Kernel reboots right after "Probing EDD"

When booting, the kernel starts to initialize but right after "Probing EDD" it fails, rebooting instead.  If i use the kernel option "edd=off" the "Probing EDD" line doesn't show, but still the kernel reboots at that point.  I'm convinced this is not an EDD-related problem, but trouble with whatever comes next.  FWIW, some googling turned up the idea of trying "hpet=disable" but that made no difference. Tried loading the alternate kernel, got same thing.
What should the kernel be printing after "Probing EDD"?
Potential suspects for the original cause of this problem: i updated with pacman -Syu two days ago which provided a new kernel (2.6.29?), and i've been fiddling with trying to get sound to work again.  Maybe i screwed up the kernel modules or some file in /etc/modules.d/.   Though this is a laptop, i turn it off only rarely.  It's a Gateway 6860FX.

Hi i have the same trouble of EDD and reboot, only way for fix (this happen when the last kernel upgrades) is go to arch, and make again the pacman -S kernel26. My fstab is

  • Kernel Panic right after start up on my PowerBook G4

I get the standard kernel panic message quite frequently after I start up my PowerBook. I have used the Disk Utility (software), and the Hardware Utility to check the system hardware, and both say all is well.
I would appreciate any ideas on how to fix this.
    Thanks,
    Shawn

Well, the "erase and install" feature should do the trick. That does essentially what I was thinking by having you format the drive. No other tricks needed, just update as soon as you're done using the latest combo updater available for your OS version via the software update option in the apple menu.
    Happy installing!

  • Kernel Panics right after AppleCare Help

    Greetings All,
So, my PBG4 1.25 w/ 1Gig ram failed on me awhile back--turns out the logic board needed to be replaced. Luckily, I was still covered under AppleCare. They replaced my logic board, but since I've had it returned, I get repeated Lock-Down and Kernel Panics up the wazoo! :*( ANYONE HELP? Dr. Smoke, I'd appreciate your expertise here. Thanks for taking the time, all.

Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25Ghz, 1GIG Ram, New Logic board per AppleCare

Hi, sbguy72. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. What specific model of PowerBook G4 (PBG4) do you have? Is this the 15-inch FireWire 800 (FW8000) model that came default with a 1.25 GHz processor, or are you running a an older PBG4 with a processor upgrade? Why I ask will become clear later.
    2. Your panic logs indicate the following:2.1. All are 0x300 panics, e.g.
    Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300 - Data access
    and
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xFFFF0003): 0x300 - Data access
The 0x300 (Data Access) exception indicates the processor could not perform a data memory access. Potential causes, in general terms, include RAM problems, hard disk corruption, and programming errors.
"Programming errors" in this case can include invalid instructions and violations of protected memory, however it is often difficult to differentiate a programming error from a RAM or hard disk problem since the latter two issues can cause a valid instruction to appear invalid.
2.2. In the kernel-loadable modules section of the backtrace, the logs are citing kernel extensions related to storage, primarily your hard drive. This is indicated by the following lines in various logs:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.iokit.IOStorageFamily(1.5)@0x4a0000
    and
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.driver.KeyLargoATA(1.1.0f1)@0x63d000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOATAFamily(1.6.0f2)@0x4bd000
    com.apple.iokit.IOATAFamily(1.6.0f2)@0x4bd000
This is where my question about your PB G4's model comes in:
    • The reference to "KeyLargo" implies the IC (integrated circuit) that controls I/O in certain PowerBook models. In those models (PB G4 with 667, 800, 867, or 1 GHz processors) the KeyLargo IC is responsible for hard drives, USB, Audio, Wireless LAN, modem, and the PMU.
    • The PBG4 FW800 that shipped with a 1.25 GHz processor does not use the KeyLargo IC. Instead, it uses the later Intrepid IC, which integrates both memory and I/O control.
I'm not sure if the PBG4 FW800 still uses the KeyLargoATA driver with the Intrepid IC. This jumped out at me so I thought I should mention it.
However, in either case, the panic logs are also flagging IOATA-related devices, generally hard drives although this can also include optical drives.3. Overall the kernel-loadable modules above seem to imply a hard-drive related problem, e.g. your Mac's hard drive, or an attached external drive. They could also imply a continuing logic board problem. The 0x300 again implies RAM, hard drive, or programming issues.
    4. What were you doing when the panics occurred?
    5. To cut to the chase, see my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
Despite the clues above, bear in mind that my FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
    Good luck!

  • [SOLVED] Probing EDD then system reboots ???

I read the user who recently asked about this same problem, but i could not solve it.
What happens is, I try to boot and it, stops on Probing EDD and then reboots on me.
I put in the bootloader and did:
arch root=/dev/sda4 (my root partition) and it loaded up.
    I tried a /sbin/lilo -v and it give me this error: Fatal: raid_setup: stat("/dev/hda")
I don't have a raid setup though... not sure what this means.
    I also tried to this:
    arch
    mount /dev/sda4 /mnt
    mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot
    mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
    mount-t proc none /mnt/proc
    mount -t sysfs none /mnt/sys
    chroot /mnt
then tried to run lilo and the same thing happens.
I also tried the Arch fallback and that fails, saying Kernel panic - not syncing. Attempted to kill init!
I found one more thing to try right now...
anyone know what this could be?

Thanks you for the reply. Sorry for the confusion, I fixed my typo's in my previous post's. I use lilo. I am not sure how to copy my config files, I dual boot this computer and right now I can only use windows.
    My lilo config says:
boot=/dev/hda   (which is maybe why I am getting this Fatal: raid_setup: stat: ("/dev/hda") error? It tries to boot up /dev/hda4 as root from the lilo.conf. Should I try switching them to /dev/sda4?
I have been running Arch for quite awhile now, and nothing like this has ever happened. I installed it years ago.
I tried the wiki articals on Boot Recovery, almost all of them. Everytime I try to run lilo it gives me that same error.
    Ok.. I got somewhere!!
I just went into my /etc/fstab and /etc/lilo.conf and switched all the /dev/hda to /dev/sda and I am now in the system without the FILESYSTEM CHECK FAIL error. I still cannot boot though. But... I can now copy my config files here...
    Here is my lilo.conf
    # /etc/lilo.conf
    boot=/dev/sda
    append="devfs=nomount"
    # This line often fixes L40 errors on bootup

I am very sorry for my spelling, because I feel somebodies presents, who playin with me.
Final question Do I need some antivirus Mac compatable which is update paches, service packs? How to map defolt documents folder not to a local, but to external USB?
Esquse me for a lot of questions, but I am beginner in MAC, and I LOVE it!
PS. Good news. Looks like Safari came back! Somebody, probably allredy helping!
But my interface qute different from original – so something still wrong!

Didn't really read much at all of your post. Much, much too long, irrelevant details and & no paragraphs.
Can't use time machine due to corruptness
Post over here -> Mac OS X v10.6 - Snow Leopard forum
About my macbook and apple ID how can I upgrade my Macbook from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 with out all the permissions being changed and corrupt??
Same as above. Post in the correct forum.
Need to gain access to my apple Id that would be a great start

  • System hangs on reboot/shutdown after kernel upgrades

I've been experiencing the problem that, whenever pacman upgrades the kernel, the system hangs on reboot or shutdown.  It only happens on the first reboot/shutdown after a kernel upgrade.  I've noticed it consistently for a while now.
    To reboot, I issue:
    # reboot
    To shutdown, I issue:
    # shutdown -h now
I should also mention that I typically reboot after kernel upgrades because hotplugged storage devices (USB, SD) fail to be detected unless the system reboots.  That is, devices plugged in during the upgrade remain usable, but plugging in something new appears in /dev.  There may be an obvious reason for it that I'm missing, but it's never bothered me enough to look into it.  Not sure if this and the reboot/shutdown issue are related, though.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

When Apple Hardware Test says there is a problem, there definitely is a problem.
But like many diagnostics, it does not catch everything.
It can increase your confidence that you do not have gross flaws. The Hardware problems that remain may be more subtle ones.

  • [Solved] KDEmod 4.2.3, Xserver/KDM crashes right after start

Hey, I already described my problem in a different topic, but since there was no one actually having that same problem I thought I rather open my own topic here.
Since I updated KDEmod to 4.2.3, I can't login anymore. I see the Xserver starting and have these weird "graphic bug" lines as usual, but then it just hangs there instead of loading KDM. After a few tests I found out, that deleting the xorg.conf solves the problem and I can login again as usual. The problem for me is that I need the xorg.conf because of my Wacom tablet and also because I want to disable the tapping of my touchpad. Maybe that can be done outside of xorg.conf, but at least the Wacom part can't (as far as I know).
So, I'll just post my xorg.conf and the log of /var/log/Xorg.0.log, if you need anything else, tell me.

I already looked up the "signal 11" error message but didn't find anything helpfull. And I tried to make a "minimal" xorg.conf with only the touchpad and the Wacom properties, but then the Xserver complained that there is no screen set. So if someone could help me minimize the xorg.conf, that would maybe be enough if there are no other solutions.

Ok, I have no idea why, but the Wacom tablet gets recognized properly (it seems) by X. Still there are two problems I'd like to solve, one being the fact that I have a 16:10 monitor, but the tablet is 4:3. With xorg.conf I could set it right (Option Keepshape), but how can I do that without the conf file? Also, how can I disable touchpad tapping without the xorg.conf?

  • Kernel26 2.6.26.3-1: Probing EDD [SOLVED, like]

    Hi,
After the upgrade to kernel26 2.6.26.3-1 the boot process stops at the kernel message "Probing EDD...". The situation gets scary as I discover that livecds like MiniMe and Knoppix refuse to boot too. Thanks to another box (not yet upgraded) found about kernel option edd=off. I edited edd=off first into GRUB command line; now the system is back to normal, though during the boot process kernel complains a lot about this or that (sata3) undetected, relinked, etc. Is my situation safe or there are proper measured to be taken?
    My /boot/grub/menu.lst:

A bit of additional information: after the upgrade EDD failure shows on the fallback kernel as well as on the current (2.6.26.3-1) kernel. Which means that some other piece of software/configuration is to blame.
A post here suggested a syslinux trouble; I've tried pacman and discovered that syslinux has never been installed on my system. So my Arch is supposed to run without it. I don't want to experiment in the dark - any suggestions?

  • Can't connect to the internet right after boot up

Hey guys, I have an interesting problem in which if I try to use internet right after boot up (via scripts) I can't resolve host names. However, if I try to use the internet right after boot up manually I can resolve host names. I had this problem with a script but I've since rewrote it to work around the problem; however I now seem to have this problem with openVPN and I need this to work. I'll use openVPN as my primary example but the situation was the same for my script.
Basically, openVPN starts up via systemd and it can't resolve my server's host name. Even 18 hours later. I have 'resolv-retry infinite' in my conf file which as I understand says 'if you can't resolve the host name keep trying to resolve it indefinitely'. I left my computer on overnight and openVPN still could not connect to my server, despite me being able to ping it, have MySQL get data dumps and replicate from it and other software being able to resolve the server's host name. If I restart openVPN, then it works! I rebooted the computer and let it try for a few minutes to connect and it couldn't. I restarted openVPN manually and it resolved the server's host name, 5 minutes after the computer booted up even though it couldn't connect on it's own the previous night.
Here's openVPN's status as of this post:

Anyone have any idea what could be going on? It seems to me that when a program starts up it takes a snap shot of the current network status and it then uses it, even if it's 10 minutes later and the network has been fully loaded/configured, the program uses that snap shot and can't connect to the DNS.

'Requires=network.target' wasn't in it so I added it but nothing's changed. I've left it in because openVPN does require network.
As I said, I had this problem with a script so I don't think it's anything specific to openVPN. I had a weird occurrence this morning however. When I started the computer up this morning  openVPN worked just fine. However when the computer rebooted openVPN couldn't resolve the host address again.

  • Audio stops working right after login

Hi everyone, I have a macbook pro 13inch mid 2009 running mac osx 10.7 lion. Few weeks ago the audio stopped working but after few moments and 2 reboots it started to work fine again. Now are 2 days that the problem came back. I tried to reboot multiple times, to reset the nvram and pram, to use headphones (they dont work either) and to kill the process coreaudiod. Still nothing! I know that it is not a hardware problem since the sounds stops working just right after I login (the sound at the start works and on the login screen the audio controllers still emit the sound), the only sound that seems work after the login is the sound of the trash folder when I empty it (weird isnt it?). I know that a osx reinstallation would probably solve the problem but I dont have time for that right now and I dont want to risk to lose some file. Does any of you have any solution?

    Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    Best.

Did the battery run out of power?  If not, try doing a Reset to "reboot" the iPod

  • DVD tray closing right after opening.

    Hi, everybody!
I just bought a sata DVD recorder and I'm having some problems with it. During the startup, I receive the following message repeatedly:
    ata4: hard resetting link
ata4: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
    ata4.00: configured for UDMA/100
    ata4: EH complete
    ata4.00: exception Emask 0x100 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6
    ata4: hard resetting link
Then, when I try to open the tray, it closes right after opening (either by pressing the eject button or using the command line). Even with only one second, I managed to insert a disc, just to see if the system would recognize it. The DVD was read normally, but I almost broke the disc trying to insert it on the drive. First, I thought it could be a problem with the drive, so I replaced it with another model, but the problem persisted. I have dual boot with Windows XP and the problem is not happening in that OS. I don't know what kind of information would be useful to provide. My system is up-to-date and I tried both a Samsung drive and a LG (which is the current one).
    Thanks.

  • Yosemite upgrade, right after entering my account password, a file starts loading before my desktop appears. (I see a download bar as if a file is loading).  Never saw that before Yosemite. I have a Macbook Air.

Some multiple issues since Yosemite install...working them out.  But I am puzzled by this.  Never witnessed loading of files before desktop since my Windows days!  Is this normal?  I am especially curious because right after upgrade, I had, and resolved an issue with DownLite that I did not know I had and somehow possibly got 'awakened' with Yosemite.  Want to be sure all is good....
    Thanks!

p.s.  ......this happens EVERY TIME after a reboot; but NOT after signing back on after putting my mac to sleep.

  • Kernel Panic Immediately After Full Time Machine Backup

Hi, after I reinstalled my OS from a previous Time Machine backup, I've been getting a kernel panick:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff80005418bf): "Process 1 exec of /sbom/launchd failed. errno 88"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1699.32.7/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c:3546
    Here's my specs:
    - OS: Went from Leopard 10.5.8 to Lion 10.7.5. (Reinstalled OS X from default installation disc then reinstalled OS X from a 10.7.5 backup; Was having trouble booting with 10.5.8)
    - Hard Drive: 2008 Intel Core Duo
    - RAM: 4GB installed
Any ideas? I've already tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM. It occured right after I installed the Time Machine backup, when it tells you to restart your computer. I was having previous boot problems where my Mac just wouldn't boot, that's why I reverted to 10.5.8. That was working perfectly fine, until I restarted... Then the never ending gray startup screen popped up again.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    - Formatted my HD. Then did a clean install of mountain lion.
That's usually overkill.  Just installing a fresh version of Lion (or upgrading to Mountain Lion), without disturbing anything else, will fix 99% of problems with OSX.
    - Tried to restore my documents manually but got a lot of rights-issues,
The user account you set up wasn't recognized as being the same one as on the backups.  It's a slightly different cause, but see the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
    - Tried to restore my TM backup by booting from Mountain lion 10.8 bootable disk, trying to restore to 10.7.5.
Do you mean an InstallESD.dmg?  If so, that should work, but I don't recall if I've done it lately, and that may have updated your Recovery HD to the Mountain Lion version.  Do you have a Lion version you can use instead?  If you do, erase the whole disk (not just the OSX partition), then restore the Lion backup.
Does your Recovery HD work?  If so, that's the easiest -- just start up from it and do the Restore.
If not, and your Mac came with Lion, you should be able to erase the entire disk and use Internet Recovery to do the restore (or download and install a fresh copy of Lion), then use Setup Assistant to transfer your stuff.
