Kernel panics, other weirdness.
I think my early 2008 Mac Pro may be on its last legs. I've had a couple of kernel panics in the last few days for no obvious reason. Today I booted it up and got a kernel panic immediately. Rebooted in Safe Mode and it worked fine. Rebooted from the install CD and tried Repair Disk, which told me the boot drive is OK. I disconnected my TIme Machine external drive and tried to restart (from my boot drive) and this time the screen just went dark and the power light started flashing. Any ideas? I have no other peripherals connected aside from the basic ones. I know Disk Utility doesn't detect every problem, but it feels like a hardware issue to me, especially since the Mac refused to restart even before any software had loaded.
Thanks. I appreciate any help you can give me. I was starting up from another drive and it worked fine for a couple of days, but now the problem is back, computer is rebooting every few minutes.

Kernel Panics - but weird ones...
Hi,
Bought a brand new iBook g4 (running tiger) end of June. To be honest it's been weird from the start - despite having twice the amount of RAM it is much slower than my old one, and it tends to struggle with having more than a couple of programs open - something i'm not accustomed to with a mac!
Anyway, it's started with the kernel panics - had about 5 before i gave up with the thing. What was weird was that the message screen didn't come up properly - you got the first line about needing to turn off computer then the rest of the box is all disrupted, like the monitor has broken down within the confines of the box. Then it takes a few tries before computer will start again without freezing.
Tried talking to apple support on phone, no offence but they weren't helpful - guy tried to blame it on my startup items(??) which extend to Mail and iTunes. Again, with old ibook i had loads of startups with no probs. And it wasn't when starting up the kernel panics happened anyway.
So i decide to figure it out myself, and run the apple hardware test from cd. No failures first time, but i know for intermittent ram errors etc you need to loop it. Computer then crashes (just freezes, no message) every second or third time i run the test.
Will try and check the panic log when I get home for code... though prospects of getting computer to start up and work for that long depress me...
Anything I should do / check before taking it into apple store regent street? Am really depressed as my old ibook was worry free (until it got dropped and broken) and the replacement, despite being higher spec, is just not givin me that mac lurve...Have a look at Dr Smoke's website for troubleshooting tips.

PowerMac G4 1.42 Dual - Kernel Panics and other issues
Hi,
I have a PowerMac G4 1.42ghz that has a number of problems.
Firstly, it kernel panics somewhat frequently. Not consistently on one app, but completely randomly. For example, I came home one day to find that it had woken from sleep and had a kernel panic message over my screensaver. It mostly kernel panics while using it though.
It also does something weird where it logs itself out randomly. The screen goes blue and returns me to the login window. Sometimes I can log back in, other times not. This happens on both network and local accounts.
I also noticed that in System Profiler that my L3 cache is failed. but I figure it should be able to operate without it.
Oh, and 2 of my RAM slots cause the computer to boot with Open Firmware errors.
Things I've tried:
Reset PRAM/PMU. No change.
Installed 10.5 on another hard drive. No change.
Swapped out videocard for a PCI one. No change.
Swapped out RAM with known good RAM. No change.
Installed 10.4. Haven't had the logout issue, but have had apps crash and kernel panics.
I'm pretty sure my problems are either motherboard or CPU related. I just want to know which one to try replacing first. The only external devices I have connected are my Aluminum keyboard and mighty mouse. I occasionally plug in my iPod touch.
Here's three kernel panics.

Kernel Panics and other errors
Ok here's the deal. I was having a lot of problems with my MacBook Pro and reinstalling Leopard did nothing to help, so I took it to the Apple store near me and checked it in. A couple of weeks later I got it back with a new logic board, new hard drive, and new hard drive cable. Since then I've been having kernel panics every now and then. The only time it happens regularly is when I try to do a directory repair with DiskWarrior on my external Firewire drive running 10.5.3.
The FW drive's panic log refers to a simple lock deadlock detection caused by com.alsoft.Preview. A Safe Boot fixes the issue, which would point to a conflicting kext or login item or something like that. What I can't figure out is why it worked perfectly before my laptop was repaired, and now consistently causes a kernel panic whenever I run it. Nothing on the external drive has changed since then, so I'd have to assume the hardware change would be the problem. But then why would a Safe Boot solve the problem? Maybe a driver or something that isn't being loaded in Safe Mode but normally is encountering an error due to bad hardware?
I also have two other panic logs from my internal hard drive. The first is a kernel trap, also caused by com.alsoft.Preview. I'm not sure why it was stored on the internal hard drive's Logs folder since I only run DiskWarrior from my FW drive (it's not even installed on the internal drive), but I digress. The other panic was caused by an "IOGMD: not wired for the IODMACommand" error. Apparently the error had to do with a few USB-related drivers and IOKits, namely IOUSBMassStorageClass, AppleUSBEHCI, and IOUSBFamily. I've been having some weird issues with my USB flash drive lately, mostly file transfers going incredibly slow (like 300 KB/sec slow). I haven't been having these issues on any other computer, and I've even verified the flash drive with Disk Utility, so I would have to say the problem is with the Mac and not the drive itself.
Now for the other errors. I've been getting Disk Too Slow errors in GarageBand when recording guitar tracks (which I've never gotten before), and there's a lot of background noise when recording that wasn't there before the repair. Before I could connect the audio output on the amp to the line in on my laptop using a 1/4" to 3.5 mm cable, and everything sounded pretty clean. Now the sound is distorted and there's a lot of static during silence. The only way to get it sound somewhat decent is to play around with the gate and compression settings.
I'm also having occasional issues ejecting drives and virtual drives, Spotlight tries to index drives that are added to the exception list in System Preferences, and weird random errors showing up in Console related to Finder, Dock, certain apps, and fseventd (the fseventd errors are usually about my flash drive). I'm leaning toward a bad logic board, even though that was just replaced. I just did an Erase and Install a few weeks ago so I doubt it's software-related. Plus I've been having issues with it in one form or another since I got it back, which also makes me think it's not the OS.
Anyway, I'm just looking for opinions at this point. I'm going to take it back to the Apple store in a few days because of a small group of dead pixels, so as long as I'm down there I'll ask them. In the meantime, anyone have any thoughts?https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=138105

Weird one shot deal kernel panic
hi,
weirdly, I got a kernel panic while downloading iOs 4.2 in iTunes earlier tonight. The computer log file shows what is down below. Does anyone know what the exact problem was. I shut it down and reopened it without any new kernel panic but that's weird.
thanks in advance

OK, let's just start with I'm an idiot !! I know very little and more than enough to be dangerous !!
The machine is a G4 QS 800 DP running Tiger 10.4.11, it had been working well until about 10 days / 2 weeks ago when problems started, about the same time the Firefox, 3.6.18 update came out and I installed it, the problems may have started BEFORE the FF update by a couple of hours, just not sure now.
I was surfing the net and was interrupted with frozen, darkened screen with a multi language message saying I needed to restart the computer, OK, did that, then about an hour later the same darker screen and message, Ok do it again, then again less than an hourlater again, then 45 mins., then 1/2 hr, then another 1/2 hr, then 20 mins., it continued like this for the next 5 to 7 hours, and 9 or 10 "crashes", all the time the same message, I never saw anything else on the screen for any kind of warning or kernel panic (don't know where they show up).
So the battery is 15 months old and tests good (bought a new one anyway, no change, same problems), did the PMU, several times, for sure wrong & to often, no help there, maybe one out of 100 times I could get it to stay on & get online for awhile by holding the command +S keys till the grey screen started, then release them, the rest of the time, it would begin to start up, 10 to15 seconds and die, ... getting very frustrated I tried the reset on the front, no change, then try the "programmers button" (I said I was dangerously smart) then combinations of PMU, reset, prog'mer buttons, Battery out PMU , battery in Pmu, everything disconnected each time, grounding myself each time, trying to not screw up, but knowing I must have many times, even tried a GOOD HDD that BDAqua checked & partitioned for me that is still blank (no OS yet) with install disc & holding C down, still no good action, for few try's I had both hdd's plugged in and got small icon's 1 & 2 for both hdd's while they were in & plugged in.
I talked with BDAqua on saturday, late, after hours, he had already waited for me, so as I described what I had done, HE said that the PMU should be held for 20 TO 25 seconds (or longer maybe in some cases, my impression of what I was hearing), and here is the BIG THING he said that gave me an idea to ask this question, BDAqua asked if I had / suggested I try, doing the PRAM RESET 5 TIMES IN A ROW, of course I had not, and haven't yet. I did do it a few times in all that I was trying, but never in a row, because 1 time never got a positive result, I didb't think of multiple resets (I'm not all that smart, just dangerous). but from our talk, I think I understand it to mean, It may take many ( or multiples of 5 ?) to clear out (flush out the evil demons from the kernels ???) .......
SO MY QUESTION IS THIS; WHAT ARE THE MAGIC KEYBOARD STEPS / KEY COMBO'S, AND / OR PMU, OR RESET BUTTON, OR PROGRAMMER BUTTON SEQUENCES TO FOLLOW, BEFORE I GIVE UP AND CHANGE THE MOBO, CPU'S, OR WHATEVER, TO TRY AND SALVAGE MY G4 QS ???
ARE THERE MULTIPLES 5 (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 PMU RESETS TO CURE CERTAIN problems, like magic combinations ???)
....... any tricks of the trade that I can try, I have only had this machine for15 months and really like it and want cure it's troubles and WHAT EVER I DID TO IT THAT WAS WRONG !!!, it's a self esteem thing at this point, I can let it beat me because I hurt it, I must make it good to sve my own feelings, even though I did wrong, I must make ammends !!!

Avoid unnecessarily resetting the SMC or PMU for troubleshooting purposes
Note: There is NO magic time required to clear the PMU. A firm, complete push is all that is required.
The PMU reset button is a momentary contact switch because the reset only requires momentary contact.
Another myth is that more than 2 chimes during a PRAM reset resets better.
A reset is a reset.
If you need more than is done in a PRAM reset after 2 chimes, use the NVRAM reset in Open Firmware.

what does "DOS" mean ?? " boot in to DOS ", as you used it ??
Disk Operating System
That would be "DOS like" as in like the screen that you use in booting a Windows machine.
It's the black with white text screen that you get when you boot to Open Firmware (CMD+OPT+O+F)

Kernel Panic when watching videos (and other random times)?
Hi all,
I've been having a lot of trouble with kernel panics and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction for fixing this. I'm aware of the Airport issue mentioned on these forums (and have tried the kext fix for that without any luck). I have KPs when watching 4+ minute long videos on Youtube (have no issue using iMovie for longer videos or watching videos from my own harddrive), sometimes when the screensaver is on or shortly after the computer goes unidle, and sometimes for no apparent reason. I've already had 2-3 KPs in the past 4 hours. This is my first Mac and not at all what I was expecting.
Sometimes the screen will flicker rapidly, other times I will get a black screen, pink screen, or the screen will "glitch" and move halfway to the left (right is now on the left and left on the right). I can sometimes delay the crash if I pause the video (the screen starts to twitch or have "lightning" flashes across parts of it) but it will eventually crash anyway.
I usually use Firefox but have had the same crash in Safari so it's not browser-related as far as I can tell.
Things I have tried (none helped):
Rebooting in safe mode to scan and repair file directories
Resetting the PRAM
Deleting application preferences
Checked and repaired permissions
Checked and repaired hard drive
Calling tech support, which had me do all the above again and unselect the "put hard discs to sleep" option
Reinstalled Lion
Replaced the Kext for the Airport Driver (https://discussions.apple.com/message/15780717#15780717)
Things I can't do (currently) to fix this:
Connect directly to the Internet via an Ethernet cable (the Internet portal is wi-fi only).
I would be happy to downgrade (except if more stable it'd be more of a upgrade at this point ) to Snow Leopard if that is an option, but am not sure how to go about doing that (I don't have a disc for it). Happy to supply any further information needed...
The latest KP (I don't really understand how to read these yet to determine the cause of the crash) -

Got through one video (approximately 5 minutes) that had crashed the system earlier, and about 1.5 minutes into another before it crashed and had to be shut down by hand. Restarted and it crashed again before it had even generated an error report. I shut down by hand again and restarted, and received this error report. Really frustrating. Since SyncMate shows up in both I'll try uninstalling that (haven't used it yet anyway).

Final cut pro make Mac pro kernel panic with RAM from other manufacturers
hi all
if i installed RAM For mac Pro from 667MHz DDR2 fully buffered ECC RAM from other manufacturers
final cut pro (just final cut)
make the machine kernel panic messege
all programs working good (like adobe and other compositing program) but final cut freez the machine and kernel panic
the standard RAMs goodAhmed:
You can try visiting/searching the Expanding your Power Mac G5 forum. You'll find A LOT of help about RAM issues.
Any RAM brand must work but you maust be sure it follows the MAc specs. Some brand sites have good product locator by computer manufacturer/model (i.e. Kingston and Crucial). In fact there is no Apple branded RAM, they use a lot of different ones.
Inside FCP settings you'll find how to manage the memory that the program use, but that settings depends on the total quantity of memory you have installed, and you didn't post that information.

Kernel panics, crashes and other issues
hi all -
i've been reading through tons of posts over the last week about my issue and trying to resolve it but can't seem to get my machine up and running consistently.
it started crashing consistently on jan 10 - suspiciously the day the itunes update came out - and i have since run the fixes people posted relating to that update to no avail.
i keep getting kernel panics - while i'm running photoshop, safari, word, textedit, ical, etc. i took it to a mac authorized repair shop, but they gave it back to me saying they couldn't duplicate the issue described. it started happening again right away - i unplugged everything except the keyboard and mouse. still got them. have run disk utility from the startup disks several times.
one thing i noticed was it seems to repair the same problem every time - "invalid extent entry". i found a post on this board that said only disk warrior can fix that problem in 10.3.9. disk utility says it fixes it, but it comes up every time...
also - after i downloaded and ran onyx it seemed to be better for the last two days. and then today i plugged my scanner in and tried using it. it crashed photoshop and then everything else started crashing even though i unplugged the scanner. i tried looking for a driver update for it, but os 10 couldn't open the file i downloaded from epson - which was:
TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v2.65A
Macintosh OS X (v10.2.x - 10.3.x)
epson11385.sea.hqx - 34.2MB - posted on 04/18/05
a window popped up that said the file didn't appear to be compressed and i should get more information from the manufacturer. i read on this forum that bad drivers can cause kernel panics, but i can't seem to load the update. i also trashed my epson printer driver for good measure.
1) so my first question is: could the invalid extent entry problem be causing kernel panics? or are the two unrelated? should i definitely download disk warrior to fix that?
2) also something i haven't been clear about regarding repairing permissions - do you have to boot from another drive to repair permissions? my internal drive is my startup disk, and i don't have a bootable external drive. i tried repairing permissions with onyx, but it crashes every time. is this because i need to boot from another disk? how do you do that and run onyx?
3) has anyone had the problem with panther not opening the epson 4870 driver update?
i've been trying to solve this for weeks...i'm about to swear off technology altogether and move to the mountains.
thanks for any suggestions you might have!

Until you get the ram figured out there is no hope for a stable system. If you have bad ram then it will corrupt the system as fast as you can repair it.
If you have the hardware test disk it has a ram tester that can, depending on the system and disk, run in extended(on the menu) or looped mode(command l). It usually reports which stick of ram is bad. On a desktop this is a big deal.
On a laptop it is much easier. You usually have a limited number of ram slots. I don't know what mac you are running because you have not filled out any of the info for your profile.
Pull all but one stick of ram and run on the other to see if that helps. If no change, run on the other stick and see if that helps. If all the ram is non Apple then it could be either. Apple ram is usually, but not always, good ram that stays good. By the way, with the dry weather we are having it is important not to risk static zapping of your mac. The easiest way to ground yourself is to be bare foot then touch the power supply case or other metal interior surface of the computer before tackling the electronics.
I like Crucial Ram but OWC also has a lifetime guarantee and they stand behind the ram. If the vendor of replacement ram has a bench tester then that is the best you can do without putting the ram in your mac.
Once you get good ram in your mac then concentrate on the system. In my opinion, Disk Warrior is the only utility that one needs to purchase for X. It can keep fixing your directory but if the ram is bad X will keep getting corrupted again.
That the permissions are not running off of disk is, yes, a bad sign.
When the ram is replaced;
If you have a backup hard drive I'd make sure that it has, at a minimum, all your user data. You can also do this with cd/dvd's.
Reformat the hard drive and zero it to map out bad blocks. The system and applications can be reloaded later and your user data can be imported to the clean, new system. That is what I would make my mind up on doing.
It may be possible to keep your current system running with good ram and Disk Warrior but the odds are that some files have been corrupted and will rear their ugly heads in the future.
Just my 2 cents. -
Good morning,
For over a month now, I have been having intermittent problems with my MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard). If often has kernel panic attacks, when the multilingual message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." This sometimes happens randomly after I have been using the computer for several hours without problems, and sometimes it enters a phase when it keeps reappearing upon startup and it takes many tries before it can fully start up again. Also, sometimes the computer seemingly randomly restarts without any prompting or any sign.
I have also had a few other problems, which I suspect are related. Often as I am using Google Chrome, the "Aw, Snap!" page appears. Sometimes this is followed by the kernel panic. Sometimes I also have this problem where the application bar at the bottom disappears or other funky stuff is going on with the interface.
Finally, sometimes the disk drive does not work -- I would be trying to boot it up from the install DVD right now but some days it won't accept any cds at all.
Is this most likely a hardware problem? Should I just give up on trying to fix it myself and take it to the apple store?
I would greatly appreciate any help! Here's the log for a panic report I just had. Anyone have any ideas?

IMac keeps freezing - kernel panics and other
My iMac keeps freezing on me. Sometimes I get a notice that my computer experience a kernel panic and upon restart have the option of sending the info to Apple, other times it just feezes and I have to do a hard restart but get no prompts about the improper shutdown. This usually happens when I'm working in Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects at the same time.
Am I just overloading the system? And if so, why would it allow me to do that? Shouldn't it just run really slowly or have one application freeze, not the entire system? This hasn't been a problem in the past, it just recently started happening more and more often. Do I need more Ram? That's pretty much the only thing I can upgrade. Here are my system specs, please let me know if you have any suggestions for things I can do to prevent this from happening again. Thank you! Thanks for the replies. Baltwo I'll try running those test and see if they find anything.
Here's a recent Kernel panic log:

Weird Video problem and kernel panic!
Okay, so last ngiht I was running tech tool maintenence, and I had repair on. So, it finished scanning my startup volume (I was on my eDrive) and then I shut down and restarted. Now, it tried to start from my startup volume (tiger 4.7, with latest updates) and it says you need to restart your computer (which means there is a kernel panic, am I right?) I try safe mode to no avail, I even reset the PMU and reset the PRAM (but I didnt hear the starup noise again). So, I put in my backup HD, and it starts up, but wait! Now the video is horribly wrong! It is all in TERRIBLE quality and in mostly only greys, I mean it looks like a 4 mb vram video card, there are very few pixels of color( there are some intermitedly) and there is terrible ghosting, and I can barely read anything. so, I checked my display, and universal access settings, and fooled around with those, and nothing happened. So, now I try and start from my eDriveand it start, but now it has the same horrible color problem as my other drive. Oh boy, this is a new computer, and I already have a kernel pnic, and a video problem, what can I do? Thanks for any help. Matthew. I have a sawtooth, a radeon 9200 flashed video card, and the latest tiger.
What if you tried running mplayer with the following command :
mplayer -fs -zoom filename
As for the "too pixelish" problem well... you could try increasing the "nice" level (at least in VLC). For the other video players I don't know.

Since it references com.apple.iokit.IOFireWireFamily, I suspect that some FW device is causing the panic. Disconnect all of them and see if that stops the problem. As for general KP stuff, start with http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

Macbook kernel panic during boot + other kernel panics! HELP PLEASE
Hello,
I have a w macbook 2,0 ghz duo (2006 edition), 2gb ram, original HD. Operating system: Tiger OsX (updated).
A couple of weeks ago my mb started to display (during a normal session and even after a stand-by) a big message on screen "Please hold down the power button to restart your computer" etc = kernel panic message.
I took a look at the panic.log file and it said:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: firefox-bin
So I thought there was something with firefox and, to resolve definetely this problems, I checked my hd using utility then I tried to install Leopard using the DVD(updated again). After installing Leopard I did not receive kernel panic errors related to firefox-bin thread but now I still have kernel panic problems.
These are the error messages:
1. When I boot up the mb, it shows the "restart" message or it FREEZES (doesn't boot up)
2. The log says that the panic error is related to "ACPI" and Io.apple.firewirefamily (what is it???)
3. The panic.log file just says:

Anyone know how to fix these problems?
Thank you very much

Kernel panics, plus some other bizarro problem
Hi
So I've been getting kernel panics for a while with my mac pro duo core job, so I went to the mac genius, who did a little trouble shooting, and resolved that it had something to do with the hard drive. So I got a new hard drive, reinstalled OSX, and got kernel panics.
I ran the hardware checker thru a few cycles, but that came up fine. Not sure what else to do really. Is there some way to tell what the problem is by looking at the panic log? Should I post it here?
Also, the bizarro problem. Now the mac, for some reason, will stop sending signal to the monitor and, as far as i can tell, the keyboard. I noticed this when I was importing something into avid (my editing software), and my screen went from bright with color and pictures, to off (deep, empty blackness and a "no signal" report on the screen). Also, the dongle which I use to run Avid has a light on when it is plugged in. That went from on to off as well. However the pilot light was still glowing on the mac, and the external drive was still writing what I was importing (it was humming along).
Does anyone have any idea a direction I should go in here to fix this issue?
Thanks for any input! Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Here is a great MacFixIt article.
Good Luck! DALE
