Kernel shutdown cause: 0
My Mac Mini has shutdown suddenly a couple times lately, and both times the logs show
4/21/11 9:25:37 AM kernel Previous Shutdown Cause: 0
I can't find a list of shutdown causes. Can anyone point me to a list of what those numbers mean? Or, can anyone explain what cause #0 is?
I haven't seen anything else in the log that suggests what happened - the only other messages around the time are Apache messages about a syntax error in my vhosts file and a missing DocumentRoot. Those messages are also firing in much older logs when these shutdowns didn't happen, so I don't think they're related. I fixed them anyway though, and we'll see what happens.

I've nothing against workarounds, but don't you believe it would be far most great to actually know these Previous Shutdown cause values?
All over the web, we see people asking "What does Previous Shutdown cause x means?" and other people simply answer "Is the computer heat?" or "Try to reset the PRAM", etc. This is NOT the right way to resolve the problem efficiently! The good way to do it is to understand these "Previous Shutdown Cause" values! It should not be that hard, no?

I've noticed so far that it has done so when I'm not using it. For example I turned it on, work on it for few minutes and it works fine, I walk away for few minutes come back and it's off. And no it's not in standby mode it is completely off. Same thing happened to me few times already. I could be using it for few hours leave it and then when I come back minutes or hours after it's off. I'm getting the Previous Shutdown Cause: -128 code as well... I'm going to speak to apple support tonight and see what can they tell me about it.

My MacBook Pro stopped and started starting up randomly. I went and looked at the console and it said kernel: Previous Shutdown Cause: -60. Please help me I want to make sure this isn't serious.
So I called Apple. Turns out this can sometimes happen (Kernel errors). So they walked me through resetting my kernel and from there they said to just watch it and if it happens again then they will walk me through running some more tests on it.

I am having the random shut down problem, and I am wondering what this:

means.
Specifically the "-72" part
(It appears in the console after I restart after the random shut downs...)I was having the same problem and all of my codes were -72. However, I noticed that when I shut it down myself, the codes were also -72. In other words, there was no distinction between random shutdowns and intentional shutdowns.
Since I got mine back from repair on Wednesday, my codes are now 3 or 0 when I shut it down myself. (I haven't tested this out, but I think they are 3 when I use the power button to shut down, and 0 when I do it via software.) Haven't had a random shutdown since getting it back (knock on wood). Also haven't had a code -72 since.
It would be interesting to know if anyone who ISN'T having random shutdown problems is getting a code -72. -

I did everything, SMC, PRAM, hardware test, reinstall Os X, and all this didn't work!

Hi I'm Phil from Germany,

caused by the Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT after combined Upgrade by Apple.
Started with frozen desktop, and ended with a permanent Kernel Panic after a reeboot.
- Safe mode is not running
- System CD is not running
- Apple Hardware Test is ok.
- tried the newest 7300 firmware update
- I have double checked the RAM, and HDD and disconnected all external equipment several times.

After running my Mac Pro in Target Mode (Fire Wire Connection with my MacBook Pro) I found the Problem-Folder of the 7300 GT:
File: HD/SYSTEM/LIBRARY/EXTENSIONS/NVDANV40HalG7xxx inside my library and erased them......
NOW MY SYSTEM IS RUNNING AGAIN, but I can't run my System-CDs without a kernel panic,
Time Machine runs without the Starfleet-Background, and my second cinema display still doesn't work any more!
After spending several hours in front of my Mac Pro I'm sure that all of my hardware works fine.
NOW I THINK THE PROBLEM IS: I have to change my ROM-Version on my Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT and install the Firmware 3008.
So how does it work and where can I get this Firmware? Or how can I run an Downgrade from 3011 to 3008?
ANY IDEAS ....or similar cases?

I'm sure that an ATI 5770 would solve my Problem...and maybe I could save a lot of my time?
But why I should spend 250 € on a new Graphic Board when the old one isn't broken?
Especially when the problem wasn't caused by me.
I need the old firmware, because my System runs with my GT 7300 after removing the software part listed above. Only one of the firmware components that had been updated won't fit in connection with the newer OS X Versions.
I'm also sure that the Problem must be on the Graphic Board, because my System-CD isn't running while pushing the "c" button. -
"Previous Shutdown Cause" codes?
Hi -- My MacBook has been experiencing some problems.. intermittently shutting itself down, and getting worse & worse until I couldn't even start the laptop up. I believe the problem was a faulty memory module (3rd party, installed myself) -- after replacing the original Apple memory I haven't experienced any problems.
In the system.log, I see this message after a system failure & crash:

Does anyone know what this code means?

MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.7) (previously 2G ram)Sorry to hear that. Hopefully they will just give you a new machine.
Be sure to do the following:
1.) Try to exhibit the problem. Mine shut down three times in the store. The last time it shut off at home, I left it alone, boxed it up and took it in to the genius bar. We booted and viola! It shut down within a couple minutes. Then it shut off during boot. Then we powered it back on and it booted but shutoff within a few minutes.
2.) Open console.app and go to /var/logs/system.log[number]
Click on each one of these logs, hit control-R to load the whole log, and filter on "Previous" for Previous Shutdown Cause. This will show the genius exactly when the problem started and how often.
3.) Be FIRM (not argumentative) and insist on having a new macine. Tell them you are very disappointed in having a brand new machine fail. Talk to a manager if necessary. I didn't have to ask twice. Apple knows this is a problem (unofficially), though the knowledge may vary from Apple Store to Apple Store and genius to genius, BUT it is known and you can reference the vast number complaining on this very board.

Does anyone have any clue what this means? I don't understand computer-speak. My MacBook shuts down unexpectedly if it is left inactive for more than a couple minutes--sometimes the fan is running, most of the time it's not. Sometimes there are active applications, sometimes there aren't. Sometimes it's plugged into the adapter, sometimes it's on battery. Nothing is consistent except the fact that I can't walk away for 2 minutes to answer the phone or get a snack without returning to a shutdown computer.

My Macbook was purchased in mid August 2007, and it runs 10.4.10, so the earlier firmware problems shouldn't be the problem. I would call Apple Support, but I'm in the Middle East, so wherever I call will be long distance. I'm trying to resolve this problem independently. It will be a tremendous inconvenience if I have to travel to Rosh Haayyin (near Tel Aviv) to take it to an authorized repair location...or worse ship it back to the U.S.If you can get it to run long enough, try running your hardware tester. It sounds like it may be going into 'thermal shutdown.' You may have a thermal sensor acting up.

Ever since i tried an old ubuntu live cd with boot camp today, my previous shutdown cause on startup has been listed as 3, it has always been 0 before this.
One thing to note as the ubuntu live cd locked up on restart, so I had to power off, but after several reboots/power offs it still sais:

It results either from pressing the power button and then clicking 'Shutdown', or selecting Shutdown from the Apple menu.
Shut your computer down normally, then power back up and look in Console.
0 and 2 can indicate power loss, usually anything that's negative, like -128 or -60 is abnormal.
If it's heat or battery related, you'll have a different code. The fact that it's showing up as 5 makes me wonder if the computer is experiencing a sudden loss of power...is it a laptop?
A disclaimer: the codes differ slightly between models, I'm speaking from my experience, but Apple doesn't publish the meaning of the codes, so there's not a good way to be certain. -
Does anyone know what the error code "-62" means? Unfortunately the list of published error codes at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1618 doesn't have it.
My Intel Xserve spontaneously reboots when I try to encode 4 videos at once with Podcast Producer / Xgrid. It used to do that when encoding 1 or 2 videos, until I increased kern.maxnbuf and kern.maxvnodes. I got the idea from:

... they mention decreasing this value, but that made things worse for me. The server is a quadcore Intel with 12GB of RAM. When 3 videos are encoding, there is almost 7GB of free physical memory, so I don't see how adding a fourth would matter. After the spontaneous reboot, I see this in my logs:

What does code -83 means? A battery, a power circuit, any sensors, anything ?IIRC -62 is the watchdog timer restart.
The watchdog monitors the system to detect a hangup - some kind of error that prevents the machine from operating properly. If it doesn't detect any activity within a preset time it cycles the power and restarts the machine.
Unfortunately there's little or no documentation I've found as to what, specifically, caused the problem (indeed, I've had machines restart because of this even though they're actively processing requests - or, at least, when none of my other monitoring had detected a problem). Consequently it's going to be a challenge to work out what, specifically, caused the restart.
I do admit, though that the problem seemed to dissipate with later OS versions (my experiences were in the 10.4.[1-5] range and it hasn't been a problem recently. I've had no such issues, for example, with 10.5.anything. -
OS-X 10.5.8 Shutdown Cause -4?
My old white MacBook has started to shutdown unexpectedly. The system log is showing a shutdown cause of -4. I suspect that it's overheating. Can anyone confirm that -4 is a thermal panic, and if not, what does it mean? I've done some digging but can't find an official list of error codes anywhere.
TIAYeah, I'm not sure if Shutdown codes are the same as those, but if they are we might ferret out the problem...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
