Show Password in the inspector window that opens. You'll be prompted for the administrator login password. Make a note of the AirPort password, then close the inspector window and delete the item.
Also delete any other AirPort DIsk Password items for that same Time Capsule, which may have had a different name in the past.
Quit Keychain Access and try again to back up.

  • Time Machine Backup to Time Capsule Pauses Airtunes

    Hello,
I have an Airport Express and a MBP which are both wireless clients of a Time Capsule. I use the AX to stream music to my stereo which usually works without any trouble.
The annoying thing is that practically every time Time Machine starts a backup, the music pauses for about a second as if the connection to the AX is lost.
Has anyone else come across this issue and, if so, do you have a solution?
    Thanks
    Simon

Well, I found a fix. I first moved the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file from the Preference folder to the desktop, just in case I needed in the future (it turns out I didn't). Then I rebooted my computer. Time Machine did not find the .plist file and so I had to select again the disk for backup on Time Capsule. Then I backed up and it finally completed the hourly backup and now it seems back on track with the hourly backups
