Kernel Panicing Killed My New Mac Pro
Hi,
Okay so I had a good solid reliable iMac G5 computer for almost three years and decided to upgrade to a Mac Pro because I edit using Final Cut Studio and wanted something with more power behind it. Everything started smoothly enough when i first plugged it in. Then I started getting the dreaded grey shield coming down over the screen and a message saying I had to restart, (basically crashing and losing any information I hadn't saved previously). The panic.log would sometimes list a kernal panic but occasionally say just something like....
Maaaaaccccchine ckkkkaaaeck capaaaaabilitiiiiiiiiies
....all misspelt. I carried on using the machine and it would kernel panic more and more so called Apple Tec and went through EVERYTHING to try to get it working again. This included the Hardwear test, resetting, reloading the Operating System...I mean everything! Memory RAM was taken out swapped around, different hard drives used for the main drive.
Eventually sent to an Apple Service centre, who thought it was one of the drives, replaced it, sent back...turned on and guess what?! Kernel Panic again!!! So sent back, they checked everything, the Bluetooth adaptor, Airport card, memory, drives, even the logic boards....still panicing. So finally after 3 WEEKS of this back and forth the Mac was sent back to Apple and a completely new one is hopefully not far away. This will have basically taken a month out of my work, and I've lost several high paid jobs from it....A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE! So if you start having Kernel Panics, and you get that strange message, just beware. You may be in for trouble.
My question is, has anyone else had this problem ?
I think I read about problems with 8-core model lately, which in some cases, can have a later OS build than even 10.4.10 and I would not be surprised to see a 10.4.11 even.
When the Mac Pro came out there were 3 different builds until we all got to update to a common 10.4.8 which really helped and improved performance. And some SMC and EFI updates thrown in, and one for Nvidia.
Could be somewhat similar for the 8-core is my thought.
As for power requirements, the PSU may be 'asking' for more than needed on wake from sleep, and of course the 4-core * 2 Xeon is 'efficient' but still asks for more than 200W. Add in 10W for each DIMM, some more for each drive, 75-130W for Radeon. Then throw in disk drives, modem/router and a couple displays!
Enough so that finding a reliable UPS was as hard as finding one for a Quad G5. Not easy for some, but 1000VA or above. (I have no idea what type of current UK is on either).
I run with all the fans kicked up to 800 rpm (default is 499-599) which keeps things ventilated and brings DI(MM temp down 10ºC.
I would be worried about the LaCie.
Early on a few people had a USB problem on the back port of their keyboard. (The other left side was okay). So it seems even USB cables sometimes don't work.
Firewire drives and devices have been a problem; or it was the FW ports, either front or back, or running slower than they should. Consumer electronics on Firewire can be troublesome. Maybe one reason why Apple moved to USB2 on iPods, though might have been more about market and cost and more systems have USB.
Because it happens at home and not Apple Store is why I would focus on the wiring and current, and find a circuit just for the Mac Pro for now. Maybe get something to test outlet, ground, and a Kill-A-Watt or something.

Kernel Panic on brand new Mac Pro
It happened afer the Finder freaked out from a search on a large network volume (1,3 TB). Tried to use Apple Remote Desktop to restart the machine, but the startup process stopped with the blue screen and the spinning cog-wheel.
After a forced restart (button on front) I got presented with the dialog saying OS X was restarted unproperly.
The log comes below.
Any ideas?

Help! Got a kernel panic while my 2014 Mac pro was in sleep mode.
I'm having weird issues with my new mac pro while connected to the pegasus2 r4, via thunderbolt. I suspect the issue is related to conflicting power management settings from my pegasus vs the mac pro. Following the advice from pegasus, I turned off the promise utility power management settings. I noticed the external drives would turn on spin up once every hour for one minute while in sleep mode. I assume this is a typical behavior of the "power nap" setting being on. What do you guys think?
Occasionally, while my external drives would spin up in sleep, I'll have a kernel panic that will reboot my computer. Is this due to power nap or the pegasus drives?and here mis my kernel panic log

Kernel panics keep occurring on Mac Pro
Hi guys,
I've been having some difficulties with my Mac Pro recently. It is a Mid 2010 Mac Pro, with an 8-core processor and 8GB of RAM.
I keep getting kernel panics, to which the computer shuts down abruptly and restarts. Unforntunately I need this computer to work badly, because it is my source of income by recording music.
The problem first occurred when I plugged an ethernet cable in and disabled Airport, in order to prevent certain errors from popping up in Pro Tools, the recording software. So since this was the only variable that had changed, I changed it back, but it kept on failing.
In addition, I also repaired the disk permissions on my boot disk once right before it started happening.
I have tried lots of things, such as resetting the SMC, resetting NRAM and PVRAM, replacing directories of my internal disks using DiskWarrior, and also cleaning them up.
I also recall an error I got about my RAM memory not being in the right slots or something like that, right before the problems started... So I just switched them, and that error seems to be ok now. At least the Memory Utility tells me that the cards are in the right place.
And I also did a MemTest, which seemed to be ok as well...
I'll also post the report I got. I can't seem to make anything of it.
In any case, thank you guys in advance!!

If a single-bit error is detected, it is corrected on the fly, and eventually noted in some counters. Most double-bit errors are not correctable and cause the machine to halt on a Machine check, uncorrected error (exactly what you have).
It appears that when valid, the Physical Address will be reported, as well as the data (probably as read). If that is what is being presented, the address is:
IA32_MC8_ADDR(0x422): 0x0000 0001 0d92 d440
data is:
IA32_MC8_MISC(0x423): 0xe163495600000080
That address is more than 4GB (0x0000 0001 0000 0000)±1 and less than 6GB (0x0000 0001 8000 0000)±1, so I would expect it to be in the THIRD 2GB module. The way you have them installed, I think that would be DIMM5. -
Kernel Panics with Brand New Macbook Pro
Hey guys,
I've experience two kernel panics since purchasing my Brand new MBP three days ago. I really just want the problem to end, this is a new piece of equipment, it should function perfectly. At the time of the panic I had a Lacie 1TB USB HD plugged directly into the computer, a 4 port usb hub on which a USB keyboard and thumb drive and mouse were plugged in. I was running Transmission, Safari, iTunes and simplify Media. I opened my system prefs to edit my geektool arrangements and the panic happened.
Here's my system config at the time of the panic:

Both panics have been reported to Apple promptly after they happened. Any help is really appreciated. As I said before, I just really want my computer to work with no issue. The thing's brand new!
Also: since the panic I have moved the usb keyboard from the hub to a port directly on the computer.
Thanks for your help!Remove all the external devices you have connected. If any of the USB peripherals required installing software such as drivers, then you should uninstall the software as well as disconnecting the device to prevent panics. If no kernel panics occur after using the computer this way, then the problem is related to one or more of the peripherals you are using. Based on the panic log information the likely candidates are one or more of the USB devices you are using.

10.6.4 Combo Update - Kernel Panic on 1st Gen Mac Pro with 8GB and ATI 4870
Hi,
I installed the 10.6.4 combo update last night and now my system constantly kernel panics. It was fine with 10.6.3 for months and never kernel panicked.
I have 4 x 2GB FB-Dimms and a ATI 4870 card.
The system is also only showing one display and I can force it to kernel panic by going to system preferences and selecting 'Detect Displays'.
Anyone got any suggestions before I reinstall back to 10.6.3?
Thanks
PaulHey guys. I have got a new Macbook Pro 13" model and I am getting kernel panics. I've been trying to partition the drive for Boot Camp and after I updated yesterday (to 10.6.4) i've been getting the kernel panic sign. Also, when I boot from my Snow Leopard disk to go into Disk Utility to repair the permissions (I opened Onyx and on the SMART check it said the permissions needed to be reset) I get a kernel panic and it crashes! So at the moment i've just backed up my work and I am panicking myself as I have no idea what to do from here.
Any help would be appreciated! -
BRAND NEW Mac Pro won't boot from Leopard DVD, kernel panics!
I just received my brand new Mac Pro today. It's a BTO machine with the upgrade to the NVIDIA 8800GT, a second optical drive and a Mac OS X Server license. The system has Mac OS X server installed on the default 320GB drive. I decided to use the server license as a virtual machine running in Leopard client. So, I installed 2 new 500GB Seagate 7200.11 (Retail) drives in the machine, zeroed them out in prep for installing Leopard client.
At this point, I pop in a freshly-purchased retail copy of the Leopard DVD and restart. When I try to boot from the DVD and install Leopard to one of the new Seagate drives, I get kernel panics - need to restart the machine. Also tried booting from the Mac OS X Server DVD and this too only caused kernel panics. The DVD's read perfectly from within Mac OS X Server and boot from hard disks is flawless.
I spent an hour on the phone with a level 2 tech at Apple - Tried swapping out the RAM and moving around the DIMMS to no avail. I am at a loss to what this could be. Seems to be a hardware issue and the tech thought it was likely a problem with one of the memory risers but couldn't send replacements. Anyone else with a similar issue?
This is my first Mac and it looks like this Mac Pro is going back for an exchange and I'll have to wait yet another 10-12 days for a replacement to arrive. Bummer.
Am I missing something simple here? Does this seem to be a hardware issue?
If anyone has any ideas before I ship this one back, please write!!!New Mac Pros will not install the Leopard retail disc. They will only install the Leopard disc which shipped with them labeled Mac Pro. That has always been true. Macs can only boot the system that ships on DVD in the box that came with them, and newer retail releases. They can never boot from an older retail release than what shipped in the box.

Daily Kernel Panics on new Mac Pro
Hi,
My new Mac Pro recently started having kernel panics a couple of times a day. I haven't been able to determine what I'm doing when the panics happen. Some times it seems iTunes related and there's a long "Checking iTunes Library" once I restart the computer and start iTunes. The log file looks like this:

Brand new Mac Pro - Suddenly iOS devices won't charge
So I've been using my brand new Mac Pro 8-core for about a week now and I've already had 1 force reboot (kernel panic, error 14 page fault) and earlier tonight, when I plugged in my iPhone 4S, its screen didn't turn on as usual after being plugged in... The "charging" icon didn't appear in the phone's menu bar, and neither Xcode nor iTunes recognize the phone as being plugged in. I'm running Snow Leopard with all the latest software updates.
I've tried:
plugging it into other USB ports
using a different USB cable
unplugging and plugging in quickly, repeatedly
charging my iPod touch and my wife's old iPhone 3G - they won't charge either
My "old" Mac Pro that this Mac Pro is replacing had a very similar issue... after leaving the computer on for a while and returning, usb devices wouldn't charge, apps would hang, and i'd have to cold reboot. This got progressively worse over time, and eventually "died" when the system crashed w/ a never-ending beachball and wouldn't boot back up. I'm starting to wonder if I should just return it and get an iMac or something since I have a hunch this is hardware related.
Something also weird is that before I plugged my iPhone in, I was using Xcode and had my phone selected as a build target... even though it wasn't plugged it in. (Normally if it's not plugged in, the name will not appear in the list.) Nothing happened when I tried running my app obviously so I stopped the build, then plugged my phone in. That's when I noticed it wouldn't charge.
THEN it gets even worse... while I was typing this, when trying different USB ports, in the process I unplugged my keyboard. After plugging my keyboard back in, it wouldn't work. Cold reboot.
I'm really hesitant to lug this brand new Mac Pro back to the Apple store just to hear them say "The diagnostic test looks ok to me!" and have the issue crop up again a couple weeks later.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this, or have you seen anything similar with your Mac Pro? Again, I just picked this Mac Pro up last weekend at an Apple store.

I have a new Mac Pro (2014) with latest updates. Any time I use my SSD it randomly restarts itself. Could be doiing anythign as simple as transfering one file or something like multi-track recording audio. The drive is Kingston SSDNOW KC300. (SSD is formated OS Extended) I am using a Apricorn SSD to USB adapter.
Here is the report from the last time it crashed.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Force install 10.4.x on new Mac Pro
I just got a new Mac Pro for our design department, and we're all still on 10.4.
So I insert the 10.4 installer (retail) disc, and the the new mac is saying 10.4 cannot be installed on this machine.
Is there a way around this?
Can I just swap hard drives, or is it a firmware issue?
ThanksIs there a way around this?
No.
Can I just swap hard drives, or is it a firmware issue?
Mac OS X 10.4 doesn't contain the necessary drivers. If you swap hard drives, it either won't be recognized as bootable or will cause a kernel panic at the beginning.

Turning on, new Mac Pro locks have to reset most times
I've got a new Mac Pro with standard 12GB of memory.. have an external drive connected via thunderbolt, two monitors (via Thunderbolt -> VGA) and one on HDMI.
Almost every time I start up from cold I get as far as the login circles.. .and then I get the spinning wheel of death... hold the power switch to force power off and second time it works...
Have tried removing all but one monitor and no external drive but still confounds me....
Any suggestions please where to start (Kit is outside 90 day support time)
Regards,
Adam... err from Hawkhurst...These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful. -
My brand new Mac Pro running Mountain Lion crashes when installing updates or new software.
My brand new Mac Pro running Mountain Lion crashes and re-boots when installing updates or new software. I can only perform these operations while in the safe boot mode. I have reloaded OSX twice. Does not solve the problem. The machine is brand new. It replaced a previous MacPro that would not support the new Mountain Lion. When my new machine came in. I swaped the dirve out of my old unit into the new and ran the new Lion update. The machine has had this aforementioned problem since that time. Also, I had the Legacy version of File Vault running on the old machine/drive, which I also turned off(thinking that was the problem) but that did not fix the problem either.
Here is my panic log entry:

In need of a new Mac Pro, which one?
In the market for a new Mac Pro, mainly for CS5 apps, an ocassional Final Cut project and some Modo rendering (simple work). My Mac is an early 2008 2.8 GHz 8 core with 10 gigs of RAM, rock solid performance and trouble free and I'm looking to buy a new one within the next week. The 4 core 2.8 appeals to me for the lower price, but inclined for the 8 core, is the $1,000 difference between 4 and 8 core woth it? The 4 core has a faster processor, so I would assume that the difference in speed is basically a non-issue for the work I do, am I right? On the other hand, I rather get the 4 core with at least 12 gigs of ram, since most apps don't take advantage of 8 cores.
Need opinions and suggestions and if someone has a link for performance comparisons test between the two, would be appreciated, can't find any.Not everyone, but more than a few, swear by SSD making their Mac run smooth and faster all around.
You are rather low on RAM for any real strong CS5 use.
Your Mac can boot into 64-bit kernel, too. Read up on that on MPG and along with 24GB pays 15% dividends.
And you can take advantage of 5870 or 5770 as well as Quadro 4000 ($789 PNY Quadro for Mac on Amazon, versus $1195 on Apple Store). 5770 + 4000 is $1050 investment.
You 'should' be using say 3 x 2-3TB enterprise version drives. And 120-240GB SSD $600.
Intel 3.2GHz Harpertown (Penryn) 5400s are probably not cost effective and seems the highest MHz you can go.
I go with coffee can, create an account to go towards the next system. Put X-amount aside each month and only buy on cash or your business pays for itself in six months.
The real hard part comes when a new model comes out, knowing the first 3 months are often rough and best to hold off, wait, read the reviews and reports. And know that buying that while today you could 'down grade' to Snow Leopard, the next time you can't and it takes time to optimize all the drivers and software that a workstation is more likely to need.
If you have $3.5K burning a hole, then the ref'd 2.8 and optimize "the heck" out of it, with W3680 and everything else, and then sell yours later too for $1500 probably.

Your 8-core 2,8 is not yet ready to retire! -
Since upgrading to 10.9.4 i've been beset with numerous bugs and general odd system behavior.
Previous to this update I had experience lag when using my Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. For example when doing a preview render in Maya the tablet would become unresponsive and laggy. This never occurred on my old Mac Pro 2008.
I noticed there was an update to the Wacom Drivers (6.3.8-2) so I did the update. After updating I've been experiencing dramatically slow screen redraw. So whenever I drag a window or scroll, the image stutters, flickers and lags as it tries to redraw to keep up with mouse position. This makes it impossible to use the computer.
I uninstalled the Wacom drivers and the lag and redraw errors persist. I looked at Activity Monitor to if it was some other system resource like Spotlight that was momentarily hogging resources. The only thing I notice is that the dreaded "kernel_task" seems to be using a lot of ram (1.46 GB) and cpu time (usually at the top of the list). Also, "com.apple.IconServicesAgent" seems to be using a lot of CPU time (usually #2 in the list).
I'm at a loss as to what to do about this other than re-install everything from scratch. I've read through numerous forum threads about the kernel_task issue but nothing seems to apply to the New Mac Pro.
Hopefully someone has some experience with these issues and some good advice for fixes.
Jonathan

Litlle snitch has been a bad actor for some users.
You do not have any CUDA Hardware, so the CUDA Driver is not needed.
