Kernel Panics over hard drive check

This happened out of nowhere.. I just opened gtk-chtheme and everything freezed... I hen hard rebooted the machine and it gave me a kernel panic. Rebooted again and the kernel panic happened during UDEV loading. Rebooted again and now it always happens during SDC1 journal's recovery (my /home partition).
I live-booted partition magic but when trying to mount sdc1--kernel panic....
Tried to mount it on windows "Drive is not formated" (all other Linux partitions work)
Booted from the arch cd (with root=/dev/sdb2 (my root partition)) and it gave me, not a kernel panic, but an error message about the state of the journaling system and the option to either use a  maintenance shell or CTRL+D to reboot.
How do I recover this HD? Or better yet.. how do I backup my data from it?

What is the filesystem you use on that partition (sdc1)?

  • Kernel panic, restored hard drive, stuck on loading screen....

yesterday i had a kenel panic occur when i booted up my Macbook Pro, i tried to boot to an SMC, tried to boot to a PRAM, finally booted to the install disk.  Went to disk utility, erased the hard drive and restored it to a Time Machine Back up done 2 days ago.  Turned on the computer, now it's stuck on the loading screen, but no kernel panic message.....booted again to the install disk, verified and repaired HD, and got the message the HD seems to be okay.  WEnt to reboot and stuck again on loading screen.  Help me get to my computer......please!!!
Let me know if you need further information, would love any help i can get.....thank you!!

a brody, thanks so much for the advice.  quick question on the particulars: this is what i am assuming you mean to do:
    1. go back to disk utility from the install disk and wipe the hard drive again.
    2. run the install disk again and just try to install the base operating system from that disk
    3. see if there are any problems from that point
    4. diagnose problems
is this correct, or should i be installing the base operating system from another point (i.e. my external hard drive time machine back up, somewhere else in the Disk Utility options, etc.)
    Thanks again for the help.

Thanks for the reply and the advice.
I was not able to get the machince to boot into Safe Mode. The progress bar stopped at arounf 25% and would not move.
I did go ahead and delete the software you mentioned as a way of troubleshoting the initial problem, with no sucess.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • MacBook Kernel Panic com.apple.driver.AirPort Atheros5424(120.31.1)

    Hi Everyone!
Over the last couple of days my MacBook performs a kernel panic and forces me to restart. I have to restart a couple of times before it works properly again, but sometimes the screen stays black when I turn it on, and it just sits there until I restart it again using the power button.
I've taken dump of the error message in panic.log and it appears that it is the AirPort card causing problems. Can someone confirm this, and suggest what I need to do to resolve this issue as it is becoming quite annoying now. I bought my MacBook back in October last year, so it should still be under warranty.
Heres the relevent content of the panic.log:

    Darwin Kernel Version 8.9.1: Thu Feb 22 20:55:00 PST 2007; root:xnu-792.18.15~1/RELEASE_I386

    Hey boys and girls...
Well, after reading a few of the posts, I can say this:
    1. I have the N activated from the factory- This is a week old macbook. (Utilities/Network Utility, choose en1 from the dropdown - if you see (802.11 a/b/g/n), you have n installed)
    2. The ONLY airport driver loaded into the kernel is atheros, meaning it MUST be the active driver. See kextstat -l | grep -i airport
    3. I have been monkeying with replacing extensions from previous versions. So far, I have not had a wifi dropout or kernel panic... BUT IT'S EARLY IN MY TESTING.
Here's how I replaced the extension. This is taken directly from a macfixit tutorial. NOTE: 10.4.9 still produced a wifi lockup. I have now used the airport kext (I chose all I found) in 10.4.8 and SO FAR (only tonight) I have not had a dropout. IT COULD STILL HAPPEN THOUGH, SO YMMV:
Reverting to older AirPort kernel extensions [Useful for: slow wireless throughput, router not recognized]
f you are experiencing dire AirPort connectivity issues after a major system update (incremental Mac OS X update or Security Update), and have exhausted all other workarounds, you can try reverting to older version of the AirPort kernel extension via the following steps: [WARNING: This workaround is risky because you should not generally mix and match kernel extensions after updates. You will also lose any AirPort-related refinements brought about by the most recent update and new conflicts can ensue. Still, in a bind, it can restore wireless connectivity where other workarounds fail.]
    1. Download the Mac OS X combo updater directly precedent to your current system version if you applied an incremental Mac OS X update (e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.9), or your current system version if you applied a security update from Apple's download page.
    2. Download and install the shareware application Pacifist
    3. Drag the Mac OS X combo installer package (e.g. MacOSXUpd10.4.9Intel.pkg) onto the Pacifist application icon.
    4. Click the triangle next to System to expand it
    5. Click the triangle next to Library to expand it
    6. Click the triangle next to Extensions to expand it
    7. Scroll down and find the file AppleAirPort.kext. Drag it to your Desktop or another location (you will have to enter your administrator password)
    8. On your Mac OS X startup drive, navigate to /System/Library/Extensions and locate a similarly named file (AppleAirPort.kext). Move it to another location for safe keeping.
    9. Now drag the file from step 7 (the one that you retrieved from the Mac OS X combo install package) into the /System/Library/Extensions directory on your startup, in effect replacing the newer file (installed by the AirPort updater) with and older copy -- you will have to enter an administrator password.
    10. Restart your Mac

  • Kernel panic, now external drive won't mount

I had a kernel panic on my trusty old Powerbook G4 867MHz today. It's running 10.5.8.
Everything on the computer seems to be fine after restart, but the WD MyBook 500MB that is connected directly to one of the PowerBook's USB ports now won't mount.
The drive spins, but no show on the desktop.
Disk Utility sees it. Verification and Repair work perfectly and pronounce the drive in perfect working order. I just can't mount it. Restart makes no difference. Neither does switching USB ports.
I have also connected it directly to an iMac running 10.6.2. The iMac's Disk Utility can also see the drive and tell me that it's in fine health, but it, too, can't mount it. In the drive list in the Disk Utility pane, the first line of description of the drive is black like all the rest. The second line — the working name I have given the WD500 — is grayed out.
    Three questions:
    1. Have I tried everything?
    2. Is this situation retrievable?
    3. If the worst happens and it cannot be mounted as is, what is the easiest way to get files off the drive so I can erase and reconfigure it?
    Thanks in advance.

    HI Norman,
*" If the worst happens and it cannot be mounted as is, what is the easiest way to get files off the drive so I can erase and reconfigure it?"*
There are no way to retrieve those files without connecting to your Mac(s).
*"The second line — the working name I have given the WD500 — is grayed out."*
It's possible the drive has died. Especially since it won't mount on either Mac.
Go here for help to Resolve Kernel Panics
Also, if the WD MyBook came with any software, try reinstalling it.
    And try repairing disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • KERNEL PANICS OVER AND OVER CRASH

my last report 06/16. i had two panics 30mins apart. i get them sometimes weeks apart or up too two+ in same day. got my macbook in 2007 model came out new and in 2009 my system crashed white screen saying it could not find my had drive disk and i lost everything. I reinstalled the CD mac os X myself and i fear that not happen again because my mac is still brand new 2007 and i keep it clean so i dont how in 2009 i lost my whole drive. i have a fan for my mac's heat temp.

I WAS ABOUT TO BE MORE ANGREY but it had a recover for this topic. i only had this 2007 graduation gift first mac ever and i have so many problems i rather go back to windows and deal with the viruses.

  • Lion, MPB, Kernel Panic, com.apple.driver.CoreStorage

    Greetings
I started to get Kernel Panics (2 today). I pasted in the last one.
The last one happened while Time Machine was running and Spotlight did indexing.
I cannot say for sure that this was the case when the first kernel panic was thrown but I presume it was.
CPU was pretty busy both times and the fans running full speed.
Anyone any thoughts on what's going on here?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Stefan

com.sophos.kext.sav - do you use some AV scanner?
if it is set up to block access to infected files and you have some of them somewhere in downloads or mail attachments - it can try to block spotlight and/or time machine access - thus probably causing deadlock in storage subsystem.
Do you know that for now the only malware for Mac is cured by mac os itself? (there was appropriate update)
all known to me Mac antivirus software scans for Windows viruses, which are of no harm to you.
Anyway, boot from DVD and repair HD
otherwise may be one of your's mounted media is dying - try to see smart status for it, espesially bad blocks remapped
trying to read from scratched DVD wery rarely can cause KP also

  • Kernel Panics and Zip Drives

I seem to be getting kernel panics when using an older model 250 Iomega Zip Drive. I upgraded to Tiger (from 9.4--yikes!) 6 months ago, but only recently reconnected the Zip drive. I did go to the Iomega site to download the latest drivers. The kernel panics appear to be happening when I try to erase zip disks using the drive.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Thanks!

Leslie, here are some tips from Dr.Smoke's X-Lab for trash problems and for kernel panics which is what you are experiencing.
Since the cause is obviously the zip drive, it seems that the hardware or software may be incompatible with your system. Although, I just connected an old (about 10 years) powered Zip 100 to a usb port to test and it seems to run fine.
Have you tried a different usb port to eliminate a problem with that port?
Have you tried different zip disks? It may one of the files you are trying to trash is corrupted or believes it is "in use" by an application. Or it may be the disk itself. Also what format is the disk in? Mac OS Extended or another format? Use Disk Utility to find out.
Have you tried creating a fresh user account and repeating the process to test?
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your trash from the zip works in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
    Let us know.

  • Hard Drive Check

    Hey users,
I'm new around this forum and just want some quick help.
Just to inform everyone, I already tried contacting Apple but after being put on hold for an hour, and finally finding someone to talk to, the call hung up after three minutes, so I don't think I'd want to do that again...
Anyway, I'd like to install OS X Yosemite, but it tells me there are S.M.A.R.T errors on my Hard Drive. I've tried reinstalling my OS X, and everything else I've seen online, but nothing has fixed these errors, so it's come down to me trying to figure out a way I can bypass this screen and force OS X Yosemite to install on my Macbook Pro (2012). Is there any way to do this?

You stated; "so it's come down to me trying to figure out a way I can bypass this screen and force OS X Yosemite to install on my Macbook Pro (2012)."
You don't want to do that.
If you have disk errors then the installation of Yosemite will probably be bad. Fix your disk drive. Which will probably take replacement of the disk drive.
I suggest you backup everything and then make an appointment to have Apple look at it. They will tell you what they problem is with it.
If you ask them nicely they may even upgrade it for you.

  • Hard Drive warning when upgrading to Mountain Lion. 2 try and I was able to upgrade. Software update for IPhoto, had problems restarting. Do I need my hard drive checked

Hard Drive warning when upgrading to Mountain Lion. 2nd try and I was able to upgrade. Software update for IPhoto, had problems restarting. Do I need my hard drive checked

    Yes.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.
When you see a white screen with an Apple logo in the middle, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, and then click Continue.
In the list at the left, select the item you want to repair. (Be sure to select an item that’s indented to the right in the list, not an item at the far left.)
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done.
Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following steps.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and then restore your backed-up data.
If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced

  • Is it possible to bypass Domain Controller Promotion (dcpromo) Hard Drive Check? My Server has an embedded drive instead of a SATA port. (emmc)

I have a small computer with just an embedded drive instead of a sata port. It seemed perfect for a small domain controller, since it has 32G's which is more than enough space, and with a gigabit Ethernet, and 1.6Ghz dual core cpu, seemed more than enough
    for what I needed.
Windows 2012, or Windows Server Technical Preview, both install fine on it, but when I run dcpromo to create the domain It fails on selecting the location for files. The error is that the path is not a hard drive. The machine only has USB ports so I can't
add a SATA drive just to store these logs/configs, even if I wanted to.
The actual computer I was trying to use: http://www.ecs.com.tw/LIVA/
    Thanks for any help.

On the Windows Server Technical Preview,
    Install-ADDSForest -SkipPreChecks -DomainName DOMAIN.CONTOSO.COM -DomainMode Win2008 -ForestMode Win2008R2 –DatabasePath "C:\Windows\NTDS" –SYSVOLPath "C:\Windows\NTDS" –LogPath "C:\Windows\NTDS\Logs"
gives me the error "No NTFS 5 drives exit." (note exit, not exist)
I'll reinstalling windows 2012 and see if I get a different message there.
This was just a standard install, so the drive is definitely NTFS.

  • My t-box hard drive check in progress only get to 98% not 100%

Hi Fuzzy, has been known to happen to others. Try unmounting the hard drive. Instructions are here : http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/T-Box/freezing-Tbox/m-p/246053/highlight/true#M5372 See the second post.

I am not sure about battery, I still use G4 MDD which is unplugged for months, was always off at night (UPS was off) and still works.
But I would always use both SATA drive bays, and I think you need to invest in one or two new drives.
For now, try disconnecting your drive and see if you can boot from external drive and CD/DVD.
Also see if you can get into Open Firmware.
Resetting PMU would also be worth while when you get in to disconnect your hard drive (I think 3 yrs is more than enough for any OEM drive, too).

  • Hard drive check error - 9ag56w-77m7nr-mfpv7f-609e03

During upgrade my pc shutdown weirdly. Tried to boot and black screen said "boot device not found please install an OS". On HP support website I found that I had to set BIOS settings to default. Now it says "SMART Hard Disk Error". When I try to test the disk it gives me this error: 9ag56w-77m7nr-mfpv7f-609e03. Automatic repair does nothing. Also the fan goes crazy and a unusual ticking sound comes from within the laptop.
    Help!

SMART errors typically mean the harddrive is about to fail.  If the notebook really is " still covered by warranty. ", then have a talk with support to get it repaired.

  • Kernel panics after AppleCare service

    Hello,
I've just got my Mac Pro back from the AppleCare service in Tyson's Corner Apple store where I put it last year because of multiple Kernel Panics and Hard Drive crash. They replaced my Hard Drive with a new one and said that everything is fine with the hardware, including memory. Today on the second day my computer at home I got two Kernel panics again! The panic log shows this:

May be some one could tell me what caused this exact panics?
The first panic happened while I was plugging in a USB hub and the second just without any reason and when everything was unplugged and no software started. I called to AppleCare and they said I should bring my computer to the Apple store again but I'm not sure they will find anything because they didn't for 14 days it was there!
    Any suggestion?
    Thank you,
    Vlad

the third panic in a few hours.... I red on forums that it can happen when the logic board doesn't work properly. I'm going to bring my computer back to the Apple store tomorrow but what if they don't find anything again after two weeks in "service"?
