Kernel Panics & freezing

I just got my imac a few weeks ago and it's been having a lot of kernel panics. Sometimes the computer freezes, but does not show the "you need to restart your computer" dialog. The text in panic.log from the last one is as follows:

It has happened most often during games, such as Halo, Quake III and Wolfenstien, but occasionally happens completely randomly. Please help if possible, I don't really want to drag it to the apple store if i can avoid it.
Edit: The computer has no other problems besides this: no unfixable sleep issues, no excessive fan noise (mostly), no video problems...
Ran through Apple hardware test, no problems found
Went through thexlab.com's guide except for reformatting the drive and reinstalling

Hi Rod,
Yes, I'm turning off Airport at the iMac G5 computer prior to "Restart" and everything's okay.
Yes, I can turn on Airport after restarting and there's no crash and no problem that I see.
Shut-down and cold power-up works fine with Airport on. It's only "Restart" with Airport on that crashes as the system starts to come back up - i.e. gets to the white screen with the Apple logo then I get the four language/reboot your computer message.
I'm pretty sure that the Base Station has the latest base station software. It's a 2nd generation 802.11 11 Mbps Airport base stastion with the WAN and Ethernet ports)
Two iMac G3's running 10.3.x are also using wireless through this base station and they aren't crashing on Restart or anywhere else. The iMac G5 is running the latest 10.4.x.
I'll try the PRAM reset exercise at power up. I'll also try resetting the SMU (what's that?) by disconnecting from the line power for a few minutes.
If there is a Airport HW issue inside the iMac G5 that would be very bad news. This computer is going to college with my son at the end of this week. I really need to resolve this issue quickly.
Thanks,
Steve

  • Mac Pro (early 2008) still experiencing frequent Kernel Panic freezing ... ugh

My early 2008 Mac Pro (2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 24 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM) is still experiencing frequent Kernel Panic freezing.
Some days I can go the whole day without one, other days I will experience many, some while using the computer, some after waking it up, some after restarting from one.... its a mess.
I thought it might be RAM related. So I ran different tests on all the chips, found nothing, no errors reported after overnight looping tests. I added more RAM (I ordered 4 2Gb chips so I'd have a total of 16Gb, they sent me 4Gb cards, so now I have 24Gb. I have heard its best to have all cards of the same size, so I ran it with just the new 4Gb cards giving it 16Gb, it still crashed.) I tested the new ram alone, in 2 card groups, in different configurations on the RAM boards, nada.
Maybe it's the graphics card? But I get no weird graphics artifacts (which I did used to experience with my old iMac before it died).
The fans seem to run normally, not too fast or too loud. Sometimes after repeated crashes I'll open up the computer and blow it out with compressed air. That does seem to help, but not always. It's not real dusty, though there is a fine layer of dust that seems to be stuck/ coat the boards.
In Activity Monitor, the kernel_task hovers at about 1.22 Gb of RAM.
I can not iron down what the problem stems from. Nothing seems to alleviate the crashing, which has become more and more frequent it seems...
Anyone have any suggestions? I have tried using Hardware Test using the original OS disks. I have tried Memtest in Terminal. All to no avail. Nothing turned up any errors. I am not sure what to do next besides call for an Exorcism.
    Please help!

They keep happening. In the time it took to select the latest one, copy and paste it here, and then write this, a dozen more were logged... Is that normal??

  • Random Kernel Panic/Freeze

I have a 1GHz PowerBook G4 17" that would randomly freeze when I installed OS X 10.5 on it about 4 months ago. Looking in Console.app after a crash (which I would have to hold the power button for 7+ seconds to cycle power t o recover), the crash message would point to my AirPort Extreme card. So I figured something was wonky with the driver, and I gave up on 10.5; reverted to 10.4.
Just today I ran across a 1.06 GHz 12" iBook G4 that runs 10.5 just fine. Looking in System Profiler.app shows my AirPort Card's Firmware as: 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18), and theirs: broadcom bcm 43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8). I also discovered through the ioreg program that my card has a IONameMatch of "pci106b,4e", and theirs is "pci14e4,4320".
Can anyone confirm if the AirPort Extreme card is the source of these freezes, and if there is any thing I can do (short of removing the card) to work around the issue (i.e., firmware updates, config settings, rom values, etc)?

Unfortunately you gave up too soon. The thing to have done was to troubleshoot the system to determine the source of the kernel panic/freeze.
You could have removed the airport card temporarily to see if it really was the problem.
My guess would be bad or marginal RAM.
Leopard is extremely "fussy" about RAM and if you have any 3rd party RAM installed, I would guess that that was the issue. RAM that works with Tiger may not work with Leopard, which is far more demanding on RAM.
Only you can answer the question by reinstalling Leopard (cloning Tiger on a bootable external drive so you can use both systems) and making the proper diagnoses.
Regarding your airport card, are you sure the firmware is up-to-date? Did you miss an update?

I've found some other reports of these freezes scattered about the forums, but usually other people come in and post something about unrelated video cards. Since upgrading to Lion I have had many issues with crashes and kernel panics characterized by the following symptoms, listed here in detail so that people can find them when they search:
Pixellation - colored pixels appear in different areas of the screen, in seemingly random bunches.
Mosaics - squares appear redrawn in the wrong part of the screen. Sometimes these squares are large, other times tiny.
Recovery - sometimes the system recovers once it starts doing these. Other times it just keeps going until it freezes/panics.
Kernel Panics - I've only had the "grey screen" appear once or twice. Usually there is a complete system lockup before this can happen, and I have to reboot the system manually.
    Some solutions/attempts to solve:
Turn off Energy Saving - This is horrible for the monitor and can lead to burn-in, but I found that many of my crashes occured when the system was trying to recover from "screen sleep". So now I run a screen saver instead, which doesn't seem to trigger it as much.
Screen Saver - Sometimes I can "refresh" the system by turning on the screen saver and then coming back. Other times, this doesn't work and the pixellation/mosaic remains. Sometimes I can't even initialize the screen saver at all (in which case a total freeze usually occurs right after).
Rebooting - seems to clear things up for a while, but inevitably, the problem resurfaces.
Running Windows - Not really a solution, but I have had absolutely no issues with this behavior while running Windows 7 on this same machine (under Bootcamp).
Downgrading to Snow Leopard - I have not attempted this, but I've read others say that their crashes went away when they did. I would like some more concrete evidence on this if anyone has it.
    My diagnosis so far:
OS X Lion's NVIDIA driver kernel extensions (kexts) seem to be faulty with this GPU. The Windows drivers for this GPU work better on Apple's own hardware than OS X Lion's. Anectodal evidence indicates that Snow Leopard's drivers (at least up to 10.6.3 – more confirmation needed) do not display this issue. I can confirm that this never occurred in Snow Leopard until Lion was released and I upgraded to it.
My request for help and information:
If you are running this GPU (GeForce GT 130) and OS X Lion, please contribute to this thread offering any solutions you may have or, at the very least, listing your hardware and GPU profile.
If you can, post crash logs so that we can compare common issues (NVDA Resman seems to be a huge recurring kext in the crash logs, for instance).
Post screen shots or pictures taken of the pixellation (colored pixels) and mosaic (squares drawn in the wrong place) phenomenon, so we can build a body of evidence regarding this issue. I will continue to update this thread with the same.
I feel Apple has ignored these issues for far too long, and required too many people to simply purchase new computers and new GPUs. If we can build a solid body of evidence regarding this specific issue, it will be a thread that Apple Support can be referred to.

Crashed again, this time while running screen saver. Here's the log:

  • OS/X Lion 10.7.2 kernel panic - freezes & crashes continue

Just using Safari (with a remote session in the background), I had a full kernel panic & crash - the one where it tells you that you have to reset the power. I've a 24" iMac ( early 2009 ) NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512 MB Lion 10.7.2. So it's not just your new system, it's a general Lion problem - it started with 10.7.0, lasted through 10.7.1 and is still with me.
Yesterday I did a safe boot in the hope that resetting everything that way would help (I had about three freezes and crashes yesterday), but no joy.
These are the events in the minute or so before the crash:

Thank you - that all makes sense. It is, indeed, exactly what I did when I upgraded.
I'm also writing this on the machine that crashed a few minutes ago (I posted the crash in another thread). I got back with a 'safe boot' - as I have done a few times before.
I've also de-installed little snitch (and then done a safe-boot & then re-boot ) since that seemed involved. I de-installed Adobe flash, since that seemed to be a problem - I then re-installed the later, apparently fixed, flash. The most recent crashes don't seeme to have a problem with flash any more.
I've posted the various ( generally different ) crashes. I also posted a summary of the similar lines that turn up in most of the crashes.
Unfortuantely, I'm actually trying to use the machine to meet some urgent deadlines and all this is not making it at all easy.
I had had great hopes for 10.7.2 - I thought that the crashes must be pretty common, so would have a common aetiology. There do seem to have been some fundamental changes to the file sytem and to the video interface (that seems to cause problems to brand new iMacs as well as to my 2009 iMac).

  • 17" Intel iMac Kernel Panic, Freezing at Grey Screen and Beeping!

    Hi there,
I have a new 17" Intel iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 250 GB, 1GB Memory with OS X 10.4.8) that keeps getting those "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." messages.
It all started on Sunday when I tried to wake the computer (the computer went on Sleep by itself) and got that message so I restarted the computer but it froze on the grey screen (even before I got the Apple) and it beeped 3 times and then the light on front just kept blinking 3 times. I finally was able to erase and re-install OS X and everything was fine until I left the computer for a while, it went to sleep again, and then the message came back. I restarted and it seems to be fine but I'm worried the beeping and freezing will come back.
The first time this happened, I didn't know enough to "log" the kernel panics but I do know that I deleted a lot of the applications (iWeb, Garage Band, etc.) that I didn't need and fidged with the Share folder in the Users folder. I use a Flash Drive a lot and always left it connected to the keyboard's USB drive. Also leave my iPod Nano connected. After I reinstalled everything, I only deleted the Garage Band demos, installed and deleted the Firefox 2.0 and Opera (wanted to just stick with Firefox 1.0) applications. Only used the Flash Drive a little and haven't connected my iPod on yet. Trying to isolate the problem. I can't remember doing anything else.
Here's the log from the latest kernel panic:

I don't know what this part is about because I don't have a Printer hooked up to the computer.
The only other thing I can think of is I also installed WireTap and StuffIt before the initial crashing. I heard StuffIt was causing problems on some Intel Macs. Also changed a lot of the icons and changed the icon for Preview. I "verified" my hard drive and "verified and repaired the disk permissions" (I'm not that knowledgeable about computers let alone Macs). I also checked my hardware by pressing D while the grey CD OS X was running and get this:
    4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040
usually during the initial testing but when I restart and try it again, it's fine.
Well, that's all I can think of. Any thoughts?
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the reply and links!
After the first problems, I re-seated the RAMs. Does this mean I have to buy new memory? This is a pretty new iMac, bought it in May and have only been using it for maybe two months. Haven't done a whole lot with it but I usually keep a lot of programs open at the same time. I have Adobe CS3 installed too and it says it needs at least 1 GB of memory. I've heard people saying it's best to have as much RAM (this Mac can only take up to 3GB) when using those programs. Maybe it's getting too heavy? Should I only keep one program open at a time? Also, which part of my post indicated that it was memory problems? What the "panic.log" stated or that "4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040" stuff? Anything else I can do to not let this happen again?
    Thanks again!

  • Kernel Panics/Freezing/3 Beeps

I've had my 14" iBook for 3 years now (coming December 8th). I don't have extended warranty.
On Sunday I was using it and it started to kernel panic and freeze constantly. After a few, it would work again for a few hours and then panic a few times and freeze. I ran Apple Hardware test a few times and it said everything was a-ok. Frusterated, I backed up everthing and reformatted and installed Tiger, thinking if it had anything to do with a software problem this would help.
It worked for awhile, but then it started freezing and panicing again last night. Reading these forums, I decided to make sure my AirPort card was seated properly (it was), and then took out my additional 512MB stick of RAM. Now, without the additional RAM installed, it won't even start up, sometimes emitting the startup chime crackly and full of static, and now mostly emitting 3 beeps (no good RAM blocks) with no action of starting up.
So the question I have is: if it can't find any good RAM blocks, does that mean there something wrong with the RAM that is preinstalled and soldered onto the logic board? Does this mean I would have to get the logic board replaced? To have my iBook fixed?
I was mostly thinking of buying a new computer anyways, and if it were to come down to having to get the logic board replaced I would probably just spring for a fancy new iMac .
Any comments or help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sheldon

  • Weekly Crashes, Kernel Panics, Freezes, Reboot, Shut Downs, HELP!

I've posted this problem everywhere but no one seems to care or have anything useful to say, so I'm asking you guys now.
    _My current situation:_
I have a Unibody MacBook Pro 15 inch, 2.53 GHz, 4GB RAM, bought in Late 2008, so it's the first generation of Unibodies.
It came with Leopard and *everything was perfect and wonderful, until I upgraded to Snow Leopard*.
Since then, approximately once or twice a week, I get various problems that involve a hard reset of the computer. This is sometimes a *complete freeze, a spontaneous reboot, a power-off without warning, or a kernel panic*. So sometimes the computer will reboot on its own, sometimes it will power off without rebooting, and sometimes it just freezes requiring me to power it off by holding the power button.
For example, the problem I just had 10 minutes ago can be described as follows:
The mouse suddenly moves a lot faster than usual, and seems to freeze from time to time. The Skype audio conversation I am having still works perfectly fine. I try to click, press exposé, but nothing reacts. The mouse reacts to movement, but moves way too fast. Then, all of a sudden, the last bit of audio from Skype keeps *looping forever*, and everything has frozen, including the mouse. Then the computer goes black and starts to reboot automatically.
This has happened many times before. Often, the computer would start to reboot (totally on its own), I would hear the startup chime, and then it would go black again, and start booting *all over again*.
Sometimes the screensaver just freezes, with random thick grey horizontal lines scanning and flickering across the screen. It won't react to anything, even the Caps Lock key won't light up when pressed.
I have noticed that these problems only seem happen when I am using the *9600M graphics card*. Not when using the 9400M. This is not for sure, as I rarely use the 9400M.
However, before you say it's a graphics card failure, let me just clarify that NONE of this happened on Leopard for a year. Absolutely nothing. Now I don't believe that by coincidence, my graphics card failed for no reason right on the day I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
I have talked with a genius and all he could say that he has no idea and that there's nothing he can do. He said it could be RAM or it could be the graphics card, but that's just based on what I told him. He could take the machine for some time and run tests on it, but I can't live without my computer at the moment, it is crucial for my studies, I'd rather have it crash every 4 days than not have a computer at all for a few days.
_What I have tried so far:_
I have run the basic Apple Hardware Test, I haven't run the Extended one yet.
I used Tech Tool Pro's non-booting interface and it shows no problems.
I repaired permissions more times that the number of atoms in the universe.
I checked the hard drive for errors using Disk Utility, nothing.
I will try reinstalling Snow Leopard if the upcoming 10.6.3 update doesn't solve the problem.
    *Then I will reinstall Leopard.*
Until then, can anyone think of anything that could help? I'm looking for SOFTWARE related issues, not hardware. If my problem is hardware, I'm doomed, as I am out of warranty, and I'm NOT paying any amount of money to fix this as I've only bought this super expensive computer a year and a half ago.
So, please help me. I'm very annoyed. My 8 year old Pentium III with Windows 2000 is more stable than this.

Here are two extracts from the Console.app, both generated during the time of two separate crashes, I would like someone who knows anything about the Console messages to have a look through it and check what's similar in both of them, and maybe point to what may be the cause. I found that each time there's something about "64 bit mode enabled" and also something like "launchd[1] has started up". I don't know what these mean but all I know is that these messages were generated during at least two crashes. The way the last two crashes happened were as follows: the mouse started being over sensitive, as I moved my finger over the trackpad, the pointer moved way too fast compared to normally. I could not click anything, and the rest of the screen was frozen, except for the strange mouse pointer. The Skype conversation in the background was still working fine, except that the person reported not seeing me anymore on the webcam. My green iSight light was still on though. Then the mouse froze and in one case the system rebooted on its own, in another case I had to do it manually.
    Here are the two logs:

  • Arch kernel panic, freezing during boot

Every single thing worked just great, then I burned a CD with Brasero (which I've done before), and right when the CD got ejected everything froze. My music froze, and so did the mouse and my computer didn't listen to any key strokes. Then I noticed that my CAPSLOCK and NUMLOCK leds on my keyboard were blinking. Was it a kernel panic? I don't know.
The only option I had left was to hit the big red reset button.
At boot, GRUB worked just fine, and then a lot of text as usual when Linux checks stuff and such, and after that a black screen with a non blinking cursor up in the left corner of the screen. Instead of that non blinking cursor, I've set gnome to autoload, which it wasn't. So I removed the autoload of gnome so that the usual prompt should appear, but it does not! So right now, I have no idea what to do!
I have checked my partitions with gparted on a live CD and they all seem to be intact.

My Xorg.0.log is empty, so are Xorg.0.log.
But, the other files (Xorg.1.log.old to Xorg.5.log.old), do hold some information, though the info is the same in all of them (except that the numbers to the left differs some):

Now, looking at the end of the file(s), there seem to be a problem with fglrx? And I think it may be my ATI drivers:
I used the "ATI Proprietary Drivers" for my HD4870 graphics card, but after I installed them, dragging windows around and scrolling inside them lagged a**, so I *removed* the driver in a nasty way, somehow... I maybe the problem lies there?

  • Kernel Panics & Freezs

    Hi,
My macpro (early 2009, 2 X Xeon 2.26Ghz) is crashing.
I recently upgraded the RAM from 6 X 1Gig, to 6 X 2Gig, in it worked fine for 4 weeks.
I tested the RAM with Rember, and all is good.

  • Airport Extr. Vers 4 - w/ kernel panic issue?

    Hi All --
hoping someone can shed some light on a kernel panic/Airport issue.
Just received my MBP back from repair shop - with a newly installed Vers. 4 Airport Extreme.
    But its toast.
Airport works for about five minutes and either switches itself off (to blank icon - not greyed) and i need a restart, or the machine goes into kernel panic - freezing the machine & black curtain falling.....
I will be on the blower first thing in the morning, but am curious if anyone here can translate some error/kernel messages??
I can see some sort of driver info coming up but not sure what this means.... except for returning the MBP for another week of reparing......(I have re-set SMC, re-installed 10.5.2 dvd, Updated to 10.5.6, re-installed/downgraded to my old system 10.5.3, but no joy)
thanks in adv. for any info
    John.

  • New iBook, kernel panics when awakened from sleep

I've been going nuts for several weeks now due to issues with my new iBook G4. When it is not plugged in, it may be fine when it wakes from sleep, or else it may wake to a black screen of death or else wake up and then freeze (requiring a restart) a few seconds after waking up.
I've reset the PMU several times, removed the third-party RAM (which I thought resolved the issue, until two crashes today when waking up unplugged), reset the PRAM, ran Disk Utility, did an archive and install of 10.4.2, etc. For a day, it would also go through infinite wake/sleep cycles when plugged in with the lid closed, but it resolved on its own within 24 hours. I was all set to send it in to Apple when the issue resolved itself on its own.
But I'm stumped as to the nature of the kernel panics/freezes, etc. They only happen when the iBook is unplugged from AC, USB, etc. and it is not 100% predictable. It may happen the second time I'm waking it up after not being connected to anything. Or it may be fine.
Here's the panic log from today, the details of which are identical to the panic that happened an hour earlier:

Suggestions? Is this really a hardware issue relating to the AirPort card, or is it something related to kernel extensions? It does not appear to be a user folder-related issue (I tested that as well). Thanks!

I've been having similar problems with my iBook G4/1GHz computer. I haven't yet figured it out when or why it crashes after sleep, but this is sure: everytime there is USB mouse connected, it does that crashing. I bought mighty mouse to make sure, it wasn't the mouse which caused the problems. But no, it wasn't the mouse.
I've tried to google some solutions, but haven't found any. This is very annoying problem. Anyway I can get that crashlog after reboot?
    Symptons:
When lid is opened, fan's are started, but no picture or network connection or anything is alive. Display is black. Requires reboot to get it up and running again.
I have run hardware tests on processor, usb, video ram and ram and all have passed.

  • Memory issues - kernel panics / system freezes with 1Gb Memory Card

I've recently updated my PowerBook OS to 10.4.7 and now more recently 10.4.8.
Prior to this, i had been running a pair of pc2700 memory cards (1x1Gb + 1x 512Mb) bought from crucial technology on 10.3.9 with no problems.
During the upgrade, i experienced complete system lock ups and kernel panics. pulling the 1Gb card resolved the problem.
So i thought it could be duff memory (it happens). I ran hardware checker, both long and short tests, ran memchecker from single user and there was no reported errors although i was still getting crashes.
I returned the memory to crucial and they replaced it and then i went to reinstall memory in the pb.
Once reinstalled, problems re-emerged. Both System profiler and iStat pro show both memory sticks as ok. both are pc2700 DDR.
i tried just the 1 Gb stick in alternate memory slots. with the memory in the lower slot i was getting system freezes, in the top slot i was getting kernel panics.
I've pulled the 1Gb and reverted to 768Mb (512Mb lower (crucial)/ 256MB (apple) upper) and i'm back to normal.
    Now what?
As my mac is getting on, i'd like to get as much RAM in it as i can, ideally the 1.5Gb /2Gb which it can support. I'd be suprised if it could be the memory stick being duff (2 duff in a row?), its not a faulty memory slot as system profiler is showing that its full.
Any suggestions? Anything to do with how 10.4.8 handles the memory addressing?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    PowerBook G4 1Ghz FW800   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've had that problem, too. I found out that it was one of my memory modules that were broken.
I'd say pop back in your other memory module, then get out your PowerBook DVD and stick it in Restart your PowerBook while holding down the Option Key on your keyboard until some buttons start to show up on your screen.
Select the Hardware Test one, then click the Arrow button. It'll boot into a utility and you can run a hardware test that includes checking your memory.
If any of your memory is bad, it'll show up like "**ERROR ERROR**" and give you a code.
After you've identified the hardware problem (hopefully just the RAM), then you can go to Crucial's website and fill out an RMA request to have the memory replaced. I'm pretty sure Crucial has a life-time warranty on their memory products.

  • Cinema display causing freezes and kernel panics?

Okay, if anyone has experienced this before I would like to know. I've been having these powerbook freezes at night., and occasional kernel panics during the day. I usualy leave my computer on all night, but when I check it in the morning it's pretty much froze everyday.
I did a complete clean install, I've ran hardware test, past both tests, reset pram, av-ram. I did install 2 gig of ram (2x1), I was beggining to question the ram, but once I unpluged it from my Cinema display I have not had one freeze in three days. Why would that be? Has anyone else had problems like this?
I've used this display for a year with my previous powerbook and have had no problems, but for some reason these two don't get along. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the usb, or firewire ports. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

You know it does seem to be the memory. Once I replaced the memory with different chips all kernel panics have stopped, same with freezes. Funny how this passed all the memory tests.
All seems to be better now anyway....thanks.

  • One month old macbook pro got hang(freeze) once, and kernel panic once: should i need to take some actions or its ok??

my macbook pro 13.3 (OS XLion 10.7.4) is one month old, few days ago  it got freezed(hanged) at that time only 2 apps were running google chrome and xcode, i pressed power button (hold it for few seconds) to restrat.
Today when i opened the lid(as my mac was on sleep for last one hour- no apps except finder was running) i saw an error like this "mac encountered an error hold your power button for few seconds to restart......blah blah..something in other languages too", i think some where it used the word "kernel panic".
After restart mac said "your computer restarted because of a reason", below i have copy pasted the reason.
Please suggest me its(this behavior is) okie or should i take it to apple center?, also to note i have never played any game on my mac. Can any body suggest me why this kernel panic happened by seeing the reason below.
Now i am afraid to leave my mac at sleep with unsaved data and that was the exact reason i shifted from windows to mac.
