Kernel Panics at Mac Mini Leopard

Hi guys,
I have been experiencing regular kernel panics for the past two weeks and after calling twice Apple i decided to go on with a posting. Here is a briefing of what happened...
I bought the mini with Tiger just before Leopard was released. It had 1gb of RAM but on the spot I asked them to upgrade it with 1 more so in total I have 2 gb now. When Leopard was released -a month later or so -I bought it from apple and did and upgrade. The mac mini was working fine for almost a year but recently it started to crash with the screen going grey and a message saying "you need to restart your computer by holding down the switch on button" in several languages. This is a kernel panic as far as I know.
I decided to go for an archive and install of Leopard but the problem persisted. I then did a clean install (Leopard) but after a few days -and after installing all the programmes I had before- the same again with kernel panics. I run the hardware test -the short one/2mins and the longer one- and everything appeared to be fine. I cleaned the cache and cookies with Onyx and still nothing. I run a software called preferential treatment and checked for system preferences problems. It found some and i deleted them. Of course I run disk utility and repaired permissions several times but again nothing. A guy from Apple told me to re-install Tiger and then upgrade to Leopard but I haven t done that.
Initially I was suspecting Time machine having a corrupted file that would cause the Kernel Panic but the again I should have the problems when I am entering time machine which is not the case.
It looks like that the Mac mini crashes when 5-7 applications are running. I used to work with many applications open but I never had this problem. Can it be a hardware problem?
The kernel panic report is as follows. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Kernel Panics on Mac Mini late 2012

I bought a Mac mini late 2012 this week. Changed the RAM to 2x 4GB. I have restored from a Time Machine Backup of my old Macbook 2006 with 10.6. I got several Kernel Panics during random use. Made the Apple Hardwaretest, it says that everything is ok. resetted the PRAM. Still got the Kernel Panics.
Here is my last LOG file:

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Trying to Diagnose Kernel Panic on Mac Mini

Hey all, I'm running OS 10.8.2 on a mac mini with 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo. It's the last model to have a DVD drive in it. Recently, I partitioned my drive to run BootCamp. The partitioning went fine, but whenever I restart on the mac side, it shuts down super fast, and when it starts up, it says that it forced a shutdown because of a problem. This happens every time I restart. Here is the panic message I get:

I think that this may be a hardware issue, but I'm having trouble spotting it. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

Okay, ran the uninstaller command prompt from the iLok / Pace people and did a restart. It seems that the problem is still there. Before the apple screen, it informed me that it quit due to a problem. Here is the new report:

  • Kernel panic on Mac mini with Airport Extreme 802.11n

After experiencing frequent kernel panic errors I tested the hard drive with Diskwarrior but no errors and ran Norton AntiVirus but no virus. Finally, I reinstalled the OS. The Mac mini worked fine over night but when I reinstalled the Airport Extreme Software in the morning, I experienced multiple kernel panic errors again. So I assume that the Airport Extreme Software plus the updates are not stable yet. Does anbody know how to fix that problem?
    Markus, Munich

    First, Welcome to the discussions.
There are several factors that can cause Kernel Panic's
I would try 2 things for sure.
Disable or UnInstall Norton. There have been some problems reported, however most have been addressed for the newer versions for 10.4
Here is a very detailed FAQ that covers most Operating Systems and the reasons for Kernel Panic's
Sorting out and finding the exact cause can be a little time consuming, take your time and be through.

  • How to run: Mac Mini + Leopard + 1080p ?

Can someone tell me on how to run Mac Mini + Leopard + 1080p? I tried running SwitchRex X 3.7.10 and I was not able to make it work. I read DisplayConfigX may work. Thanks.

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much free RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Mac Mini - Leopard kernel panic

    Hi
I have been having a recurring kernel panic on my Intel Mac mini since upgrading to Leopard. I run my Mac mini as a home server, so after logging in I tend to leave it alone downloading a few things.
However, when I return to it after a few hours it has suffered a kernel panic and asks me to hold down the power button.
Here is the backtrace I get. I would very grateful if someone experienced could give me any idea of what is causing the panic (is it something to do with the airport?). I've submitted the crash report to Apple several times.

I'm curious how you installed Leopard - was it an upgrade install (the default option), an archive and install or an erase and install?
If either of the first two, did the mini show any signs of instability at all before the update to Leopard?
Also, what software is installed on the device, and peripherals connected to it, and while you describe it as being used as a 'home server' exactly what is it that it does?
You could be suffering kernel panics as a result of several things, not least that there is something still on the system from the prior OS that Leopard isn't compatible with and which would have justified an erase and install and a full reinstall of software; that there is software in use which is not fully Leopard compatible; that there is an external device which is causing the problem; that there is an internal hardware problem - typically RAM.

  • Firefox 26 causes kernel panic in Mac OS X 10.6.8 when viewing video

Last December 2013 when viewing the video on this site: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/christmas/10534852/Tracking-Santa-Claus-with-NORAD-5-things-you-should-know.html
a kernel panic happened on my iMac running OS X10.6.8 "Snow Leopard". (1.83 GHz, 2GB RAM)
<nowiki>***</nowiki>This ONLY happened in Firefox 26 and the latest SeaMonkey, not in Chrome or Safari. This was discussed on a Mac Facebook Group, and it doesn't happen with older versions of Firefox, nor later models of Macs. This was brought up by another member of this FB Group, who has the exact same model iMac. I tested the site, and also got the kernel panic. ***
It was concluded that there is an issue with the iMac's graphics card and Gecko. I'm asking as I've had to suffer with Chrome for the past month and REALLY MISS Firefox, and wonder if you all know of this problem and can fix it with a later Firefox? Please?

    Hi.
I am the other guy who initially came across this problem.
I can confirm it only does it in Firefox 26 on 2006 1.83Ghz Core Duo iMac running Snow Leopard. It doesn't do it Chrome or Safari.
I also tried it on my 2009 2Ghz MacBook runningn Snow Leopard and Firefox 26 and it worked fine as well as Mavericks and Firefox 26 on the same Mac.
Reverting back to Firefox 25 has resolved the issue on the iMac.

  • Kernel panics following wakeups using Leopard

I had been encountering routine system crashes (kernel panics) after waking my G5 from sleep mode. In an effort to isolate a possible cause, I changed USB hubs, disconnected external hard drives, and so on. What seems to have been the source (fingers crossed) of the panics was the D-Link DBT-120 Bluetooth dongle (USB). After removing that, I've had no further crashes (again, fingers crossed).
I'm curious if others have experienced the same or similar problems.

    In another post I wrote
I have been in discussions with Apple Support for the last 6 weeks with ongoing kernel panic problems. We narrowed these down to LCC and it's accompanying files. LCC is LOgitech Control Centre which is installed to control the mouse gear wheel etc on the MX Revolution and others.
The Mac does one of two things.
In 10.4.10 and Leopard 10.5.1 the mouse constantly freezes on the screen, the keyboard still works and all apps can be quit and work saved. Checking activity monitor shows the Logitech software in red, all with problems. On logging out, the mac freezes. A forced restart with the poer button is the only way of restarting.
In Leopard 10.5.1 the Mac also constantly has Kernel Panics on wake up from periods of sleep. These can be just 2 minute periods or 2 hour periods, it's random.
If a Mac is woken from sleep and it enters a Kernel Panic, shortly afterwards a the fans rev to full throttle. This could potentially be a risk in a studio with several macs left on sleep for the night. Especially if someone caught the mouse on a Mac on the way out one night....would they get hot revving all night? Logitech should seriously look into this problem as it appears from all our tests that it is definately their software causing the problems.
We have tried upgrading to the latest 2.4 LCC software, still the kernel panics and mouse freezes continue.
If I remove the USB dongle before the computer sleeps it doesn't have kernel panics. However this is not practical and it still doesn't help the freezing issue.
Apple support have been fantastic in helping us with this problem, but the underlying cause lies with Logitech. Once again, we have a fantastic product and amateur software from Logitech.

  • Kernel Panic booting mac os

    Hi all.
First of all, sorry for my English
I'm new here but I'm Apple user since 2007.
After a stupid update (Safari + Java), my macbook rebooted then I get the classic kernel panic screen during booting. I tried to reboot 4/5 times, I tried to use some classic methods (reset PRAM, reset PMU, eject RAM), but the result is the same.
I also tried to boot my linux partition: all OK, ram works well. _Hardware in general works perfectly_.
Then I tried to boot from leopard dvd to reinstall OS and..._Kernel Panic during booting from DVD too_!!
    I'm desperate...
what can I do if i can't reinstall OS? This is absurd!
    Thanks in advance!

If you're not able to boot the machine with the install disk, then remove the RAM modules, put one in, and try again. If moving RAM modules doesn't allow booting, then a trip to your nearest Apple repair station is in order.

  • Constant Kernel Panics after Upgrade to Leopard

Ok, so I have an older G5 tower (circa 2005), and i just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard (i know, way late).
Since the install, I can never fully startup, as I keep getting kernel panics (gray screen restart). I tried starting up from install disk, reparing the disk, and the permissions, everything checks out. then, same problem. unplugged all peripherals.
    please help!!!!

  • Mavericks and Gtx 650 ti, kernel panic on Mac 3.1

    Hello
after installed Mavericks 10.9.4 on my Mac Pro 3.1 (2x2,8 Ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon, 10 Gb Ram + Ati HD 2600 XT + Geoforce Gtx 650 Ti 2 Gb) I get frequent kernel panic. I thought it was a problem with the nvidia web driver so I uninstalled it to use only the Apple default one, but KP continue.

This line in your panic report:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f9e404cb9): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error
Correlates strongly with graphics card failure. The information to determine which card has failed may be present, but I do not have the skill to follow the trail to determine which card is the problem. Perhaps another Reader does.
Based solely on user experience, I would bet that your 2600 is no longer working correctly. If this were mine, I would try removing it to see if the 660 card was showing problems when running by itself. The 660 card can support multiple display with no slowdown.

  • KERNEL PANICS GALORE-MAC PRO EARLY 08

I bought my Mac Pro 6 weeks ago. For five of those weeks my machine has suffered from multiple kernel panics a day. The first week I had the machine I was not connected to the internet, and did not upgrade leopard or any of the applications installed. And there were no kernel panics. I purchased an ASUS USB wireless adaptor and with a ralink driver I was finally online. I did all of the necessary upgrades to 10.5.2, FCP (5.1.4) and all CS3 updates. It was on this day that my life has been somewhat of a living ****. It's even hard for me to write this without turning it into a novelette.
After numerous calls to Apple, a visit to an authorized service provider I have no answers, only choices, or rather poisons. I ran the Apple Hardware test where nothing turned up. I have completed 2 clean installs of Leopard. I have removed the ASUS USB wireless adaptor and ralink driver. The problem persists. If its not the USBWA, then Bridge crashes, or is the cause of a kernel panic.
I have to say that since my last clean install, I haven't upgraded anything but FCP. I'm running 10.5.1 and CS3 as is. I am beyond myself with this issue. It is slowly destroying my professional reputation.
Can anybody attest to these experiences or have any possible solutions.
    Thank you kindly.

Have you swapped out Apple RAM for something else? that would be my first 'medicine' in your case.
Second would be that you are on a dedicated circuit and behind a 1500VA UPS just to keep gremlins at bay. Or cosmic rays.
2GB is barely enough for anything, let alone the type of work you do. 4-8GB (if you get it stable).
Personally, I wish there was an option and not forced into Leopard until I want to, and it has had more than 6 months even.
Trade it back for a refurbished Mac Pro, they do have 2008 models and I actually trust those more than new.
Guess you only got to the forums when you could get online, but there have been lots of problem threads in the last two months. This is the 'weakest' Mac tower in 20 yrs. I would almost have expected this 2 yrs ago, but the initial Mac Pro was as error and problem free as you could ask for.

  • Kernel panic on mac pro using FCP

I am just starting a new job and have been getting extreme speed issues on my computer followed by this recent kernel panic. I am running 4 2 TB G Speeds through eSATA. My computer went down, when I brought it back up Final Cut Pro took 5-10 minutes just to simply open. I wasn't even attempting to open a certain project. Any ideas based on the attached Kernel report? Thanks in advance.

You have several third-party hardware and software system modifications, any or all of which could be contributing to the problem: the second graphics card; the drivers from Matrox, nVidia (CUDA), Avid, HighPoint, and PACE. You can't expect stability in such a configuration. The only way to troubleshoot the problem is to eliminate all that stuff and add it back piecemeal until you find out what combination of elements is causing the problem. That will be a very difficult task.

  • Kernel panic on mac pro while playing Starcraft 2

    Hello all,
recently I had my second kernel panic since I bought my Mac Pro mid 2010 single core at 2.80 ghz, the computer was bought approximately 4 months ago.
The crash occurred while I was playing the game Stacraft 2 with 3 other friends tonight, while I was playing I had the classic black screen and the writing saying I had to reboot the system. After the crash I ran a complete Apple Hardware test and it didn't detect any problem at all.
On a side note my Mac pro has 3 gb of ram installed at the moment and on the same hard drive I made a bootcamp partition to run Windows 7 on it, tough I have still around 500 gb of space left on the hard drive.
Also I have bought recently a wireless Logitech Mouse which I am not completely sure it's 100% compatible with a Mac.
What do you think guys this could be a hardware issue or just some bad data which was written on the hard drive. To be honest I really don't know what to do since with my previous iMac I never experienced such crashes so I am getting a bit worried....  I read also kernel panics could be a sign the machine is partially broken.
Thank you in advance for all the replies.

Ok I had a look at the log you mentioned. From what I see here it seems an issue concerning the video card   but to be honest I am not really sure about it,
Here is the log anyway if you would like to have a look and sorry for the spam:

  • Kernel Panic on Mac Pro 1,1

Hi all, I've searched these boards for some time now, but don't seem to be finding an answer to my questions...
    *The Unit:*
    +MacPro1,1 - Dual-Core Intel Xeon - 2.66 GHz - 4 GB - ROM-version: MP11.005D.B00 - SMC-version (systeem): 1.7f10 – External Hardware: ACD (USB and FW plugged in) Apple non aluminium USB Keyboard and Wacom A5 Wide pen tablet.+
This particular Mac has been in for repairs on the videocard, a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. The symptoms related to that problem are from a different nature, so I don't think the card has gone bad again.
    *The Problem:*
Having kernel panics regularly for some time now (3 last week). I couldn't determine what it was other than broken RAM (I had 6 slots 2*1GB; 4*512MB of original Apple Ram). I tested this RAM using Rember overnight. When I entered the office, the Mac had the grey curtain all over the screen. So this was replaced last monday with 2*2GB Crucial Apple certified RAM. It ran good for 2 and a half days — just got a new Kernel Panic. So... not the RAM, but then what?
The Kernel Panics had all sorts of BSD processes connected to the problem. The last one (which I unfortunately send to Apple before saving it in a txt file) stated Adobe inDesign as the problem. Other panics pointed at window server, wacom driver and so on, I haven't seen a lot of the same processes passing by, it's a different process most of the time.
These are some other Panics I saved, could you please take a look at it and give me an idea of what the problem might be? My Wacom is running the latest driver btw.
