Kernel Panics with new security update

Anyone else having this problem? Downloaded the new security update, installed, restarted (took a very long time to restart) the computer rebooted itself and then began to kernel panic every time I booted it. Works fine if I boot into windows so seems to be something the new software update broke. Anyone else having similar issues?

Well I am having a weird problem. This is my first post so I am not sure if I need to make a new post, but here goes.
I installed the Security Update 2007-005 (PowerPC) on May 31 on my MacBook Pro. I can't be certain but I think since I installed it I have a spinning ball and can't do much of anything. Like something is bogging it down. It will eventually stop but will start again the minute I do anything... something is just not right. I have tried all troubleshooting techniques but found it is not possible to even try them.
Safe Boot... It automatically decides to shut down before it gets to the safe boot screen.
Disk Utility... Restarting off the disk, yes, but when I run the program I get "could not unmount disk"
Trying to run fsck -y, in single user mode (command s)... I get "Volume is journaled. No checking performed. Use the -f option to force checking.
I have no idea what to do next. I guess I will try to reinstall my system off my disks. Does anyone have any ideas... please help this is taking up so much time.

  • Tiger going crazy on iBook G4 with new security update and Safari 3

    I'm running 10.4.11, 1.42GHz PPC G4 with 1.5GB of SDRAM.
So I ran software update where I noticed new Security Update and Safari update.
I tried to run the new Safari - Nothing, it's dead, no action! ( could hear hard drive but no action)
Today I tried running 'Software Update', it's spinning it's wheels, over and over again.
I'm sure Apple is working on sending me an email, as they got the skinny when the program crashed I forwarded the system message.
So a bit frustrated hear, I'm using Safari and getting to know Camino.
The Biggest frustration is that 'Mail' will not boot up so I use my internet to check mail, bummer.
So lets hope we get some info soon.

If you are operating behind a proxy server, maybe this will help.
With regards to crashes from behind a proxy server, I came up with a work around!
I have been using Automatic proxy configuration using a .pac file. That seems to be causing the error.
After inspecting the .pac file, and following the if, ifelse path, at the very bottom is a proxy address and port for unclassified connections. Mine looks like this
    proxy.sun.ac.za Port :####
I have put this into my System Preferences for all connection types, manually. This is found under, System Preferences: Built-in Ethernet: Configure Manually...
Then you need to go through the box on the left and check each box. As you do so, paste the default proxy address and port in the open boxes on the right.
Hope this work around helps. My Quicktime is still not working for my older .avi files.

  • Kernel panics since last security update

Since installing the last security update I am getting frequent kernel panics and crashes.
Usually related to accessing remote samba shares while running Parallels VMs
    Anyone experience the same thing?
Using Leopard 10.5.5 with the latest updates. I have ran the hardware check and everything is fine, this only started after the last security update.
2 for 1 question: Does anyone know how to uninstall the latest security fix??

Yes, wipe the system and re-install.
Or, may be able to repair this with the 10.5.5 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Kernel Panic After latest security update

    Hello All!
I just recently reopened up my G4 to rip a few cds to my new 80gb iPod and I figured that Id do the security updates... bad choice . After applying the latest mac update it said it required a restart, after restating I was dumped into a Kernel Panic

it then has a stack trace... Is there anyway to fix this? Thank you in advance!

I did find that first web site you linked to and I was trying to get into either safe mode or single user mode but I cant seem to get into either, this Kernel panic starts before I can get into either... I have not removed the harddrive yet and as per my tag I do have a 867 MDD somewhere in storage that I could go run and get and swap the harddrives out to see if it is perhaps a hardware issue? I have not attempted moving out the ram as I do not have any spare DDR laying around, however it is in a 2x512 configuration I will try swaping the sticks around. There is also a USB 2.0 card that is installed (however I never had it configured) I will also try removing that and reporting back. Thank you for your help.

reinstall the original video card to install leopard
That should work fine. In my case, that wasn't an easy option because the Mac arrived from Apple with the upgraded card in place and my client would have had to buy a video card just to install the OS.
It's been years since I had a version of MacOS that required inits for specific machines. It caught me by surprise, but was totally understandable. The machine was made after Leopard was released and it did come with a proper DVD with the required video drivers, but my client had misplaced it. His Family Pack Retail DVD was the version of MacOS that was on the shelf at Amazon at the time and normally this isn't a problem for anyone because they are always out-of-date and require the user to bring up the OS to the latest version.
I suppose Apple replaced the DVD with an newer version because of the special order status of the machine.

  • Lost home connection with new "security update"

So I downloaded the most recent Security Update last night (9/26/06) and when my computer restarted, it would not actually connect to my network in my condo "linksys" but will connect to someone else's around me "Netgear". I get the good ol yellow light when I check the network in System Preferences now (for linksys).
    Help....please.
(p.s. - despite this-day-in-age, I have no password settings for linksys)

I want to make sure that the device is up and running for you without any issues. Are you having issues with Wi-Fi internet connection or with the 4G LTE internet access on the phone? Please keep me posted.

  • Kernel Panic with AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement on Macbook Pro Retina 15

    Hello,
I'm getting Kernel Panic with grey "Death Screen". This happends 5 times. On 5-th of January (3 times) and on 8-th (2 times).
All the cases according to Consol reports have similar symphtoms:
    panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff802aeb7e75): Kernel trap at 0xffffff7face2557e, type 13=general protection, registers:
    Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

This line (besides many others) is different in reports
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: WindowServer (2 times)
And other one quicklookd, WebProcess and Web Service.
I sent all reports to Apple Support as MAC OS asked me about. BTW I can publish them again here.
Firstly, may be it's possible to figure out the reason of panics: Is this the SW or HW problem?
Guys at service told me to bring Macbook AS IS. But if this is the SW problem I can clean / reinstall OS etc. myself.
And (after cleaning and/or reinstalling) if the problem is in HW I'll be getting panics again. So I can bring to service Macbook with new history of panics.
So what is the probability of HW problem in such a case. When all reports point to the same .kext file.
    Thank You in advance.
    Cheers,
    Victor
P.S.: Computer is new, I didn't change configuration, OS etc.
Installed programs under question: m3tag (Tag Editor - recompiled by somebody from WIndows program with some similar to CrossOver env.)
    Adobe FlashPlayer Plugin

    Thanks for reply.
Exactly - MP3Tag Wineskin port. I also think that here is the reason. This port is up-to-date (10.8.2 compatible) but very inacurate - I found  many garbage in MP3Tag package.  And the original Windows program is very old - 1984(?).
I removed this program from computer and I have to get a try for some period of time.

  • New Security Update - Airport no longer works. Help ?

    Hey all
this morning I ran various software updates: itunes, safari and the new security update. From that moment onwards, I cannot access the internet using my MacBook (about a year old, running Mac OS X 10.4.11). I normally use Firefox to access the net, but neither that nor Safari work now.
I know my internet works as I can access it wirelessly using my work laptop and my desktop.
But when I try to access my broadband using my macbook:
    a) the "waves" on the airport all remain light-shaded
    b) I receive an error message saying " There was an error joining the Airport network 'Zyxel' " (the router is zyxel).
If anyone has any thoughts on how to reset the connnection back to how it was, I'd be EXTREMELY grateful.
    thanks
    B

Having the same problem, but only with my Mac. PC and iPhone continue to work fine. Must be security update related. Is there a way to uninstall the security update?

So, did anyone else SUDDENLY get Kernel Panics with the 10.4.7?

    Hi, Anapharya.
No kernel panics on my Macs after 10.4.7 Update.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.

This is really bugging me, I got the new i7 MBP last Thursday and since then I've had four kernel panics.

Has anyone else been having kernel panics with the i7s?
Any suggestions on what it could be or what I should do?
From the looks of it it has something to do with the graphics card, maybe the auto switching feature.
    Thanks in advance.

Anyway, I contacted support and they say this is the first they've heard of a problem like this and want me to do an archive & install, then an erase & install.
I am loathe to do either of those as I spent three days moving data over and installing my apps. Plus the fact that I got my first KP early on leads me to believe it's not a software issue and I'll wind up just going through all that to get to the ole switcheroo with Apple anyways.
Ummm, no one here can speak for Apple, but I strongly suspect they're going to want to do that before calling it a hardware problem. And after some period of time, it's quite probably going to be a repair instead of a possible replacement at this time. Not sure how that sits with you . . . .
Also, if you're confident of your installations (OS and added software), simply do a clone to an external HD (using SuperDuper, CarbonCopyCloner, or similar), do the A&I and/or E&I, then you'll know if it's soft/hardware, and then you can decide if you want to clone the exact same OS/software back to the MBP.

  • Is the New Security Update Working on My Computers?

I have noticed that the XProtect.plist on 2 different computers have never updated since I installed the new Security Update on June 1. I have an Apple Care Product Specialist trying to figure it out.
But, I ran across this (pasted below) today when checking Console, and if anyone can dechiper logs, maybe some independent analysis will tell me why I'm not getting the "MacDefender" scan this security update was supposed to provide (and why the subject .plist  has never updated since installing the Security Update on 2 10.6.7 Intel iMacs 4 days ago).

Run this command in the Terminal app, you'll need your admin password at the prompt:
    sudo /usr/libexec/XProtectUpdater
    Then, run this AppleScript:
set a to do shell script "defaults read /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta Version"
set b to do shell script "defaults read /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta LastModification"
    display dialog "Safe Download definitions are at version " & a & "," & return & "last updated on " & b
which should show something like this (the time might be different):
If you're not seeing version 5, then manually download and reinstall the update.
