Kernel panics- how many is too many?

I use my MBP as my primary computer. It is on approx 12-14 hours a day. I am a heavy Photoshop, Illustrator, Aperture, VMWare user and use some more scientific software in addition to Office Word and Excel. I work in 2 locations and my MBP sleeps with the lid closed when I travel. I shut down every night.
Of late, I have been experiencing 2 kernel panics a week. As a recent OS X convert, I was wondering if this is normal behavior?

Thank you for your responses.
The panic.log from the console doesn't really give much useful information (at least to me). The 'Backtrace' fields, which I assume trace back system events till the panic are different for the different panic events. I am including the relevant lines:
Tue Oct 16 00:47:02 2007

It seems that the panics have been caused by Nvidia drivers and Samba filesystem. A previous panic was caused by the airport card.
I appreciate your thoughts on this issue. I will give disk util a chance to repair what it can. I am planning to install Leopard anyway, so will keep it as ut is till the Leopard update.
Thanks

  • Installing Mavericks cause Kernel Panic and after installing too

    Hi,
I worked with Mountain Lion and all was good, but I thought that would be nice to update to Mavericks.
And I'm not good in Mac OS, so I didn't prepare backup before, because believed that it have to work.
But during installation I got kernel panic several times, yeah. But installation process was continued and finally Mavericks was installed.
    I was happy, but I shouldn't.
From time to time I'm getting kernel panic and I don't know what is reason.
The worst things that I can't rollback to ML, because for some reason Mavericks installing instead.
And I did clean install several times, and did cleaning NVRAM and PRAM, but it all didn't help to me.
I haven't Apple Support in my country, so I can't even come to service center.
And my last hope is your support.
Could you please look on a kernel panic log and say me what is wrong with it?

  • Kernel Panic - How Do I Recover?

I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro and i was recently installing some updates when my computer crashed. I rebooted it and after about 8 seconds of the gray loading screen an error came up. I learned that this was a Kernel Panic, which is most likely the result of the new software i was installing. I can boot up the computer fine, but it goes to the error screen every time, so i was wondering how to resolve this problem. Any advice helps. The error says:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0039C213) : Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI".
    Debugger called: <panic>
Backtrace, Format - Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack)

    Darwin Kernel Version 8.7.1: Wed Jun 7 16:19:56 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.9.72.obj~2/RELEASE_I386
once again, any help would be awesome, as this is not my computer and i dont want to pay for a new one.

    Hi BSchatz,
    Try this.
Reboot holding down the Apple key and S key. Your machine will boot into a black screen and a lot of white text will load. Once the text has stopped loading, type the following:
fsck(space)-fy then hit the return key. Let it run. It will complete the scan and come up with one of two things:
1 Your system has been modified
    2. Your system appears to be OK.
If it comes up with the first, type in the same:
fsck(space)-fy then hit the return key.
This time it should fix the error, and come back with "Your system appears to be okay. If so type:
reboot then hit enter, and your computer will restart, and should do so correctly.
Be sure to keep doing the fsck(space)-fy until your system is okay. Also be sure to have a space between fsck and -fy.

  • Quicksilver G4 wont finish startup - gets kernel panic - how to fix?

Recently acquired a G4 quicksilver - dual core 867Mhz (mirror door) - we managed to get it working for half an hour after we gave it some RAM and a hard drive (it came with none) before it froze. When we tried a restart we got the grey screen and a message which contained lots of Chinese symbols instructing you to power down the computer. Now we only get kernel panics. I've attached a pic of the panic in case any of you can decipher it. What's the next step?

Boot off your Apple Hardware Test Disc , then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Your model would have a separate AHT CD.
Here's the list and downloads for AHT for some G4 models if you don't find yours, some G4s only have it on the Original Install Disc...

  • 10.4.7 caused major kernel panic, how to restore everything again?

I friend of mine just installed the 10.4.7 update via automatic update and her iBook kernel panicked and we couldn't start it up again without the kernel panic screen appearing right after the Apple insignia. So we started from the install disc and ran Disk Utility which said it couldn't repair the damage to 1 volume. So we've just done an archive and install (as she has nothing backed up) and it seems okay now. So now she's back to 10.3.6. What do we do to get everything back as it was? Do we drag and drop everything from the Previous Systems folder? Does she have to reinstall 10.4?
    Mark

She had Tiger running fine until this happened last night, so that's not really the issue. It's how to restore everything as after the archive and install, she can't open iPhoto for instance. Will she have to just reinstall Tiger or can she drag the previous systems folder contents to the relevant places and it'll all be back as before? Will the problem she encountered after the update also have a chance of being there again as it was in the previous system that crashed?

  • Daily, successive kernel panics - how to identify root issue?

A few weeks ago, my computer suffered from some water damage. I sent it to an Apple repair center where most of it was replaced, including the logic board, speakers, discrete GPU, and  I/O board.
After using it for 2 days without issues, I installed OS X 10.9.4. Since then, I have had multiple, successive kernel panics every day. Strangely, these are not easy to reproduce; I can go 12 hours or more without having a problem. Then, in the middle of scrolling in Safari or opening an application like Preview, the graphics will glitch out and the system will crash. After one crash, further crashes can happen within seconds or minutes of a reboot.
Things I've tried with no luck:
    NVRAM reset
    SMC reset
    Apple Hardware Diagnostic
verified the SSD with disk utility + repaired filesystem permissions from recovery mode
    Rember memory test
    memtest86 from a USB stick
tried to induce crashes by stress-testing the discrete GPU
unplug all peripherals (I have a mouse and headphones with an integrated microphone) - still get panics with them disconnected
Initially, I suspected that my Razer mouse drivers were to blame, but I've still been getting panics since removing all of my 3rd-party kernel extensions.
You can see all of my panics here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B6JO6Q_WYjb2TURkU1N5ZWprbTQ&usp=sharing
Lots of them relate to IOkit

I've been talking to Apple support (the nearest genius bar is a ~3 hour trip), and they want me to send in the machine to a repair center. They also implied that their solution might be just to replace the SSD, which seems unlikely to fix the issue. Is there a way to test my processors and graphics cards that is more extensive than the crippled 3 minute Apple Hardware Diagnostic that comes with the machine?
The biggest problem is that the panics are so unpredictable -- there's no way that anyone will actively use the machine for over 12 hours to see if the problem ha been resolved - it's just not cost effective.

  • Kernel Panics-How do you read log and fix problem

Below is the Panic.log for the Kernel Panics I keep having on my iMac: Wed Dec 31 17:00:59 1969

    What does this mean???

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
When the CPU is constantly referred to by kernel panics, and no other part of the machine is, it normally is a RAM or logicboard issue. Sometimes if the RAM or another board is not properly seated, this will happen. Just be certain, dismount, and disconnect all third party peripherals, and see if the issue persists. Make sure your hard drive isn't over 85% full (an arbitrary number), and your data is backed up. If after that is done, you can't seem to stop the kernel panics, run the hardware test disk that came with your machine. If you are missing that disk, contact the person who sold you the machine for the disk, or call AppleCare at the number below:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
You didn't say if you are running an Intel or PowerPC iMac. Running the hardware test from Intel Macs is on this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
Newer PowerPC iMacs on this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287
Older PowerPC iMacs came with their own hardware test CD which is bootable with the startup manager:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
To identify PowerPC versus Intel iMacs, see this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724
If no error appears on hardware test, the problem can still be the RAM. But tell us the status of your backup before you start opening your machine. There are other issues which may be present.

  • Lion gave me a first Kernel panic in years

    Hello,
I hadn't seen a kernel panic in many years
I got one this morning on Lion
What happened, is that my mouse batteries (logitech V470) were going down
so I changed them as I did so many times
Whwn the mouse restarted, with a blue signal looking for connection
Lion gave me a kernel panic
Nothing else was active (as apps) on the computer !!
Hope it is related only to the mouse
    Just don't like kernel panics.....

Then it start "freeze" while surfing in Firefox. And also when i was recording and also playback tracks in Garageband3. I've checked the panic log, but i don't understand what it says. I hope someone can share a light on this matter. Here's the panic log:

Please, if anyone knows what is happening, do let me know! Thanks!

Sorry guys, coz it took me nearly a month before updating the progress of my Sawtooth. A few days after reading the above, the Sawtooth refused to boot-up. And if it does, it will function for a while, then it will freeze, and refused to boot-up again. I've tried nearly everything suggested to remedy the problem, but still there's no luck. I "assumed" the Mac itself is dead so i dismantle everything and decided to save the harddisk, RAM and Sonnet processor for a replacement unit. So, for the next few weeks i've been using a PC/Win machine.
I managed to get my hands on another 2nd hand Sawtooth for less than a $100 a week earlier. Once i got it back home i put in the hardidsks and RAM into this Mac. I've updated the firmware and proceed to put in the Sonnet processor. But... the system refused to boot-up! And if it does, for a while (again!). I switched to its original Processor and it worked fine and stable. But when i replace it with the Sonnet, i have the exact same problem with the older machine! So the problem actually lies with the Sonnet upgrade processor!
I contacted the local distributor and he kindly checked the processor and mentioned it might have overheated (the 7455 chip). He will send it back to the US to get a replacement for me, and at the meantime, he loaned me an 1.8Ghz one (7447 chip?) to use for the moment. I really thank him for that!
What i learn is, try to test any replacement processor on a similar machine before concluding its the machine that failed. I'm lucky that i got another Sawtooth real cheap, and i'm selling off the parts separately. Hopefully, that can cover the cost of the replacement Sawtooth. (I sold off the PSU ysterday, so it will be soon!)

  • All fine and now kernel panic once a week?

After years of never having seen one, I am getting kernel panics about once a week. They seem to occur when I am online. I am running OS 10.6.8 (yes, I know) and have had no problems. I had been running Norton Antivirus (yes, I now know about that too) without incident for a few years but have now removed it. Otherwise nothing has changed except for whenever the last Apple system update was. I am currently up to date, OS not withstanding.
Below is the log for the last panic if anyone is a kernel whisperer:

  • Kernel Panic when I connect USB cable to use Rane Serato SL3

Connect USB cable to use Rane Serato SL3 causes the following kernel panic. Used cable is an 5 meter USB-2 cable. This is 100% reproducable.
Yes yes I know Rane does not officially support Mavericks yet however if I use another (shorter) USB-2 cable with the Rane Serato SL3 it's no problem. I also have an older Rane Serato SL1 and this device works (USB-1) perfect with the same 5 meter USB-2 cable and the same short USB-2 cable.
I've taken the liberty to ask Rane what's going on and no succes there. They just don't seem to know.
So you smart people over here, what's going on?
    Here is the Kernel Panic:

  • Kernel panic when I connect seagate raid

I've updated my OS to 10.9.
Every time I even plug in my 2 drive, 3 TB Seagate for Mac RAID1 the system crashes and comes back up with (what appears to be) a kernel panic.
    Any insights?

Most likely, one of these is the culprit.

  • Help diagnosing kernel panics? 10.6.8 related

    Hello,
have been having this problem since i first tried to install 10.6 a few years ago.
thought it might be an issue relating to hp scanning driver .kext.
    thought it might be RAM.
    ram tests fine.
removed everything related to hp, which might relate to the hp scanning driver issue.
thought it might be a faulty SL install disk, but worked out ok on a macbook.
it seems only to happen with 10.6 and up, as i get the same problem when i installed 10.7 and 10.8 on other harddrives.
10.5.8 worked fine, with no problems or kernel panics in all the years it has been running.
if you have some insight that might help, i would appreciate it.
    thank you.

  • 12 hour kernel panic, resolved with option key, but why?

i have no idea why my ppc G5 failed to start this morning.
booted up last night at 10:30, read mail, went to see new video from "within temptation" emailed to me from student - also went to their website and to the site of 'nightwish"
listened to 2 samples and then went to watch 24.
shut down computer about 2am, having forgotten it was on.
it is scheduled to autoboot at 6:16am with itunes playing as my alarm.
this morning it did not complete booting before kernal panic. it would not boot
ran diskwarrior 4.1, it found 33% out of order and fixed most - still are some problems with SUID files, that i understand may not be problems, just un-updated database files. it went into kernal panic when i tried to check my other 500gig seagate drive (i have 2 internal drives) that is home to timemachine and DVD movies (250gig of each). inserted leopard disc, ran permissions and several were corrected, some would not be repaired. verified both discs - both are good.
from apple site (run from my macbook) shut down booted with 'X' pressed - no go.
then booted with 'option' key pressed, selected my hard disc and everything booted normally.....why?
as a 10yr apple user, if you can tell me why this happened &/or how i can avoid it in the future i'd really appreciate it
    thankyou

I have no idea what could have caused the kernel panic, how to read a back-trace, or why the problem may have corrected itself after an option-key reboot.
However, in an unrelated topic, this statement raises some concerns:
..."ran diskwarrior 4.1, it found 33% out of order and fixed most - still are some problems with SUID files, that i understand may not be problems"...
I have never used "DiskWarrior" so am not familiar with details of the versions, but if permissions were repaired while booted from the "Disk Warrior" disk (which I assume was done since the system was described as unbootable from the drive) and if the OS contained on that disk was 10.4, and if the system on the hard drive was upgraded to 10.5 from an earlier version, then it is likely that "DiskWarrior" has reset the system's permissions to 10.4 values, which are incompatible with 10.5.
Furthermore, if the SUID messages appeared as a result of such an action, "repair permissions" in 10.5 will not repair them, and the messages do not fall into the category of those that should be ignored, potentially indicating that the system is in a state with security issues. Those familiar with the command line may be able to manually correct the permissions, but otherwise, an "archive and install" is likely the only recourse.
    from:
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html
..."Note: If you have used any utility to repair permissions of a Leopard startup disk while started from Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier, Alsoft recommends that you perform an upgrade install of Leopard over your existing Leopard install. This will restore any changed permissions to their original values without altering your data."...
