Kernel panics, graphic file corruption with Firewire

I've been having consistent problems with Firewire since I got my Mac Pro last year. I only recently narrowed it down to Firewire so I thought I'd write it up here for the record.
I never actually solved the problem, just started using USB-2 instead and the issues went away.
--I had been getting pretty consistent kernel panics while doing backups or large file transfers to an external FW drive. I tried a few different drives and cables and the panics were consistent.
--I also noticed a strange problem where graphic files I'd backed up (TIFF, JPEG, etc.) would have these single-pixel horizontal streaks running through them. This was a little disconcerting because it wasn't picked up during verification, it was just there when I opened the backup file.
I found lots of people with FW problems in these forums but none mentioned that strange file corruption I got.
I'll try FW again after a future system software upgrade but I'm giving up on it for now.

  • Kernel Panic/Log file: what does it mean?

    Hi,
I got the following Kernel Panic, but can't get a clue of what the log file is telling me. I guess it is related to a motherboard failure, but I'm not sure.
At the time the Kernel panic occured, my iBook wasn't doing much, but running Firefox 2.0.0.16, Airport Extreme and iPhoto 4.0.3. No USB device but a Logitech Mice was connected.
Can anyone help me with reading and understanding this Kernel Panic log.file? Thanks. Fred

    Hi Jon Huber, hi Paul,
Thanks for your answers. They do confirm my worth fears, since I do sometime have to start, pressing the palmrest below the Option-Command keys, or get the Blue Screen of Death. Since Apple has interrupted its Logic Board Replacement Programm, I guess there not much I can do, but to decide if I should buy an new Mac or not. My previous iBook, a G3, also died, slowly but surely, because of a logic board failure.
I'm really found of apple products, but I cannot afford just throwing my money away every two or three years. Sadly, I'm afraid I'll have to change side, and buy a Bill Gates friendly laptop.
    Sad, sad, sad...
    Bye, folks.

  • Lion kernel panic when file sharing

I had several kernel panics today while encoding mpeg, both on OSX 10.7.2 and 10.6.8 (I have both installed in the same machine, but on separate drives in bays 1 and 2).
It only seems to happen when I'm file sharing from our OSX Lion Server 10.7.2. All sharing is done at 1000Mbps over Cat6 Ethernet and has a quality switch to mange it. Ethernet ports on both the server and the encoding station are link aggregated.
The encoding software I'm using is Telestream Episode Pro 6.2.1 and I have verified the node and file paths, everything looks normal. But it crashes when this program's encoding processes are running, so I'm listing it as a culprit.
This workflow has performed perfectly before, so I'm not sure why it's so unstable now.
This is the report I got after rebooting:

I ran the same processes as before, kernel panic after ten mins
Ran other encoding processes, kernel panic again
I'm starting to feel like this is realated to the way my cpu is interacting with our server...
    Any thoughts?

  • Kernel Panic MacPro Early 2008 with Lion 10.7.5

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008) and for the past few months I have been getting regular (but intermittent - like every few days) kernel panics and I thought I should try to get to the bottom of the problem.
I seem to recall that they started happening after a software update for OS X Lion, but perhaps not.
    Here is the report:

Investigate these sofwares (all actually) for updates or uninstall them in a process of elimination.
You also can run through this list of fixes, #8 will clear them out and give a fresh OS X copy if it's corrupted.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Contact the developer if your still having problems despite fixing the software on the computer so they can issue a patch.

  • Aperture Kernel Panics & Fusion Disk Corruptions

We have a  new iMac with the Fusion drive bought not to long ago. It has 16gb memory. Since it's back to school, we are busier than this past summer
We are editing about 200 - 400 images a day. While in Aperture we have had kernel panics and a major spinning ball freezes with a total reboot freeze that ended up with  corruption on the Fusion drive.
We have ask some tech people, and all have said, when working with large raw images, which we do, the drive cannot keep up with editing, esp when using the brush tool. Also missing files sometimes, like magic their gone.
    Anyone else have this.
PS we have swaped out the memory 3 times and still had issues. I don't think the drive can handle the work.

While I am runing a DIY Fusion Drive on a Mac Pro, I am a heavy user of Aperture and have noticed no problems what so ever with my current setup.
It might be helpful if you canpost a crash dump from one of your kernel panics.

  • Kernel panic, can't start with install disc or safe mode

Two days ago my 2008 Mac Pro got a green screen that froze up the entire system. After a few minutes I decided to force power down by holding the power button. Since then I receive a kernel panic every time I boot up in Mac OS.
I run bootcamp and I'm able to boot up Vista 32 bit okay. After the system went down my video card, NVidia 8800GT, was no longer being loaded in Windows due to and error (43). I tried installing old drivers, new drivers, and today I finally bought a new video card, NVidia GTX 285 Mac. The new card works great in Windows, but I'm still unable to load up Mac OS.
I've tried resetting the PRAM. I've also tried booting up off of the 10.5 install disc to try a fresh install, but I get kernel panics even when I do that. I connected the Mac to another Mac using target disc mode and using Verify Disk it detected no errors. I used the Apple Hardware Test and again the Mac detected no problems. I've reseated the RAM in the cpu and disconnected all usb and firewire devices. I've called Apple support and they told me to do all of these things I just mentioned. After all of that I even tried erasing the Mac HD partion of the hard drive thinking that it might erase a problematic file or at least let me do an install on a fresh drive (thankfully I made an exteral backup of all my Mac files when I had it in target disk mode). I'm at a loss of what else to try other than taking it into a mechanic. Has anyone experienced this before or have any ideas?

Your OS X system sounds hosed. However, getting a kernel panic trying to start from an installer disc is usually a good sign of hardware failure. If you aren't using the original installer disc that came with the computer, then that could be a problem - wrong version for the machine. Or the installer disc itself is defective.
If your Boot Camp partition is on a different drive, then I'd suspect the hard drive but you believe it's OK. This could be a problem with RAM. However, I would look for another suitable installer disc you can try that boots the same version of OS X that was installed originally on your machine.

  • File corruption with a very large .ai file

    A little background first:
I am a graphic designer/cartographer with 15+ years of experience. I started making maps in Illustrator with version 6 and have upgraded to every version since.
    My machines:
    2x Mac Pro 8-core 3.0GHz, 16GB RAM, 10.5.7
    Mac Pro quad-core 2.66GHz, 8GB RAM, 10.5.7
    MacBook Pro 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM, 10.5.7
    Illustrator specs:
All machines have CS4 installed as well as Illustrator 10.
The 8-core MPs have the MAPublisher Plug-ins installed
The 4-core and MacBook Pro (MBP) does not have the MAPublisher Plug-ins
The problem I am having can be replicated on each of the machines. The MBP can't handle the file due to RAM. Since this occurs on machines that has MAPublisher installed and a machine that does not, I think we can rule out a plug-in issue.
    File specs:
The original file: version 10, file size (uncompressed, no PDF support, and no font-embedding) is 36.4 MB. There are no raster effects or embedded/placed images. This is strictly a vector file. Artboard Dimensions: 85.288 in x 81.042 in
The original file, converted with CS4, and then saved as a CS4 file: file size (uncompressed, no PDF support, and no font-embedding) is 97.9 MB.
    Brief Description of the problem:
I have tried to convert this file into every version of CS and it has failed every time. With each version, it has resulted in an unusable file for different reasons. CS-CS3, the file was completely unusable because of the opening/saving time. It could take as long as 3 hours to save the file. With CS4, this has been rectified and I once again tried to convert it. Upon re-opening of the 'converted' CS4 native file, the file is 'corrupted'.
The file corruption is not your regular "This file can't be opened because of: X" corruption. The file opens after a save/close just fine. It is just that parts of the file gets destroyed. To save space in this post, I have created a webpage that illustrates the problem that I am having:
    http://newatlas.com/ai_problem/
I have tried everything possible to make the file smaller and it is as slimmed down as I can make it. (Using symbols, styles, etc.) I have also tried to eliminate this as a font problem by replacing every font with an Adobe supplied font, cleared caches, etc. This does not work, so I think we can rule out a font issue. I have also reduced this file to contain no pattern fills, no gradients, and just used simple fills and strokes. All to no avail. I have also tried piecing the file back together into a new document by copying/pasting a layer at a time. Saving, closing and re-opening after each paste cycle. I can get about 95% of it put back together and then it will manifest the problem. The only thing I haven't done is to convert all of the type to outlines. This would not solve my problem since this is a map that I continually work on year after year. I also can't remove objects or cut the overall area of the map because this file is used to produce an atlas book, a wall map and custom boundary wall maps. You can view the entire file at:
    http://okc.cocpub.com
If I do not convert the legacy text, the file saves/closes/re-opens just fine. It just takes a very long time. So this leads me to think that the cause of the problem is the number of editable type objects that this file has. Ever since Adobe changed the Type Engine, I haven't been able to use this file in current versions of Illustrator.
If I could get this file to open, uncorrupted, I could finally get rid of Illustrator 10. Illustrator 10 does not have any problem with this file (and is still faster than CS4 in everything except selecting a lot of objects.)
I am posting this on the forums for any other opinions/ideas from the 'Illustrator Gurus' as a first step. I want to get in contact with someone at Adobe to see if we can address this problem and possibly get it fixed with CS5. I know that this is a user-to-user forum, but I'm not sure who, where and how to contact Adobe for this issue. Maybe someone on these forums can help with that as well.
Thank you for your patience for getting this far in my long post and I would really appreciate any response.
    Dave

    Thanks Wade for responding,
Did you try trashing your Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings folder in your User's Preferences?
Yes, I've tried deleting prefs. Basically I've tried to rule out any problems with Illustrator as a whole. This issue has also occured on a clean install of OS X and Illustrator on a new User Account with the opening of this file being the first task that Illustrator has. There is no problem with Illustrator per se, but I think it is more of a limitation in Illustrator based on the number of type objects.
You could also try saving it out of 10 as a pdf or as postscript and distilling it then open that in ai or place it id a blank AI document.
Did you try to place instead of opening it?
I haven't tried any of these since the resulting file would be utterly unusable. Basically this would create a 'flat' file with 'broken' strings of text (type on a path especially) and type being uneditable. (Now that I think about it, CS4 does a much better job of opening pdfs without breaking type.) I still think this approach is not really a prudent course of action since, as of now, I can continue to maintain this map in Illy 10.
In my experimentation, the results are as follows:
    1. Opening the file without updating the legacy type, saving the file as a new document, closing and then re-opening results in a file you would expect. Every object is where it is supposed to be. Downfall of this method: I absolutely need the type to be editable, especially the 'Street Type' since this type is actually used to create map indexes.
    2. Opening the file with updating the legacy type, saving the file as a new document, closing and then re-opening results in a file that exhibits the exact behavior that has been posted in the thread-starter. This method results in the 'Bruce Gray' type being the duplicated item.
    3. Opening the file without updating the legacy type, then splitting the file into layer groups and saving as separate files. Then opening the resulting CS4 files, updating the legacy type, copy & pasting (with layer structure) into a new document results in a usable file up to a point. I can get about 95% of it put back together and then the problem manifests. I have thought that it might be a "bad" object on one of the layers but I have ruled that out by: a.) All of the resulting sub-files (files that are portions of the larger) exhibit no problems at all. Usually our PS printers find issues that Illy does not and there is no problem in RIPing the sub-files. b.) If I change the paste order, meaning copying & pasting from the top-most layers to the bottom-most layers, vice-versa, and a completely random paste order, different objects (other than the 'Bruce Gray' type) will be duplicated. I've had one of my park screens, a zip code type object and a school district boundary be the duplicated object.
All of these experiments has lead me to believe that the Illustrator Type Engine is the main facilitor. I just don't think it can handle that many individual point type objects. I know CS4 can handle the number of objects, based on the fact that a legacy type (non-updated) file works.
I am almost entirely sure that Illustrator is working exactly as it is supposed to and that the vast majority of Illy users will never run into this issue. This file is by far the largest file that I work on. I would just like to be able to use an Intel native version of CS to continue maintaining this map.
On a side note: About three years ago, I tried working with this file in Freehand MX. Freehand initially would open the Illy file without a problem. I could work on it but when I would save it as a Freehand file, close it and re-open it, I would get your standard File Corruption. It would partially open, give me a corruption dialog, and open the file as a blank document. I alwa ys knew there was a reason to use Illustrator over Freehand for making maps.

  • Kernel Panic -- Graphics chip error! Restarted.

Anyone out there seen ridiculous gfx card/kernel errors with Adobe CS2? My machine runs weird every time that I use Photoshop or Illustrator. Batches don't finish, and I have even been getting kernel panics lately. I would post it to Adobe, but kernel panics and hardware errors fall into Apple's domain. Hardware/Software/OS is fine for all but CS2, including opengl/coreimage/corevideo apps. I have a quad g5 with an nvidia 6800 GT gfx card with dual cinema displays and a wacom tablet. OSX is up-to-date, as is CS2.
Here's a snippet from my rather scary system log for yesterday, when I was attempting to run a batch process in illustrator...my logs are peppered with graphics chip errors every time that I use CS2. Any options other than wait for a new gfx driver from Apple or keep re-running the hardware tests?

Can you link to the parallels thread?
I can reliably reproduce a kernel panic in 10.4.8 by ejecting a volume mounted from a host system (default afp mount) that is either of two macintel systems (mini & mbp).
Problem started when I installed Fusion, went away when I de-installed. Both systems also have Parallels (latest build but one) installed.
The workaround of unloading the networking kexts makes me nervous -- sooner or later I'll forget, and then KABLOOEY!

  • Sync File Corruption with 64-bit Vista/iTunes

I'm getting some file corruption problems when trying to sync my new 16GB iPhone with the latest 64-bit iTunes (7.6.0.29). "yes I have the 64-bit version".
The sync seems to go correctly, but I have yet to be able to play any videos all the way through. Videos purchased from iTunes as well as self encoded files. All said files were working on my 60GB iPod Video with previous versions of iTunes on the same 64-bit Vista machine.
The videos will start playing fine, but will eventually reach a point in the file that was corrupted during transfer, the audio will drop out and the video will distort, then it exits from the video as if it reached the end of the file. No error messages or anything. If I play the file again, it will do the same thing at the exact same spot, so its a problem in the file. Now, if I remove the file and add it back, the file still has the same problem, but in a different location, which means the source is fine, but the copy to the device during the sync is the issue.
To test, I synced the exact same content from my notebook which is 32-bit XP, and zero problems. So I'm currently just using my notebook for syncing at the moment.
Anyone else with 64-bit Vista have a similar issue?

    Hello
I have a couple troubleshooting steps I would like you to try. I myself do not have a 64 bit Vista so I can not test this to confirm if the same issue occurs or not.
    1. Attempt to Sync content using each of the USB Ports. See if all USB Ports pose the same issue with the video. Or if you found when where it does not occur.
    2. Test on a new user on the Vista Machine. If possible take at least one or 2 movies and copy them onto a flash drive or something. And bring them into iTunes on a new user account. You may need to Authorize that user and De-authorize when your done. Does the same issue occur?
    3. If you perform a reboot on the iPhone, Then Sync Data over. Does the same issue occur?
    4. If possible could you restore the iPhone. Then Re-sync and see if same issue occurs.
    5. Is this happening with all videos? or only certain ones? Does the corruption occur at the same time frame every time? If so is it the same time frame for all videos or slightly different?
    6. Perform an Uninstall and Reinstall of iTunes on your system, See if same issue occurs.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Appleworks file corruption with Time Capsule

i've been working on multiple word processing files in appleworks the last couple of days when my time capsule begins to backup. every time i've had files open, they have been corrupted, and would not save. also, in my finder, i find these files labeled as huge strings of numbers and capital letters. i can open them and it's the last version i saved before the time capsule kicked in. (however, it's sort of like a ghost file - -i can see it, but i can't save any new information). now i'm paranoid and saving constantly, in case the time capsule pops up while i'm working! anyone else have this corrupt file problem with their time capsule? (we just got it, and we run leopard)

sorry.. i've been away for awhile..
no, i am talking about files which i have PREVIOUSLY created (say "dog.cwk") and have open, and am in the process of changing data when the time capsule clicks in. when the time capsule goes no while i am working in the file, two things happen. 1) i cannot resave the file, and must rename it to get it to save (so i will now have 2 files, dog.cwk and dog1.cwk) AND at the same time a file is automatically created that is named something like this:MAD321E581167430232-8119 (an actual file name that was created during one of these occurences). so i end up with 3 files: the original, the one i had to create to resave, and a third file that i don't know exists until i go into the hard drive to find out where my original went!
also, if i save again while the time capsule is on, i can save to dog1.cwk, but it might create another file called MAD321E581167430232-8119-1. i've only had this happen once, but it's still weird.
so, i am working on one file and i end up with 3 or 4.. and i can access and work in the original, but can't SAVE any changes.
now i find out it happens in my photoshop files as well - so it looks like a time capsule issue or a hard drive issue, rather than just a single software issue.

  • Kernel Panic at low battery with MacBook bug found - with solution

    Hello All,
I think I've found a bug with Leopard concerning laptops. I started a thread which I'll link to below.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1219413
Other people have had this same issue - I've seen it on a few different posts. Does anyone know the best way to contact Apple regarding this? I don't know how active they are in reading this forum, and I want to make sure they know about this, as it's probably something that can be fixed with an OS update.
To summarize, I'm including a couple of key posts:
    Posted Nov 4th 2007...
    Hello,
I just got one of the new November 07 MacBooks. The machine is great, and screams with the pre-installed Leopard.
First thing I did was plug it in to charge as I started configuring software. Once it was fully charged, I pulled the plug, and began using it on battery. My plan was to calibrate the battery, by running it all the way until it forced a sleep, then shutting down and plugging it in again, as Apple recommends.
Problem is, I never got the "Low Battery" warning, or even the sleep warning. At around 10 minutes of power left, I simply got a kernel panic. A few seconds later, the laptop just switched off.
I plugged in again for a few minutes, then ran it down again to see if I could reproduce the error, and I did get the low battery warning.
The next time the battery ran down, it gave me the kernel panic.
Is this happening to anyone else? Is it a new MacBook problem, or a leopard power management problem? I'm having no other issues at all with the MacBook or Leopard. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Nov 12th, 2007...
Well, It's been a few cycles since the first one, and all is well. I'm getting the low battery warning when it runs low, and no kernel panics (knocking on all available wood). If I start having problems in the future, I'll update this thread, but for now I'm marking it answered. It was probably Leopard not reading the uncalibrated battery correctly.
    Dec, 31st 2007.....
    Hello all,
Short followup here: I've have 30 successful cycles after the first couple of kernel panics, and it's time to calibrate the battery again. I tried to do it yesterday - charged the battery all the way, used the macbook while plugged in for two hours, unplugged the adapter and continued to use it until I got the low battery warning. I shut down everything and let it sit - waiting for it to go to sleep. Instead, I got a kernel panic, and the computer shut down. It would not restart until I plugged it in, but I know there was some battery left, since it panicked at 2% battery. I let it charge for an hour or so, then used it again until I got the low battery warning. This time, it went down to 0%, but panicked and shut down instead of going to sleep.
I'm trying this again, after charging all the way last night, and just leaving it on to drain. I'm at 20% right now, and I'll post to let you know what happened.
    Dec 31st, 2007....
Hello All - I think I've figured this out. Looks like a software bug with Leopard.
I did get another kernel panic just now at 0%, after the low battery warning. But then I had a revelation. In trying to calibrate the battery, I had set my energy saver settings to never sleep under the battery settings - so I could leave the notebook overnight to drain. I gave it a bit of a charge, then set the battery setting (in energy saver) to sleep after 20 minutes. I restarted, used the computer for a while, got the low battery warning, the computer went down to 0%, then went to sleep as it should.
I believe that since I had the computer set to "never" go to sleep, Leopard didn't know how to handle it when the battery ran down, and kernel panicked. Perhaps this happens on new MacBooks, because these settings aren't written yet? Regardless, it's obviously an OS level bug here.
For those having the problem, make sure your battery settings under energy saver are set to allow sleep after a time.

  • Kernel Panic when using Garageband with Blue Snowball USB mic

    *HI ALL,*
*I purchased Mac Pro recently about 3 weeks ago. I am on the latest updates including the recent firmware update. However whenever I use garageband with external USB mic(Blue Snowball) my Kernel Panics and OS freezes and forces me to Power On again. It happened 20 times so far in few hours.*
*I opened garageband first time today after bought this external mic from apple store. I did not use garageband without this mic plugged into USB, I only used garageband with MIC plugged in and in couple of minutes to 5 minutes of using garageband the Kernel Panic occurs. Need your help please. Here is the message I get after login again which I reported consistently to Apple. Any immediate help is appreciated. I use iMove, iPhoto and other apps without any problem. Harddisk verification went o.k.*

I've been getting a number of kernel panics when using USB Mics with Skype, though I have not experienced any crashes when using Garageband.
The crash report cited the AppleUSBAudio driver as the culprit. Here's the set up:
    MacBookPro Core2 2.66 15"
    Mac OS X 10.5.2
Blue Snowflake USB Mic, Blue Snowball USB Mic
    Skype (latest rev - 2.7.0.257)
    AppleUSBAudio.kext version 2.5.6b3
Seems to be a lot of crashiness with USB Audio in 10.5.2 - let's hope we see a patch soon
