Kernel_task at 90% on my Macbookpro HELP

my macbook pro is so slow help me

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for this condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan or sensor
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or sensor.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
Peripherals
Connecting an external display to some MacBook Pro models via Thunderbolt may cause this issue. I don't know of a fix, other than to disconnect the display.
Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume may put an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selecting About This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.

  • IPhoto not working after Time Machine backup on new MacBookPro - HELP!!!

    I just upgraded to a MacBook Pro, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 w/ 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K540)
Backed up from Time Machine to load all my files from my old MacBook Pro which seemed to work fine for all applications except for iPhoto.
At launch of iPhoto, I get
    1. "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto."
    2. After clicking upgrade (I'm running on all current software), I get "There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto library. Do you want iPhoto to repair permissions for this library for you?"
    3. After clicking upgrade and typing in my password, I get "iPhoto was unable to repair permissions for the library." and iPhoto quits.
I've held Option/Command when launching iPhoto and have clicked all boxes and the problem still persists.
How can I get to my photos?

  • Error 5 launching InDesign CS4 on MacBookPro - help! :)

i installed indesign CS4 (i know, yes it's old!) on my MacBook Pro i5 running osx 10.9.3.
i get an error 5 -- so after reading docs, i saw i needed to download: LicenseRecoveryLauncher.app -- which i did.
but when i try to run it i get: you can't open this app because power PC apps are no longer supported.
is there a new version of this app? other error 5 fix? i need to be able to run CS4 on my macbook pro.

Why not install CS4 on that machine then?
Work in a Dropbox folder and when you need to get those files back to CS3 open it on the other machine.
That said, CS3 is 7 versions behind CC2014. I’m not so sure I’d want to be saving back that far.

  • Cleaning up my macbookPro - HELP

I bought two external hard drives, one for Time Machine and one portable.  I've got a ton of pictures and video on my macbook and it can't run some software because there isn't enough space left.  I'm not sure how to delete and be confident that the files are saved.
    big chicken in NC

From what I understand, TimeMachine is a rotating backup of what's on your boot drive, not a excess storage drive.
So that would mean you would use the portable drive as extra storage, and since portable drives are highly vulnerable to loss, shock and are port powered (instead of it's on power) may not work correctly if it's drawing too much power.
Since powered drives are getting less expensive all the time, I suggest you get three, HFS+ journed formatting them (Disk Utility) one to make a Carbon Copy Clone of your entire OS X boot partition (it's hold the option key bootable) disconnect that and then the second to offload the video files and other huge space takers and the third to duplicate the second drive as backup.
Test the second external drive with your extra files for awhile to make sure everything works, then delete those extra files off your internal boot drive to free up space.
I know this sounds crazy, but you need to maintain two copies of your data at all times on two separate pieces of hardware in case one fails mechanically. Since your removing a large amount of data from your boot drive, you need one drive to hold that and then another for backup.
So you got two backup systems going, one for your boot drive configuration and another for your external extra storage. The boot drive has TimeMachine and a bootable clone (TM is not bootable), the external video drive has it's own backup.
When you update the clone later after you have removed files and made your new changes to the boot drive, you want it to reflect what's currently on your boot drive so in case you need to option boot from the clone and clone it back onto your internal boot drive you can. This means the extra files you've cloned the first time (and moved to the external drive) won't be on the clone as they are now on the second external drive which itself is backed up to the third external drive.
Now the drives I recommend should use as many interfaces as possible, namely eSATA, Firewire 800/400, USB 3/2.  Mac's come with USB 2 which is the slowest interface to transfer and watch video from a external drive, may result in glichy playback. So Firewire 800 or eSATA preferred (requires a expresscard), but combination port drives cost more money as USB 3/2 are more common and less expensive catering to the larger PC market.
Mac's don't have USB 3 yet, opting to push the expensive Thunderbolt instead, of course PC's don't have this and likely never will, like they never really adopted Firewire or eSATA, opting for USB 3/2 instead.
So lay out your plans well on paper first, maintain a checklist and label/date each drive so you know what it is and what it's for so you don't lose data and maintan a fast interface.
Also before you use any drive, make sure to Disk Utility format HFS+ journaled (for Mac use only) with Security option > Zero all data. Yes it takes time, but writing zero's and mapping off bad sectors results in a more reliable drive and less need for Disk Warrior and other rescue software as each bit is checked before data is laid on the sectors. Since video takes up a large space for one file, it's more prone to failing due to bad sectors that smaller files.
If you need to transfer data with a PC, I would use the portable drive and format that FAT/MSDOS as both PC's and Mac's can read that. If you have larger than 4GB files, then your going to need to format it exFAT instead. Always check if the drive works with a PC before placing your only copy of data on the drive, sometimes the PC has to format it exFAT or FAT first (or has malware) and that would/could/  contaminate/erase your data.

  • 'Kernel_task' 100% usage. DigiDesign 003.

    Hi,
I need some help! Whenever I stream audio using my DigiDesign 003 (FireWIre Audio Interface) Kernel_Task ramps straight up to 100% CPU usage on Core 1. I know that the interface is not supported on Yosemite. However, it is frustrating that the driver fully function and allow to play audio but only when 'Kernel_task' has a fit.

  • Internet stops working while still connected to wifi

The internet on my Macbook pro begins running slowing after using it for a while. But after restarting the computer it goes back to working fine. Using sites like tumblr cause it to go to crap even faster, and I'm assuming that's because of the constant reloading and processing of new things.
Searching through google pages excessively does the same thing. However, if I watch movies on netflix, or videos on youtube, the internet doesn't go to crap as quickly. When it finally does start running slower, the fan in my computer is running loudly. Pages on the internet refuse to load or load slowly.
The rest of the things on my computer work decently. This doesn't appear to be an issue with Kernel_Task. I'd appreciate any help. I really don't want to have to take in the computer, so I'm hoping it's something I can solve on my own

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Crashing with Leopard

Before leopard my computer was 100% robust
After i install leopard and only then do i get recurrent crashes with the grey screen coming up telling me to restart the computer.
I have seen others with the same issue but they are referred to some very complicated kernel fixing page.. and with no real reference to leopard that i could see.. in any case it is complicated for me..
its quite annoying to have paid for what is meant to be an improved system which then crashes my computer repeatedly (100% fine before...)
any help you could give me in laymans terms pls? it would be much appreciated,

If you look towards the bottom of the report before it mentions a BSD process, it lists dependencies on the Airport driver. What model/version of MacBook do you have? (i.e.-first generation, late 2006, mid-2007, or late 2007)
I have a late 2007 (or "Santa Rosa") MacBook and it has a Broadcom Airport card whereas your Macbook has the Atheros card.
Could be a bum Airport card. Have any other wireless issues? Does you MacBook only kernel panic when connected to a wireless network?
    Good luck!

  • Help! MASSIVE MacbookPro ISSUES with all mac softwares - diagnostic report incl.

    Hello all,
I have posted something almost 1 year ago but never got a reply.. The issues became so bad lately that even checking emails becomes a performance (for my nerves..)
My computer is a Macbookpro from mid-2012 OSX 10.8.5
bought in 2013, in france (azerty keyboard)
(NOTE: I'm french, so some of my terms might be a translation of the error messages i get in my descriptions)
The 2 browsers I'm using (ideally in parallel) are Safari & Chrome, I have their latest versions for both ot them
The programs i'm mostly using are : those 2 browsers, textedit, itunes, sometimes preview and rarely iphoto (but nowadays, only safari and textedit, as every click already takes up to 40sec...)
Here are the issues I'm experiencing daily:
    - Any click, any command takes a min. of 5sec to be fullfiled - sometimes up to 30sec - be it wanting to switch from one progr to another or turning the volume up/down via the keyboard)
    - Rainbow ball spinning at almost every click i make..
    - When i open a finder window, it takes min. a few seconds, up to 10sec for its content to appear
    - If 2 finder windws are open, sometimes clicking on one of them does not put in the front (the other window remains, overlapping the one i'm selecting though)
    - same thing happens with a finder window and itunes
    - Pages on ANY browser take sometimes up to 40 sec to load
    - Chrome gives me all the time the message that "the pages so and so won't respond" and that i can either "wait" or "close" those windows.. waiting moslty won't help.. - i have to quit the program.. wich mosly doesn't work.. so i try to force quit..which also sometimes doesn't work..or only after several minutes...
    - When opening a progr. in the dock bar, the prog icon keeps bouncing over and over (takes between 15sec-1mn for the program to open, nomatter which one)
    - Lately, when reopening Chrome, some tabs are missing : not being retaured, they are just ..gone.
    In SAFARI:
    - as soon as not ON a tab left open on browser, the page is first completely WHITE (takes up to 30sec for content to appear)
    - Safari "force reloads" all page and tabs open several times a day, lately directly after restarting the browser
    - After force reloading, the page happen to be blank, and/or no address in the url bar : i have to click the "back" arrow, in order to make the url reappear,
-..but sometimes even this isn't possible, though the name of the page is still showing on the tab window
    - After a force reload, pages such as youtube display as a simple text content - have to REload for the page to display properly
    - Computer often freezes sometimes completely,
    .. and the mouse disappears
.. sometimes so hard (rainbow ball spinning non stop) that i can't force quit, not even shut down properly (exit through the "physical" start button as only chance)
    - Computer sometimes freezes but by making a restart on his own : screen becomes blue, grey, everything disappears, big start button symbol appears on screen with message in several languages and computer restarts on his own..
    - Dock/program bar sometimes won't show up.. all i can do is restart the computer
    - Force-Quitting programs can take up to 2 to 10 min until the force quit window appears...
    - Computer generates aliases or copies (?) of documents, that can't be open anyway, adding things in the name of doc such as "NAME.rtf.sb-0352fd77-9bU6Yb"
    - Bottom line : Mac softwares (and NO other!) crash or freeze on regular basis (such as : textedit, safari, iphoto,  preview etc.), they mostly show not to be responding in the force quit window
...But sometimes, one of these programs won't respond BUT no sign of it in the force quit window
    - Dashboard always takes 10 to 40 sec to make information/content appear
    ISSUES that occured ONCE lately:
    - was looking for files via the search field of the finder, it worked normally until it became all blank and nothing, not a single file would show - had to restart computer
    - could not make a copy-paste anymore from one tab to my tab with gmail account - had to restart computer.
Desperately trying to improve if not solve those problems I happen to do more and more often those things:
    onyx automation and clean
erasing cache in chrome and safari
checking the disk with utility disk (always says it's all fine!)
repairing the "rights" via utility disk progr.
(if i happen do it every day : i happen to have an endless list each time of repaired issues)
I also start the computer with cmd+alt+p+r.. never changed anyhting
I recently did the SMC restart.. didn't change a thing
    I'm desperate !
Bottom line : those problems occur ever since 2 months after i bought this computer (new!), giving it for repair 3 times and deinstalling + reinstalling the whole system 5 TIMES NEVER changed anything.. Even partitioning the disk, by following someones advice didn't change anything.. As a matter of a fact, the problems are recurrent and only becoming worse and worse...
Last but not least, it's been 2 months now that the trackpad is "dead"..i can't press it anymore and have to use the "finger tip" mode or whatever it's called..
Thank you for taking the time to read, I'd be super grateful for any help!

Understood. But if I really want the iCloud contacts to synchronize with the contacts "On My Mac", do I have to manually copy and paste (or drag) in the Contacts application? Is this really the definition of "synchronization" ?
Again. The 'On My Mac' account is a local account, it's on your Mac (hence the name) but not anywhere else.
You may be trying to sync it to iCloud but you will fail, put the contacts where they need to be, if you want them distributed by iCloud they will need to be in the iCloud account.
One simple way to move them is to export the On My Mac account to a vcard file and then import the vcard file into the iCloud account (do all this in Contacts, not the website)

Additionally - will the iCloud contacts remain visibile on the computer when a web connection is unavailable? And - if so - what is the function of "On My Mac" contacts. (Just a bit confused over the concept, I suppose...)
Yes to the first question and as for the second, if you didn't have iCloud where would you keep your contacts?

im having trouble connecting my macbookpro to the tv. im using a mini display port to hdmi adapter, when i switch tv/video to hdmi on the tv nothing pops up, and i dont have the arrangement tap on the display settings, please help!

I've found that the order of operations, so-to-speak, can be important when hooking up mini display port to HDMI.  I have the most success with the following operations in this order:
    1)  Plug HDMI cable into mini displayport adapter (the cable should not be plugged into either the TV or the computer at this point)
    2)  Plug the mini displayport end of your new super-cable to the computer.
    3)  Plug the HDMI end into your TV.
    4)  Switch inputs on your TV to the proper input.
    5)  If still nothing on the TV, try a different HDMI port on your TV.
    Hopefully this helps!  Good luck.

  • Help! Kernel_task more than 300% of CPU and extremely laggy

Hi, I am using MacBook Pro 13 inch Early 2011 and using OS X 10.9.2 Mavericks
It has been a few days that my computer was running extremely slow and I need to hold the power button for 10 seconds for it to boot (if i press it once the white power light on the mac body would only light for a while then turns off again)
I did not know what triggered it, it was just like thay when i tried booting by mac
I checked activity monitor and the kernel_task was actually taking up more than 300% of my cpu!
I googled for answers but I can't find any. Is it due to third party software?
Furthermore, when I safe boot the kernel_task would actually be low and the speed will revert back to normal.
    Please help me
    Thank you

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

    I have a PC (Windows 7)
Not sure when mobile me changed, but it was this weekend that my storage etc. lapsed (I have paid to keep storage with icloud). So i assume this has something to with it stopping.

  • My MacBookPro has slowed to a crawl. Cleaned it with CleanMyMac 2 but no help. Can anyone suggest something? Thanks!

There's internet in my main windows PC, but no more internet in either MacBookPro or my iPod touch. I have NOT made any changes to any setting in my router or computers. How do I start troubleshooting this issue? Your help will be really appreciated.

Great! Please press the reset button of the router for 30 seconds then turn it off an on. Then please follow the procedures from the link below.
Setting-Up a Router with Cable Internet Service
Setting-Up the Wireless Settings on a Router
Please do all of this using the windows computer. I'll be waiting for your reply.

  • Unable to restore from Time Machine after an erase and reinstall - MacbookPro cannot access my old Time Machine backup volume. Desperate for help please?

My MacbookPro would not move past the Apple logo and spinning wheel for a number of hours.  After trying the numerous suggestions to solve the issue I eventually opted to erase and reinstall feeling confident my Time Machine backups would come to the rescue.  After a successful erase and reinstall I tried to restore all my data from my TIme Capsule using Command-R during start up and by using the Migration Assistant.  Neither worked and I have received messages to the effect that the backup volumes on my Time Capsule cannot be access because I have entered a wrong password or because the backup volume is damaged.
When I open my Time Capsule in Finder and click on my sparsebundle I get an eror message saying that the disk image could not be opened and that the resource is temporarily unavailable.
Desperate for some help and comfort that many years of personal data have not been lost.
    Thank you.
