Kernel panics whenever RAID card conditions battery
I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running 10.5.8, with an Apple RAID card with M-2.0.5.5 firmware. This has two Seagate Barracuda drives attached, formatted as RAID 0, and this RAID 0 is the OS drive.
Periodically, the RAID card conditions the battery. In the past I've been able to work while this was happening but, about three weeks ago, the conditioning started and the computer became completely unusable: there were kernel panics every minute or two and, on restarting, the report showed "AppleRAIDCard Controller Panic...". I eventually gave up and left it alone until the conditioning finished, and it's worked fine since.
This situation has just started again. It's only three weeks since the last conditioning; the gap was 6 weeks last time; and 12 weeks the time before that. Is the battery failing? Does that explain the constant AppleRAIDCard Controller-initiated kernel panics?
I didn't set up this computer and could happily live without RAID but this OS drive now has lots of software installed, much of which needed to be authorised by challenges/responses and explanations to software manufacturers as to why it was being reinstalled etc. Reformatting and reinstalling everything again would be a major PITA.
Is it possible to move the drives to a software RAID 0 without reformatting them? Is this likely to be less problematic than the Apple RAID card?
Thanks in advance,
Steve = : ^ )
I'd just like someone to comment on whether they think the battery alone could be responsible for unending KPs whenever the controller is conditioning the battery, or whether the card might be faulty.
I wonder about both points.
Did some searching, and there are several reports of other users with battery problems.
For some, the battery fixed the problem, for others, no remedy.
One example:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=439873
For troubleshooting, identifying the source through eliminating causes related to the symptoms would be a reasonable approach.
Since the KP's occur only during battery conditioning, it places the most suspicion on the battery.
Personally, I see this as most telling.
Since you can't run without the battery, a replacement is the only way that I can think of to test the battery.
Other possibilities could be firmware related.
Is the card and the MP running the most current firmware?
If the firmware of the card and the MP are up to date, the battery, again, comes to the top of the suspect list.
And, of course, there is always the possibility that a component on card has failed.
Unfortunately, as with the battery, a replacement is needed to test.
I wouldn't move on this point until the battery theory were tested.
Not to dismiss the potential for software involvement, I'm wondering what are the OS X kexts that are involved with the processes leading to the KP's?
Logs in Console may provide some information.
Portions of the KP report immediately after the word "backtrace" also provide the best information.

Kernel Panic Whenever RAID Array is Connected
I have a couple of mirrored 1TB drives set up on my iMac with Disk Utility. I had unplugged all of my drive during the install, so I plugged them back in and my iMac kernel panicked. I have 5 drives, and I finally narrowed it down to either of the RAID drives. I also connected one of them to my MacBook Pro 17", same exact thing happened. I am totally clueless as to what caused this. For the time being I have downgraded another one of my systems to the most recent version of Leopard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have the exact same problem with 2 x 1TB IOmega USB drives.
These drives have been working perfectly under Leopard, with software RAID1 (Disk Utility)
Now after upgrading to Snow Leopard, my machine gives me a kernel panic.
I've tried on both an old 1.6 ghz Core Duo mini, and a fairly new 2ghz mini (july 2009)
Both result in the same error, something like this :

Help! Kernel panic whenever I plug in my new 2TB WD My Passport
Hello everyone,
I have a 27 inch iMac that is still under AppleCare. When I plug in my 2 TB WD My Passport external drive, I get the screen that says, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." When the computer restarts, if I don't eject the drive fast enough it will display the same message. I have no other problems with connecting external devices. I have even tried a friend's 1TB WD Passport external drive and it worked perfectly fine. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I have copied the kernel panic from the system diagnostic report below. Thanks in advance!

If it's not that, then it might be something in the chipset of the WD external enclosure that doesn't play well with the Mac.
If you look around in Sys Prefs>Login Items, anything there from WD? Also look in /Library/Startup Items and there and in /System/Library/ for Launch Daemons or Launch Agents.

My powerbook keeps giving me kernel panic messages. The culprit of this is a loose airport card (probably due to my computer being dropped). I took it into the Apple store yesterday and the guy said that my best bet was trying to stick a piece of plastic to hold the card in. I did this, and it still came loose and continued to give me the kernel panic. He said my only other option would be to buy a new computer. I find it hard to believe that there isn't a fix for this. Does anyone know if there is a fix for a loose airport card, or am I really out of luck like the Apple store guy said?
if reinstalling the card did not work, could be either loose or damaged card socket as cornelius mentioned.
you may want to consider taking it to service provider in your area who could open up the case to see exactly what is causing the problem: some loose screws/cables inside, damaged socket etc.
some service providers do not repair laptops though and send them to Apple anyways:
http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
if it is just some loose connections inside, you may be charged for labour to fix it.
if the socket is damaged, it can be replaced as a separate part, as a guess it takes couple of hours labourparttaxes
and could be close to $300.
problem possibly could be caused by the bottom case, where the socket is connected on the inside. -
Kernel Panic's under certain conditions
Is there anyone else getting a Kernel Panic anytime iTunes is running concurrently with Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge? Or am I the only lucky one? This is happening with enough frequency such that I am begining to wonder if this v10.4.7 thinks it is now part of the Microsoft family.
Any input greatly appreciated. The latest Panic.Log below:

3. Widgets
Some poorly written widgets for Mac OS X 10.4 access memory in ways that the system was not designed to accept. One such widget that has since been updated to avoid kernel panics is Ministat. If you recently downloaded a widget, try disabling it to see if it makes a difference. To disable a widget under Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.4.1 you can use Widget Manager. With Mac OS X 10.4.2, Apple has created a special widget called Manage Widgets which can be activated by enabling the widget toolbar (hit the + with the circle around it in the bottom left corner). -
I experience a kernel panic whenever I close firefox and have to hard reboot my machine.
I am running Mac OS X 10.7.4 and Firefox 15.0.1 on a Macbook Pro 9,1. Almost every time I close firefox, the computer freezes completely and/or has a kernel panic, and in all situations I have to hard-reboot the machine. I've tried uninstalling other 3rd party apps and have sourced the problem to firefox. When I view the system report of the crash after rebooting, it says that the source of the crash was from a firefox process and something related to Nvidia Geforce. I was wondering if this may be related to the graphics switching on the new macbooks (I have a intel 4000 + a Nvidia 650m), however, I still get crashes when I turn off automatic graphics switching. My other thought was perhaps this problem has to do with hardware acceleration. Unfortunately, I tried disabling hardware acceleration in firefox and it still caused the computer to crash.
I'm happy to hear any suggestions! I don't want to have to switch to another browser, but using firefox 15 in its current state has made my computer unstable and unusable.Which is it, hanging or crashing, or both?

Mac Pro Mountain Lion Kernel Panic Dual Video Cards
I've been getting constant panics since upgrading to Mountain lion on my 2009 Mac Pro.
Worth noting is I have dual GT 120 Video Cards and dual 30" LCDs. Every panic seems to be caused by com.apple.NVDAResman
This computer has been rock solid since 2009 and only after "updating" to Mountain Lion has it become unstable.
Was hoping 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 would fix the issued, but neither have. It's worse than ever. Crashing every day.
Already reinstalled the OS, tested the RAM, etc. No change. Still crashes everyday.
What should I do? It's really eating into productivity...

Xserve RAID card reconditioning battery
Hello,
Does anyone know if there is a LaunchDaemon or script where i can schedule my battery reconditioning ?
It is always starting in the middle of a working day and the performance is then very slow.
Or did anyone tried to disconnect the battery cable an put write cache on ?
Tnx,
HarrySeems to me to be a hardware design fault…
It has a mind of it's own –literarily– it's own internal control logic determines when this happens
– I have not seen any way to 'control it'
– Personally I consider this to be a major design fault…
– Would be OK if could control it
– OR if it had two batteries and could swap between them
– Neither of which seems to be the case…
I could be wrong – but I've never found a way to control it
– Seems to have a habit of choosing the most in-opportune times to recondition it's battery
– if it works at all… -
Hi,
I've been trying to determine whether there are any hardware raid cards with battery backed cache that are supported by Solaris 10 and offer online management and diagnostic utilities. The LSI Logic 320-2x (which is repackaged by Sun) is now supported by the lsimega driver, but there is little to no documentation for it (+broken links on sun.com).
Cards like this usually offer both BIOS-based configuration as well as online utilities. Some cards and the corresponding drivers may be managed using raidctl, but I cannot determine which cards and drivers.
If any body has links to documentation or personal experience that will enlighten me, it would be much appreciated.
Regards,
MichaelI was going to respond with my personal view, but this wikipedia page describes it adequately.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundant_array_of_independent_disks:
"With a software implementation, the operating system manages the disks of the array through the normal drive controller (IDE, SCSI, Fibre Channel or any other). With present CPU speeds, software RAID can be faster than hardware RAID, though at the cost of using CPU power which might be best used for other tasks. One major exception is where the hardware implementation of RAID incorporates a battery backed-up write cache and an application, like a database server. In this case, the hardware RAID implementation flushes the write cache to a secure storage to preserve data at a known point if there is a crash. The hardware approach is faster and limited instead by RAM speeds, the amount of cache and how fast it can flush the cache to disk. For this reason, battery-backed caching disk controllers are often recommended for high transaction rate database servers. In the same situation, the software solution is limited to no more flushes than the number of rotations or seeks per second of the drives. Another disadvantage of a pure software RAID is that, depending on the disk that fails and the boot arrangements in use, the computer may not be able to be rebooted until the array has been rebuilt." -
MacBook pro 8,2 late-2011 after series of kernel panics and video glitches stopped booting
Hello, friends... I am shattered, my MacBook Pro stopped booting today. It all started two days ago, when I came to India and got USB modem dongle from Tata Docomo. It was making Lion kernel panic whenever it was connected to Internet, but had no effect while disconnected or unplugged from the laptop. Then yesterday I had a kernel panic while playing a video in VLC, then while using Skype, and after a while I figured out the pattern, it would crash every time computer switched on the graphic card instead of the on-board CPU graphics. It would also crash with striped blue screen and misplace it horizontally. All this time I was looking for the solution on the internet, and ran two hardware tests, both normal and extended, both showed no issues, tried booting into safe mode getting the striped blue kernel panic screen after the progress bar filled. Resetting the ram also didn't help. Now it will not boot at all, only the hardware test is still working. After the logo screen in normal mode it just goes power off or hangs in grey screen for infinity.
Please, I need your help guys, I'm desperate, went to India for a few months and laptop breaking down almost straight away, and I'm also a dj, so its like a musical instrument to me, that I cannot work without...
Again - MacBook Pro 8,2 Late-2011, 2,4 ghz, 750gb hdd, 4gb ram, ati 1gb graphic card and running Lion 10.7.3, thanks!Try the fixes here, take it back for a warranty call
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3046 -
Hey guys,
Just a quick one, wondering if anyone can have a look at these two logs from today and have any suggestions as to whats up:
Firstly some background, Macbook Pro mid 2009. Upgraded RAM to 4gb using some kingston ram, now it worked perfectly for about a year and then started having kernel panics and was diagnosed as dodgy ram so I sent it back to kingston and they exchanged it. Now I know it's not specifically listed as 'apple compatible' RAM but didn't think that would make a difference. Anyway a year after re-replacing the RAM I'm getting kernel panics again. Done the hardware test and it's not showing any errors so probably gonna go ahead with replacing the ram and hard drive sometime next week anyway.
Any insight into these:

Any insight much appreciated!I've uninstalled the blackberry leftover drivers that were still lurking and deleted any remains of parallels (i hope).
I've got the rember software and will run it overnight to test the ram! any suggestions on number of cycles?
I know when I called originally (about a year ago) when one of the kingston modules originally went faulty that it wasn't 'officially supported for macs' but as far as I was aware rams ram and it either works or it doesn't!
Either way I've got 'apple compatible' crucial ram on its way so hopefully that will sort it, just noticed randomly it started doing kernel panics whenever it's not even under any load (originally it seemed to do it when the Mac went crazy with youtube/flash stuff on the web you could hear fans kick in and it get warmer then it'd kernel panic) but now it seems to just be able to do it when cpu usage is minimal and just a word document in the background.
This was the latest one I got earlier today:

Is anyone else seeing this?
The affected process is random (or so it seems) which would make sense if it's a bug in the network code since that (at least on other BSDes) is run by a software interrupt independent of the userland.
There is a previous thread about issues in 10.5.5 and 10.5.6 with the same piece of code in route.c here.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1812607
http://openradar.appspot.com/6444043
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=615335
From those threads and other posts I've found on Google regarding the route.c crashes, the consensus seems to be to not run a bittorrent client (or the bundled Apache 2 in Leopard) and that this is a "feature" of Mac OS X.
For what it's worth, this computer is connected directly to the Internet, is part of IPv6 internet via 6to4 and use the Airport card in Ad-Hoc mode to share the Internet connection with other (Apple) devices.
This particular kernel panic happened just days after swapping the harddrive and reinstalling SL from scratch. The only software installed after the OS was reinstalled is Adium, Spotify and Transmission BT.Here's another Bittorrent-induced kernel panic on a new Core i7 iMac.

2010 Mac Pro with Apple RAID card - "Drive carrier 00:03 removed"
I've got a 2010 Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card and 4 internal identical Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB drives inside.
I've never had a problem with the RAID card (either battery or in operation) except for one thing:
Almost every time I shut the machine down (which I try to do as rarely as possible), it keeps losing Drive 3, the spare.
(See RAID Utility event log snippet below.)
[I wish I could understand why this Apple RAID card keeps losing the spare across power-cycles/reboots, but I digress.]
So I just adopted it as the spare and it spawns the rebuild and many hours later, everything's fine again.
... until the last time I rebooted (Jan. 2nd).
After the usual "I lost the spare" message upon login, it began the rebuild.
But this time, about 11 1/2 hours later the rebuild stopped and RAID Utility reported "Drive carrier 00:03 removed".
Bay 3 is now missing in the Controller view.
I powered off the system last night, and left it off overnight. Today I took all the drives out, blew the dust off and reseated them.
Same thing. Drive 3 is still missing, and now the rebuild task aborted.
The drive bay location shouldn't matter, right? Can I swap the Bay 3 drive with the Bay 4 drive?
I figure one of two things would happen:
(1) It will report Bay 3 as being there but Bay 4 as being missing, same situation as is now. Meaning the problem is in the Bay 3 spare drive.
(2) It will report Bay 3 as being missing (despite a 'good' drive being present) and Bay 4 will be the (unattached) spare, and the RAID set will be unviable. Meaning the problem is with the drive bay itself, not whatever drive is plugged into it.
If "Drive carrier removed" is trying to tell me the disk is bad, why do I not see any log messages about it? I suppose a spare that never gets used could go bad from lack of use, but ... no messages at all?
Hesitant to plunk down $160 on a new spare disk if the present one isn't actually dead ...

I was talking about this.
This looks like a RAID 5 setup without the parity to me. I would said it basically a RAID 0.
Also you metioned "I guess that previous spare must really have gone 'bad', despite having never been used! "
I wiped everything out, I selected the 3 disks and clicked on "Create RAID Set" with RAID5 selected and the "Use unassigned drives as spares" option checked. The 3rd disk has always been marked as the spare ever since then. You do not have a choice to create a "RAID5 setup without the parity". If I wanted a RAID0 I would have chosen a RAID0! raidutil now says
% sudo raidutil list raidsetinfo
Total Avail

RS1 RAID 5 1,2,3,4 5.23TB 0.00MB No tasks running
Every time the system would 'lose' Drive 3 on boot, I would just keep rebooting until it was 'found', and then manually re-assign the now-'floating' drive as the spare - and the RAID would rebuild.
There was never a problem until the day that prompted this post - when it would not find Drive 3 no matter what I did. I turned the Mac Pro off for several hours until the drives had all cooled down and it still did not find the drive. I left the machine on but unmounted the degraded volume until I got the new replacement drive.
I really don't understand what you are getting at. It's like you are trying to tell me I set it up as a 4-drive RAID5 with no parity(!) and that I was in grave danger because one of the disks was gone. The actual RAID contents (spread across Drives 1, 2 and 4) were never in danger, unless a 2nd disk had failed while the spare was not seen by the Apple RAID card. I wasn't too worried about that happening. -
having problem with my xserver g5 i just brought i disconnent the raid card to test a next xserver that was beeping and when i reinstall it in the next one it started to beep loud can anyone can tell me what i do wrong please
I came into the office this morning and the RAID Utility reports the Battery Status as "Charged" and now the Overall Status is "Good".
I don't know when it changed from Conditioning to Charged, but it has now been approx 19 hours since the install of the RAID card and battery so the charge time is definitely less than 72 hours.
Makes me think my interpretation of the FAQ page may have been correct.
If so it would be nice if the FAQ page answered the question about how long it takes to charge the battery. Where does one submit FAQ page improvement suggestions? -
Kernel Panics 10.8.4
I have just started having kernel panics whenever I am running anything on my Mac Pro that requires 3D acceleration (i.e. World of Warcraft, Heroes of Newerth, Guild Wars 2). I can run for hours without any problem with just Firefox, iTunes, etc... but 5-10 minutes after launching a 3D game the computer locks up for a moment and shuts off. I have already run a RAM check in Single User mode and everything checked out with "ok"s across the board. I did crack open my case and found it was rather dusty. I cleaned that out but even after attempting to let the system cool down after that, it had two kernel panics while trying to boot up before finally coming online. I'm currently looking at a temperature monitor and everything seems to be running at below 40C except for the RAM which is running at 64C for the first two modules, and 55-57 for the other four. The Northbridge Chip is at 63C.
I'm guessing the problem is probably with the graphics card or the RAM somehow... or I read overheating can cause these panics to protect the system. I'm too scared to try anything else to see if my cleaning has fixed it because of the additional panics since restarting after that. Please, any advice would be appreciated!
Panic report is as below:
