Kernel panics following wakeups using Leopard
I had been encountering routine system crashes (kernel panics) after waking my G5 from sleep mode. In an effort to isolate a possible cause, I changed USB hubs, disconnected external hard drives, and so on. What seems to have been the source (fingers crossed) of the panics was the D-Link DBT-120 Bluetooth dongle (USB). After removing that, I've had no further crashes (again, fingers crossed).
I'm curious if others have experienced the same or similar problems.
In another post I wrote
I have been in discussions with Apple Support for the last 6 weeks with ongoing kernel panic problems. We narrowed these down to LCC and it's accompanying files. LCC is LOgitech Control Centre which is installed to control the mouse gear wheel etc on the MX Revolution and others.
The Mac does one of two things.
In 10.4.10 and Leopard 10.5.1 the mouse constantly freezes on the screen, the keyboard still works and all apps can be quit and work saved. Checking activity monitor shows the Logitech software in red, all with problems. On logging out, the mac freezes. A forced restart with the poer button is the only way of restarting.
In Leopard 10.5.1 the Mac also constantly has Kernel Panics on wake up from periods of sleep. These can be just 2 minute periods or 2 hour periods, it's random.
If a Mac is woken from sleep and it enters a Kernel Panic, shortly afterwards a the fans rev to full throttle. This could potentially be a risk in a studio with several macs left on sleep for the night. Especially if someone caught the mouse on a Mac on the way out one night....would they get hot revving all night? Logitech should seriously look into this problem as it appears from all our tests that it is definately their software causing the problems.
We have tried upgrading to the latest 2.4 LCC software, still the kernel panics and mouse freezes continue.
If I remove the USB dongle before the computer sleeps it doesn't have kernel panics. However this is not practical and it still doesn't help the freezing issue.
Apple support have been fantastic in helping us with this problem, but the underlying cause lies with Logitech. Once again, we have a fantastic product and amateur software from Logitech.

MBP / Firewire - Kernel Panic on wakeup
I guess this issue is reported over and over again by now.
My MBP (late 2007) has a problem with Firewire Audio-Interfaces.
I use a Terratec Phase 24 and Apogee Duet and everytime I put the Computer to sleep it causes a Kernel-Panic on wakeup. I've submitted the report for about 60+ times to apple. Still no fix so far.... And it's a well known issue around the net. Even Apogee and Terratec say that there's a bug in the core FWAudio from Apple.
This is kinda annonying and I think the mac has always been a professional tool for professional sound artists - but this bug makes my MBP useless
Please Apple - Do something about it!
If anyone might have any hints - just shout

Kernel Panics On Startup In Leopard
I have a Powermac G4 dual 1.0 Ghz tower. It has one hard drive with three partitions containing OS 10.5, 10.4, and 9.2 on them.
When I try to start up in 10.5 (which is the default), it kernel panics early in the startup process. There's a whole bunch of text onscreen in front of the apple logo which says something like:
System Failure: cpu=0 code=00000001 (Corrupt stack)
Latest crash info for cpu 0:
Exception state (sv=0x24065c80)
Then a bunch more numbers and so forth. The numbers I've posted above change each time but the structure of the error message is the same.
It also says: Backtrace terminated - frame not mapped or invalid
And at the bottom— BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
I tried booting the same machine into OS 10.4 from a different partition on the same hard drive and it worked without any problems EXCEPT that the system clock had been reset back to 1969 despite the machine having been plugged since the last time I used it. (I reset the clock.)
I also tried putting it into target disk mode and booting the laptop into 10.5 off it. That worked too, although I'm not sure if that means much since the laptop is a Macbook— OS 10.5 is a fat binary, but the Intel laptop wasn't actually using the same system files as the PowerPC desktop.
The very first time I tried to use the Powermac today, it shut down completely at some indeterminate point in the startup process— the kernel panic has occurred on all subsequent attempts to boot it into 10.5 thus far.
Incidentally, I have an eMac which I once booted into OS 10.5 using an external hard drive. It worked once but all subsequent efforts resulted in the same error. I didn't think much of it at the time since that machine didn't officially support OS 10.5 anyway.
Edited to add: I have a third-party USB 2.0 card installed which has caused occasional kernel panics when I use it, but I haven't done anything to the machine since the last time it worked properly.Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Does that boot without panic?
Do you have a 10.5 Install Disc to boot from?
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

Kernel Panics at Mac Mini Leopard
Hi guys,
I have been experiencing regular kernel panics for the past two weeks and after calling twice Apple i decided to go on with a posting. Here is a briefing of what happened...
I bought the mini with Tiger just before Leopard was released. It had 1gb of RAM but on the spot I asked them to upgrade it with 1 more so in total I have 2 gb now. When Leopard was released -a month later or so -I bought it from apple and did and upgrade. The mac mini was working fine for almost a year but recently it started to crash with the screen going grey and a message saying "you need to restart your computer by holding down the switch on button" in several languages. This is a kernel panic as far as I know.
I decided to go for an archive and install of Leopard but the problem persisted. I then did a clean install (Leopard) but after a few days -and after installing all the programmes I had before- the same again with kernel panics. I run the hardware test -the short one/2mins and the longer one- and everything appeared to be fine. I cleaned the cache and cookies with Onyx and still nothing. I run a software called preferential treatment and checked for system preferences problems. It found some and i deleted them. Of course I run disk utility and repaired permissions several times but again nothing. A guy from Apple told me to re-install Tiger and then upgrade to Leopard but I haven t done that.
Initially I was suspecting Time machine having a corrupted file that would cause the Kernel Panic but the again I should have the problems when I am entering time machine which is not the case.
It looks like that the Mac mini crashes when 5-7 applications are running. I used to work with many applications open but I never had this problem. Can it be a hardware problem?
The kernel panic report is as follows. Any help would be appreciated.

Kernel Panic when I use hot corner to put display to sleep (twice)
As the title above says, for the second night in a row, my new iMac (2012) has had a kernel panic when I perform that action. I also turn off my magic mouse to save the batteries but I'm constantly doing both of these actions throughout the day when I know I'm not going to being using my iMac for some time. Both occurences happened on consecutive nights. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Kernel Panic, Restored System Using Time Machine but Problems Still Persis
SOS! Please, please, please help. I'm at a loss here. I have an 300 GB iMac with a 32 GB partition for Windows. I backup to an Iomega UltraMax 500 GB external hard drive. Let me know if more info is needed. I went through the checklists to resolve a kernel panic, and nothing has been working. Here's the background:
I recently encountered a kernel panic (I saw the screen discussed in the "What is a kernel panic?" article). It started when Firefox 3.2 beta was running. It froze and eventually the system froze. I repaired disk permissions, and I was able to boot up, but it took awhile to boot up. Some things weren't right once it was booted; I lost some keyboard functionality, system settings (screen saver, display settings, etc), etc. I attempted to repair the disk (using disk utility while booted from leopard install disc), but it failed (generated an error, said it couldn't repair disk). So I did the next thing and restored the system from Time Machine. Things seemed to be alright.
And about a couple days later, Time Machine starting encountering errors and failed to backup (it failed while attempting to backup 300 MB). The system also started to get slower, and it eventually froze. So I restored again from Time Machine. Seemed to be alright, but again it eventually slowed and started freezing.
I can't retrieve the panic log. I think it was erased with one of my system restores. I went into Time Machine to look for it, and it's nowhere to be found.
So, I tried to repair my disk permissions. That succeeded. But the disk repair failed again. I restored again from Time Machine. Same thing: things seem okay, but Time Machine isn't able to back-up (it's pretty much non-responsive, even after I told it to stop, it just says "stopping"), things are a bit slow and some applications are unstable (Firefox crashed for no apparent reason). I just found this under /Library/Logs/Crash Reporter:

Windows XP ran fine from my other partition at this point. I'm wondering if my Windows partition has something to do with it (I chose FAT32 instead of NTFS file system)?
Please help. Will erasing the drive, reinstalling from the leopard disc (10.5.4), and restoring select applications/folders/files help, instead of from a system restore from Time Machine?
Your help is immensely appreciated! Thanks for responding.
So under the partition tab, I should reformat to one partition, reinstall Leopard, and see what happens from there? Selectively restore applications, music, pictures to my system once it's reinstalled and properly updated? Anything else I may need to do or restore?
Why not reformat under the erase tab, zero out the disk, and reinstall? Any difference?
Just a little worried and unsure is all. If it's a hardware thing, I can accept that and take it in to be serviced. But, if it is a software issue, I don't want to do any irreparable harm during the erase-and-reinstall process. Just want to make sure I get it right.

Kernel Panics (AFPFS) when using airport discs AND user switching!
Ok,
I would love to see if anyone else has had this happen;
I can replicate this on 2 Mac Pro's we use:
We have airports discs (in accounts mode) connected, all works fine. However, IF one user does not log out, and another logs on (user switching) we will invariably get a Kernel Panic after some time (sometimes when putting to sleep or logging on, sometimes 'just'. This has not happened when airport discs are NOT MOUNTED, or befure using them (we are using the latest, just-updated software patch). Any suggestions?
The Panic log (with the memory dump removed) is below:

DanI don't have any solutions, but I had been reading about some folks having airport related kernel panics in the MacBook discussion forum. As a matter of fact, I had a kernel panic a little while back on my MacBook, and the crash log pointed to some issues with airport drivers. Here is what Macfixit says about these drivers and I quote:
"Bad built-in hardware (including hard drives) Repeated kernel panics can be the result of incompatible, damaged or misconfigured built-in hardware. This includes built in AirPort, Bluetooth and other networking hardware, corrupt or damaged hard drives, faulty processors and more. Examine your crash log (as discussed in our tutorial "An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports") for clues as to which device is implicated.
Sometimes the fix is as simple as re-seating built-in hardware. Make sure any PCI, PCI Express, AirPort and other expansion-type hardware is firmly and properly seated in its appropriate port.
In other cases, the fix involves attacking the problem at a driver or kernel extension level. Again, examine your crash reports and look for components specifically linked to certain hardware. For instance, the following Mac OS X components are all used by Apple AirPort hardware, and can be implicated (by crash logs) in kernel panics:
com.apple.driver.AirPortAtheros5424(100.21)
com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.0)
com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.9)
com.apple.iokit.IO80211Family(110.19)
After determining device-specific components, you can try re-installing them -- either by performing an "Archive and Install" of Mac OS X, or downloading and manually placing items."

Kernel Panic when I Use the Internet
My kernel panics any time I try to connect to a page with Firefox, use pacman (I can use pacman for searching native packages and removing them, but I can't update or get new packages), etc.
I can ping websites, and I'm connected to the internet, but I can't really DO anything with the internet without my kernel panicking. I've downgraded my kernel and removed recent packages, but it's still the same thing. I don't get any special dialogue from my kernel panic, it just says "Failed to sync correctly" and freezes.
I installed ibus-mozc to enable japanese input, and this began after rebooting. I can't find anything to suggest that this would have caused it. It worked flawlessly, but I uninstalled it just to be certain (to no avail, as you can guess).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.WonderWoofy wrote:Broadcom? If so, please remember to do a bit of searching/research before posting.
Ack! Yep, I remember noticing my wireless card wasn't supported a few weeks ago. It worked flawlessly for awhile, but I guess my luck's run out. Thanks, sorry! -
Multiple Kernel panics on iMac using OS 10.4.8
Hi, firts let me aplogize for the long post...
In the past week I have experienced 3 kernel panics. not sure why. I could have chalked it up to a sw update had the first one not happen a few hours before the update.
The only thing I know of that could possibly be an issue are my twain scanner drivers from epson as they were only compatible with ppc and not intel. and doublecommand which had some errors so i removed it.
during one of the crashes i was using remote desktop, which didnt really surprise me since its ms, but the last two were while I was using firefox which has had no new updates prior to this happening.
i have read the developers notes on apple for deciphering panics but they are all based on ppc and not intel, so not helpful.
I ran the hw test over an dover for about 2 hrs, nothing wrong there...
I downloaded and ran cocktail and deep cleaned my caches...
Disk util says all is ok... also ran the permissions fix.
below are the panics, they are all exactly the same with the exception that one occurred on the other cpu, any insight would be helpful. the timestamps in the system log that match the panic dont tell me much either, it appears the the tiemstamp om the panic is the actual shutdown/restart time and when i view the system log i see nothing popping out prior to the reboot, aside from a highmem trap and a few timestamps that look out of place.... i prefer troubsleshooting and debugging myself so if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be great!

I basically installed from scratch, then added programs/peripheals one at a time until the KP came back. I am going on over 2 days now with no KP, so I think I may have it narrowed down to some Logitech drivers.
I also swapped out my RAM to eliminate bad RAM... I got KP on both sets of RAM.
My suggestion is to remove all peripheals/drivers/programs that are "non" apple and add them one at a time until the KP comes back. Using stuff that is not Intel compliant could be the issue.
Does anyone know how to turn up debugging or make the console log more robust to collect more data? -
Kernel Panic (iMac) when using Camera Raw (8.2) on CS6
Everytime I process photos on camera raw using my iMac, it hangs, white screens, then restarts on me. At first it I never had this issue until I installed a data recovery software called Disk Drill (I'm not sure if this is really the cause but panics ensued after this was installed). I have uninstalled the software (AppZapped it), but the panics have not stopped.
I checked on photoshop and turned off the OpenGL thinking maybe it was a RAM issue, but Claire (my iMac) still panics.
Please help. I need to get work done before I start losing money.

Continuous Kernel Panic - Unable to use Arch :(
Good evening,
yesterday i tried on my vbox Arch Linux and i was fascinated with his elegance and cleanness.
Today i decided to install it on my physical machine, an HP tx2000 tablet pc with AMD Turion 64 processor, 2GB RAM, NVidia graphic chip.
I downloaded the ...-ftp-x86_64 iso and tried to install it, but i got hang two or three times during the install.
Being in the graphical setup window and unable to switch to another console, i just tried again and after few tries i managed to install the system, but it continued to hang in 5/10 minutes after the boot.
So i tried to download the ...-ftp-i686 iso and to boot it with secure settings like noapic or acpi=off, but i wasn't even able to see again the login screen, because i just keep on receiving a lot of Kernel Panics, like "CPU Context Corrupted", "Machine Check", "Tried to kill INIT", ...
This shouldn't be an hardware problem, because i'm using this pc a lot with Windows Vista and Debian Lenny andthey're both working fine.
Thanks for your assistanceHi there, i'd like to share some considerations on this problem.
Reinstalling the system, i noticed that i could use it nicely passing "noapic" at boot.
Almost everything worked nice in graphical and console mode (vga, wi-fi...) except for some problems with the usb ports and with the automount.
The funny thing is that, when booting the system without noapic parameter, the system works perfectly if i use it in graphical mode, but if i try to switch to one of the consoles from 1 to 6, it usually hangs in 5/10 minutes showing very disomogeneous output (from "swapper tainted" to "tried to kill INIT", from "CPU Context corrupted" to "Machine Check") or sometimes with no output at all, just a blinking tab led.
Now, when i know i have to work in the console, i just pass noapic at boot, and when i know i'll use only X (most of times) i boot without worring at all.
I wonder if there's someone who can make a point out of this, i surely can't, but am however quite happy

Recurring KERNEL PANIC 10.5 using Safari
Hello all, I'm in need of some help.
I am getting a recurring kernel panic whilst using Safari. The panic can occur as often as every 24 hours or once a week. I've not made any hardware changes recently and all software is up to date. I've tried running in safe mode and instead of getting panics, Safari crashes. I've included the latest report.
Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If anyone is able to shed some light on this i'd be ever grateful.

Kernel Panic Followed by Selective Application Crashes
I recently encountered a problem with my 15-inch MacBook Pro that I have not been able to solve. I was attempting to log-in to a university wireless network as a guest (University of Virginia) with the help of local staff. I turned on Aiport, located the network, and connected briefly (4-5 seconds). This was followed by a rapid disconnect/connect fluttering that produced the following series of messages on the system.log:
Mar 3 15:58:00 david-gants-computer mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en1 (FE80:0000:0000:0000:0217:F2FF:FE44:0F44); delaying packets by 5 seconds

etc.....
We tried turning Aiport off, then on, but the same phenomenon occured. At this point I experienced a kernel panic:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001A3135): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 0, Type 14=page fault), registers:

When this happened, I was also running MS Word and two small utilities (Space, for multiple desktops, and smcFanControl). None of these apps had caused problems before.
When I rebooted, things appeared to run smoothly. The OS loads without a hiccup and I can't see any error messages in the system log. However, from this point on I have not been able to load any MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Entourage, etc.), Internet Explorer, or Mozilla/Firefox. They initiate for a few seconds, but then crash. Other apps still load smoothly, including fairly cpu-intensive ones such as Acrobat Professional 6.0 and the oXygen XML editor, as well as the Safari browser. Cold reboots don't make any difference at all.
I suspected Airport might be the problem, but it works fine on all other networks I to which I subsequently connected--only the UVa net continued producing the repeated transition phenonenon.
I also ran memtest with no problems detected.
Has anyone seen a similar problem or have thoughts on how to un-lobotomize my machine?
Thanks in advance.

Good books including Mac OS X Tiger: The Missing Manual and The Little Mac Book: Tiger Edition by Robin Williams (not the actor!). Both these authors have great books regarding Mac OS X and other parts of Mac OS X.
