Kernel_task cpu problem

Hi everyone,
I just got a new MacBook Air. After three day of downloading some useful app from internet
I started to have this weird problem: kernel_task process uses 300% of CPU.
This append when I switch-on the laptop and extremely slow down my mac.
Does anyone have the idea how to fix this?
Here is a screenshot how it looks when it starts and an EtreCheck report to give you an idea an idea of what is installed on my mac
EtreCheck version: 2.1.5 (108)

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
☞ high ambient temperature
☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

• MS-6309 and CPU problem

Hi
I have MS-6309 V2.1 (newest bios) and a regular Intel Celeron 933MHz. Recently I tried to upgrade it to Intel Coppermine 1GHz 256kB cache, but it was doing mathematical errors (random freezing, kernel error, different md5sums of the same file) (in any OS). MEMTEST went OK so I thought the CPU was bad so I tested it in my friend's mainboard and it was OK, so I tested my friend's CPU (the same, only little older release) in my mobo and it was doing the same errors.
So my mobo is bad or it doesn't have proper microcode for my CPU (which may be eventually newer than newest BIOS release) what brings me to point-> How can I update microcode in old AMI BIOS? MMTool and AMIMMDOS works only on newer bioses.
Sorry for my english

So here's specifications of my old creepy computer:
Mobo: MS-6309 V2.1 with BIOS v3.6
RAMs: Apacer 128MB UNB PC133 CL3 + PQI PC-133 MS3828UPS
CPU: Intel pentium III 1000/256/133/1.7V Q111A368-0941 SL4MF
PSU: regular 300W
HD: irrelevant
RM: CD-ROM 54X read
To Frederik about windows: There never had been one (according to former owner) before I got it and there also has never been windows since I got it.
To Stu: I was looking for some old computer to be used as media-centre and webserver when I got this one for free from my friend. And it was beyond my expectations, cos I was looking for some 500MHz, 64MB RAM (which doesn't have problem playing 1400x1050 xvids and DVD's).
OS: Gentoo, Debian, GeeXbox, Xubuntu, TinyME, Sidux, and others..
Either they run from harddisk or CDROM they freeze or do mistakes in calculations (usually it means crashed program or kernel or programs do what they shouldn't). If you f.e. run md5sum with the same file 10x at least two sums will be different.
CPU temperature doesn't go beyond 40-45°C.
The CPU runs well in other mobos (with the same rams or not) and other 1GHz coppermines runs also wrong in my mobo (with my rams or any other rams). So i think it's either CPU problem or BIOS problem (old microcode or something else).
sorry for my english

• High CPU Problems With Screensavers and Flash Player - FYI

Upgraded my 1.42 Ghz PPC MacMini (1 GB RAM) to Leopard, fresh install and suffered high CPU problems as outlined in various other threads.
Fixed major 100% cpu and 100% FAN issue by removing The Weather Channel Screensaver - so have a look at your console system info and see if a 3rd Party screensaver is causing a problem, or if no 3rd party screensaver, try using a simply screensaver like Forest.
Safari/Netscape/Firefox also were using high CPU when a webpage was using Flash, I removed Flash Player 9 (latest version) and cpu load decreased dramatically.
Go here for uninstall DMG
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
Hope this helps someone else until there are fixes.

Just wanted to clarify that the Flash and Screensaver problem is still ongoing even after the latest QT updates as of Nov 07.
The Flash problems is with Flash images/code that use moving graphics/user input, such as those adverts you see where you push a button to punch Paris Hilton.
I think the overall problem is with the way QT/Core Image/Core Animation is different in Leopard compared to Tiger. As have now often witnessed iTunes just displaying the Cover Flow image area and nothing else (everything else in the application area is white) when going between applications, clicking on the iTunes icon in the dock refreshes the image okay.

• Latest 10.8.5 mod slowed my computer - kernel_task cpu issue

Installed the 10.8.5 supplemental mods and the Java update last night.  After doing so, the kernel_task cpu issue - which I had eliminated a year ago - has come back.  It is making time-machine unusable in both normal and safe mode.  How do I fix?  Backing out or restoring to previous time machine settings seems impossible due to the processing speeds.  Reinstall??

Final answer!  This was a case where the 10.8.5 updates overwrote / reinstalled the "plist" files which control the power throttling of the CPU.  The pasted link has a whole discussion and fix with the details.  I had run with this fix since Aug 2012 and this was the first Mountain Lion upgrade that caused me to re-do it.  As an FYI, there are RISKS specified with this fix, but in my case I have not come close to having excessive temps or any functional issues.

• E450 CPU Problem?

Hi,
I got a warning message: fail-Master Disable for UltraSPARC-II.
And the output from prtdiag shows than one of the CPU has gone.
Is this a CPU problem?
Thank you.
Andry

That would be a good guess.
If it's not the cpu, then it's the DC-DC converter that's mated to that cpu module.
Either way, you need to replace hardware parts.
Go to the Sun System Handbook and get the E450's Service Manual.
( actually, you might as well get ALL the documentation for the system while you're there )

• Has there been a fix for the dreaded kernel_task eating up all CPU problem yet???

Since I bought this pile of garbage in 2011 and went overseas I've been struggling with it. This kernel_task issue is completely insane and a lot of pepole experience it as well, so has Apple released a fix or has anyone figured out a proper way to get rid of it?

I have this same issue on my iMac after an upgrade. My girlfriend's iMac (same model) was unaffected. So the problem seems to affect random machines of all ages and types. I have a solution but not a fun one.
@ScottC75 : The CPU percentage shows what % of an individual core is being used. If you have a multi-core chip (which most Macs do) this can go above 100%
I've read *a lot* of forums on this kernel_task problem with people spouting quite a lot of rubbish.
I first tried everything listed on forums: reinstalling OS X, removing kexts (that apparently stop your computer from overheating), new RAM, tidying up the computer. None of it worked.
One guy said he took three trips to the Apple Store, having his MBP sent off each time; eventually they gave him a brand new MBP of the latest spec. That might be the option for you but I didn't want to be without my computer for that time.
Finally, I did a complete wipe of my Mac. If you boot using the backup partition, or using a USB with an OS X Install on it, the option to 'reinstall' or 'install a new OS X' does not wipe your computer. Once it has finished, you will have all your files and applications still. This did not fix my computer. Instead, you must use Disk Utility first to wipe you Macintosh HD partition and then install. Then you Mac acts like it's brand new. Only this fixed the problem. The massive downside is that I had to backup everything and reinstall all my apps.
This is a drastic measure, and you run the risk of forgetting to backup all the stuff you want. It did work though and was ultimately quicker than going to the Apple Store (even if I might have got a new computer out of it).
In summary, to fix this problem:
1. I backed up all my files onto an external hard drive!
2. I booted up to the recovery screen (Command + R or hold the option key at bootup)
2. In Disk Utility, I 'erased' my 'Macintosh HD' partition
4. Back on the main recovery screen, I chose to (Re)install OS X.

• Macbook Pro CPU problem - idle % consistently low, please help!

Hi,
I've had my Macbook for about 8 months and never had any problems with it. Recently it started running very slow - freezing, mouse moving slow, typing response slow. I tried some solutions I found online (installing all updates, resetting NVRAM/PRAM, reindexing Spotlight, verifying disk permissions, entering purge in terminal). None of these worked. I checked Activity Monitor and the problem appears to be with the CPU, since every time the computer is running slow the Idle % is under 10%. Out of an abundance of caution, I uninstalled two Chrome plugins which were the only things I've installed in months (Adblocker and Disconnect.) I don't use any games or any other apps - pretty much all I do on my laptop is browse the internet on Chrome and use MS Word. I also have plenty of disk space, so I know that lack of storage is not causing this problem.
The only thing that has worked, at least temporarily, is shutting down, connecting to power source, and holding ctrl option shift power for 10 seconds, then turning back on (this was suggested in another thread on these forums.) The first time I did this it worked like a charm - my computer worked fine afterward, with the idle% back up to well over 90. However, it started running slow again the next day. I repeated the key process and again it seemed fine. Then again it slowed.
At this point I've tried the same solution several times and it doesn't seem to be helping anymore. Upon startup the idle% use in Activity Monitor is anywhere between 4% and 10%. The kernel_task is showing around 350% in Acitvity Monitor.
I have a very important test coming up at the end of the month and I'm studying 16 hours a day, and can't afford to be away from my computer for long. Is there ANYTHING I can do to fix this from home, or does it need to be taken into Genius under Apple care? If so, will they have to send it out and replace the hard drive, or will it be an easy in-store fix?
Any information would be appreciated! I am about sick to death of Apple products (my old first gen Macbook Air had to have its hard drive replaced twice and its screen replaced once.) If I can't find a solution I may have no choice but to up and buy a PC.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below is a partial list of causes for this condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce heat dissipation. This condition can be due to an accumulation of dust, to high ambient temperature, or to the malfunction of a cooling fan or temperature sensor. You might, or might not, see messages like the following in the Console window:
SMC::smcHandleInterruptEvent WARNING status=0x0 (0x40 not set) notif=0x0
The timestamps of those messages (if any) indicate the times, since the log was last cleared, when a processor was being throttled due to high temperature.
Note that if the problem is caused by a faulty sensor that reads too high, there may be no actual overheating.
The Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or temperature sensor.
Using Apple Hardware Test
Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume may put an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selecting About This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode (with the shift key held down at the startup chime.) Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
In some cases the condition has reportedly been cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC. I can't confirm.

• Macbook Pro "Battery not available" + kernel_task cpu usage

Hi everyone,
I have done some searching around and I see that both of these problems are reasonably common, but I don't see much discussion of them happening together.
First up, a description: My early 2011 15" mbp (240gb vertex 3 ssd and 750gb hdd in optibay, running OSX 10.7.3) became sluggish a week or so ago. I noticed unusually high cpu use by several tasks in activity monitor (usually kernel_task but also finder, itunes and others). Usually when I am epeiencing this problem I also notice that the battery icon has changed to a cross and reports "no batteries available". If I unplug the power, the machine instantly powers off and will not power back on without the power supply connected, at which point the white lights on the front of the machine flash for a few seconds before the machine boots as normal. Pressing the battery meter on the side causes all LEDs to flash. Interestingly, if I power on with the power supply connected, but then unplug it as the machine boots, the machine continues to run (although the system still fails to detect a battery). This leads me to believe that the battery itself is sound. Sometimes these problems happen independantly of each other. For example, I have noticed the resource use is high even in the brief periods where the battery is detected.
Now the twist: if I boot into Windows 7 the battery is detected as normal. If I then reboot into OSX everything works normally for a random amount of time before the problem reoccurs.
Things I have tried:
Clearing various cache's
Resetting the SMC (power button hold method is what I tried, though I got no feedback from the machine itself that anything had happened and I am unsure if this is the correct method for my model).
removing all login items for my user account
deleting finder preferences
removing all non-apple startup kexts
So what do people think? Broken SMC? If it did turn out to be this issue, is this a relatively easy fix? Will they replace the whole machine? I have 3 years of apple care, but this is my main work machine and I can't do without it for more than a couple of days. Also my nearest apple store is a train ride away.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

Since you have tried the SMC reset, I suggest that you make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free regardless of warranty status.
Ciao.

• Kernel_task cpu usage and fans on high (slow system)

Ok so I have a fairly new MacBook Pro that is acting up. It is probably 2 months old and I noticed the kernel_task has spiked using majority of cpu (system% is in the 90's). So I went through cleaning out cache, temp files, trash, etc... then removed newly installed apps. When I go into Safe Mode my system runs fine but the fans still sound like they are on high. So I thought maybe there was a software problem.... I erased the OS and reinstalled it and it is doing the same thing w/ a new OS install. Safe Mode works fine but kernal_task still eating cpu in normal mode.
What else is there to do? I read some people having issues w/ MacBook Air with a hardware issue causing this same issue, but wouldn't it seem software related if Safe Mode works fine?

Why does everyone reinstall their OSX? It rarely fixes issues, and you really wasted some time in doing so.
The kernel task issue is something you need to diagnose one step at a time. I had the same thing, found out it was one program that was causing it. I contacted the developer, they saw the same thing on i7 MBP's, and they put out an update a few weeks later.
But if you're saying that you have a kernel task that is taking up your system resources without any programs running, including background tasks, then you might have a hardware issue. Take it back to Apple if you can't find a program that's causing it.

• MacBook2,1 CPU problem

Hy! The problem is, that one of my cores is always being used 100% by the system, the other core behaves normally. "kernel_task" is eating up to 105 (think it's %) of the cpu. I got an average 70C temperature, with the fans aorund 6200rpm. Is this normal? Anyobody any ideas? Thanks!

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM.

There appears to be a lot of people with this problem and still no solution from Apple!
In the past month the kernel_task has bloated on the CPU usage, the attached screenshot
is pretty much standard, sometimes a reboot helps but its back within an hour or two of
running the machine, and its become very frustrating in terms of workflow, did not get this
previous to Maverick, so something has been added to this OSX build to cause the machine
to crawl. Tried rebuilding persmissions, zap PRAM, turning off extensions etc. it still comes back
again and again.
System CPU Load is at 84.22% leaving very little for the user, and making machine very unresponsive.

• Kernel_task CPU issues (Lion, MBP 2011)

Hey y'all,
I've been noticing some "strange" behavious on my Lioin equipped 2011 MBP - I don't know what causes this, but let's say I have a fresh restart/boot up of the laptop - open up let's say Reaper (music sequencer program), and start making music...after a little while, I'll notice I start to get clicks in the audio - check the activity monitor, and sure enoug, the kernel_task is using up between 250% and 3xx% cpu for no apparent reason. The ram usage is no problem, very little ram used...however, it means that I cannot use this laptop for live use, which ***** cause I'm rehearsing for live solo shows :S
I've tried using cleanmymac and ccleaner, powering down, restarting etc. It usually reverts back to normal after doing all of the above. But I just tried doing this now, and the cpu/kernel_task is at around 250% after cleaning and a restart of Lion (latest version).
Here's a link to the txt acitity monitor report, and here's a copy paste, anyone got some advice on how to get rid of this problem and a healthy clean running system? (thinking about starting from scratch with a new install, but then again I might wait for the new MBP's to come before going through all that hassle)

That link didn't help at all.
Anyone care to help out?
I don't know what it is...I'll be using let's say Firefox, with like 10-20 tabs, be watching a youtube video in VLC player or whatever, and all of a sudden it gets sluggish - check the activity monitor, and it's the same problem...I'll restart or shut down, which sometimes helps, sometimes it boots up with the same problem, or the problem starts within 1-10minutes of me using Reaper or some other "big" program with plugins etc...but it also just happens with me using regular programs, safar/firefox etc. Might it have something to do with a background "maintenance" thing Lion starts or something like that? I've deliberately turned off indexing via terminal, so it doesn't index while I'm performing music (It would start indexing and take half a day at it, and then still do it so I finally was like, I can live without the search function...) otherwise I've had no kernel panics, no issues really with my mac and os x...

• Kernal_tack and %CPU problems

Over a day my wife's computer (Dual 867) will run up to 70% Kernel CPU usage. Fans are running hard and computer is slow. Restart lowers the CPU usage and starts over again. None of the Mac's at my TV station do this. We have three different OS installations on three different drives and my wife’s is the only OS (10.4.6) that does this. I have performed a fresh install and am starting to think it's the new 200 GB Western Digital HD. Any suggestions?
Shawn Bockoven

Hi, Shawn.
The kernel_task process is the heart of the operating system: you'll note it is Process ID (PID) 0. It is involved in scheduling, managing virtual memory, and other activities.
There are a number of items that have historically caused problems resulting in a kernel_task running amok:
- Back-level versions of APC PowerChute.
- HP Scan Manager.
