Kernel panics when I wake up my Mac Pro from sleep mode.
Hi All,
This problem occurs about twice a week and has been happening for a few months. I have taken my Mac to two authorized repair centers and they can not find any problems. Both had the Mac for a few days and ran the hardware stress test. I have a 2011 Quad Core running ML 10.8.5 with 16GB ram. Today when it happend, the power light was not doing the pulsating and it was well past my one hour limit for sleep mode. I went to tap the space bar and instant shut down with kernel panic. Only application running was Firefox. I'll post the panic log. The repairs centers found them to be of no use. I have tried to reset the SMC, Pram and repaired the permissions. My next step was to try to replace the graphics card which is the ATI Radeon 5770. I have a spare. I'm lost. Please help. Thanks!!!!

Hello hmnshgrwl,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

The System Management Controller (SMC) is responsible for many low-level functions on Intel-based Macs.

Keeping Mac Pro in sleep mode when not in use
Is there any harm to the computer system to put it in sleep mode each time it is not in use as opposed to shutting the system down? I apologize if this is considered a silly question but curious to know if it causes any harm to the system apart from using up a small amount of hydro,
Thanks for your helpThanks for the reply.
That's what I thought but just thought I would throw out the question to confirm. Putting the Mac Pro in sleep mode certainly makes for much quicker startup although coming from a Windows Vista environment the Mac is certainly much faster at startup than my PC. I do use a UPS on all my systems and have it configured much the same as you.

USB doesn't wake up after waking MacBook Pro from Sleep Mode
I have a problem with my new MacBook Pro.
I attach an Apple 20" cinema display to the macbook pro USB connector and then I attach my apple keyboard and mouse to my cinema display.
When I wake up my macbook from being asleep my mouse and keyboard are not activated. I have to unplug my cinema display USB connector and unplug my keyboard from the display and then plug them all back in again to get them to re-activate.
Anybody know why this is occurring, its very frustrating each time my machine goes to sleepIn that case, does the problem still exist when starting up the MBP in Safe mode and then putting it to sleep and awakening it?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 -
I then have to reboot the computer. Now I generally use Safari, which is much smaller and has fewer options. If this problem is as wide spread as other sites indicate, why hasn't Firefox fixed it?
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault
An obscure bug in OS X
You can rule out the first two possibilities by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it as directed in this support article.
If you've recently upgraded the memory, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Otherwise, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Wake up my Mac Pro 3.1 early 2008
The matter that when I wake up my Mac pro 3.1 (early 2008) from sleep the console keeps refering:
"10/1/15 11:55:53.000 AM kernel[0]: IOATAController device blocking bus."
hasn't be solved in Yosemite. Is it due to not APPLE approved Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD, or My Mac incompatibility?
I face that matter also on every OS I used since I installed an intel SSD in the past, so I keep disabled sleep time in preferences pane all these years!Did you try the SSD in any other sata Bay?
About trim:
this what I said in another thread about it (Re: Slow Intel 530 SSD in Mac Pro 1.1 (only write is slow) ):
Trim is a OS command that tells the SSD which files are deleted in the system. So that Garbage Collection can work more efficiently, but is is still the SSD controller that actually makes the deleted blocks free to write on. That said, for GarbageCollection to work well you need to have enough free space on the SSD, for example 5GB free on a SSD is too low and will cause slow write speeds.
In addition, when there is not much overprovisiong the lifetime of a SSD is shorter that with much overprovisioning: so if you think that the SSD slow write speed is due to this, reformat and let a serious space unformatted, like 10%.
As said in another thread about Trim, for Trim to work in Yosemite you need the disrobe a layer of security, personally I was a proponent of Trim in the "Grant Pannel period", a few yrs ago, in the time that teenager Oskar Groth started to copy the GP commandline in an app, in the beginning there were a lot of issues with that app but later on it was issue free. Allessandro Boschini had the same approach but used C to program his tool. Nowadays, with the SSDs having much better controllers, I propose that the install of Trim in Yosemite is not worth the loss of security. All in all, installing trim is a serious hack in a Core kext. There are (sporadic) reports that the trim hack in a Mac can lead to issues. Until now nobody has revealed what Apple uses as special in the Apple built in SSDs in which case there is a trim command in the OS.

Cannot type or use track pad when waking from sleep mode - frozen!
I've had this ongoing and random problem that occurs when I wake my PowerBook G4 Titanium from sleep. Basically, I can't type or use the track pad, the only thing that works is plugging a mouse into the USB port and clicking OK numerous times or Cancel (so it goes back to sleep, then wake it up again). Usually, about the 2nd or 3rd time of putting it back to sleep and waking it up again, the typing returns. I've also noticed that if I lift the keyboard and put it back down firmly it sometimes works, however, I have a feeling it has nothing to do with the keyboard, but more an internal issue.
Any ideas?? I'm lost...
ChrisI purchased a 17" PB in early March.
I had various issues such as the one as you have described. I decided to never let the machine sleep and shut it down when not using it. Completely different than the way I treated my 15" which never slept or froze.
I have also had the issue of the computer freezing basically when not really doing anything RAM intensive at all... This would happen about once an hour.
I read through endless posts here and did endless tests, etc. I replaced both RAM chips and had apparently solved the problem as I did not have a crash in over a week.
But, recently it has begun freezing about once a day.
I really don't have an answer for it. I have an upcoming out of town project that I need to take the PB on, freezing or not.
When I return though, my first stop is to take the machine to the Apple Store for observation / repair.
I'll let you know what they discover. -
CAN the Mac Pro deep-sleep with the Apple Raid Card?
So, reading through previous posts, there seems to be a problem (or 'feature' to charge the battery?) that prevents the Mac Pro from sleeping when the Apple Raid Card is installed.
Can users owning this setup corraborate? Is this indeed the intended way to work?
Thx,
Danas far as I know, deep sleep is only available for portable machines. if you meant regular sleep I cant help you because I haven't got a RAID card.
edit: I may have confused deep sleep with safe sleep… sorry. -
PowerBook wake on Sleep-then kernel panic when re-mounting External Drives
Hey all, I found a peculiar behavior with my PowerBook and my Lacie External Hard Drive. If I wake up my PowerBook from sleep, either by shaking the mouse, or opening the lid- the computer sometimes kernel panics when it attempts to re-recognize my partitioned 250 gig external hard drive. This seems to happen 1 out of every 5 times. The external is already mounted that I can tell upon waking; its just that it seems like it panics when it tries to recognize it again. Any one else experienced this? I've had this problem since I've had my external drive, and that probably dates back to 10.4.2. Thanks!
Hi, Zach.
You might want to try a different FireWire cable, a different FireWire port on your Mac (if available), or contact LaCie, the latter as the enclosure may be malfunctioning. Another potential problem area, although this also usually shows up as spontaneous dismounts of the FireWire drive, is the FireWire drive's power supply, i.e. its power brick, but that seems less likely here.
While it certainly seems like you've isolated the cause to the FireWire drive, you may also want to review my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
Good luck!

I tried updating our G5 Xserve with the 10.4.7 DVD. Since I have only a CD drive in the Xserve, I used a Mac Mini in target mode with the Server Install DVD in the MacMini DVD drive. Upon restart at the beginning of the install process, I get a Kernal panic.
I have a Village Tronic MPDDpro graphics card with latest drivers. 1 GB of memory. (I also tried using an external DVD firewire drive, but get the same kernel panic when Xserve tries to boot from the OS X Server DVD)
I was unable to get the xrdiags to provide any output. Tried unsuccessfully to get a Mac Mini running OS X Server to Netboot properly, so tried with xrdiags on a CD. Again no output back to the terminal administering the xrdiags start.
I tried putting the Xserve in target mode and installing the 10.4.7 from the Mac Mini. Install process went through successfully, but when I rebooted the Xserve, and before getting to the Setup Assistant, I got the Kernel Panic again.
Needing then to re-install 10.3, I reinstalled the 10.3 Server with the original disks and updated to 10.3.9 and reinstalled all the application software and setup users etc, (days of work) all went well with 10.3.9 Server.
I need to get up to 10.4.7 soon!
Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks for helping. I'm green at this! Getting definite experience as you can see, but can you help me with an actual real live make and model of a graphics card that is known to work on the G5 Xserve?
I called ATI re: their Radeon 9200, and was told by tech support that they do not support this card on the G5 Xserve. Yet, Scott Maiden, in his post above, referenced an ATI Radeon card.
What cards are being successfully used? Can I have a list?
Apple Tech Support will not give any such list. Maybe they know of some problem with all? (When I bought the Xserve in September of 2004, Apple Tech Support recommended the VillageTronic card.) The new, yet un-released Quad-core 64-bit Intel Xeon Xserve has "built-in graphics functionality, with mini-DVI output and support for industry-standard VGA displays," according to Apple's web site. Hopefully this will eliminate this type of problem in future releases of Xserve. But for the nasty here and now...
All I need is an inexpensive graphics card to administer this Xserve. Currently I am using a 21” SuperMatch SVGA monitor.
Thank to all who have helped.
James
jamescalvin-
The only cards I have found to work reliably in the
G5 XServe are the cheap-arse PCI models. I do not use
my XServe for serious graphics work so I do not know
how it works with other cards.
Can you swap in a known compatible PCI card for
testing purposes?

Kernel panic when I try startx: edited again
I just reinstalled arch (slight mishap yesterday  ) I'm running testing, have installed xorg, kde, ati stuff, etc. When I try to startx I get a "kernel panic not syncing". Has something to do with xorg configeration.
Any ideas :?:
If I just run xorgconfig no panic when I then run aticonfig etc panic.
For the moment I've given up on fglrx and am just trying radeon. the message I get says the system can't find the radeon driver :?:

If you're getting a kernel panic when trying to install, then I'd start with RAM and the installation disks.
RAM: Panther has higher standards for RAM than does 10.2.x; if you have more than one RAM module, take one out (assuming that leaves you with at least 128 MB) and try again. If it panics again, try switching the RAM. As far a brand names go, I prefere Kingston or Azen RAM.
Installation Disks: if they're grey, they won't work. Grey installation disks are packaged with specific Macs, and only contain hardware drivers for that specific Mac. You need the retail version of the disks, which were sold in a black box. There are four CDs in the set, three of which are for installing the OS (the fourth contains Developer Tools). The three OS disks are black with a large silver X in the middle.
Good luck!

Kernel Panic when I try to install OSX 10.3. Can anyone help?
I bought this iMac recently. It has OS 10.2.? installed and OS 9.1. When I try to install OS 10.3 I get a Kernel Panic when it reboots to start the installation. I ran the Norton Disk Doctor it had over in OS9 -- said it fixed some things and now ok but I still get a Kernel Panic trying to install Panther. I just want to re-format the whole computer with 10.3 and get rid of 9. How can I do that?
Thanks.KeepItSimple:
