Kernel panics after upgrading to Mountain Lion

A user's upgraded one of our Mac Minis (latest model) from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and it's completely eff'd the Mac up.  Booting now results in either the grey Apple boot screen and spinning wheel for an age followed by a kernel panic or a self reboot cycle.  It can boot into safe mode where permission and disk verification come up with no issues.  Single User Mode + fsck doesn't find anything untoward either. Are we looking at a re-install?  Any ideas or wisdom appreciated!

  • Kernel panic after updating to Mountain Lion 10.8.2

    Hello people,
I did a software update through ARD to several machines running 10.8.1. The upgrade was performed to 10.8.2. After the update, i restarted the machines ASAP and some of them returned kernel panics at boot time. After the restart from the kernel panic, the machine boots eventually. This happens every time.
    I attached the full log:

SO WHAT GIVES? HOW CAN I FIX THIS?
    THANK YOU

Since I have updated to 10.8.2 I am getting kernel panics. It is the first time, that I get them and I have never ever had problems with my mbp15 (2010 or 11?). It feels like the kernel panics do come more and more often. They just appear out of nothing. Sometimes when I do something with the Finder and sometimes when I use Safari. I add a crash report, maybe you can help me. I just tried to install the combo update, but the result is the same.
    hope you can help me!
    thanks, tom

  • Kernel panics after updating to Mountain Lion

Hello everyone. I'm quite worried because after I updated my Early 2009 Mac Mini I've been experiencing random kernel panics caused by the NVDAResMan kext. My video adapter is the nvidia GeForce 9400. I live in Argentina so taking my Mac to an App Store is sadly not an option. I desperately need a solution because I work with this computer every day. Thank you all in advance!

My MacBookPro6,2 (Mide 2010) is also having a kernel panic with the log pointing to NVDAResMan.  It seams to usually trigger when switching to the discrete graphics (NVIDIA) due to launching google-chrome or Diablo 3.
For the moment I am using gfxCardStatus to force the computer to stay in Intel Integrated HD graphics.  Obviously this isn't good enough for Diablo 3, but does keep it from crashing until Apple can deliver a real fix.
Apple had a very similar problem with the NVIDIA driver in Lion which wasn't fixed until shortly after 10.7.2, so I'm kind of hoping that this is just a simple recurrance and they can put out a fix fairly soon.

  • Has anyone else been experiencing CPU panics after upgrading to Mountain Lion?

Mac Pro, 8 core mid 2010, 32 GB RAM, 6 TB storage
Before upgrading to ML, I ran it in Parallels as a VM with no problems.  However, once I upgraded, I began to get CPU panics.  The core dump doesn't really point to a culprit.  I am using Apple approved RAM, all matched pairs at the same speed and I've not added fiber channel to my system yet.  I am running four to five VM's at a time and, during the time of panics, I was not compiling any code.
I've seen similar threads throughout the forums, so I am thinking that this is an OS level issue with a patch coming out at warp speed but I am curious as to wheither or not anyone has found the "smoking gun", the actual trigger for the panics.

Many thanks to the hatter.  Parallels, it seems is the culprit.  I am going to try to find a workaround but this ***** majorily.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion on my 2011 27" iMac, my Mac occasionally lock-ups.

After upgrading to Mountain Lion on my 2011 27" iMac, my Mac occassionaly locks up while using Safari, Mail or Dreamweaver and I have to d a force-quit, then restart my Mac.  Anybody having similar probelms?
I am thinking about doing a clean install of Mountain Lion.  Would I be able to restore my applications and data from Time Machine after the re-install?

My 24 inch iMac... 2.8 GHZ dual core (Early 2008) is having the same problem.  After it sleeps, I go to use something... and the beachball of death occurs.  This happens multiple times a day... and let me tell you... it is annoying... and I am the one who is being annoyed!
It could possibly be revolving around safari... as that is really the only thing that is running consistently.  I don't use iTunes on this iMac as I have so many other Macs up and running in the house... and I never consume media on it... so I kind of dismiss iTunes being the culprit.
This is majorly affecting my Mac... in terms of reliability and uptime... which coincedently is the main reason why I switched to Mac in 2008.  This is my only Mac that could upgrade to ML... so I don't know how widespread this is... but I hope that this problem can be solved...
I agree with another person who commented on this issue... do we really need a 10.8.1 update already... to fix this?

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I repurchased Garageband and I can't get passed the complete installation. I don't seem to have the "com.apple.garageband.plist" file that has been a common solution. Any suggestions?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I repurchased Garageband and I can't get passed the complete installation. I've read through several posts that all reference the "com.apple.garageband.plist" solution. I don't seem to have the referenced .plist. Any solutions or suggestions?

    Did you upgrade from SnowLeopard?
I can't get passed the complete installation
What exactly is happening? Is GarageBand trying to download over and over again?
all reference the "com.apple.garageband.plist" solution. I don't seem to have the referenced .plist.
The property list stores your preferences, but also the settings from the last run of the application.  If that file is corrupted in some way, you might see third behaviour.
You must have this file, for it will be recreated automatically, if it is missing, or you have a permissions problem with your user library.
Perhaps you did look in he wrong place.
in MacOS 10.7. or later the User Library is hidden. To find the Preferences Files use the Finder's "Go" menu:
Quit GarageBand, if it is running.
Click onto you Desktop to bring the Finder forward.
In the Finder Menu press "Go" and hold down the "option/alt" key, until your user library appears in the drop-down menu
Select "Library" and in the Finder window that opens navigate to the "Prederences" folder; move com.apple.garageband.plist to the Desktop.
Log off and on again (don't skip that step!). Retry GarageBand and see if it GarageBand is now downloading the missing content properly.
If that does not fix the problem, post back and explain in more detail what the download problem is.
Why did you "repurchase" GarageBand? If you already owned GarageBand '11, it should be unnecessary.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot open my File Maker Pro files. Can I use Numbers to open these files?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot open my File Maker Pro files. Can I use Numbers to open these files?

Numbers is a spreadsheet program and FileMaker is a database program, so you probably can't use Numbers to open them unless you had first exported them from FileMaker in a spreadsheet-compatible format.
If you upgraded from 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier and your old copy of FileMaker won't open anymore, it might be a PowerPC application that is not compatible with 10.7 and later. If that is the case, to work with your FileMaker files you should upgrade your copy of FileMaker to the latest version, which seems to be FileMaker 12.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion from Lion, Mail, Safari and note need about five minutes to start.

After upgrading to Mountain Lion from Lion, Mail, Safari and Note need about five minutes to start.
After starting, Mail answers are very very slow. The same for Note. Instead of, sending mails is only a bit slower than before upgrading.
In Safari, I choose Goggle as starting page in Preferences, but at every restart misses that starting page and the search strip says "Seek Google or instert an address".

Well, I found the solution here in another thread.
i just want to mention that the samw thing was happening also for the notes and the reminders apps!! (they quit unexpectedly!!).
So I found the solution here.
    Thank you graphicsluc!!!

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2, I cannot print to my Samsung laser printer ML 2525w?  How can I get this set up to print?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on my iMac, I cannot print to my Samsung B&W Laser printer ML 2525W either by USB or wireless.    Any help on how to setup or reconfigure would be apprecaited.
I either print blank pages or prints one time then goes off line, or spits out a bunch of blank paper, etc.  Have gone through all the standard fixes, reboot, reset , reload driver, etc.

From the link to the Thread you provided, I worked through the one message procedures that were listed.
For ease of reference, I have copied them and printed them below.  This was an old thread but the guidance still works with no firmware upgrade required.
I would stress that you MUST delete any and all files relating to USB connection of the printer to the MAC, including all print drivers (from both Apple and Samsung either from CD or web downloads) and all print queues, etc.  I was only able to get the printer to properly hand shake with my Mac by setting it up wirelessly after all old files were deleted with hard power off reboots on both the Mac and Printer.
I hope that someone from Apple will pass this note along to their programing department because there is some type of incompatibility in the new ML OS and the Samsung ML2525w print dirvers used for a cable (USB) type connection.  Apple needs to be talking to Samsung to get the USB issue resolved.  I am going to post this same message on the Samsung site to see if someone from there will contact Apple to work together on a final solution for USB connectivity.
Here is the steps I followed to get my ML2525w to work in the wireless mode.  Again, I cannot stress the need to clean out all the old files (drivers, print queues, etc. - everything) before setting up wirelessly.
As a note, I ran this printer with Lion for almost 2 years and it always worked fine (both wireless and USB).  From other comments on the thread, users were good with this printer using Lep. and Snow Lep also. - - no issues from either a USB connection or wireless until Mountain Lion.
Before the fix, I was experiencing many of the same issues as described on user chat threads, printer going offline after a print job.  1st page sometimes printing but all the rest of the pages were garbage.  No printing at all. Printer just running a bunch of blank pages out. etc.
I run an iMAC 27" desktop with the ML OS upgrade just installed from Lion.
"I've just installed one of these printers for my parents.
First of all, don't waste your time connecting the ML-2525W as a USB printer. The printer will go offline after each print job. It's hopeless, at least (I assume) until Samsung gets around to publicly releasing a firmware update.
Instead, you have to use the ML-2525W as a wireless printer. In that mode, it works fine.
    This is what I did:
    (1) First, if you have already attempted to install the Samsung driver software from the included CD-ROM, uninstall it. Get the uninstaller from the Samsung support site:
    http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/ML-2525W
Download the "Printer Driver (ver. 4.0)" ZIP file. It unzips to a folder that contains the uninstaller. Likewise, download the "Smart Panel Driver" ZIP file and uninstall the Smart Panel software.
    (2) Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if it is connected. Pull the power plug on the printer and power cycle it.
    (3) Restart your Mac.
    (4) Go to the "Printer Driver (ver. 4.0)" folder that you previously unzipped. Inside it is a folder named "WirelessSetting". Open the folder and run the "Wireless Setting.app".
    (5) The application will ask you to connect the USB cable to the printer. Do so, and the Mac should be able to communicate with the printer to perform the wireless setup.
    (6) The application will show you a list of wireless networks. One of them is the wireless interface in the printer (ad-hoc). You can ignore that unless you intend to use the printer without connecting to another wireless network. In my case, I selected the wireless network in my parents' home (infrastructure) and entered the security passphrase. The application then configured the wireless interface in the ML-2525W to connect to the home network.
    (7) The Wireless Setting application will then tell you to disconnect the USB cable.
    (8) After finishing the Wireless Setting application, go to Word, Textedit, Pages, or Safari, and select a file or page to print. In the print dialog window, you should see the ML-2525W as a "Nearby Printer" (i.e. via Bonjour). Select the ML-2525W, and your Mac will automatically connect to Apple's Software Update and download the latest Samsung driver. If for any reason the Software Update download does not succeed, you can manually download and install the Apple driver using the previously published link in this discussion.
    (9) After that, you should be able to print to the ML-2525W whenever you want, without the printer going offline.
    (10) If you have a USB printer queue still in your Print & Fax Preferences (from your previous unsuccessful attempt to connect via USB), you can delete it. You only need to keep the Bonjour queue.
Obviously YMMV, but in my case this procedure got the printer working reliably without the need for a firmware update."

  • After upgrading to mountain lion, i cannot play any video at all, be it directly off a DVD, or through streaming like youtube, BBC iplayer or even off my iTunes library

after upgrading to mountain lion, i cannot play any video at all, be it directly off a DVD, or through streaming like youtube, BBC iplayer, love film or even directly off my iTunes library. in each case, all i get is a black screen and no error message.

Hi, i had the same problem and tried this,
Somehow iTunes is tied to Safari. Try this:
Someone mentioned to clear all website data and history in safari, stupid but it was either this or the below that fixed it
    or this,
    Disable Wi-Fi Networking Services
Many users have reported that they’ve solved their issues by disabling Wi-Fi Networking under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. This only relates to your location being used for Wi-Fi Networking, so it doesn’t disable Wi-Fi entirely.
Please let me know if it works.

after upgrading to mountain lion i keep getting an error message saying my startup disc is full. it shouldnt be full because there is barely anything on there and i was running windows with bootcamp prior to this with no issues. my computer now freezes and programs close randomly. The usual command for opening windows with bootcamp doesnt work. once in restarted my computer after it froze and it rebooted in windows automatically. i really just want to know if there is a way to take the upgrade off my laptop because it is very annoying.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.

  • After upgrading to mountain lion, contribute cs4 did not open

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I found that Contribute CS4 did not open.  In searching for an answer I found the following on the Adobe forum:
"Earlier versions of Adobe Photoshop (CS3 and CS4) software were also tested with Mountain Lion and there are currently no known issues."
So continuing to search, two days of frustration ensued as I "chatted" with 2 unhelpful Adobe customer support reps, searched unhelpful Apple and Adobe websites and posted my question in various places.  Finally I found that the above statement was completely wrong when I received the following from an Adobe staffer:
Mountain LION is not a supported platform for Adobe Contribute CS4. The supported versions are Latest Adobe Contribute 6.5 and Adobe Contribute CS5.X.
And now I have to spend hundreds in order to maintain my website after upgrading to Mountain Lion.  I don't even know to whom I should take my complaint, Apple or Adobe.  Does this mean I have to research every piece of software I use before upgrading my Mac?  At the very least, Mac owners should be forwarned of platform support failures for major 3rd party producers. I'm doing my bit here.   How about you taking some responsibility?

I just baught a new imac from the apple store and loaded mountain lion when I got home due to the time it would take there.  I then used migration assitant to load CS4 from my mac pro that is using snow lepord.  This worked flawlessly. CS4 and Bridge work great.  I then downloaded the mountain lion upgrade to my wifes mac pro that was also using snow lepord and once mountain lion was instaled it disabled CS4 compleatly.  I will repost the results tomorrow. I believe that I can reinstall CS4 to her mac pro now that she has mountain lion installed using migration assistant from my mac pro since it worked this way with the new imac.  I hope this works because I want to upgrade my mac pro to mountain lion but can't afford to lose CS4.

There have been a few threads about this.  The feature seems to have gone missing in Mountain Lion even though the Help for Preview still mentions it.
I've filed a bug report on it.

  • After upgrading to mountain lion, the movies I create using iDVD periodically stop then resume abruptly when I play them back on my DVD player. Any ideas on correcting this?

After upgrading to mountain lion, the movies/slideshows I create using iDVD playback in a jolting start/stop manner. This didn't happen with the prior os - playbacks were flawless. Any ideas, short of uninstalling mountain lion, on how to correct?

I know this is not much help. IDVD and Mountain Lion are working perfectly for me.  I know many others that use Mountain Lion with iDVD also.
I think your problem lies elsewhere.
