Kernel Panics when booted to external FW using 10.4.8

Using 10.4.7 things worked fine whether I booted on internal drive or external LaCie D2 FW
I upgraded to 10.4.8 on the PB G4 15", a PB G4 12" and an external LaCie 2D 3-port firewire
The PB 15" and the PB 12" work fine, read/write, etc and backed up the LaCie drive fine
Boot from either PB to the LaCie drive and I get a kernel panic (below) within seconds
- Problem exists with both PBs 12" & 15" (but I ran TechTool to make sure things (RAM, etc) are fine
- Reset PRAM and PMU
- Booted in Safe mode
- Ran Permissions update
- Reinstalled 10.4.8, then 10.4.8 combo
- Used disk Utility to repair disk, minor problems
- Eliminated all start up apps
Last night it would run for five minutes before panic, today, just boot to FW and panic will happen in 15 secs - no apps running

Kernel Panic When Booting with Install DVD

I get a kernel panic when booting from the OSX 4 (tiger) install DVD. I am using a Quad G-5 with 8 gigs of ram.

Have to ask what version your Quad came with, whether same DVD you are using now. Apple now has Tiger DVDs w/ 10.4.6 for sale.
When booting, or when you get to the screen to select Languages on the initial screen (before you can select DU or Installer etc)?
How about Option booting to Apple Hardware Test and running extended test?
Did you run memtest or anything when you installed RAM (assuming you didn't buy it BTO w/ 8GB).
Any time adding or changing hardware, including memory, it is either a good policy or essential in some cases to boot into Open Firmware (command option of) on startup and type "reset-nvram" and 'reset-all" after installing. Same for PCIe or even swapping out disk drive (where sometimes a drive won't show up or allow you to partition).

Kernel panic when booting from DVD or external drive

Hey Folks,
I have a 13" MBP, seems to run fine for the most part.
However, I can't boot from DVDs or external hard drives. Disk Warrior, my and a tech support buddy of mine's OSX Snow Leopard DVDs, and external boot disks all cause a kernel panic when selected from the alternate boot menu when rebooting with alt.
The DVD/External spins up, the loading spinner goes for about 20-30 seconds, and then BAM - Kernel panic. I'd reinstall OSX... but I can't!
Any suggestions? I'd rather not send the computer to a tech for a week - I need it daily for work.

PowerBook wake on Sleep-then kernel panic when re-mounting External Drives

Hey all, I found a peculiar behavior with my PowerBook and my Lacie External Hard Drive. If I wake up my PowerBook from sleep, either by shaking the mouse, or opening the lid- the computer sometimes kernel panics when it attempts to re-recognize my partitioned 250 gig external hard drive. This seems to happen 1 out of every 5 times. The external is already mounted that I can tell upon waking; its just that it seems like it panics when it tries to recognize it again. Any one else experienced this? I've had this problem since I've had my external drive, and that probably dates back to 10.4.2. Thanks!

Hi, Zach.
You might want to try a different FireWire cable, a different FireWire port on your Mac (if available), or contact LaCie, the latter as the enclosure may be malfunctioning. Another potential problem area, although this also usually shows up as spontaneous dismounts of the FireWire drive, is the FireWire drive's power supply, i.e. its power brick, but that seems less likely here.
While it certainly seems like you've isolated the cause to the FireWire drive, you may also want to review my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.

Kernel panic when booting...

My beloved 12" PB has run flawlessly since I got it. Last night I discovered that the fan was working hard and the laptop didn't respond to anything, so I did a force reboot.
My problem now is, I can't get past the grey screen with the Apple logo without getting the kernel panic message.
I've tried everything (I think): reset PRAM, restarted in safe mode, verbose mode, with an OS X disc, with a DiskWarrior disc, from an external drive; but it never gets past the grey logo, and always ends with a kernel panic. I've even tried using the computer in target disc mode, which gave my iMac G5 a kernel panic.
I've managed to run the original Hardware test CD, and the extended test gave me nothing: it reported no problems with anything.
I've taken good care of the computer, and have never installed anything that would tamper with the system.
This is extremely frustrating. Can anyone please shed some light on what's going on?!

The first cause of kernal panics that the X Lab (from BGreg's link) states is bad RAM. Your original post shows you have 640 MB RAM and your PB model has a 128 MB module soldered on and a 512 MB module in the removable RAM slot. Forgive me if you have tried the following, but did not post it...You might try removing the 512 MB RAM module to see if you can get your PB running again.

BTW: RAM from Apple can go bad as it happened to me recently.

Kernel Panic when booting external USB drive (WD Essential 250GB)

Greetings...I recently was tasked with setting up three bootable external volumes for a co-worker, so I purchased a Western Digital Essential 250 GB drive.
Everything worked just fine on my end, I was able to boot into each of the three external volumes continually and then shipped the drive to my co-worker, who when he tries to boot into any of the three drives gets a kernel panic.
We are using different models of MacBookPro (15 in. 2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) for me and MacBookPro (15 in., 2.2 Ghz dual-processor Intel) for him. We THINK it might have to do with a firmware mismatch from the two machines:
Mine:
Boot ROM Version: MBP22.00A5.B07
SMC Version: 1.12f5
His:
Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
SMC Version: 1.16f8
...but we've never had these types of problems before, even with mismatched hardware. The OS and kernel versions (10.4.11, Darwin 8.11.1) we're running are identical, according to ASP.
The only other weird thing is his panic log registers a different kernel version than what ASP reports, though that might be normal since hardware is not my thing:

In short, if anyone has any ideas how we can get these drives to boot or can confirm that it is impossible with the mismatched firmware so we can move forward with a plan B, I would greatly appreciate it.

Yes, sort of.
I used 10.4.8 disks to install, but used the Apple Software Update to upgrade to 10.4.11 on two of the volumes. I was still able to boot with my machine after that however.
As an update, my co-worker was able to "fix" one of the drives by upgrading with some 10.4.9 disks he had. He is now able to boot from that drive. That is not an option with the two others since they are already at 10.4.11.

Kernel Panic when booting from Install Disk

My problem started when I was scanning my hard drive for problems with the Disk Utility.
It notified me that I do have some issues that could be resolved by restarting my computer with the Snow Leopard Installation Disk and running the DIsk Utility from there.
I tried to do that and it starts to boot up from the DVD but after about 30 seconds I get the Kernel Panic messege (You Need To Restart Your Computer...) in various languages and I have to restart again.
I also have the installation USB that comes with the MacBook Air and I get the same messege so I know it's not a problem with the installation disk itself.
Does anyone know what to do? I can't find a solution anywhere online.

The next step is to reseat the RAM, meaning remove it and put it back in.
If that doesn't work, then remove one module, try booting, move that module to the other slot, try booting, repeat with other module.
If neither RAM module works in either slot, then there are almost certainly other hardware issues (usually the logic board, which covers a plethora of possibilities; unfortunately, the fix for almost any LB issue is to replace the entire LB), as the odds of both RAM modules and/or both slots being faulty are extremely low (but possible).

Panic when booting from external firewire drive

Hi all
I have just returned from holidays to the following problem:
While I was away a colleague upgraded a PowerMac G5 from OS X 10.3 to OS X 10.5.1 . He also upgraded an OS X 10.4 installation on an external firewire drive to 10.4.11 while connected to the G5. Now suddenly the 10.4.11 installation on the external firewire drive will not boot when connected to the PowerMac G5 - it kernel panics almost immediately. However it will still boot when connected to a PowerMac G4.
Has anybody seen or experienced this? Any ideas?

Tiger DVD disk cause kernel panic when booting on a new G5

I was trying to boot a fairly new G5 system, less than 4 months old, using a retail copy of the 10.4 DVD installation disk. The computer could mount the disk and I can see its contents, but when I booted from it using the C key, I get a kernel panic.
I tried booting from the DVD on an older G5, and it worked without any problems. Assuming that it is not a DVD drive issue, do I need to get an update for the retail Tiger DVD disk to boot newer G5s?

You can generally only use newer retail disks than the disks which came with the computer to boot and install operating systems, as well as those which came with the computer to boot and install operating systems. If you are missing the disks which came with your computer, call AppleCare to ask for a replacement.

And if you are on dialup, some authorized service centers may let you bring in a CD to burn the updates. Check with the ones in your area.

Kernel Panic when booting from OS X install CD

Hello,
I have a PowerMac G4 Mirrored Door that used to run 10.4.8 and was acting wonky. I repaired permissions and did the hardware test to no avail so I decided to clear the drive and reinstall the OS.
I reinstalled 10.2.1 with the original CD's and that went smoothly. I then attempted to update to 10.4.8 with the OS 10.4 install CD's that we had purchased. And when the computer tries to boot from the CD I get a Kernel Panic once the apple appears on the grey screen but before the status bar starts turning.
I reset the PRAM and updated to 10.2.8 but still got the panic when I tried again.
Here is the begining of the panic code:
panic cpu 0 caller 0x002E54BC: Unable to find driver for this platform: "PoerMac3,6"
The CD's I used say "For Mac Computers".
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Unfortunatlly I was not here when the computer was upgraded last (I freelance at a studio with many computers that need constant attention). I was told that these were the CD's that were purchased for the upgrade and I've looked in vain for others.
They are 2 gray Apple CD's. The first install CD says "For Mac Computers" above Mac OS X install Disc 1. They each came in a sleeve with a sticker that says "Common Media Multillingaul"
These are the wrong CD's, aren't they? The correct ones have been lost, haven't they?
I was really hoping that wasn't the case.

Kernel panic when booting from Tiger install DVD

Short version: When I try to boot up from the Tiger installation DVD, my Power Mac G5 gives me a kernel panic. Can anyone help?
Here's the story:
I have a Power Mac G5 that I've been running Leopard on for quite some time now. Unfortunately, the software I need to use (Final Cut Studio 1) has some incompatibilities with Leopard, so I was thinking I would put Tiger back on the machine in a separate partition on the second hard drive.
I tried booting the Power Mac using the retail (black label) Tiger DVD and holding down the "C" key. The Apple logo appears on screen, but is immediately followed by a kernel panic. I'm never able to access the features on the disc. The same thing happens if I try holding down "option" during boot instead: I'm correctly allowed to choose whether to boot from the hard drive or the DVD, but once I choose the DVD, I get the Apple logo and then a kernel panic.
The same Tiger DVD works fine on other computers, so I know it's not the disc. And the Power Mac itself handles everything else without problem.
I'm kind of desperate, as I need to finish this project this week. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!

Kernel Panic when boot MacBook Pro (related to ACPI driver)

Hi,
since the first day that I received my MacBook Pro I have a kernel panic sometimes (not always). When it occurs i have to hard reset the computer, and normally it comes another kernel panic (a second). Finally, in the third boot, it boots and all is ok, the system goes very well.

Glad you are getting this taken care, and also glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I had kernel panics with my MBP, so I sent it back to amazon for a refund. It was my only real problem with the machine, though, which I loved otherwise. But kernel panics are a serious defect.

Kernel panic when booting btrfs raid1 without sda

Hi,
I'm using a default kernel 3.6.3 and have a btrfs raid1 (data and metadata) over two hard drives (sda3 and sdb). My system is a subvolume, which works fine. If I remove the first hard drive (which contains grub2), however, and boot using a live cd, I get a kernel panic (image at http://s12.postimage.org/8y0pgvs99/arch … panic.png)
whenever I try to mount the remaining raid1 as degraded
mount -o degraded /dev/sda /mnt
(/sda then is the one and only hard disk).
I do this all for testing reasons: I want to simulate a hard drive failure. But right now it just looks like I could not access that data in case of a real failure ;-(

In case anyone has the same problems as I did: I found a workaround.
I installed grub on both devices. Since my /boot and / are only subvolumes in the btrfs `device', they are on both physical disks. If the first device fails, I simply boot from the grub of the second disk into the system stored on the second disk (with mount option `degraded') -- and since I mount the btrfs-disk via UUID, I don't have to change /etc/fstab or anything.

I currently boot of my SATA drive. Whenever I try to boot up with an additional IDE or SCSI drive, I get a kernel panic. Anyone have any ideas?

What's the error message the kernel panics with? Does the sata drive remain at the same device node? You might want to use persistent naming for your hdd's.

Kernel Panic when booting to Tiger DVD

Subject line says it all. It's 2x2.5GHz G5 running 10.4.10. When I try to boot to the install DVD, I get a kernel panic. The drive works for things like installing apps, and the HD installation of Tiger boots fine, but no can boot from DVD. Is this a hardware issue?

I just dropped off my quad at the local Apple Authorized shop. Their tech took a look at my pic http://homepage.mac.com/chadself/.cv/chadself/Sites/.Public/G-MAc%20Kernal%20Pan ic%20200709281906.pdf-zip.zip of the panic screen and feels like it may be the logic board. Maybe it is. The system still will boot to my desktop and runs thoughstill feels slow and is a bit flakey. (Compressor still crashes before it can launch, iTunes occasionally hangs etc)
The Apple Care tech (very friendly and professional though having to repeat everything three times meant the diagnosis took much longer than necessary) had me remove all cables including power and hold power button for 20 seconds, plus run disk util, eventually gave up and sent me to repair center.
I'll let you know what they say. I can tell you that running FCP Studio off my laptop (even if it is a MBP with 2GB mem) is not nearly as productive.;)
