Kernel panics on LaCie external drive with Mac Mini

Hi there.
I recently purchased a LaCie external drive to use with my Mini. My intent was to boot from the LaCie drive and use the Mini for backup. Everything was working well until I upgraded the LaCie drive to 10.4.6. I started to get a kernel panic once a day. I reinstalled the OS (I have disks up to the 10.4) but held off doing software upgrades so I could try to isolate the cause of the kernel panic. I couldn't. I currently get the panic notice every few minutes, regardless of the version.
I am planning on taking both drives to the Mac store on Monday, but am wondering what my options are. Is it okay to use the LaCie drive as my start-up or should I get a bigger drive installed in the Mini and use the Mini as my start-up instead?
Is there any chance I can solve this kernel panic problem on my own? Reinstalling, running disk utilities, etc hasn't helped.
Thanks for any insight you can provide.
Barb
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   40 gig Mini plus 250 gig LaCie external

ok first off how big of external drive
the reason i ask is this
on some external inclosures designed for the mac mini exceed 120 gig to 220 gigs you will have some major issues one is kernal panic one is the mac os x desktop becomes unstable and certain applications will crash like utilitys and even system preferences
and your dvd software will also have trouble playing dvds
i ran into this on a g3 tower and the same thing happens on certain models of laptops but i have never heard of this happening on a mac mini this is a first

  • Booting Win XP (external drive) with Mac Mini 2009

    Hello,
I have an external drive loaded with Win XP (from my broken laptop) and I would like to find out if I can boot and use the Win XP with my Mac mini 2009.
    Many thanks.

It is not possible to boot any Windows OS from an external drive. MS in
their infinite wisdom has decided that Windows can only be booted
    from an internal hard drive.

  • How can i access my lacie external drive with os mountain lion

I have just upgradet my macbook pro from snow leopard to mountain lion, and now i can't restore my backed up files from my Lacie external drive.
When i try to connect to it through time machine or migration assistant i get the message:
"the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported"
I have tried to enable all UAMs but i still can't connect.
I have browsed after other similar situations, but i can't seem to find any though i'm hardly the only one with this problem.

If the backup was made using time machine, you should be able to access any files you need or want manually using the finder. It may not be pretty, but it should work. I don't know why the migration assistant would be unable to access it though.
If you can't access the contents of the backup with the finder, then I would say your problem is a bit more serious.

  • How to use seagate external drive with Mac

i have just purchased a SEAGATE EXPANSION EXTERNAL DRIVE, USB 3.0...can i use it with my Mac OXS....10.7.4....

No trouble for a few minutes, then I have to go out.
Re 'Too much detail'   When you ask a question such as the one we are working on, suitable detail would be ...
I have an (Apple item, iMac,model etc) running on (OS X 10.7.4).   I have just purchased a Seagate (size, model etc) external drive and would like to use it for (list uses).   Then ask specific questions.
If I can make this observation.    You appear to have gone out and bought a Seagate drive from somewhere without knowing what it will be used for.   They are not cheap.
It may be worth while to go and talk to whoever sold it to you and ask how you can best use it to meet your needs ... or if they will advise you how to set it up.
    Most decent shops will oblige.
But if it was an on-line purchase then my original suggestion of talking to Seagate is probably the best line to take.
Hope you find all this helpful.

  • HT201250 Backup using lacie external drive with time machine

Hi, I recently backed up my macbook with a lacie external hard drive using time machine.  However, when i try to open my photos, which says there is 11.67GB there, nothing happens.  It only opens an empty file.  After my backup i deleted the photos from my laptop, after all i was trying to clear disc space on my macbook.  Can i resolve this or can i open the file in a different way?  Help

One should always confirm copied stuff is where they think it is before deleting the original stuff. See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

  • Issues with external drive on Mac Mini / Lion

I'm using an external SATA drive in a Newer Technologies Voyager dock (which I like to call the "toaster") with a brand new Mac Mini i5 2.3G via FW800.
The drive was formatted using Disk Utility on a G4 running Tiger (10.4.11)
With the drive mounted, the Mini's performance seems to slow down, and it randomly dismounts the drive, with the usual warning, "you disconnected your drive without dismounting it first, bla bla...)
I think I remember when Leopard was new, there was a firmware issue that had to be dealt with, and when moving drives from OS 9 to X and back to 9, I lost access to the data on the drive.
I'm also aware of the partitioning scheme difference when formatting drives for use on the Intel machines.
Could either of the above have anything to do with the problem I'm having here?

I'm not an expert in this, but as far as I know, GUID only comes into play if you want to boot from it, but...... you never know, it could - here is an excerpt from Disk Utility:
If you’ll be using the disk only with Mac computers, choose GUID Partition Table.
Another thought is: how old is that drive? All hard drives fail sooner or later - have you tried to check it with Disk Utility or something like Disk Warrior?

  • External drive to Mac mini

do u recommend to buy a Time Capsule then?
a TC is basically a wireless router with a built-in HD. it is primarily used as a destination for Time Machine (TM) backups.
storing your precious media files on a TC is IMO risky. first of all, it will be difficult to back up whatever you store there - you cannot use TM. secondly, if the TC needs to be replaced, it will be difficult to retrieve the data from it.
it wont work if its more than a 4g
that's a limitation for FAT32 formatted drives. NTFS formatted drives can handle bigger files.
it seems you would be willing to dish out some $$ for a new drive. in that case, i recommend buying a firewire drive (get as big a drive as you can afford in order to be more or less future proof), format the drive for Mac (HFS+) and copy your content from the old drive to it. use the old drive as a backup.
many users here recommend the drives provided by [OWC_|http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400USB] or [LaCie|http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11156].
if you're willing to spend even more, buy a refurbished [_*AirPort Extreme*_|http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC340LL/A?mco=MTc4MzI5NzM] and connect the new drive to its USB port. that way you can share your media files wirelessly over your network.

  • External drive for Mac Mini !

Does  the new Mac mini work with any other third party external Drives? Or must it by all means be a MacBook Air external drive?

  • How to run external drives w/ mac mini

Hi, I recently bought a mac mini and I have two external hard drives hooked up to it. One for time machine and the other for photos.
When I looked up this topic and did a search I found conflicting answers but I know so little about this...maybe I just don't understand.
Here is the question: should I leave the external hard drives hooked up 24/7 even through restart etc... or am I supposed to unplug them? Unplugging seems like it defeats the purpose of time machine. On the other hand I don't want to ruin any equipment. What is the standard practice?
    Thanks.

I'll vouch for the 'get hot'. As in play a dvd for an hour and then take it out hot. Who needs a heater unit with multiple drives going?
I generally set the Time Machine to OFF and leave it there. Just before and after I add or subtract something significant, I hit Command key and the dock's Time Machine Icon together and choose the backup now function. Now I have a record of Before and After the event. (I also keep a physical log book of what events were changed day/time so if I need to turn the clock back to a specific event I know where to go rather than hunt and peck.)
ps. the less you let Time Machine make a backup any time IT feels like it, the longer your MB space will last.
Also, if you can keep your Time Machine backups and other storage saves to just before you are shutting down your system anyway, you can just turn off the drives after the computer is shut down. I learned to do this because my firewire Western Digital MY BOOK drive would only go to sleep mode otherwise even with the computer off.

  • Use macbook pro optical drive with mac mini

Just received my new mac mini. Wonderful.
I would like to keep my old 2006 Macbook Pro 2,2 and use it as a DVD drive. It is running 10.7.5.
Would you please give me some advice and pointers?
Also, I have a few files on the old MBpro I would like to transfer to the Mac Mini. What's the best way?
Finally, what else could I do with the old machine? It was a fine computer, and it feels sad being underused.
    Thanks,
    K.

    Amazing.
It took just a few minutes to find answers to my questions. Congratulations for such a user friendly OS.
I just had to connect everything and open the finder on my mac mini.
So, here is what I found:
    - "Remote Disc" is the name of the feature to share the optical drive
    - not every type of disc is supported though. Why? How can I watch a DVD on my 27'' display?
    - the MBP files show up in the finder, i can transfer them
    - using "share c=screen" I can see my MBP screen. Should I use that feature to watch a DVD on the 27'' display?

  • Creating external drive with mac/Virtual PC and ex-wintel drive!!

OK, I hope I can make this as clear as possible to get some assistance, as it's not too clear in my head!!
I'm a long-ish time mac user, my girlfriend not. Her wintel machine has recently hit some problems (looks like fried motherboard) and it's a grand opportunity for her to get going with a mac. She has a lot of word docs/pdfs etc on the HD from the wintel machine (PhD reseracher). If I put that (20GB seagate) drive in a USB/firewire enclosure will I be able to access the relevant files (using virtual pc-do I need to use that?) to connect and get them onto a mac????
Any help much, much, much appreciated!
    Best

Easing reluctant PC users into our much better way of life is a technically easy endeaver. The largest obstacle, however, is the PC user, themselves. It's unnerving for them to see this wildly different user interface and think that their PDFs, Docs, email, bookmarks and more can move to the mac just like they can.
If you're talking about taking the Hard Drive out of your girlfriend's PC because the rest of the PC's hardware is funky, I understand that (although buying a fresh HD down the line would be good, since the old one has seen significant non-OSX wear and tear). But if the PC boots fine but merely is sluggish and crippled, you can have her NEW MAC(!!!) network to the PC for the great file migration. Just her knowing that the files are the same and came from a computer she is familiar with could help turn the trauma into the eye-opening experience she deserves.
I'm close to certain that OSX will be able to connect to and read the file structure of an external Firewire device without Virtual PC.
    Good luck and have fun.

  • HT3275 Lacie external drive/Time Machine errors

I am using Lacie external drive with Time Machine and now have an "invalid node structure." Wants me to back up and restore...again. I have had problems in the past and have restored twice so far.  Other problems include "Incorrect number of thread records" and "Invalid directory item count." Why does this keep happening? Is it normal to keep restoring your external hard drive? Where else should I back up my hard drive?

    Terriodo wrote:
I wonder if this is a problem with Time Machine or my external hard drive.
Hard to tell, unfortunately.  As posted earlier, that can be caused by lots of things.
Our Lacie hard drive is backing up everything that is on our computer. Meaning there isn't anything getting backed up that has been deleted. But it is annoying to erase the darn thing every couple of weeks and load it all on again.
My advice would be to get another drive.  Since you have a desktop Mac, get a desktop drive, with it's own power supply.  Plug it (and your Mac) into a same good-quality surge suppressor;  or, better, U.P.S. (battery backup) system.
It's always prudent to keep secondary backups.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for an explanation and some suggestions.
That recommends using a different app, but in your situation, you might want to use both drives with Time Machine temporarily; you'll have to switch back and forth manually via the TM Preferences panel (Mountain Lion allows multiple destinations, but Snow Leopard doesn't).  If the new drive works fine, but the old one doesn't, that will implicate the LaCie, or it's connections, etc.
If you determine it's ok, then use one (probably the desktop) with Time Machine, and the Rugged with another app.  Consider taking it off-site, as mentioned in #27.
If it's not ok, replace it.
I am running 10.6.8 and have Lacie 1T Rugged external hard drive connected by firewire on my Mac desktop.
I have a smaller version of that drive, as do several folks here.  It gets good reviews, but like any drive, won't last forever.  If it's over about 3 years old, it could be starting to develop a problem.

  • Fix for Mavericks compatibility with Lacie external drives yet?

My last attempt to upgrade to Mavericks caused my 2 Lacie external drives to become unrecognisable to my mac. Update hung up too so I lost everything...luckily I had a third back up with CCC that saved me. Im just wondering if there is a fix for this now. I got no information or help from Lacie.

Exactly the same here. Installed Mavericks and La Cie no longer shows in Finder and Time Machine reminds me that no back up has taken place. As an iMac newbie where do I go from here. In my Win PC days I always backed up to an external HD on a scheduled basis without this sort of problem.
