Kernel task appears to be making my computer slow
Lately Kernel_task has been appearing a lot in the group of first 5 applications using memory, and immediately making my computer slower, and even getting the internal ventilator make a lot of noise because of the extra work. I am working on the Startup disk space, getting rid of things to make space (what would be the ideal minimum space I should keep unused?), but I don't know if this is related with the kernel_task
Hope I can get any hint on how can I fix this, hopefuly by myself.

Apple mail is making my computer slow
Hi everyone,
Just require some assistance. My apple mail version 5.3 has become really slow lately, and slowing down my whole computer when open and I am working in other apps.
Should I delete the mailboxes and start again?
I currently have 9 different emails coming through, but up until 2weeks ago they have all been running smoothly
Any thoughts and suggestions would be kindly appreciated
Cheers JamesI have been having a similar problem. Mail runs very slowly, with halting typing and lots of beach ball time. Through a process of elimination it looks like the problem is actually the "Contacts". When I quite this all seems fine. I suspect it is something to do with the Cloud because if I disable the Wifi it is also fine. Perhaps teething problems with iCloud. Am running Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro.
While I am here I note that, in what seems to be a separate problem, Evernote seems to have a similar effect on my browsers (lots of beach ball time and very slow). I'll keep multi-tasking to a minimum until the engineers have the Cloud a little better under control I think... Oh and Trusteer Rapport seems to be a disaster as well. Still "security" software has a bad history of mucking everything up, so no surprises there I guess. -
Hi There! I have a question on Kernel Task-Threat. How can I clean my computer? This is the message that persists when cleaning disc--Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
That's a routine message and it means nothing. Don't waste your time repairing permissions unless you know you have a problem that can be solved that way, which you probably never will.

Kernel task is hogging up my computer and fan is running high. What should I do?
I have a mac air 1.6 ghz intel icore 5 with 2 gb memory. Ive been noticing my fan running high and consistantly when my external harddrive is plugged in and just surfing and posting images on facebook. Very basic stuff.
Ive noticed in my activity monitor that kernel task is hogging up a lot of space on my computer. How do I get rid of it? and wth is it?
The fans are running high as I said. I continually reset the SMC and it keeping coming back on high.
Should I be worried about the longevity of my mac air?
What do you experts suggest I do?
Thank You in advance. From this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694

Hi! Been trying to follow a thread about the Kernel-task and slow Mac performance. I did download EtreCheck and ran the report. I am a photographer using LR 4 and Chrome is my main browser. Both Chrome and LR (or PSE, or PS or Xee (a photo viewing app) make my computer run beyond ridiculously slow. I have so much work to do for clients and I get stopped in the middle of editing and cannot move forward because my beloved Mac is having issues. I did go through several old apps and the Application Support and Prefernces and deleted what I could of what I knew "what was what". I would appreciate any help in getting my Mac back on track. Thanks!
- Amy
Problem description:
My Mac is running incredibly sluggish. Chrome continues to lag, and the spinning ball is ridiculous when I am working in LR. I did the EtreCheck and the report is below. I JUST cleared out my LR catalogs and now have just two folders in the catalog from a current wedding I am working on. I will have to consider using separate catalogs for my other genres or even smaller catalogs and just make a catalog for each client. Thanks for looking this over! I am so frustrated.

1.
Back up your Mac prior to making any changes to its file system. Time Machine has not been configured properly To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
2.
You inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.
For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully. Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.
3.
That Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified. Fixing a modified Hosts file requires specific instructions. Apple Support Communities contributor and EtreCheck author etresoft recently added a User Tip discussing that concern, and how to correct it: Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file -

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Kernel task uses 750MBs of RAM since installing Mavericks
Hi All,
I'm new to these forums and could really use some help. After installing Mavericks I noticed my system was running deathly slow even with no applications open. At first I assumed it was indexing so I waited a day. I noticed kernel task, the finder, and icon services agent were using unusual amounts of RAM. Kernel task would go up to 750MBs - it never went that high before. The finder would go up to 300MBs and stay there, even after closing every window. Only quitting and restarting Finder would solve that issue.
I've tried repairing disk permissions. I also tried getting rid of Parallels, since MS finally released OneNote for Mac. This made no difference. I deleted lots of widgets and unecessary applications and possible bloatware (like TechTools Pro). I installed AppCleaner to make sure I got everything. It got most, but definitely not all associated files. I then went into the terminal and did the command that reveals hidden files/folders. I then deleted the daemon for techtools pro just in case.
After all of this, kernel tasks is still using 750MBs and 7.9GBs of RAM is being taken up (other than background processes all I have fired up are Firefox and Skype. I'm at my wits end and would be so grateful for some help.

Kernel Tasks using a lot of bandwidth
My network has been running VERY slow lately. When I checked the Activity Monitor my kernel tasks were perpetually receiving almost 8 GB of info and sending almost 2 GB of info. What can I do to resolve this? I am running a 15" MacBook Pro Retina 2.3 GHz Intel Core 17 with 16 GB memory and a 500 GB SSD drive. I am running Mas OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.
.........BrucePlease read this whole message before doing anything.
Kernel.task using 300% of CPU. MacBookAir mid 2013
Hi
I have a MacBookAir mid 2013, 13-inch.
Starting my mac up after sleep to weeks ago, it behaved very strange and has done it since that day. The fan turns on at full speed, and the Kernel.task operation is taking up 300% of the CPU, or in other words the system is constantly using between 65 - 80 % of the memory, hereby making the Mac very slow, and useless to use for anything. Also at the same time the sound disappeared, in the system configuration there is no output audio to select.
I have tried a lot of things in order to fix this problem, based on things I found in the discussion forum here. I have tried memory cleaner, to remove sound files, to remove plists (as many suggests, but for this MacBookAir6,2.plist, does not exist), I have formatted my hard disk and reinstalled the original OS X system (Mountain Lion), and the upgraded to the current version (Yosimite). But nothing has worked.
Does anyone having the same problem? Or know how to fix this? Anyone been in contact with Apple related to this problem?
Best regards
MortenFirst, get rid of "Memory Cleaner," which is useless at best. Then see below.
The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
☞ high ambient temperature
☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display. -
How can I fix kernel task from using 300% of my CPU?
Everytime I disconnect my MacBook Pro from the wall, Kernel Task uses 300% or more of my CPU and stays that way until I connect the power. I've tryed resetting the System Management Controller, restarting the computer, logging in to another account, and deleted all "bad" files (problem files I've found out via Google). Going to Safe Mode does remove this problem, so it's maybe a program error?
The most likely reason for it is that the battery needs to be replaced.

IPod Nano does not appear in iTunes or My Computer
I have had my Nano for around a year with no problems but since I installed iTunes 7x, my computer has had issues with synchronising my iPod. At first it was that the iPod would appear in Windows explorer but not iTunes. Now it does not appear in either, I simply get the red flashing "Do not disconnect" sign on my iPod screen and nothing happens in windows or iTunes.
I have followed every instruction this site has thus far given me and found one set of instructions that looked promising - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304434 - however once i reached the crutial stage of actually switching the 'terminal services' from disabled to manual, I get an error message on my computer "Error 5: Access denied" and nothing on the site gives any indication of what to do in such an eventuality.
Can someone please let me know if there is another way of getting this thing to synch or perhaps some way of making the computer grant me access to this elusive "terminal services" file??
Anything would be greatly appreciated
Thanks! Adam- however once i reached the crutial stage of

Do you have an administrator account on your computer? If you are not logged in as administrator, do so before attempting to change the to manual. However, I myself am having the same problems with my own ipod.. -
Kernel Task over 400% CPU usage
Hello, I have some questions about the Kernel Task in my activity monitor.
Recently, after a hard disk failure, I have my Macbook Pro wiped and start afresh with Mavericks. All was well, but it slowed down tremendously in the last couple of days. I checked the activity monitor and Kernel Task is always around 400-470%, sometimes it even peaked to 1000+%! I closed all my applications but it is still taking up all my RAM. I cannot work when it is freezing up every 2 seconds. What is the problem?

I'm experiencing issue with MacBook's performance. Kernel Task is using 612 MB of RAM.
Hi Apple Users,
I am new to this kind of forum/support thread. I am experiencing poor performance on my MacBook Pro. One thing I noticed is the kernel task is eating up too much ram. I have no idea how to fix this. Please share your expertise or past experiences in dealing with kind of problem. I would greatly appreciate for any inputs on this kind of issue.
I have some details that I think might help since I read several threads related to my issue.

Kernel task is using many resources on my mac
Hi
I was working on my Mac but is coming very slow sometimes so I found the problem is the kernel task.
Lex I already use the Clean My Mac and since the first time I delete a lot of things I don't even remember how many. Should I format my drive?
About the iCleanMemory so the system will clear the RAM by it self or should I do something different or use another program?
So here is the report:

There is no way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2, and the developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.
Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.
Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
To erase and install Mavericks read: OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks and follow the procedure under Time Machine or other disk migration.
Other problems may exist but those concerns will be rendered moot by erasing your system, which must be accomplished. -
Launching Mail becomes a runaway process and creates a massive memory leak in the kernel task
I have 16gig of ram, my kernel task is currently using 12gig, Mail is no longer responding while using all remaining ram
Mail has been jammed at 100% of one i7 core for about 2 hours now, disk activity is almost nonexistant.
it was running poorly yesterday, rebuilding the mailboxes did not yeild a positive effect
permissions and drive check out
Quicklook is also reporting a lot of bs when finder windows are open:
example:
10/26/13 1:40:20.985 PM quicklookd[14056]: Warning: Cache image returned by the server has size range covering all valid image sizes. Binding: VariantBinding [0x603] flags: 0x8 binding: FileInfoBinding [0x503] - extension: mp3, UTI: public.mp3, fileType: ???? request size:32 scale: 1
I hate the new activity monitor so much, none the less, "Memory Pressure" is pinned
Seeing a whole lot of this in the console as well:
10/26/13 2:57:11.000 AM kernel[0]: SMC::smcReadKeyAction ERROR TM6P kSMCBadArgumentError(0x89) fKeyHashTable=0x0xffffff802ba32000
About to reset the SMC and NVRAM in hopes of a magical unicorn

Mac Pro with 32 GB, and Mail takes about 5 minutes to "start" - well, show the Mail Menu. Then, another few minutes to actually draw the window... but wait, it STILL needs more time to actually show the accounts and mail.
The (stupid) new Activity Monitor show Mail using 12 GB of RAM, and several com plist files also sucking up CPU time and RAM. Why Apple has to dumb-down good information to "Memory Pressure" is beyond me!
I have reported thsi to Apple, and they had a Support person get in touch with me. I have sent several spindumps and tarball files last week, but no reply. Today, I pinged the support person who said Apple Engineering was reviewing the information, and would likely get back sometime as *maybe* some others were experiencing this problem...
