Kernel Panic: You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again.

I apologize for writing a book, but I think explaining the full story may possibly get me a correct answer.  I hope that someone can give me some insight as to what is the problem with my MacBook Pro.  I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008), model identifier: MacBookPro4,1 running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with 6 GB memory.  My wife first noticed a problem with the display.  Every so often it would get fuzzy with jumping lines going across the screen making it vitually unviewable.  The final time that incident took place the computer froze which required holding down the power button to restart the computer.  The computer started up to the point of the Apple logo and the spinning gear for quite some time until the screen darkened from top to bottom displaying the following message in five different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again."  I have read other blogs and support communities where people get the message intermittently, but my computer would not go past that point no matter what.  Through research and the Apple Store I was told that this is a Kernel Panic.  The so called "Apple Genius" at the local Apple Store was unable to get the computer to boot past that point even with his gadget.  It would not startup in recovery mode, safe mode or off of a disc.  I forget exacty what he told me, but he said it was getting past the first two startup steps, but it would not get past the third step which is to mount the desktop.  He guessed that it may be a problem with the hard drive; a loose wire or something or other.  I disconnected the hard drive completely and took it out.  Everything appered to be connected properly.  Then I installed it back correctly, but it did not solve the issue.  So I guess I disproved his theory of a loose wire...  I purchased ProSoft Data Rescue 3 and connected my MacBook Pro to another Apple computer using a firewire 400 cable.  I was able to get everything I needed off of the hard drive.  I did some more research and I decided to restart the MacBook Pro in verbose mode (holding down the command button and V button).  The computer magically started up!!!  I was upset that I wasted my money on the ProSoft Data Rescue 3.  I managed to take additional items off of the computer and back it up on to an external hard drive.  After some time the computer froze.  I repeated the power button process to restart and received the same kernel panic.  I managed to get the computer to startup approximately six or seven more times via verbose mode; each time the computer staying on for a shorter amount of time before it would freeze.  I managed to run Disk Utitlity.  I performed first aid to fix the hard drive and it said that the hard drive appeared to be fine.  After first aid I erased the hard drive and booted off of a Lion disc to perform a clean install or an erase and install.  Lion installed until the progress bar got the the end where I received a message that there was an error installing Lion, please try again.  Each time I attempted to install the software I would receive the same message.  Eventually the computer would not boot from the Lion disc.  I went back to the Apple Store and the Apple Genius was able to get the computer to boot off of his gadget where Lion istalled completely.  I set up the computer as a new computer.  He said that he partitioned the hard drive as DOS and then back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which would get rid of any errors the drive may have had.  He guessed that the problem was the hard drive, but was not exactly sure.  When I brought it home I installed all of the software applications I had on it previously.  Approximately three days later, which may have been the fifth of sixth time starting up the computer, the display became fuzzy again and the computer froze.  The computer did restart once and I was able to retreive a "log" which I have pasted below.  After if froze for the second time it restarted once using verbose mode and froze almost immediately.  After holding down the power key to shut it down and then restart; I received the same kernel panic after the Apple logo and spinning gear which put me right back to square one.  Now the computer will not boot via any method.  It freezes at the end of verbose mode which forces you to hold down the power button to shut down.  I also read that poorly seated ram may cause this issue, but I removed and installed the ram multiple times.  I even purchased new ram from Other World Computing (Mac Sales) 6 GB, but that did not make a difference.  I think I may see six possible problems on the verbose screen mode, five errors and one warning; I will type them out here:
1. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key $Num (kSMCKeyNotFound)
2. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: $Num kSMCKeyNotFound(0x84) fKeyHashTable=0x0
3. SMC: :smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap ==NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
4. WARNING - ACPI_SMCCtrlLoop: :initCPUCtrlLoop - no sub-config match for MacBookPro4,1 with 8 p-states, using default stepper instead
5. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key MOTP (kSMCKeyNotFound)
6. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key BEMB (kSMCKeyNotFound)
I was hoping that someone could read my log to ascertain wether or not they see a problem that stands out.  I was also hoping that someone could tell me if verbose mode provides any information that may be wrong with my computer.  I just hope that someone can give me some insight as to what may be wrong with my computer.  If it is the hard drive I will easily replace it, but I want to make sure that is the problem first before I waste money on a hard drive or anything else.  Please let me know if anyone requires any other information from me.
Thank you!

I had already written a book and I did not want to bombard people with more information, but in my previous research I did come across the major issues with the NVIDIA card.  I also was well aware that Apple offered a replacement program that ended in December of 2012.  I was going to add that in my original post, but I discounted that theory because I put my faith in the so called "Apple Genius" when I made my second trip to the Apple Store.  I brought the NVIDIA card issue to his attention and asked him if he thought that may be the problem, but he said no.  He said if it was the NVIDIA card that the screen would be completely black and there would be no startup chime.  When I experienced the screen issues I thought it was a problem with the NVIDIA card or the logic board.  I asked myself, how can a flawed hard drive cause the screen to act funny.
nbar and Rick Warren, I thank you both for your help and insight; people like you are the real "Apple Geniuses."  I was hoping there was a way I could wipe the hard drive before I dumped the computer or attempted to sell it.  I guess I will look into purchasing a new machine when I have the funds.  Again...thank you both!

  • " You need to restart your computer, hold down...."

My daughters iBook G4 1.33MHz Power Pc running 10.4.11
She keeps getting the blackscreen message " You need to restart your computer, Hold down.....etc. " This has been done several times but returns about 10 minutes later. Keen to save the computer if possible, so I would be grateful for any advice.
    Thank you
    Mike

    Mike:
Your daughter's computer is having what is called a kernel panic. This can be either hardware or software based, although, more often hardware than software. RAM is one of the most frequent offenders followed by the Airport Express card. If you have installed additional RAM, remove the module you installed and boot without it and see if the KP returns. You can do the same with the Airport card. There are other possibilities, but that's where I would begin. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Resolving Kernel Panics has more information and troubleshooting tips. After you have checked these out please do post back with further questions or comments.

Your MBP may have had a kernel panic.  If so, post the kernel panic per these instructions:

  • Error message "you need to restart you computer hold down the power..."

Hello, I am running an 09 Macbook Pro os x 10.5.7. I just got the above error message while I was browsing the internet and now I cannot load the system. I press restart, but it keeps going to the same screen. I know that this is a kernel panic message but I cannot get in the system to see the error logs. I tried loading the System disc and was able to run Disk Utility from the Cd. The drive is Verified and I ran a Repair Disk and I repaired the Disk Permissions. On completion of both I receive the message "The volume appears to be OK." so it seems like nothing was repaired.
I also ran a Apple Hardware test, and everything came back ok there as well, no problems. But I still cannot load the OS X.
I even tried booting from an external os x via USB that I have, and my mac was able to run that system ok, so I don't think it is a problem with the RAM. I have not loaded any new software, nor have I added any peripherals.
I am not able to boot in safe mode. What else could be causing this error? Is there any way I can access my data to backup so I can zero out the HD and reload the Os X?

If you have and use a Clone Utility (example: donationware, a free-running
tool from Bombich Software known as Carbon Copy Cloner) it can copy
the complete OS X system and apps, to a supported external hard drive
and all of your user files, accounts, contacts and passwords along with
all the applications {as they are and work in the computer} will be saved.
    • Carbon Copy Cloner - home:
    http://www.bombich.com/index.html
Short of having recorded or written down the actual pass keycode of any
third party application requiring it, if you do not make a clone of your Mac
to some boot-capable device with sufficient capacity to use it correctly,
you may lose them. The problem with getting support from software makers
whose products you bought, then lost all documentation, is that they may
not wish to help you; and you may not get a replacement pass keycode to
re-install the application, and won't get replacement install discs if lost.
So, the idea of a complete clone of the computer so you have all that
extra stuff, not just the System but the Applications and files, is about
the best chance of saving the contents just like they are in the computer.
An example of a backup strategy for Mac OS X using Disk Utility and
Carbon Copy Cloner, is as follows on this web site I just found. The
Home site for downloading CCC per above link, also has good info.
PS: When you make a bootable clone, and start the computer from it, for
the first time, be sure to run its Disk Utility, and +repair disc permissions+.

Perhaps someone else may contribute insights; while I have other
chores to attend to, and am a bit rusty with my clone making skills
there's no help for me to get these other tasks done...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I need to restore iPhone but it won't let me until I turn off "Find my iPhone".  I can't turn that off because of the restrictions passcode.   Please help

I have a restrictions passcode on my son's phone.   I had recently changed the code and now what I thought was the new code, isn't working.
I need to restore the phone, but it won't let me until I turn off "Find my iPhone."   I can't turn that off without a passcode.
    Please help!

  • I have run disk utility- the drive is corrupted- I get the error message restart your computer holing down the Cmd

I have now tried every variant of key compbinations but I still get the grey lock icon with a box which won't accept my password.
When re-running disc utility all I get is the same error message

I ran the Disk Utility and got a message that it can't repair the disk. This happened after I did a restart Command and R. After trying the repair cycle I got a message "Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed - up files" I found myself stuck because I couldn't shut down the Disk Utility. Out of frustration and patience I turned the I-Mac off by pressing the start key, thinking it would restart my computer. I feel like a fool now! I started the computer up and all I got was a grey screen with a flashing file with a question mark inside the file icon which is blinking off and on. I tried attaching my Seagate hard drive with no luck. What can I do? Thank You!

  • I just updated FF from 3.6.24 to 8.0.1, restarted my computer, but when I try to open FF, I'm told that I need to restart my computer to complete the installation. How can I fix this?

I can't open FF, without being prompted to reboot. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but get the same prompt to reboot.

Try Safe Mode to get around the loop and see whether it lets you remove just the add-on you want to remove.

  • Why does the "You need to restart your computer" error appear when I open Vuze?

    Hi there,
I apologise that this has probably been asked many times however none of the relevant threads I have come across solved my issue.
I have the most current version of Vuze and a Macbook Pro (Version 10.6.8 OS X).
After using Vuze for a year with zero issues, today I have had to restart my MBP several times due to this error message which is displayed in 5 different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again."
This error only occurs when Vuze is open.
No idea why this is the case. Could it perhaps be a file I am downloading?
Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Don't unplug the M-box while your MBP is on.

  • My computer won't open up in windows when i hold down the option key

I have restarted my computer holding down the option key to start windows and it opens up as mac os

Did you create a Bootcamp partition? Did you install Windows? Holding the option key while booting does not start Windows it shows a boot menu where you can select the operating system to boot.

  • Macbook Pro retina have a network problem that I need to restart my computer before getting it's able to connect to internet

Macbook Pro Retina 15" 2012, Mountain Lion OS pre-installed.
    Case 1:
It connects to WiFi home network and internet fine.
    Put the machine to sleep.
Upon waking up, it can scan for my home network that it used to connect to, but either not able to connect, or even after it connects, it just can't let me access internet.
Restarting the machine can revive by getting it connects properly to internet.
Toggling the Bluetooth won't help here.
    Case 2:
It connects to network using USB ethernet adapter.
Same case, everything works fine before sleep. After sleeping for some time, it's not able to connect to the internet any more unless I do a restart.
It's able to access local area network though, as I'm able to see some local network machines in my Finder window. Yes, I clicked on them and able to connect to their share folders. But just can't get through internet.
OS Problem? I'm not able to roll back to other OS, I swear I don't want to go through that painful process.
Hardware problem : WiFi card? Don't think so, because I can't get to internet even I immediately switch to USB ethernet adapter.
Hardware problem : USB ethernet? It works fine in other non-Mac machines.
There got to be something wrong in somewhere that it doesn't re-establish the connection to the internet, no matter what I do.
None of the functions in the network utility tool can help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Error message - "You need to restart your computer". With Kernel Panic Logs. Please help identify the problem.

Hi, just now my computer just popped out an error message saying that "You need to restart your computer". I was able to power the iMac back (and i'm typing from my iMac). I did some research about it and it has something to do with the kernel panic..either hardware or software. Since i was able to power back my iMac, i supposed it was software-related problem? Here's the log from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/
I'm sorry it was quite long and i have no idea how to attach the text file which i have saved. What could be the problem here? And any suggestions to avoid this from happening again? My heart skipped a beat just now.. Hopefully it was no something serious such as hardware problems..
    thank you!

Suggest you uninstall SoundFlower, LogMeIn and AirParrot and see if that changes anything.
